Abstract:Abstract Since China officially gained access to the Internet in 1994, Internet-based communication has gradually become the dominant form of communication within Chinese society and between China and the international community. Understanding the Internet and its impact on China is not only a key to understanding modern China and its relationship with the world, but also a powerful complement to the classical topics of communication and an indispensable observation on new developments. Combing through the transformation of Internet-based communication research in China, this paper summarizes the achievements in five key areas, reflects on the failures, and makes a call to return to the core relationship between communication and people.

Abstract:The paper analyses history book review data collected from CSSCI journals, and concludes that history book reviews occupy only a small portion of history literature, that most of history journals publish book reviews, that such book reviewers are all senior professionals. And that most of history book reviews nowadays are only one or three years away from the publication date of the books concerned. It also raises the questions concerning their shortage of accuracy, professionalism and academic value.

Abstract:This paper presents a thematic analysis of articles (N = 608) published in three major journals in intercultural communication research, within the timeframe of 2003–2013. The journals included are Journal of International and Intercultural Communication, Journal of Intercultural Communication Research, and International Journal of Intercultural Relations. Eight themes were identified, namely (1) identity, (2) acculturation and global migration, (3) communication dynamics, (4) intercultural competence, (5) theories, models, scales, and frameworks, (6) perception, prejudice, stereotypes, and discrimination, (7) cross-cultural differences, and (8) intercultural education, training, and study abroad. Each of these themes is discussed in relation to implications for future research.

The Chicago school exams communication in the perspective of social relations and has the wish to bring the society back to the good old days by means of mass commumcation. Lipperman focuses on the criticism of the hypocrisy of a democratic society and regards that mass media cannot help to establish the relationship between people with people, and between people with the reality; instead, it is likely to be used by people. The studies of mass communication consider that mass media is completely the instrument of social control and due to this reason, effect studies becomes the most important aspect of studies.

Abstract:[Purpose/Significance]Under the new media environment,the review of the studies which have evaluated international influ-ence of academic achievement in social science,can help push ahead with the related research.[Method/process]Therefore,we summa-rize the research literatures in terms of the construction of evaluation index,the correlation of evaluation index,the international influence of scholars and institutions, and the international influence of academic journals.[Result/Conclusion]However, problems do exist with current researches,for example,there are few studies on the application of complex network and Altmetrics,few researches on the interna-tional influence of English social science journals sponsored by China,and few works on Chinese journals cited by foreign journals. This work also illustrates some avenues for future research,for example,scholars can introduce Altmetrics indicators to evaluate international in-fluence from multiple perspectives,or use the complex network theory to study the international citation networks and co-author networks.

Abstract:This study presents data from a content analysis of original research articles published in Journal of Health Communication (JOHC) andHealth Communication (HC) from 2010 to 2019. The authors coded 2,050 articles using categories that identified health topics, theory, population characteristics, and methods used in each study. Distinctions between the published research in JOHCand HCare highlighted. Across both journals, articles are primarily conducted within the United States, most frequently use college student samples, often lack explicit theoretical frameworks, heavily rely on online survey methods, and most commonly use quantitative methodologies. The most frequently utilized theory across both journals wasSocial Cognitive Theory and the most studied health topic were behaviors related to smoking, tobacco, and e-cigarette use. The journals were significantly different in several areas, with HC containing more articles explicitly guided by theory and publishing more qualitative research, while JOHC had more racial diversity in its study samples. Results are discussed in terms of their implications for future research. Increased diversity in methodology and samples, as well as increased use of theory and continued use of interdisciplinary collaborations among researchers will allow for expanding and enhancing health communication knowledge going forward.

Abstract:The field of environmental communication has reached several milestones since the 1990s, particularly the establishment of environmental communication-related divisions at professional associations and the founding of the journal Environmental Communication in 2007. This systematic review characterizes the peer-reviewed literature on environmental communication to date, examining methods, geography, top-cited articles, and analyzing keyword and titles. Drawing on the Web of Science Core Collection, which archives the Social Sciences Citation Index and the Arts & Humanities Citation Index, the review finds that attention to environmental communication has exploded in recent years and that the field is methodologically open-minded. Scholars have shifted focus from general environmental risk to specifically climate change in the last decade. Implications for the field are discussed.

Abstract:This paper ponders on the academic development of college journalism and communication in China during the past 3 decades from the perspective of experience,problems and outlook.There are 5 experiences: the support of the funda-mental policies of opening and reform,emancipating the mind and moving steadily,opening to outside and attracting overseas intellectuals,hanging on both fundamental and applicative research,and earnestly improving research methods.The problems include less understanding to the concepts and categories,less learning consciousness and courage and less symbolized achievement.In future,it is necessary to make planning,to conquer key problems and to provide condition for yielding sym-bolized achievement.

