Abstract:The joint between C/C composites and liquid silicon infiltrated-C/SiC composites was achieved using a Si10Zr (at. %) eutectic filler. The microstructure and mechanical properties of joints at different brazing temperature and holding time were characterized. The results showed that the melting filler infiltrated along the carbon fiber bundle gaps and formed SiC reaction layers at both interfaces. On the side of C/SiC composites, the residual silicon in the original base material dissolved into the molten Si10Zr alloy during the brazing procedure. The phenomenon resulted in intense infiltration of the liquid filler into C/SiC composites, which formed a unique C/SiC-Si-ZrSi2 multiphase-ceramic gradient structure. Excessive filler was squeezed out around the joint seam to form a fillet. The shear strength of the joint reached up to 37 MPa, with fracture occurrence in both substrates and the joint seam. Reliable bonding between C/C and C/SiC dissimilar composites was finally achieved.

Abstract:The wetting and brazing of Cf/C composites with a Si–10Zr eutectic alloy was investigated for the first time. Wetting of the Si–Zr alloy on the Cf/C substrate was studied by applying in-situ variations in contact angle of the droplet placed on the Cf/C substrate with temperature and time. The microstructure and the interfacial structure between the filler and the substrate, and the mechanical properties of the joints were determined using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. The Si–Zr alloy has an equilibrium contact angle of approximately 22° on the Cf/C substrate at 1460 °C, indicating excellent wettability. The liquid Si–Zr alloy can react with the Cf/C substrate by forming nano-SiC and coarse-SiC layers, and promote the wetting behaviour and bonding performance. In addition, the liquid Si–Zr alloy can also infiltrate into the Cf/C substrate along the carbon fibres, causing localised siliconisation and strengthening of the joint. An optimal shear strength of 32 MPa was achieved for the joint at a brazing temperature of 1460 °C for 10 min.

Abstract:In the present work, the microstructures and mechanical properties of Cu-foam-(graphene, LiAlSiO4 and graphene/LiAlSiO4) and a CoCrNiFeCuSn high-entropy alloy as a composite interlayer for brazing Zr and silicon carbide (SiC) ceramics are explored. Further, the effects of graphene, LiAlSiO4, and graphene/LiAlSiO4 on the mechanical properties and microstructure of the SiC/Zr joint are investigated. The results of the data analysis reveal a good connection between SiC and Zr at 1040 °C for 20 min using the different composite interlayers, Cu-foam-graphene, Cu-foam-LiAlSiO4, or Cu-foam-graphene-LiAlSiO4, with shear strengths of 122, 147, and 235 MPa, respectively. Particularly, the Cu-foam-graphene-LiAlSiO4 brazed joint demonstrates the highest shear strength. Furthermore, the dispersion of LiAlSiO4 in the joint reduces the coefficients of thermal expansion of difference between the brazing materials and ceramics, as well as the residual stress in the joint. Moreover, the synergistic effect of the solid-solution phase, Zr(s, s), with excellent plastic deformation, and enhanced Zr(Cr, Fe)2 phase further improves the strength and plasticity of the joint.

Abstract:A Si-Zr eutectic alloy was employed as a high-temperature braze filler to join SiCf/SiC composites with Cf/C composites. The interfacial microstructure and bonding mechanism on the side of the SiCf/SiC composites were studied for the first time. The results showed that SiC reaction layers formed between the Si-Zr filler and both substrates. The SiC layer resulted from the chemical reaction between Si and C at the filler–Cf/C interface. In contrast, at the filler–SiCf/SiC interface, coarse-SiC crystals only precipitated on the SiC fibre bundles, and there was only non-reactive bonding between the filler and the SiC matrix. In addition, the reactive infiltration process between the liquid Si alloy and the porous substrates contributed to the formation of infiltration structures, including Cf/C–SiC and SiCf/SiC–Si-ZrSi2, resulting in the reinforcement of the substrates and the joint. Finally, a favourable shear strength of 38 MPa was achieved.

Abstract:TiAl alloy and C/SiC composites were vacuum brazed with AgCu foils.The formation and evolution of interfacial structure and its effects on shear strength of the joints were studied in this paper.The results showed that the dissolution of TiAl substrate had a strongly effect on interfacial structure.When the brazing temperature was 900 ℃ for 10 min,AlCu2Ti blocks accompanied with a small number of AlCuTi and AlCu4 phases were observed at TiAl side.There were a lot of AgCu eutectic and silver-rich areas close to the composites and TiC reaction layer was formed between C/SiC composite and AgCu eutectic or silver-rich area.Due to the reinforcing effect of the massive AlCu2Ti phases which dispersed in the whole interlayer,the joint shear strength reached 74 MPa when brazing temperature was 900 ℃ for 25 min.

