Abstract:The numerical simulation on welding deformation of large-diameter flange was studied. The results show that the residual stress at the welding line are 299~341 MPa. The maximum deformation is 1.63 mm while the maximum residual stress is 424 MPa by the optimum welding sequence. And the adoption of segment weld can reduce the welding deformation.

Abstract:Double-sided arc welding (DSAW), as an advanced connection method, has become a typical method for large pressure hull with thick plates. However, welding deformation and residual stress will seriously affect the dimensional deviation and fatigue life of the product. Therefore, it is a very important work to predict and control the welding deformation and residual stress. A novel dynamic heat distribution model considering the weave of welding torches is proposed to accurately predict DSAW deformation and residual stress in this paper. It is worth noting that this paper also puts forward a method to control the welding deformation and residual stress by flexible constraints of multi-point array, which makes the radial deformation less than 2 mm and the maximum axial stress is 423.98 MPa. This research provides a new idea for the accurate prediction and control of welding deformation and residual stress, which has great engineering significance.

Abstract:This paper aims to investigate the influence of welding sequences and boundary conditions on welding-induced residual stress and residual deformation of DH36 steel T-joint fillet welds through experimental and numerical methods. A series of typical experiments of successive and simultaneous double-sided welding conditions are conducted to explore both the magnitude and distribution of temperature field, residual stress and residual deformation. Meanwhile, thermal elastic-plastic finite element analysis based on a double ellipsoidal heat source model is performed to investigate the heat transfer and deformation mechanism during the welding process. The influencing factors are further explored to determine and quantify the residual stress and residual deformation induced by different welding sequences and boundary conditions. There is generally well agreement between the experimental and numerical results in terms of temperature field, residual stress, residual deformation and molten pool morphology. The results show that the welding sequences have an important influence on the magnitude and distribution of residual stress and residual deformation. Continuous simultaneous double-sided welding can significantly reduce residual stress and residual deformation to obtain better-quality welds. Boundary conditions have a significant effect on the distribution and magnitude of residual deformation and little effects on residual stress. Tightening the ends of the flange plate with bolts during the welding process can significantly reduce the deformation.

Abstract:In order to control the welding residual stress and distortion to the greatest extent, based on the MSC.MARC software platform and adopting the impending critical value methods gradually, the welding residual stress and distortion are calculated through varying the weld tab length values. The results show that different weld tab lengths only have a slight effect on welding residual stress but a significant effect on welding distortion. According to the calculation results with different weld tab lengths, the critical length value for the 100 mm-length TC4 alloy weld for electron beam welding of an integral disk should be 50 mm or so.

Abstract:The challenges posed by cross-scale effects, large computational requirements, high nonlinearity, and complex interactions of multiple physical phenomena constitute major obstacles to the effectiveness and accuracy of welding simulations for large structural components. Therefore, achieving accurate welding simulation to predict and effectively control welding deformation of substantial engineering structural parts is essential to ensure welding quality and improve production efficiency. This paper reviews the current research status of welding numerical simulation of large engineering components, including the establishment of the finite element model, optimization of the heat source model, selection of appropriate finite element calculation method, and the control of welding deformation through optimization algorithm. In addition, the strategies to improve the precision and efficiency of welding numerical simulation and control welding deformation of engineering components are analyzed and discussed. The future development of welding numerical simulation will focus on balancing simulation accuracy and simulation efficiency and optimizing welding parameters to control welding deformation efficiently. Abstract:Based on finite element code,ANSYS software,finite element model of welding deformation of large thick-walled structure was performed,and the relative distance between elbow and thick-wall cylinder,the cylinder roundness variation and the deformation evolution of welded cylinder with angle-inserting elbow with thickness of 125mm were numerically analyzed.The results show that the displacement of elbow and the roundness on both sides of the cylinder have opposite changes at the stage of heating to the stage of cooling,moreover the cylinder roundness on the two ends of the cylinder have significant differences;a relatively large contraction appears eventually in the bottom of the groove;the deformation should be reduced by reducing the cooling rate in stage of initial 1-2h.

Abstract:Numerical simulation of 2219 aluminum alloy flat under the condition of subsection welding or no subsection welding was analyzed by the double ellipsoidal heat source model. The result shows that the residual tensile stress of subsection welding appears in the weld and nearby areas while the peak value appears in the weld. The subsection welding can greatly increase the low stress area in the weld. Moreover, the contrast of stress between the subsection welding and no subsection welding shows that if the welding sequence, namely that the double ends of the weld are welded first and then the middle part is welded, is adopted in the subsection welding, the peak value of residual tensile stress can be greatly decreased.

Abstract:In this paper, thermal elastic-plastic finite element method is used for calculating the deformation of flange for large axial compressor welded casing split. By establishing the finite element model, the deformation in three different welding processes is calculated. The deformations of flanges for casing split in various welding process are predicted quantificationally, and available optimal welding sequence is obtained. Comparing the calculated distortion values with the measured values, it is shown that they are nearly consistent. So, it is proved that numerical optimization used for prediction of deformation of large components is feasible.

