Abstract:Novel composite oxide ion conductors were developed based on a fluorite-type Ce0.8Y0.2O1.9 (CYO) and a perovsldte-type BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O2.9 (BZCYO) synthesized by the carbonate co-precipitation route at 700 degrees C and the sol-gel process at 1000 C, respectively. When sintered at 1400 degrees C, CYO and BZCYO showed an ac conductivity of 1.60 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) and 1.21 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C, respectively, in dry air and wet hydrogen. CYO-BZCYO composites sintered at 1400 degrees C showed much lower conductivity than CYO and BZCYO in dry air, but they showed enhanced conductivity in wet hydrogen. The highest conductivities of 3.27 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 500 degrees C and 9.40 x 10(-3) S cm(-1) at 400 degrees C were achieved in wet hydrogen by the composite containing 30wt.% BZCYO, which are 3-5 times higher than those of CYO and BZCYO, making this composite material a promising candidate as an electrolyte for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). Abstract:Doped BaZrO3 has outstanding stability and proton conductivity, and doped-ceria La2Ce2O7(LCO) has mixed conductivities of free-electron, oxygen-ion and proton, which are both potential electrolyte materials. Herein, one-step-co-fired BaZr0.8Y0.2O3-δ(BZY)-LCO composite electrolytes are prepared and characterized to give play to their respective advantages and avoid their shortcomings for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). As for different components of BZY-LCO, the sintering activity increases with the increase of LCO content, however, the corresponding open circuit voltage decreases. Interestingly, the 30 %mol BZY-70 %mol LCO (3BZY-LCO) shows the best overall performance as functions of sintering activity, total conductivity, cell performance. As for the anode supported single cells, the maximum power density of 3BZY-LCO electrolyte can reach 0.581 W cm−2 at 750 °C using humidified hydrogen (3% H2O) as fuel. Preliminary experiment results suggest that the strategy of composite electrolyte can make up for the shortcomings of doped BaZrO3 and doped-ceria to a certain extent for LT-SOFCs.

XRD patterns showed that no reaction occurred between the BZCY and LSGM electrolytes after sintering at 1400°C, 1450°C, 1500°C, and 1550°C for 10 h. The BL91 composite electrolyte exhibited higher relative densities and Vickers hardness and excellent electrical properties compared with those of the BZCY electrolyte. A combined approach of equivalent circuit model and distribution of relaxation time analysis was used to distinguish the bulk and grain‐boundary contributions to the total conductivity and electrode processes. The introduction of 10 wt.% LSGM serves as a grain‐boundary pinning phase, which can reduce the mobility of grain boundaries, thereby increasing sintered density and enhancing conductivity in BL91. A solid oxide fuel cell with proton‐conducting BL91 and BZCY membranes was tested, in which the former displayed higher power outputs than the latter. Ohmic and interfacial polarization resistances decreased by approximately 20%, thereby revealing the remarkable electrical properties of the BL91 electrolyte. Results demonstrated that BL91 composite is a development prospect proton‐conducting electrolyte.

Abstract:By compositing cerium oxide (Gd0.1Ce0.9O1.95, GDC) with the dysprosium-zirconium co-doped bismuth oxide (Dy0.2Zr0.05Bi0.75)2O3, or DZSB, a novel DZSB-GDC composite electrolyte is developed, which has excellent sintering ability and ionic conductivity. Reverse coprecipitation is used to prepare nano composite electrolyte powders, and the sintering and electrical properties with varying DZSB composite ratio are examined. After sintered at 1200 degrees C for 10 h, all composite electrolyte pellets can achieve densities of more than 95 %. Furthermore, as the DZSB ratio increases, the densification rate increases and the starting temperature of the densification stage decreases. 10DZSB-GDC shows the highest conductivity (sigma t) and has an activation energy of 0.92 eV below 550 degrees C, which is 8.9 % lower than that of pure GDC. At 400 degrees C, the grain boundary conductivity of 10DZSB-GDC was 113.8 times that of pure GDC. The ionic conductivity of 10DZSB-GDC remain stable at 0.015 S cm- 1 at 600 degrees C for 4200 h without any decay. The open-circuit voltage and peak power density of 10DZSB-GDC based cell are 0.914 V, and 441.1 mW cm- 2 at 750 degrees C, which is 1.1 and 2.1 times that of GDC-supported cells, respectively. This indicates that 10DZSB-GDC is a promising electrolyte material for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells.