Abstract:The brazing of C/C and C f /SiC composites was achieved using Si–14Ti eutectic filler. The wetting behavior of the Si–Ti filler on the composites, as well as the microstructure and performance of the joints at different brazing temperatures, were characterized. The results showed that the contact angle of Si–Ti eutectic filler on precursor infiltration and pyrolysis (PIP)-C f /SiC composite surface is only 60°, while it exhibits good spreading effect on liquid silicon infiltration (LSI)-C f /SiC and C/C composite surfaces. Although Si–Ti filler and carbon fiber reinforced composites (C/C, PIP-C f /SiC and LSI-C f /SiC) react to form SiC, the joint shows different mechanical performance. The liquid filler infiltrates into the gaps between fiber bundles and reacts with C/C to form a SiC reaction layer at the interface. However, the presence of numerous defects at the brazed joint between Si–Ti filler and PIP-C f /SiC results in the shear strength of only 28 MPa for the C/C-PIP-C f /SiC joint. While for the C/C-LSI-C f /SiC joint, due to the residual Si in the LSI-C f /SiC composites, the liquid filler infiltrates intensely into LSI-C f /SiC to form a unique C f /SiC–Si–TiSi 2 compound infiltration layer. The shear strength of C/C-LSI-C f /SiC joints reaches 47 MPa, with fracture occurring in both substrates and brazed seam. The present study offers theoretical support for the investigation of Si-based fillers in brazing carbon fiber reinforced ceramic matrix composites.

Abstract:The ZrB2-SiC ceramic matrix composites were joined by vacuum brazing with BNi2 filler metal. SEM, EDS and XRD were used to analyze the interface microstructure and properties. The optimized brazing parameters were 1160��C of brazing temperature and 20 min of holding time. The experimental results show that the interface products were mainly ��-Ni2Si, ��1-Ni3Si, ZrB2+C, Ni(s, s) and CrxByCz phases. With the increase of brazing temperature and holding time, the shear strength of the joint increased first and then decreased. The maximum shear strength of the joint brazed at 1200��C for 20 min reached 121 MPa. The effect of brazing temperature and holding time on the joint fracture mechanism was similar. When the holding time was short, cracks mainly occurred at Ni(s, s) in the seam, and then propagated to the Ni diffusion layer. When the holding time was suitable, the fracture mainly occurred in the Ni diffusion layer. When the holding time increased further, cracks mainly initiated in the Ni(s, s) with some ��1-Ni3Si and later developed to the Ni diffusion layer.

Abstract:ZrB2–SiC ceramic composite was brazed by using TiZrNiCu active filler metal. The microstructure and interfacial phenomena of the joints were analysed by means of SEM, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The joining effect was evaluated by shear strength. The results showed that the reaction products of the ZrB2–SiC ceramic composite joint were TiC, ZrC, Ti5Si3, Zr2Si, Zr(s,s) and (Ti, Zr)2 (Ni, Cu), and the microstructure was separately ZrB2–SiC/Zr(s,s)/Ti5Si3+Zr2Si+TiC+ZrC+(Ti,Zr)2(Ni,Cu)/Zr(s,s)/ZrB2–SiC. A conceptual interface evolution model was established to explain the interface evolution mechanism. The maximum shear strength of the brazed joints was 143·5 MPa at the brazing temperature T of 920°C and the holding time t of 10 min.

Abstract:The wetting and joining of SiCf/SiC composites and C/C composites with a high-temperature Si-14Ti (at. %) braze filler were studied for the first time. Wetting dynamics and the contact angle were investigated by heating the Si-Ti sessile droplets on the SiCf/SiC and the C/C substrates. The interfacial micromorphology, shear strength, and fracture characteristics of the joints were all analysed. The Si-Ti alloy had contact angles of similar to 23. on the C/C and similar to 7. on the SiCf/SiC at 1460 degrees C, demonstrating excellent wettability on both substrates. SiC reaction layers were formed at both interfaces of the joint. The reactive infiltration into both substrates occurred during the brazing process, especially in the SiCf/SiC composites. The infiltration structures and the robust bonding were conducive to strengthening the brazed joint. The joint exhibited optimal shear strength values of 31 MPa at room temperature and 40 MPa at a high temperature of 1000 degrees C.

