Abstract:When it comes to the volume of Englishlanguage articles published in international journals, Chinese scientists are second only to those in the United States (Editorial, 2010), but this is not the case for academic journals published in English. The total world-wide number of English-language academic journals published in 2011 was 67 546 (Ulrich’s Serial Analysis System, 2011); however, current statistics for China are not yet available, potentially because the management department concerned is somewhat slow and inefficient in their work. Our own research determined that according to the following resources: The Academic Department of China Association for Science and Technology (2011) claimed that as of June 2009 China published 212 English-language Sci-Tech journals; The General Administration of Press and Publication (GAPP) of the People’s Republic of China reported that between 2005 to 2009, the number of academic journals approved to publish in English was 25 (Institute of Media for Foreign Language Teaching of Zhejiang University, 2010). Based on these statistics, we estimate that the total number of academic journals published in English in mainland China is, so far, still under 250, less than 5% of the academic journals ever published in the country, despite the fact that the Chinese government has recently encouraged publishers to produce English-language academic journals. Academic journals are believed to be one of the most effective methods to disseminate a country’s technological achievements and a nation’s cultural concepts. In order to make China’s knowledge base and cultural ideas accessible to the rest of the world, many Chinese-language academic journals publish titles, key words and abstracts in English. China’s academic journals hope to attract international attention and be included in citation indexes such as Science Citation Index (SCI), Engineering Index (EI), Social Science Citation Index (SSCI), and Arts and Humanity Citation Index (A&HCI). In order to accomplish this, China’s academic journals need editors who possess English-language proficiency and are able to judge, proofread and polish texts or abstracts written in English by Chinese writers; however, there is doubt as to whether these journals have enough qualified English-language editors. The quality of China’s academic journals in regard to English language proficiency is unclear. This paper reports on the findings of four projects commissioned by GAPP and offers reasons for the deficiency of English language capacity of Chinese editors of academic journals through a survey of the qualification of 518 English editors for 469 Chinese academic journals, and proposes suggestions to solve the problems identified. Abstract:Traditional media are facing a crisis of declining trust, public disengagement, and declining revenue. More and more people are avoiding and rejecting traditional news because of its depressing effect on their feelings. The constructive journalism movement seeks to correct the negative bias of traditional journalism, strengthen the connection between the media industry and its audience, and reestablish the authority and legitimacy of journalism. This new model of journalism can give hope to a life that is "not-yet" and encourage people to move forward to solve social problems with a positive mindset. In the current era of public communications, constructive journalism offers a new option for people to rethink the many possibilities for journalists, the news communication system, and the journalism industry and thus shape their own social roles and positioning.

Abstract:“China’s internationalization” is in part realized through the dissemination of Chinese publications, such as academic journals. Therefore, editorial proficiency in the English language is of vital importance to the quality of the journals. This article analyzes the results of the two projects sponsored by the General Administration of Press and Publication of the People’s Republic of China in 2007 and 2010 respectively, namely the “Analytical Evaluation of Language and Editing Quality of Chinese Academic Journals in English Language Issued in 2006”, and the “Evaluation of Publication Quality of the China-Grown English Periodicals Issued in 2009, Sanctioned from 2005 to 2009”, and proposes solutions to the problems presented therein.

Abstract:Audience research has gotten outstanding achievement in the communication research filed in China. However,today's audience research does not seem to continue such achievement,but lack in breakthroughs of new theory on the whole.At the beginning of audience research in China,with the purpose of press reform,the early researchers chose an orientation of scientism.Not long afterwards,as the present of decision - making value and market value,practical research became the mainstream.Audience research in China has on one hand lost ability of theoretical creativity out of over stress on the decision - making and market value of research,on the other hand lost in straits of theoretical ceasing out of blind worship on formalism practical research.Audience research will gain breakthrough providing that it not only avoid administration - ism and merchandise - ism,abandon purpose of instrumental reason,but also get rid of blind worship on scientism,and further strengthen the understanding and interpretation of humanism tradition.

Abstract:Nowadays,new technologies are reinventing journalism,the study of journalism in China is facing structural difficulties,cognitive changes,and practical confusion.In the face of the complex social network interwoven with people and things,the journalism theory driven by the logic of"thingology"no longer has explanatory power,and there is an urgent need for a new perspective to re-understand the material,emotional,and relational changes occurring in Journalism.Therefore,this article introduces the theory of"social world"from the perspective of materialist phenomenology,following the principles of"interactional practices in context","relational forms",and"construction of order".By revisiting the topics of Chinese journalism research in 2023,the study tries to respond to how journalism theories and organizational and propaganda practices in the digital era should be carried out under the orientation of humanism.Finally,the paper puts forward a perspective towards"News-World",which is both to understand journalism's role in the social world and to understand the social world we live in through journalistic practices.

