Abstract:The catalytic properties of several supported metal catalysts on different carriers were studied in the partial oxidation of methane (POM) to synthesis gas. The noble catalysts (the different SiO2 supported metal catalysts, i.e., Pt/SiO2, Ru/SiO2, Rh/SiO2, Pd/SiO2, Cu/SiO2, and Ni/SiO2) exhibited a higher methane conversion and CO selectivity than the transition metal catalysts. Transition metal catalysts suffered from a low CO selectivity and a high deposit carbon selectivity, although Ni/SiO2 provided high CH4 conversion. Rh, Ru, and Pt catalysts exhibited high CH4 conversion, high CO selectivity, and low deposit carbon selectivity, while Pd catalysts had the lowest CH4 conversion and the highest deposit carbon selectivity. All the Rh catalysts showed high methane conversion, and their conversions decreased with the matrix in the order: CeO2 > SiO2 > MgAl2O4 > γ-Al2O3 > α-Al2O3 > MgO. A suitable number of unpaired d-electrons were beneficial to the POM reaction, materials with low acidity and without apparent redox abilities were good supports for catalyst preparation of the POM reaction. Supported Rh catalysts had the best catalytic performance for POM. Reaction conditions could greatly influence the POM reaction. Increasing the temperature was favorable to enhance the methane conversion and the CO selectivity, but a high CH4/O2 ratio was harmful to the POM reaction.