Abstract:Vacuum brazing of SiC ceramic was conducted using Ti-Zr-Ni-Cu solder. The interface microstructure and its formation mechanism was investigated. Scanning electron microscope (SEM) was used to observe the joint microstructure and conduct local energy spectrum analysis. The results show that the products in the joint interface were mainly TiC, Ti5Si3, Zr2Si, Zr(s, s), Ti(s, s)+Ti2(Cu, Ni) and (Ti, Zr)(Ni, Cu) phases. The microstructure of the joint interface could be expressed as SiC/TiC/Ti5Si3+Zr2Si/Zr(s, s)/Ti(s, s)+Ti2(Cu, Ni)/(Ti, Zr)(Ni, Cu). The brazing process could be divided into five stages: physical contact between the solder and substrate, melting of solder and formation of reaction layer on the ceramic side, continuous diffusion of melted solder into the substrate, thickness increasing of reaction layer, composition homogenization, ending of reaction on ceramic side and formation of hypereutectic structure, solidification of intermetallic compounds in the center of joint. The shear strength of the joint brazed at 960��C for 10min reached 110 MPa.

Abstract:Microstructural evolution and shear strength of vacuum brazed TiAl alloys to C/SiC composites using Ag–Cu filler metal were investigated. The dissolution of active elements Ti and Al from TiAl substrate has a strong influence on the microstructure and shear strength of the joint. Ag is the less active element of the filler and Cu has strong tendency to the formation of AlCu2Ti phase with the dissolved Ti and Al. Ag–Cu eutectic is gradually taken place by AlCu2Ti blocks and Ag-based solid solution with the increase of brazing temperature or time. The TiC reaction layer including a small amount of Ti5Si3 phase is formed adjacent to C/SiC composites when active element Ti diffused into C/SiC composite and chemical reaction occurred in the composite interface. The shear strength of the joint depends heavily on the thickness of the TiC reaction layer. The maximum shear strength achieved 85MPa for the joint vacuum brazed at 900°C for 10min. Cracks primarily propagate along Ag-rich phase and TiC layer. The TiC layer with the thickness of 4–5μm is formed at the boundary of SiC matrix.

Abstract:In the present study, vacuum brazing was adopted to join carbon fiber reinforced silicon carbide (C/SiC) composite and Nb using Ti-Ni composite foils. The interfacial microstructure as well as mechanical properties was investigated, and the contact-reaction mechanism was analyzed. The results show that, (Ti, Nb)C reaction layer, (Ti, Nb)(2)Ni and Ti-Ni-Nb-Si compounds, and TiNi-(Nb, Ti) eutectic form in braze seam. Ti-Ni composite foils turn into liquid eutectic alloy by two stages. Firstly, Ti and Ni foils react to fabricate TiNi alloy. Secondly, the pseudo-binary eutectic reaction of TiNi and Nb substrate begins to form the liquid eutectic alloy. The maximum shear strengths of the brazed joints reach 192 MPa, 155 MPa, 115 MPa and 82 MPa at room temperature, 600 degrees C, 800 MPa and 1000 degrees C, respectively. To enhance the mechanical properties of the joints, laser drilling holes on C/SiC composite prior to brazing was proposed. Because the infiltration of filler alloy into holes can increase the load bearing capacity and decrease the residual stress of the joint, the shear strengths of laser-drilled joints are significantly improved to 259 MPa, 186 MPa, 161 MPa and 122 MPa at room temperature, 600 degrees C, 800 degrees C and 1000 degrees C, respectively. Abstract:SiC ceramic was brazed in vacuum with Ti-35Zr-35Ni-15Cu(mass fraction/%)filler metal.The formation of interfacial structure and effects of technological parameters on joint shear strength were studied.The results show that a series of interface products form owing to the complex interface reactions between the SiC ceramic and filler metal.When the brazing temperature is 960℃for 10 min,TiC and Ti5Si3+Zr2Si layers form on the SiC ceramic side.Ti5Si3+Zr2Si grows towards to the middle of the joint and shows a long strip shape.Microstructure from SiC ceramic to the middle of the joint can be indicated as SiC/TiC/Ti5Si3+Zr2Si/Zr(s,s)/Ti(s,s)+Ti2(Cu,Ni)/(Ti,Zr)(Ni,Cu).When the brazing temperature is 960℃ for 30 min,long strip shape Ti5Si3+Zr2Si runs through the entire joint.Shear strength of the brazed joint firstly increases then decreases with the rising of the brazing temperature and holding time.The maximum shear strength of the joint with 110 MPa is obtained at brazing temperature 960℃for 10 min.