Abstract:Numerical simulation calculation on welding sequence of bottom plate of large-sized structure is conducted by using non-line finite element model,and the sparse and close finite model is used.The thermo-mechanics parameters of changing with temperature and the high efficient string heat source model of double elliptical are utilized to qualitatively calculate the deflection distortion of different welding sequence and different constraints.The results show that the deflection distortion is smaller for the first welded bottom plates than the first welded stiffened plates,is smaller for the successive welding than the simultaneous welding of bottom plates,and is smaller for using rigid plate constraint welding than non constraint welding.The distortion of the stiffened plate for the successive welding will occur,but the simultaneous welding won't do.The deflection distortion of welded structure relates to the neutral axis of its structure.

Abstract:Based on finite element analysis software MARC,the 3D numerical simulation on laser welding of "grooved-coat" structure was conducted. This research work concerned the application of hybrid heat source model of laser welding, the simplifications of the mechanical and thermal boundary conditions, the discussions on the computed results of temperature field and residual stress field, and that of the comparison between the shape and size of computed weld pool and the experimental results. The results of the comparisons show that the finite element model is reasonable. The effects of the welding sequences on the welding residual stresses and deformation of structure were investigated. The results show that different welding sequence can get the same distortion pattern, but their deformation have difference, and the distribution of the residual stress is different from each other. The deformation and the residual stress obtained with symmetrical welding from outer to inner is the lowest.

Abstract:The welding residual stress of spiral pipe was simulated using the ABAQUS commercial soft-ware.The subroutine compiled by FORTRAN language was adopted to control the welding path,velocity and magnitude of heat source.The distributions of spiral pipe′s temperature field and welding residual stresses were obtained.The results show that with the move of the heat source,the distribution of the tem-perature and the residual field is symmetrical with respect to the welding seam but not uniform.Mean-while,it is found that the maximum tensile residual stress is located at the fusion zone.Besides,the accu-racy and feasibility of the thermal load amplitude curve method was discussed.Compared with the results obtained by calling the subroutine,it is known that thermal load amplitude curve method can also accu-rately predict the welding residual stress,providing an efficient method to calculate the welding residual stress of a complex structure.

Abstract:Serious deformation occurred and the heat transfer between the tube and the mold was very complex during the welding process of the small-section tube. When the traditional singular coupled model was applied to in numerical simulation of the tube, there exists great errors in temperature fields. Based on this reason, a direct coupled-analysis model was built to simulate the thermal distributions of welding process of the tube. It is shown that the simulation results are in good accordance with the actual results, which proves the model is correct. This sdudies can be help for choosing the proper welding parameters in autoimatic welding.

Abstract:Based on the ABAQUS code and its user subroutine DFLUX, this paper does 3D numerical simulation of butt weld of Q345B thick steel plate with different thickness by using the uncoupled thermal— mechanical method, and gets the distribution of welding temperature and residual stresses. The numerical simulation results show that the longitudinal and transverse residual stress is regular, and the residual stress on the surface is bigger than the middle one. The welding longitudinal residual stress increases with plate thickness, especially when the plate thickness is less than 70 mm.And the transverse stress is not sensitive to thickness.

Abstract:Residual stress in welded structures causes distortion. Severe problems in welded structures leading to failure can be due to uneven distribution of plastic and thermal strain. In the present investigation, Gas Metal Arc Welding of carbon steel (ASTM 36) has been simulated and analysed using Numerical methods. Finite element software ANSYS workbench has been used for the analysis of butt welding of two similar plates. 3-D FEM has been carried out to predict the temperature profile, residual stress distribution and distortion produced during single-pass GMAW process. Also, the effect of variation of convective film coefficients (h) on the distribution and magnitude of the welding residual stresses has been simulated. The analysis includes a time-varying moving heat source, material deposition, temperature-dependent material properties, temperature-dependent plasticity and elasticity properties, transient heat transfer and mechanical behaviour. The temperature-dependent properties of ASTM 36 have been taken from standard data source and that are described up to liquid phase. A 20 node tetrahedral (solid 90) thermal solid has been considered for the thermal analysis, whereas an 8 node (solid 185) solid is used for structural analysis. Both the effects of conduction and convection have been considered in the present work. A sequential coupled thermo-mechanical analysis has been used in this study, and to simulate the filler material deposition, “element birth and death technique” which is introduced to incorporate non-linearity in the model, has been adopted. From this present analysis, the angular distortions have been seen due to the clamping constraint used in the model, but they are insignificant. The lowest value of equivalent stress and the maximum value of angular distortion has been found out for the same value of convective film coefficients (h) which is 500 W/m2 °C.