Abstract:We conclude that journalism is not an entirely mature profession.Journalism professionalism is being shaped.In fact,affected by culture,social system and personal education,Chinese journalists today are hard to be called a professional staff.Journalism education has not acquired enough dignity and high evaluation from journalists.Some people think there is a long distance between education and practice;others feel a lack of things to be compared with students in other professions.Talking with interviewees,we notice that there is a wrong idea that indicated journalism education is of no use.Some media even consider refusing students of journalism major.In our opinion,it does not match the international trend and is to some extend a denial of Chinese journalism education.We find benefits from professional journalism education as follows:Firstly,it can advance journalists' sense of responsibility;secondly,it can cultivate their professional ethics;thirdly,it can teach journalists advanced writing and management skills;fourthly,it can offer journalists wide a global outlook;fifthly,it can offer them a profound background of humanism and social sciences.There are some obvious problems in the Chinese journalism education.Firstly,training of professional skills has to be strengthened.The current training education cannot prepare students to handle the practical work in a short time.Secondly,the journalism education lacks hardware,which means that it is difficult for students to command the professional skills.Thirdly,education of theory and practice is somehow disjointed.In order to solve these problems,universities have to collaborate with the media,while the media can participate in journalism education,too.If allowed,universities can even cultivate journalists for the media with certain direction.
Publishing Research in China: History, Characteristics, and Challenges

Abstract:Chinese publishing science has its own theoretical origins and unique characteristics. Since 1970s, publishing as a science has grown up rapidly in China. This paper presents a structured overview of Chinese publishing research in its full historical depth and thematic breadth. It first introduces a brief history of publishing science in China, and then identifies the main characteristics and key areas of research. Consistent with the divide in social research, the debate between positivistic and naturalistic paradigms has also characterized the development of global publishing science. The interpretivist paradigm of Chinese publishing research leads to unique research subjects and methods. The subjects, on the one hand, are more focused on meta-theory. Theory building and integration has been the main goal in the past three decades. The methods, on the other hand, have been generally qualitative, including historical, interpretive, and critical analysis. Current key research areas include theoretical construction of publishing science, history of publishing, cultural studies of publishing, publishing economics, digital publishing and copyright. This paper also discusses the challenges facing publishing researchers in China and their possible solutions.

Abstract:In recent years,studies on the impact of internet on civil society in China become a heated field.We review present studies and point out their weaknesses here in a critical and reflective way.First,thanks to NGOs' contribution in 2008 Wenchuan great earthquake,many scholars overestimate the development of civil society in China;second,under western centrism and technological determinism,they simply interpret the internet as a platform for social forces to challenge the state;third,as to the issue of web public sphere,thinness of theoretical resources,inadequate inquiries of group polarization,and simplistic understanding of rationality in online discussion are major drawbacks.At last,to further the research,we propose some approaches:multiply theoretical foundations,shift research perspectives,explore new research methods and select proper methodology consciously and reflectively.

Abstract:The emergence of new information and communication technologies and new social communication practices has called for the transformation of communication studies.Communication researchers have been asking a number of questions:Can the new information and communication technologies lead to a paradigm shift in communication theories?Are classic communication theories still applicable to the new media environment?What are the new research questions that emerge in the new media age?What are the interactions between the new information and communication technologies and new media research?How do the new media studies transform the current communication research?How should Chinese new media research be developed under the background of globalization and unique context of Chinese society and culture ? Based on the review of previous research,this study analyzes three approaches to new media studies,namely social scientific,critical,and interpretive paradigms,and reveals three findings.First,it is the changing communication activities and practices in which people engage that lead to the changing views of communication,such as a shift from″media-audience″study to ″new media-user″study.Moreover,the development of new media industry not only generates new research objects and theories,but offers new perspectives and methods to test classic theories.Second,in examining the relationship between new media technologies and social change,this study concludes that technological determinism is usually a dominant paradigm in the early phase of new media technologies.As these new technologies diffuse,researchers will turn to a social shaping perspective that focuses on how new media technologies are shaped by various social forces on the one hand,and are shaping social life in socio-historical contexts on the other.Third,the emergence of new media events has become a unique and influential communication phenomenon that attracts the attention of a large number of Chinese communication researchers.Nevertheless,most of these studies are case studies and are limited to the application of western theories to the Chinese society,thus failing to provide any insight into the communication mechanism in the Chinese new media environment.Against such a backdrop,this study suggests apossible direction for Chinese scholars to facilitate a″cultural shift″of new media research,to adopt the″thick description″method of cultural sociology to reveal the specific implications of new media events,and to uncover the socio-psychological consequences of these events and their associated social factors in the Chinese context.The goal is to highlight the interplay of different social forces in new media studies in transitional China.Meanwhile,scholars should take advantage of new media technologies to develop new research methods and procedures,to explore unique research questions in the Chinese social and cultural context,and to generate new theories that can facilitate the development of communication research.