Abstract:Ajoint of ZrB2-SiC ceramic to Ti6Al4Valloy was achieved successfully by contact reactive brazing with Ti/Cu lamination. The microstructure and chemical composition of joining interfaces were investigated by electron backscattered diffraction, energy dispersive spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction. The results revealed that ZrB2 had much faster decomposing velocity than SiC in Ti-Cu liquid alloy. Two types of distribution of TiB whiskers were produced on ceramic surface due to different growing conditions. The microstructural evolution with different brazing temperatures was analyzed. The mechanical properties of the joints were evaluated by microhardness and shear tests. The maximum shear strength reached 90.7MPa with brazing temperature at 920 degrees C for 10 min.

Abstract:ZrC-SiC ceramic and TC4 alloy were successfully brazed using a self-prepared Ti-15Cu-15Ni filler. The microstructure and mechanical property of the joints obtained at different brazing temperatures were investigated. The results indicated that Ti from the Ti-15Cu-15Ni and the TC4 reacted with the ZrC-SiC to form TiC phase adjacent to the ZrC-SiC ceramic. In the brazing seam, Ti2(Ni, Cu) intermetallic compounds zone (IMCs Zone), Hypoeutectic Zone and Hypereutectoid Zone formed. The brazing temperature affected the dissolution of TC4 into the braze filler significantly, and then determined the microstructure of the joint. The formation of α-Ti in the brazing seam could decrease the hardness and the brittleness of the brazing seam, which was beneficial to the property of the brazed joint. The joint strength reached a maximum value of 43MPa when the joint was brazed at 970°C and cracks propagated in the ZrC-SiC substrate near the brazing seam.

Abstract:Metallic glasses are excellent filler materials for joints and heterostructures. However, limited attempts have been made to explore the origin of interactions between metallic glasses and other materials in depth. This study revealed the main interaction process of amorphous Ti-Zr-Cu-Ni/crystalline Ti in the heating process and formation origin of interface phases in the C-f/SiC and Nb joints brazed by amorphous Ti-Zr-Cu-Ni/crystalline Ti composite filler. Ti metal had limited dissolution in the liquid of amorphous alloys far below the equilibrium temperature, and then directly experienced an isothermal solidification. In the brazing process, the growth of the TiC layer on the C-f/SiC side and beta-(Ti,Nb) layer on the Nb side was controlled by the diffusion of C atoms and dissolution of Nb parent material, respectively. The joint of C-f/SiC and Nb possessed a high shear strength of 121 MPa at 1000 degrees C for 15min.

Abstract:ZrC-SiC ceramic and TC4 alloy were brazed using AgCuTi alloy. The microstructure and mechanical property of the joints obtained at different brazing parameters were investigated and the reaction mechanism was analyzed. The results indicated that the Ti from the AgCuTi and TC4 reacted with the ZrC in the ceramic to form different shaped TiC crystals adjacent to the ZrC-SiC ceramic. With the increase of brazing temperature or extending of holding time, the dissolution of TC4 became vigorous and much Ti dissolved into the braze alloy. As a result, Ti reacted with the Cu from AgCuTi alloy to form a series of Cu-Ti compounds in the brazing seam due to the strong affinity between Cu and Ti. The Cu-Ti compounds made the hardness and brittleness of brazing seam increase, which deteriorated the property of the brazed joint. The maximum shear strength was 39MPa obtained at 810°C for 5min.

Abstract:In this paper, brazing behaviors between ZrB2-SiC and Ti-6Al-4V by Cu foam interlayer were studied. The microstructure, formation mechanism, mechanical property and fracture surface of the joints were systematically studied. The results showed that the phases in the joints were alpha + beta-Ti, TiCu, Ti2Cu, Cu(s, s), TiC, TiB2 and Ti3SiC2. An optimum shear strength reached up to 435 MPa at a brazing temperature of 910 degrees C and holding time of 20 min. Such a shear strength was 90 MPa higher than the one without the Cu foam. The obtained high shear strength of joint was discussed from microstructure and residual stress. With the increase of brazing time, Cu(s,s) gradually disappeared and the content of Ti2Cu intermetallic compound increased, which was harmful for the joint. Furthermore, the residual stress of joint with Cu foam was calculated to be 324 MPa, lower than the one without Cu foam interlayer.
