Abstract:Communication Studies in Chinese mainland start from the most practical spheres of audience research,media management and environmental studies.Introductory articles about Western communication theories and methods also account for a high proportion.Studies on the media literacy and public communication appear until relatively recent years,and the number of organizational communication and interpersonal communication research is still fairly small. The number of studies based on the cases of Chinese mainland is in exponential increase.Moreover,with the increase of international exchanges and the expansion of researcher's academic view in communication,there are more research findings in the communication mechanisms of European countries and the United States,especially in public communication, of which China showed an obvious lack.

Abstract:Abstract Since China officially gained access to the Internet in 1994, Internet-based communication has gradually become the dominant form of communication within Chinese society and between China and the international community. Understanding the Internet and its impact on China is not only a key to understanding modern China and its relationship with the world, but also a powerful complement to the classical topics of communication and an indispensable observation on new developments. Combing through the transformation of Internet-based communication research in China, this paper summarizes the achievements in five key areas, reflects on the failures, and makes a call to return to the core relationship between communication and people.

Abstract:Studies of mass communication in China since the year 1978 have undergone three important stages of development.Despite all the criticisms and doubts therein,remarkable progress has been made.At the same time,there are quite a few problems that are worthy of attention: measure-based researches outweigh basic ones,there exists a remarkable rupture inside the discipline which calls for better communication,the right of speaking and power of influence at major issues are weak,and the academic system in the field under discussion is far from sound.To usher in better development in the future,we should further strengthen theoretical construction on the basis of the present empirical studies,pay more attention to rewriting the history of mass communication thoughts,make more in-depth case studies from the angle of anthropology and sociology,and make critical and interpretive studies on media culture.

Abstract:This paper offers a thorough review of the development of international studies in China over the past decade in terms of specific research areas and topics.The review covers both macro and micro issues,among which are hot issues like Marxist theories on international relations,theories of realism,studies of the international regime,constructivism school,discussions about international strategies,process of globalization,international economical politics,studies on the United Nations,nationalism,regionalism,feminism and so on.The paper also analyzes micro issues such as politics and culture,ecological politics,ethics in international relations,subdisciplines such as the British school and the Copenhagen school,and studies on sovereignty,security,benefits of the state,methodology and the Chinese characters as well.In fact,all the major issues and research topics discussed in the academic circle are included in this survey.The author not only provides a brief summary of the achievements in these research areas and the background of the researches,but also offers to comment on the existing problems and suggests diretions for future studies,with emphasis placed on the importance and hardships of this discipline in China today.

Abstract:This essay summarizes the research of Ancient Chinese Literature and its achievements in 2006.It analyses and reviews the research of Ancient Chinese Literature from the following aspects:the development of the subject,the research focus,existing problems and so on.Also,it points out that the research of Ancient Chinese Literature has made great progress and many new contributions in 2005.At the same time,the essay indicates some problems that demand efforts in this field,such as the issue of attitude and common practice of researchers,the issue of bringing forth new ideas and the issue of pushing forward the research of Ancient Chinese Literature in full scale.
The Transformation of Communication Studies in the New Media Age

Abstract:The emergence of new information and communication technologies and new social communication practices has called for the transformation of communication studies.Communication researchers have been asking a number of questions:Can the new information and communication technologies lead to a paradigm shift in communication theories?Are classic communication theories still applicable to the new media environment?What are the new research questions that emerge in the new media age?What are the interactions between the new information and communication technologies and new media research?How do the new media studies transform the current communication research?How should Chinese new media research be developed under the background of globalization and unique context of Chinese society and culture ? Based on the review of previous research,this study analyzes three approaches to new media studies,namely social scientific,critical,and interpretive paradigms,and reveals three findings.First,it is the changing communication activities and practices in which people engage that lead to the changing views of communication,such as a shift from″media-audience″study to ″new media-user″study.Moreover,the development of new media industry not only generates new research objects and theories,but offers new perspectives and methods to test classic theories.Second,in examining the relationship between new media technologies and social change,this study concludes that technological determinism is usually a dominant paradigm in the early phase of new media technologies.As these new technologies diffuse,researchers will turn to a social shaping perspective that focuses on how new media technologies are shaped by various social forces on the one hand,and are shaping social life in socio-historical contexts on the other.Third,the emergence of new media events has become a unique and influential communication phenomenon that attracts the attention of a large number of Chinese communication researchers.Nevertheless,most of these studies are case studies and are limited to the application of western theories to the Chinese society,thus failing to provide any insight into the communication mechanism in the Chinese new media environment.Against such a backdrop,this study suggests apossible direction for Chinese scholars to facilitate a″cultural shift″of new media research,to adopt the″thick description″method of cultural sociology to reveal the specific implications of new media events,and to uncover the socio-psychological consequences of these events and their associated social factors in the Chinese context.The goal is to highlight the interplay of different social forces in new media studies in transitional China.Meanwhile,scholars should take advantage of new media technologies to develop new research methods and procedures,to explore unique research questions in the Chinese social and cultural context,and to generate new theories that can facilitate the development of communication research.