Towards Highly Dense Electrolytes at Lower Sintering Temperature (∼1200 °C): Optimization Strategies for BaCe0.7Zr0.1CuxY0.2-xO3-δ in SOFCs

Abstract:High-conducting and long-term stable proton-conducting electrolytes are of utmost importance. This study investigates the synthesis and characterization of BaCe0.7Zr0.1CuxY0.2-xO3-delta (BCZCu(x)Y; x = 0, 0.005, 0.01, 0.02, 0.05, and 0.1) electrolytes tailored for proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). Through Cu2+ doping at the B-site of BaCe0.7Zr0.1Y0.2O3-delta (BCZY), a successful reduction of the sintering temperature to 1200 degrees C was achieved. BCZCu(0.02)Y exhibited a high relative density of approx. 98.1% at this temperature, but beyond 2 mol% Cu doping, the appearance of a BaCuO2 secondary phase adversely impacted conductivity. The electronic properties of BCZY and BCZCuxY are elucidated via partial density of states (PDOS) analysis, revealing optimized crystal structures and band gap reductions (from approx. 1.9 eV-1.1 eV) upon Cu doping. Notably, BCZCu(0.02)Y demonstrated a commendable conductivity, with values of 3.5 x 10(-2) S. cm(-1) in air and 4.8 x 10(-2) S. cm(-1) in a moist atmosphere at 750 degrees C. Remarkably, excellent electrochemical stability was observed in a moist hydrogen atmosphere for up to 450 h at 600 degrees C. Single cells incorporating BCZCu(0.02)Y electrolytes exhibited peak power densities of 380 mW/cm(2) at 750 degrees C. The incorporation of 2 mol% Cu2+ in the BCZY lattice holds promise for achieving low-temperature sintering and high-performance proton-conducting SOFCs.

Abstract:In this paper,20% yttrium doped ceria(Ce0.8Y0.2O1.9,20 YDC) electrolyte material was prepared employing nitrates as the starting salts and sodium carbonate as the co-precipitant.The powder properties were characterized by XRD,SEM and TEM.The XRD results show that fluorite-structured oxides are obtained from the carbonate precursors when calcined at 600 ℃.The TEM microphotographs show that the calcined powders are spherical nano-particles with good dispersion.The 20 YDC powders calcined at 700 ℃ are cold-pressed to investigate their sintering properties.The SEM analysis and density determination show that the as-prepared powders have good sinterability and the relative density of the electrolyte pellet sintered at 1 400 ℃ for 4 h is over 95%.The electrical conductivity was measured using two-probe impedance spectroscopy.The sample calcined at 1 400 ℃ exhibits a conductivity of 0.04 S/cm and 0.015 S/cm at 700 ℃ and 600 ℃,respectively,and the activation energy is 0.85 eV,indicating that 20 YDC is a promising electrolyte for intermediate-to-low temperature solid oxide fuel cell.
Design of a Highly Stable and Conductive Electrolyte by Suppressing Barium Copper Oxide Formation at the Grain Interfaces in Cux-doped BaCe0.7Zr0.1Dy0.2-xO3-δ Sintered at a Low Temperature (1200 °C) for SOFCs

Abstract:Proton-conducting electrolytes with high conductivity and long-term stability, achievable at low sintering temperatures, are of paramount importance. In this study, we investigate the impact of Cu doping on the sintering mechanism, electrical performance, and stability of BaCe0.7Zr0.1Dy0.2-xO3-delta (BCZD) electrolyte. The morphology, composition, structure, and chemical state of BCZD electrolytes were investigated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Remarkably, the sintering temperature of BCZD is reduced to 1200 degrees C through Cu doping Furthermore, the introduction of Cu as a dopant induces Ba exsolution from the BCZD crystal lattice alongside the generation of oxygen vacancies. XPS measurements confirmed that vacancy concentrations increase with increasing Cu doping concentrations. However, as the Cu content surpasses 2 mol%, the exsoluted Cu reacts with Ba, leading to the formation of BaCuO2. Accumulation of BaCuO2 at the grain boundaries adversely affects the conductivity and stability of Cu-doped BCZD, in a humidified atmosphere where it exhibits significant instability. Notably, BCZD with 2 mol% Cu content demonstrates a conductivity of 2.7 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) and maintains stability for up to 420 h in the H-2/3%H2O atmosphere at 600 degrees C. In contrast, BCZD with 5 mol% Cu content exhibits a conductivity of 1.9 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C but experiences continuous degradation in a humidified atmosphere, ultimately leading to failure within 30 h. The 2 % Cu-doped BCZD exhibits high conductivity and stability at intermediate temperatures, rendering it highly suitable for solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) applications.

