Publishing Research in China: History, Characteristics, and Challenges

Abstract:Chinese publishing science has its own theoretical origins and unique characteristics. Since 1970s, publishing as a science has grown up rapidly in China. This paper presents a structured overview of Chinese publishing research in its full historical depth and thematic breadth. It first introduces a brief history of publishing science in China, and then identifies the main characteristics and key areas of research. Consistent with the divide in social research, the debate between positivistic and naturalistic paradigms has also characterized the development of global publishing science. The interpretivist paradigm of Chinese publishing research leads to unique research subjects and methods. The subjects, on the one hand, are more focused on meta-theory. Theory building and integration has been the main goal in the past three decades. The methods, on the other hand, have been generally qualitative, including historical, interpretive, and critical analysis. Current key research areas include theoretical construction of publishing science, history of publishing, cultural studies of publishing, publishing economics, digital publishing and copyright. This paper also discusses the challenges facing publishing researchers in China and their possible solutions.

Abstract:This study attempted to illuminate the cause and relation between government, scholars, disciplines, and societal aspects, presenting data from a content analysis of published research with the key word science communication(????)in the title or in the key words, including academic papers published in journals and dissertations from the China National Knowledge Infrastructure database. Of these, 572 articles were coded using categories that identified science topics, theory, authorship, and methods used in each study to examine the breadth and depth that Science Communication has achieved since its inception in China. This study explored the dominance of History and Philosophy of Science scholars rather than Communication scholars. We also explored how science communication research began from theories and concepts instead of science report analysis and the difficulties of the shift from public understanding of science to public engagement in China.

Abstract:Abstract China has attached a great significance to bringing science to the public—known as kepu (科普, ‘science popularization’) or kexue chuanbo (科学传播, ‘science dissemination’)—in recent years, partly in response to its unprecedented push for innovation in science and technology. In 2018, it spent 16 billion yuan (US$2.3 billion) on such endeavours, nearly 80% of which was government funding, according to a survey conducted by the Ministry of Science and Technology. With one science-education venue for every million people, approximately 76 million visits were made to the country's 518 general-science museums and 142 million visits were made to 943 museums dedicated to a specific subject matter, such as the Geological Museum of China. In a forum chaired by National Science Review’s executive editor-in-chief, Mu-ming Poo, scientists, journalists and public-information officers discussed the differences in science communication between China and developed nations, the challenges and opportunities of raising scientific literacy in China, how it has played out in a wide range of controversial topics, from stem-cell research to climate change, and the importance of international collaboration. Abstract:This article critically traces the development of science communication in China in the past 30 years. While confirming the tremendous progress Chinese science communicators have achieved in popularising science, it argues that the deficit model-based popularisation effort cannot meet the diversifying demands on science in Chinese society. Citing both recent science and technology controversies and active public participation in science pilot initiatives in China, this article concludes that science communication efforts in the country must be focused on constructive dialogues and public engagement with science.

Abstract:A lot of progress has been made in the research of social responsibility of scientists in China for the past ten years.Researchers have conducted studies mainly around some problems such as the origin and evolution of the scientists’ social responsibility issue and its connotations and basic contents.These researches reflect the characteristics of taking all the scientists as a whole,using qualitative analysis methods,and putting human development at the foremost.Future studies need to define the basic contents of the research subject and ways to carry out the studies.It is also necessary to construct the internalization mechanism of scientists’ social responsibility,and to strengthen the relationship between scientific research and ethic studies so to promote the research on scientists’ social responsibility.

Abstract:The author chooses the five most important Chinese publications directly related to the history of science.After reading all the issues since Jan.2000,he picks some treatises that focus on contemporary issues and classifies them into six categories,which are Chinese-medicine,science systems and policies in modern China,the spread of science,scientism,the Needham Issue and theories on the history of science.Blending the controversies in these six aspects,some cultural background,and the essence of dozens of treatises,the author thoroughly reviews the studies of the history of science in China since 2000.This article also covers the changes in Chinese scholars' concern over the history of science in recent years.

Abstract:This article offers a review of the Chinese-language literature on environmental communication in mainland China. In particular, it discusses the main features, promises, and limitations of the relevant literature. All academic papers matching particular keywords for environmental communication in seven top-ranking Chinese-language media and communication journals (four in mainland China, one in Hong Kong, and two in Taiwan) were collected and analysed quantitatively. The first section of the article presents the findings of the quantitative analysis based on several aspects, including the journals’ main interests, distribution of publications over time, types of topics, research methods, leading authors in the field, their choices of research methods and topics, and the inclusion of English-language literature. The article turns to qualitatively examining the wider available Chinese-language literature on environmental communication. It then evaluates the current status of and challenges to Chinese-language research in this field and suggests some directions for future research.

Abstract:The inaugural "Mr. Science" Science Communication Conference was held in Suzhou, China on July 9, 2021. It was the largest Chinese conference on science communication study since the start of the 21st century. More than 260 scholars discussed the spirit and culture of science, science communication during the COVID-19 crisis, the public understanding of science, and the ethical aspects of science communication. The conference aimed to develop a system for researching science communication within China. This review outlines the content of the conference and summarizes the key trends in science communication research in China.

Abstract:Scholars argue that the history of communication technology is a history of social change, often in unpredictable ways under the influence of various socio-political forces and technological innovations. How does this insight apply to China which has witnessed a boom of new media technologies amidst rapid social change? To what extent does new media research conducted by Chinese scholars help us understand the process of new media diffusion and consumption in China? By reviewing research published in Chinese-language scholarly journals, this paper reviews current new media research in China by tracing trends in such research, identifying research agenda, applications of theory, and use of methodology. Gaps in Chinese new media research will be explored; directions that lead to further research will be suggested.

Abstract:From the perspectives of current philosophy of science and sociology of science, this paper analyzes a science culture inherent in the different versions of history, Chinese, and physics textbooks in the 20th century. It claims that this sort of science culture should be reconsidered and consummated in the following aspects: with regard to the notion of science, and hypothesis should be taken as the most important parts of scientific activities. Meanwhile, it is necessary to clarify science as a sort of social institution. As for the values of science, these textbooks should clearly illustrate the negative and inherent values to students. In respect of science development, these textbooks must substitutehistory of science problems for history of science achievements or history of heroes, which emphasizes the vital role of science problems, debates and community in the process of science progress. At last, given the images of scientists, some professional virtues and qualities should be demonstrated sufficiently.
