Abstract:East China Power Grid has the largest installed generation capacity among the regional power grids in China. Most of the installed generation capacities are in thermal power. With the building of very large hydro power plants in West China, an UHVDC system interconnecting with the area grids between East and West China is under construction and will be in operation in 2012. This UHVDC link with a 6.4 GW rated capacity will transmit the power generated from large hydro power plants to East China Grid over a long distance about 2000 km. With reference to the reliability issue for such an UHVDC connection with East China Grid, this paper proposes a reliability evaluation method and procedure for the large scale generation and transmission system with an UHVDC interconnection based on Monte Carlo simulation. The key techniques for implementation of reliability evaluation are introduced: 1) For the system state correction step in the procedure of reliability evaluation, sensitivity analysis method is hard to ensure the optimality of the state correction scheme. Although linear programming method is more rigorous, the scale of the problem is very large for a large scale composite generation and transmission system like the East China Grid. A new linear programming model is built to reduce the scale of the problem. The results of sensitivity analysis are utilized in this new model. 2) To accelerate the convergence speed of Monte Carlo Simulation, an importance sampling technique is designed. Different from commonly used importance sampling method, the multipliers are set as different values for different kind of components in the system according to their contributions to failure events. 3) East China Power Grid is a multi-infeed AC/DC power system. In order to highlight impact of the new UHVDC connection on power supply reliability of East China Power grid, the reliability indices of the existing HVDC systems are not evaluated in this paper, instead, they are considered as multi-state power sources to the East China Power Grid. The state table of the UHVDC system is specially built. 4) DC power flow is calculated in the procedure of reliability evaluation. But for large scale power systems, the active power loss may be larger than the capacity of several generating units. Neglecting loss will lead to some error to the results of reliability evaluation. A method is proposed to consider power loss in calculating DC power flows. A computation program is developed using C++ language. The case studies have been carried out on the planned 2012 East China power system with the UHVDC system connected. The objective of the reliability assessment has been focused on the system operation condition of the expected summer peak-load operation mode of East China Power Grid in 2012. Study results show the effectiveness of the proposed techniques. Moreover, sensitivity analyses are also carried out.