Abstract:A comparative study has been made to relate the effect of different addition strategies for the sintering aid of ZnO (similar to 1 wt %) on the performance of the BaZr0.4Ce0.4Y0.2O3-delta (BZCY442) electrolyte in order to improve the sinterability and conductivity of this material more efficiently. Two samples, Zn-doped BaZr(0.4)Zr(0.4)Y(0.15)Z(3-delta) (BZCYZn, internal doping) and BZCY-ZnO (BZCY442 mixed with ZnO, external addition), were synthesized. The BZCYZn crystallized at a single phase after sintering at 1350 degrees C, and the segregation of Y2O3 was observed in BZCY-ZnO in the same conditions. The relative densities of the BZCYZn and BZCY-ZnO samples sintered at 1350 degrees C for 5 h were 98 and 94%, respectively. The high total conductivity in BZCYZn benefited from the low barrier height at the grain boundary core determined by the Mott-Schottky space charge layer model, which was 0.15 V for BZCYZn and 0.26 V for BZCY-ZnO. A cell with BZCYZn as the electrolyte generated a power density of 414.5 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C. The total ionic transport number of BZCYZn was determined to be similar to 0.90 at 600 degrees C under fuel cell conditions.
Ce0.8sm0.2o1.9 Decorated with Electron-Blocking Acceptor-Doped Baceo3 As Electrolyte for Low-Temperature Solid Oxide Fuel Cells

Abstract:A series of composites with nominal compositions of BaCe0.8Sm0.2O3-delta(BCS)-Ce0.8Sm0.2O1.9(SDC) (20:80, 35:65, 50:50, 65:35 wt.%) are synthesized by a modified citric acid-nitrate sol-gel combustion method and evaluated as the electrolytes for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). The TEM results show that doped BaCeO3 decorated SDC particles are formed after calcining at 1000 degrees C for 3 h. X-ray diffraction results reveal that the composites are only composed of BaCeO3-based and SDC phases without any other impurity phases. Besides, BaCeO3-based phase is uniformly distributed in the sintered electrolytes according to EDS element mapping. The open cell voltages (OCVs) of the single cells increase gradually with increasing the proportion of BaCeO3-based phase, and are higher than those for bare SDCbased cells. Besides, the power performances of the cells are superior to SDC-based cells when BaCeO3 based phase is lower than 35 wt.%. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy analysis indicates that, in addition to blocking electronic current leakage, BaCeO3-based phase would induce higher ohmic and polarization resistance, which is detrimental to power performance. Further specific effort should be focused on synthesizing uniform SDC@BCS core-shell electrolyte powders and minimizing the proportion of BCS phase towards high-performance SOFCs with high OCVs. A New Composite Proton Conductor As a High-Performance Electrolyte Toward Low-Temperature Protonic Ceramic Cells

Abstract:Protonic ceramic cells (PCCs) have drawn great attention on account of their reversibility and high efficiency. We propose a strategy to design a composite proton conductor composed of BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-delta (BZCY) and Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) sintered through ultrafast high-temperature sintering, showing a reduced sintering temperature of 1170 degrees C. BZCY particles are uniformly distributed within a continuously conformal framework formed by the low-melting LLZTO phase. The unique structural design avoids the sharp edge between BZCY particles caused by the soft LLZTO phase, resulting in faster proton migration at the grain boundary region. As a result, the new composite electrolyte exhibits a proton conductivity of 0.028 S cm(-1) at 600 degrees C, 4.5 times that of BZCY. Furthermore, we demonstrate that LLZTO exhibits considerable proton conductivity by combining our experimental and simulation results. This research advances the potential of combining proton and lithium-ion conducting composites with high proton conductivity and low sintering temperature for PCCs.

Abstract:BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3−δ (BZCY7) perovskite oxide was prepared by gel-casting and solid-state reaction techniques as proton-conducting electrolyte for low-temperature solid oxide fuel cells (LT-SOFCs). X-ray diffraction analysis indicated that the phase formation temperature of BZCY7 powder synthesized by gel-casting was 100–150°C lower than that by solid-state reaction method. The BZCY7 electrolytes prepared by gel-casting exhibited better sintering activity and higher electrical conductivity. After sintering at 1550°C for 5h, the relative density and electrical conductivity of the gel-casting derived BZCY7 reached 95% and 5×10−3S/cm in H2 (∼3% H2O) at 500°C. However, for the solid-state reaction method, the sample had a relative density of 86% and electrical conductivity of 2×10−3S/cm under the same condition.

Abstract:Ba 0.9 Sr 0.1 Ce 0.4 Zr 0.6− x Yb x O 3−δ ( x = 0.05, 0.1, 0.15, 0.2) proton-conducting electrolyte powders were synthesized by the nitrate combustion method. The effects of co-doping of Sr and Yb on the phase composition and electrochemical performance were studied. X-ray diffraction (XRD) results indicate that Sr and Yb were successfully doped into the lattice of BaCe 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 3 , forming a single perovskite phase. The AC impedance technique was used to investigate the total conductivity of the materials under air and water vapor atmospheres at 400–800°C. The results show that BSCZY20 demonstrated the highest electrical conductivity of 0.033 S cm −1 at 800°C in water vapor. This suggests that the co-doping strategy can effectively enhance the conductivity of BaCe 0.4 Zr 0.6 O 3 proton-conducting material, which provides valuable insight for the development of high-performance proton-conducting solid oxide fuel cells.