Abstract:This paper takes a review on journalism studies papers published in the journals from CSSCI in 2022, and summarizes four kinds of “symptoms” which indicates paradigm change of Chinese journalism studies—toward post-human, toward post-modern, toward social relation network, and toward ideology, and shows how those symptoms are embodied in these papers. These “symptoms” not only show the turmoil and crisis within Chinese journalism studies, but also indicate the new path it will take to make a breakthrough. If the journalism studies with Chinese characteristics wants to truly go towards the practice of historical materialism in the new era, it should respond to these “symptoms” profoundly through their internal logic.

Abstract:In the academic context of China,the definition of the main concept of journalism, "news," has remained unchanged for over half a century. Limiting its generic concept to "report" reflects a lack of theoretical grounding and contextual understanding,resulting in generalization and operationalization. This paper argues that the generic concepts of news can be defined as information production,episteme,and landscape representation,viewed from the perspectives of news subject,audience perception,and media representation. These definitions connect to Marxism political economy,sociology of knowledge,phenomenology,and other theories,supporting journalism’s evolution from a normative discipline to an exploratory science. Redefining the generic concepts of news comprehensively examines the ontology and epistemology of journalism,inspiring imagination and combating "the poverty of journalism" caused by the generalization of the knowledge system.

Abstract:The birth of Chinese journalism and journalism history is inseparable from the so-called problem of modernity,namely the problem of "ancient and modern,Chinese and Western" in Chinese context.There are two ideas about the modernity and its discourse to date,one is the evolutionary idea from the traditional to the modern,including the liberalization path of "advancing to the world","in line with international practice" and "wholesale Westernization",and the revolutionization path of "national independence","national liberation" and People's freedom;the other is the culturalism idea from the civilization system to the modern system.Accordingly,it seems that the studies of journalism history can be categorized into different types.This paper makes a preliminary reflection and exploration on it,in the hope of secking after the internal logic of the Chinese journalism in the broad background of civilization.

Abstract:In recent years,more attention has been directed to problems in the studies of international relations in China,namely,separation of theory and practice,lack of originality in theory,methodology that lags behind,irregular academic criteria and weakness in academic criticism.As a result of reflections on these issues,the author suggests that being aware of these problems in our own studies will promote combination of international relation theories with practice and will be a means to ensure theoretical innovation.We should take advantage of our tradition in emphasizing history to enhance dialogue between theory and history,reinforce researches on methodology by adding to our store of knowledge skills of quantitative studies and improving our ability to conduct qualitative studies.Meanwhile,we should not neglect establishment of academic criteria to carry out academic criticism scientifically.
Recontextualizing Constructive Journalism in Contemporary China: A Comparative and Intercultural Perspective

Abstract:By adopting a scholarly perspective on comparative journalism and intercultural communication, the present study delineates the conceptual common ground in terms of defining constructive journalism (CJ) and lays out the theoretical foundation for further discussion of this practical recontextualization in China's social and cultural contexts. The indigenous tradition of "public opinion surveillance" (POS) in China is traced out in comparison with the experiment of CJ and its derivatives like public/civic journalism in Western countries. In spite of different news philosophies and media eco-systems, promoting social reform and serving the people or the public constitute the common goals for both Chinese and Western journalists and media professionals. Notably, exploring the theoretical validity and practical applications of CJ and POS would provide a feasible entry point to the cross-cultural dialogue between the East and the West about news media innovation.

Crisis Research in China under the Perspective of Public Administration:Past Patterns,Current Trends and Future Directions

Abstract:Chinese researchers from the social science areas have conducted crisis research for a decade.This paper aims to review the development of Chinese crisis research under the lens of public administration.The literature mainly comes from selected mainstream journals in public administration,political science,management science,and general social science.A small amount of literature is identified by the authors based on personal expertise.After coding the literature based on our categorizing dimensions,we analyze the past research areas,current trends and research methods adopted.Based on the analysis,this paper tries to portray some tentative future directions of crisis research in China.The analysis indicates that: [1] current research focuses mainly on the prior-crisis phase instead of the during-crisis phase or post-crisis phase;[2] the method of normative analysis has been adopted in most studies while theory development or testing has been less emphasized;[3] all-hazard analysis has been commonly discussed,while in-depth single hazard study is rare.We also find that in recent years,crisis research in China moves towards several new trends.These trends include that: [1] the number of the during-crisis and post-crisis analysis is slightly increasing;[2] theory development and test attracts academic attention;and [3] a growing number of researchers try to explore the social riots.This research captures the current territory of crisis research under the perspective of public administration based on research data coming from mainstream Chinese journals in the field.