Abstract:This paper reviews 98 papers on microblogging studies published in IS top journals and conference proceedings to assess existing theoretical foundations,methodological approaches,topic areas and levels of analysis.The results show that,firstly,relevant theories in the disciplines of information systems,marketing,sociology and psychology are combined together in microblogging research;secondly,multiple methodological approaches such as case study,secondary data,content analysis,survey and mathematical modeling,are adopted in microblogging research;thirdly,microblogging research can be classified into 9 topic areas,including user behavior,internet word-of-mouth,information diffusion,organizational strategy,organizational performance,e-government,group decision and social computing,as well as system and tool;and finally,three levels of analysis in microblogging research are identified,namely information,service and network.Based on these analyses,this paper examines current status of microblogging research from the level of information and service in order to provide a comprehensive understanding of microblogging research.Directions for future researches are also suggested in this paper.

Abstract:Different disciplines have studied the content of online user comments in various contexts, using manual qualitative/quantitative or (semi-)automated approaches. The broad spectrum and disciplinary divides make it difficult to grasp an overview of those aspects which have already been examined, e.g. to identify findings related to one's own research, recommendable methodological approaches, and under-researched topics. We introduce a systematic literature review concerning content analyses of user comments in a journalistic context. Our review covers 192 papers identified through a systematic search focussing on communication studies and computer science. We find that research predominantly concentrates on the comment sections of Anglo-American newspaper brands and on aspects like hate speech, general incivility, or users' opinions on specific issues, while disregarding media from other parts of the world, comments in social media, propaganda, and constructive comments. From our results we derive a research agenda that addresses research gaps and also highlights potentials for automating analyses as well as for cooperation across disciplines.

Theoretical and Practical Issues of Journalism

Abstract:The article presents the findings of the analysis of the ten-year review of the research published in the academic journal "Issues of Theory and Practice of Journalism". The study addresses the questions of how successful the journal has been, its role in communication between researchers in the scientific field of “Mass Communication. Journalism. MEDIA”. The study employed statistical analysis of an extensive database of all articles published in the journal over the period of ten years. The main scientific metric indicators of the journal and their dynamics are given. We revealed the changes of the following indicators: a two-year impact factor of the journal for the entire period of its existence; data on citation of articles published in the journal, data on authors, a five-year Herfindahl index for citing journals and organizations of authors; a ten-year Hirsch index, demand for journal articles in the scientific community; number of issues, number of articles, average size of an article (number of pages), structure of affiliated authors of articles of the journal Issues of Theory and Practice of Journalism by scientific status and structure of authors — doctors and candidates of sciences in scientific specialties, structure of titles of the journal Issues of Theory and Practice of Journalism. We found that the scientific metric indicators of the journal show constant growth. The authors of the journal represent vast geography, high status and various academic majors. The journal consistently follows a policy of careful consideration of all articles, “blind” review by at least two experts, and through editing of each potential publication. The list of headings in the journal is a flexible tool for updating the issues that arise in the theory and practice of journalism. The journal is built as a platform not only for scientific communication at the interregional, international and regional levels, but also for scientific “roll call” between representatives of different scientific fields — both socio-humanitarian and mathematical.

Abstract:Comparative studies of journalism have gained considerable currency in recent years, and are often considered to be at the cutting edge of journalism studies. Yet, there has been relatively little systematic examination of the growth of comparative journalism studies or in-depth analysis of the power relations within the field in relation to, for example, trends in authorship or dominant methodologies and paradigms. This article reports the results of a systematic review of comparative studies of journalism published between 2000 and 2015, a key growth period for the field. By examining in detail a population of 441 articles published in 22 key journals, we demonstrate that comparative journalism studies is a dynamic field that has developed considerable structure over time, and outline some key patterns, such as a continuing focus on Western authorship, the study of Western countries and elite media, quantitative methods of analysis and political aspects of journalism.

Abstract:Based on the bibliographical statistics of 224 original papers and proceedings papers from SSCI、AHCI and CPCI-SSH,the paper concludes that there are five distinguished features of new media researches in communication studies during the last 20 years:there are more papers published in communication studies;the year of 1997 is a turning point;USA and European countries are the research centre,while China goes ahead in Asia;the leading journals are coming into being,but the core institutions and authors are still unclear;and finally,the use of internet is the main part of new media studies by far now.

Abstract:Based on the journal co-citation analysis,this exploratory research aims at figuring out the network of Chinese journals in the field of journalism & communication.By statistical analysis,we find:(1)The journals are divided into two main branches:journals of journalism & communication and journals of editing & publishing.(2)Within journals of journalism & communication,except TV Research and China Radio & TV Academic Journal,there are mainly two sub-groups: research-oriented journals and industry-oriented journals.(3)Within journals of editing & publishing,except Reading and China Book Review,the others are classified into three sub-groups: journals of scientific editing & publishing,journals focusing on publishing,and journals focusing on editing.
