Abstract:China possesses the largest magnesite resources globally. The increasing accumulation of low-grade magnesite (LGM) from magnesium product processing has led to significant resource wastage and environmental pollution. Converting LGM into anhydrous MgCO 3 (MC) presents a promising approach to enhancing its economic value. This study proposed a novel technique for the salicylic acid (SA)-induced single-step conversion of LGM into MC, allowing efficient utilization of LGM and CO 2 abatement. The effects of reaction temperature and time, the addition of SA and water, on the phase composition and morphology of the products, was investigated, and the phase transition and morphology regulation mechanisms of MC were elucidated. The process involves two stages. Surrounding Mg 2+ control based on chelating systems, followed by phenol-induced MC mineralization. This study showed that SA 2− and Mg 2+ formed bidentate chelate structures via O-Mg bonds, limiting the Mg 2+ hydration. Phenol adsorbed on the MC (104) surface via O-Mg and hydrogen bonds, inducing symmetric growth and hierarchical structure formation. Furthermore, the system is technically feasible since the regenerated phenol leachate can be reused for MC synthesis and carbonation. This method is anticipated to become an essential green technology for reducing CO 2 emissions and synthesizing MC, aligning with global industrial requirements.