Coexistence of SDC and BZCYYb are observed for composite electrolyte by X-ray diffraction after sintering at 1500 degrees C for 5 h, while the slight deviation of the diffraction peak indicating the element diffusion between two phases. The scanning electron microscope and electron probe microanalyzer results demonstrate that small BZCYYb grains disperse uniformly around the grains of SDC, limiting the growth of SDC grains and decreasing the average grain size of composite electrolyte. Impedance spectroscopy measurement reveals that the grain boundary resistance can be significantly reduced by about an order of magnitude through adding 15-30 wt. % BZCYYb to SDC. Single cells based on the composite electrolyte are fabricated using nickel cermet (Ni-SDC) anode and perovskite (La0.6Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3-delta, LSCF) cathode. Relatively high open circuit voltage (OCV), much lower polarization resistance and encouraging high power density are obtained for cells with composite electrolyte compared to those with single SDC electrolyte. Among all of the samples, single cell based on 15 wt. % BZCYYb-85 wt. % SDC composite electrolyte exhibits the lowest total resistances of 0.641 Omega.cm(2) and the highest peak power densities of 0.56 W. cm(-2) at 600 degrees C. Properties of Novel BZCY-(Li/Na)(2)CO3 Composite Electrolytes for LT-SOFC

Abstract:BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O2.9 (BZCY) powder was synthesized by a homogeneous coprecipitation method, and the powder was mixed with carbonate to prepare the compound with different ratios of (Li/Na)(2)CO3. The structure and electrical properties of the composite electrolytes were characterized by SEM, XRD and TG-DTA. The results show that the carbonate in the amorphous form exists in the composite electrolytes, which reacts with BZCY to form BaCO3. The conductivities of the composite electrolytes reach 0.095 S.cm(-1) at 600 degrees C and 0.071 S.cm(-1) at 450 degrees C in air, while 0.126 S.cm(-1) at 600 degrees C and 0.075 S.cm(-1) at 450 degrees C in humidified hydrogen. The conductivity of the composite electrolytes is basically stable for a long time in 0.08 similar to 0.09 S.cm(-1) within 400 h at 600 degrees C. The single cell prepared with BZCY-20% (Li/Na)(2)CO3 composite electrolytes shows good output performance. The maximum power densities reach 741 mW.cm(-2) at 600 C-degrees and 258 mW.cm(-2) at 500 degrees C. When discharging with 0.6 A.cm(-2) at 600 degrees C, the output performance is basically kept above 300 mW.cm(-2) within 90 min.

Abstract:Solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) with high conversion efficiency has drawn great attention for a sustainable future. Its electrolyte, typically yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ), is usually sintered above 1400 °C with commercially available powder materials. Abstract:The perovskite-type Ba0.5Sr0.5Co0.8Fe0.2O3-δ–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (BSCF–BZCY) composite oxides were synthesized by a modified Pechini method and examined as a novel composite cathode for intermediate-to-low temperature protonic ceramic membrane fuel cells (ILT-PCMFCs). Thin proton-conducting BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (BZCY) electrolyte and NiO–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ (NiO–BZCY) anode functional layer were prepared over porous anode substrates composed of NiO–BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-δ by a one-step dry-pressing/co-firing process. A laboratory-sized quad-layer cell of NiO–BZCY/NiO–BZCY(∼50μm)/BZCY(∼20μm)/BSCF–BZCY(∼50μm) was operated from 550 to 700°C with humidified hydrogen (∼3% H2O) as fuel and the static air as oxidant. A high open-circuit potential of 1.009V, a maximum power density of 418mWcm−2, and a low polarization resistance of the electrodes of 0.10Ωcm2 was achieved at 700°C. These investigations have indicated that proton-conducting BZCY electrolyte with BSCF perovskite cathode is a promising material system for the next generation solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs).

Abstract:YBaCo3ZnO7+delta (YBCZ) was synthesized and used as the cathode materials for proton-conducting SOFCs successfully. The single cell, consisting of a BaZr0.1Ce0.7Y0.2O3-delta (BZCY7)-NiO anode substrate, a BZCY7 anode functional layer, a BZCY7 electrolyte membrane and an YBCZ cathode layer, was assembled and tested from 600 to 700 degrees C with humidified hydrogen (similar to 3% H2O) as the fuel and static air as the oxidant. An open-circuit potential of 0.98 V and a maximum power density of 307 mW cm(-2) at 700 degrees C were obtained.