Abstract:The characteristics of the quasi-steady-state during tungsten inert gas(TIG) welding process on 5A12 aluminum alloy sheet with limited size were analyzed.The welding process,residual angular deformation and longitudinal residual stress were numerically simulated and studied using the modified two-dimonsional Gaussian heating source model.The numerical simulation results were compared with experimental results.The results show that the numerical results by the modified two-dimensional Gaussian model reflect well the limited plate welding characteristics.The shape of joint fusion zone and thermal cycle curve calculated agree well with the experimental results.And the welding residual deformation and longitudinal welding residual stress are closer with the experimental value of the simulation results.The welding temperature field,welding longitudinal residual stress and deformation can be simulated accurately using the modified two-dimensional Gaussian model.

Abstract:Discontinuous welding is the most common welding type used in the fabrication of structural members in shipbuilding, automobile and other industries. Fillet-welded joints usually suffer from various welding deformation patterns, such as longitudinal shrinkage, transverse shrinkage, angular distortion and longitudinal bending. Welding deformation has negative effects on fabrication accuracy, external appearance and various strengths of the welded structures. This study describes the thermal elasto-plastic analysis using finite element techniques to analyze the thermo-mechanical behavior and evaluate the residual stresses and distortion of 5A06 aluminum alloy structure in discontinuous welding. Furthermore, this work employs the technique of submodeling and substructure to guarantee the simulation accuracy and improve computational efficiency. Also discussed are the effects of welding sequence and weld length on the residual stresses and distortions. In addition, the generation mechanism of angular distortion is clarified through numerical simulation.
Numerical Simulation on Laser Full-penetration Welding of Medium-thickness Stainless Steel Plates

Abstract:The temperature and stress field of laser full-penetration welding process for 16 mm-thick stainless steel plates were numerically simulated using commercial software ABAQUS, during which the heat source model was described by a combination of one volume heat source and two super-Gaussian surface sources, respectively representing the keyhole thermal conduction and plasma/metal vapor thermal radiation. Results show that the weld joint with hourglass cross section obtained by simulation agrees well with that of experiments; the longitudinal residual stress in the plate is the largest, followed by the transverse stress, and finally the transverse through-thickness stress; longitudinal tensile stress exists mainly in the zone 25 mm away from the center line of weld, and the maximum value has already exceeded the yield strength; an angular distortion of 0.35�� after welding is predicted, and such small distortion could be attributed to the high and dense energy input by the laser, which can fully penetrate the plate by one pass without weld groove.

Abstract:With the development of computer technology in recent years,the 3D numerical simulation technology of welding process has gradually become the frontier of welding field,and has attracted more and more researchers' attention.However,the numerical simulation in the temperature field and stress-strain field needs to hold too much amount of calculation and time,so it requires a high level of computer configuration.In general,it is necessary to improve the calculation efficiency as much as possible under the premise of ensuring the accuracy of calculation.In this paper,a large amount of research results in this field are integrated,and the influence of different welding heat sources and different modeling methods on welding simulation results is emphatically introduced.Under the condition of ensuring the accuracy of calculation results,the simplified model is used to reduce the computation time and improve the calculation efficiency.

Abstract:With the numerous applications of high-pressure pipeline, it is very important to simulate the in-service welding of the pipeline.The flow state of the medium in the pipeline can be analyzed, the temperature field and the stress field also can be simulated by applying sysweld software. The medium flow can reduce the welding residual stress and reduce welding stress range during in-service welding. Meanwhile, with the increase of flow rate of the medium, the maximum temperature of inner wall drops and the maximum weld residual stress increases by a slow growth. At the same time, the highest temperature of pipe wall increases rapidly with the increase of heat input, whereas the maximum residual stress of welded joint decreases by a slow trend.

Abstract:Welding residual stresses in 0Cr18Ni9/20 and 1Cr5Mo/20 dissimilar metal welded joints were simulated and analyzed with the finite element ABAQUS based on the succession coupling thermal stress computation program.The simulation results show that the maximum axial residual stress and hoop residual stress exist in the heat-affected zones(HAZ)of 20 steel side,and the minimum residual stress exists in 0Cr18Ni9 steel HAZ side.When 0Cr18Ni9/20 and 1Cr5Mo/20 dissimilar metal were welded by using the Incone182 nickel-base weld metal,the welding residual stresses were significantly reduced,which improves the resistance on stress corrosion cracking.

Abstract:It has been widely studied about the final residual stress and deformation in multipass welding of thick weldments. But there is a lack of a clear understanding of the interrelationship of interpass stress and deformation during multipass welding. In this study, a three dimension numerical model of a sixteen-pass double V-groove welded joint with 50 mm plate is developed to compute the stress field and deformation by using multiple CPU parallel processing technology. The following factors such as the non-linear of temperature, heat radiation, filling of material step by step and so on are considered. Distribution and evolution law of welding stress in the transverse and longitudinal section is analyzed in this paper, and the interpass stresses are studied also. At the same time the evolution course of angular deformation amount is analyzed, and the experimental results show that the calculated results accord with the measured results of angular deformation.