Abstract:This research is based on a statistical analysis of the database of Chinese National Knowledge Infrastructure(CNKI).It analyzes the contents,variety,quantity,trend and focuses of the journal articles in the field of computer-mediated communication(CMC) and aims to quantitatively examine the academic development,disciplinary relevance,and the influence of on academic production in CMC in mainland China since 1994.The findings are as follows: CMC studies in mainland China are highly interdisciplinary,with different sub-disciplines penetrating each other and interacting with each other;the development of CMC,technological development within the industry and the market synchronize with each other — the more practical the research is,the more of its development is determined by market demands;quantitatively,the scale of academic research is powerfully restrained by external factors stemming from the state power;ideological restraints in humanity studies and social sciences,however,have caused some rebounce: the stricter the restraints,the more popular the research.Generally speaking,the academic development of CMC studies in mainland China go through the following phases: initial prosperity-precipitation and stagnation-intensification-neo-prosperity.

Abstract:This article offers a review of the Chinese-language literature on environmental communication in mainland China. In particular, it discusses the main features, promises, and limitations of the relevant literature. All academic papers matching particular keywords for environmental communication in seven top-ranking Chinese-language media and communication journals (four in mainland China, one in Hong Kong, and two in Taiwan) were collected and analysed quantitatively. The first section of the article presents the findings of the quantitative analysis based on several aspects, including the journals’ main interests, distribution of publications over time, types of topics, research methods, leading authors in the field, their choices of research methods and topics, and the inclusion of English-language literature. The article turns to qualitatively examining the wider available Chinese-language literature on environmental communication. It then evaluates the current status of and challenges to Chinese-language research in this field and suggests some directions for future research.

Abstract:This paper applies bibliometrics visualization analysis software CiteSpace-6.1.6 and CNKI as the data source and analyzes the literature published in domestic journals during 1994-2022, in order to understand the development trend and main issues of cross-cultural communication in the field of international Chinese education. The results of bibliometric cluster analysis show that in the past 30 years, the research topics in this field mainly focus on 17 clusters, including “culture”, “Chinese language”, “cultural communication”, “differences”, “international students”, “cultural differences”, “Chinese as a foreign language”, “cultural connotation”, “foreign language teaching” and “cross-cultural”. According to the analysis of cited information, “cultural difference”, “pragmatic mistakes”, “Chinese as a foreign language”, “cultural communication”, “cross-culture”, “cultural teaching” and “cultural difference” are the most concerned topics. “Case study” and “teaching design” are the research trends and hot spots in this field in the past two years. This paper not only reviews the history of cross-cultural studies in international Chinese education, but also looks forward to the future development of cross-cultural studies in international Chinese education.

Abstract:Discourse Studies, Ahead of Print. Since critical discourse analysis (CDA) was introduced to China in 1990s, it has developed into an influential and thriving field. This article reviews the development of CDA in China from 2011 to 2021, during which CDA had thrived to be a productive field in terms of the in-depth theoretical and methodological explorations and the overwhelming majority of empirical studies which considerably expanded its scope to a much wider range of discourses. It also came to involve a broader array of disciplines including corpus linguistics, cognitive linguistics, multimodality, translation studies, and eco-linguistics. It can be found that while keeping pace with the international CDA studies, Chinese scholars consistently gear CDA to China's social, political, and cultural contexts and strive to use CDA to deliberate on and solve social problems in contemporary Chinese society. This brief review endeavors to communicate with the international academia regarding the latest developments of CDA in China.

A comparative study on communication structures of Chinese journals in the social sciences

Abstract:We argue that the communication structures in the Chinese social sciences have not yet been sufficiently reformed. Citation patterns among Chinese domestic journals in three subject areas—political science and Marxism, library and information science, and economics—are compared with their counterparts internationally. Like their colleagues in the natural and life sciences, Chinese scholars in the social sciences provide fewer references to journal publications than their international counterparts; like their international colleagues, social scientists provide fewer references than natural sciences. The resulting citation networks, therefore, are sparse. Nevertheless, the citation structures clearly suggest that the Chinese social sciences are far less specialized in terms of disciplinary delineations than their international counterparts. Marxism studies are more established than political science in China. In terms of the impact of the Chinese political system on academic fields, disciplines closely related to the political system are less specialized than those weakly related. In the discussion section, we explore reasons that may cause the current stagnation and provide policy recommendations.
