Abstract:We demonstrate dispersive optical phased arrays based on the Si3N4-on-Si platform. Two-dimensional beam steering across a 45.6 °× 10 °FOV with a beam width of 1.45 °× 0.032 °is achieved by wavelength tuning alone. Besides, FMCW ranging operation at a target distance of 10 m are experimentally performed.

Abstract:A novel high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) technique for atmospheric aerosol remote sensing,which uses multi-longitudinal-mode laser as the transmitting light source,is proposed.A field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is used as the spectral discriminator,and the periodic frequency discrimination characteristic in the process of FWMI designing should match with the mode interval of multi-longitudinal-mode laser to ensure consistent fine spectral discrimination for the return signal from each longitudinal mode laser.The principle and the realization way of the proposed multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are illustrated in detail and the main factors which constrain the frequency discrimination characteristic of the FWMI in multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL are discussed quantitatively.The performance of the proposed technique is verified further at the wavelength of 1064 nm by computer simulation.The multi-longitudinal-mode HSRL technique can avoid the dependence of the current HSRLs on the single multi-longitudinal-mode lasers remarkably.The proposed technique can not only decrease the cost,volume and weight of the laser in HSRL,but also improve its stability notably,which is of great significance for airborne and satellite-borne HSRL development in our country.
Polarized High-Spectral-Resolution Lidar Based on Field-Widened Michelson Interferometer

Abstract:A polarized high-spectral-resolution lidar (HSRL) based on a field-widened Michelson interferometer (FWMI) is developed in Zhejiang University, China, which is intended to profile various atmospheric aerosol optical properties simultaneously, such as the backscatter coefficient, the extinction coefficient, depolarization ratio, lidar ratio, etc. Due to the enlarged field-of-view (FOV) of the FWMI spectroscopic filter compared with the conventional Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) filter, we can expand the angular acceptable angle of the HSRL system to about 1 degree yet without any degradation of the spectral discrimination, enhancing the photon efficiency considerably. In this paper, we describe the developed FWMI-based polarized HSRL system comprehensively. The instrument configuration parameters and overall systematic structure are first presented. Then the FWMI subsystem, as the core apparatus of this HSRL, is particularly focused on. Instrumental calibration approach and the data retrieval are also discussed in detail. To our knowledge, this HSRL system is the first new generation of lidar which employs the FWMI spectroscopic filter in China, and great potential will be shown with the gradually improved engineering design in near future.

Abstract:We demonstrate a fully solid-state beam scanner that incorporates a Si3N4 photonic integrated switch array, a collimator lens, and a lithographically patterned diffraction grating. The off-chip components enable nearly circular output beams under the reduced system complexity. By manipulating the optical switch array and tuning the input wavelength, two-dimensional beam steering with $32\times23$ = 736 resolvable spots across a $14.3^{\circ }\times 9.9^{\circ }$ field of view (FOV) is realized. Furthermore, the coherent ranging within 18 m is demonstrated experimentally by utilizing the triangular frequency modulation. The tested results validate the feasibility of the proposed beam scanner, which might offer a flexible, scalable, and easily-implemented solution for the solid-state frequency modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) LiDAR.

Abstract:We report a long-distance detection experiment based on our proposed ultra-narrow linewidth frequency-modulated continuous wave laser. The laser is a hybrid integrated laser working under self-injection locked state by coupling semiconductor laser to an external high-Q cavity. The laser operates at 1 kHz chirped frequency with 6.6 GHz modulated frequency range. The intrinsic linewidth is less than 20 Hz and the modulated linearity 1 - r(2) is optimized to 10(-6). In the 2.2 km ranging experiment, we get the signal-to-noise ratio of the detected signal higher than 5 dB with a amplified output power of 100 mW and expanded beam diameter of 15 mm. The mean value of the demodulated distance is 2209 m, and the standard deviation is 0.67 m. This is the first demonstration of the application of hybrid integrated lasers for long-range detection, verifying the application of narrow linewidth FMCW laser in LiDAR is system.

Abstract:This article presents a pulsed-coherent lidar that uses a 19-GHz pulse-modulated optical carrier and segmented time-of-flight (ToF) detection. The receiver analog frontend (AFE) employs a down-conversion chain that consists of a phase-invariant programmable-gain low-noise amplifier (PI-PGLNA), a sub-harmonic mixer (SHM), and an inverter-based phase-invariant programmable-gain amplifier (PI-PGA). The local oscillator (LO) is generated from a phase-locked loop (PLL) with a ring-type voltage-controlled oscillator (VCO). An analog-to-digital converter (ADC) subsamples the down-converted signal, and a digital signal processor (DSP) calculates the coarse, intermediate, and fine ToF. At the receiver input, a narrowband matching is implemented between the p-i-n photodiode and the PI-PGLNA with direct wire bonding. The system achieves 6- precision with a 5-MSa/s sampling rate at a 2.5-m distance. The 2-D scanning is achieved with this lidar with the use of an MEMS mirror.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (lidar) has long been used in various applications. Solid-state beam steering mechanisms are needed for robust lidar systems. Here we propose and demonstrate a lidar scheme called "Swept Source Lidar" that allows us to perform frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) ranging and nonmechanical beam steering simultaneously. Wavelength dispersive elements provide angular beam steering, while a laser frequency is continuously swept by a wideband swept source over its whole tuning bandwidth. Employing a tunable vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser and a 1-axis mechanical beam scanner, three-dimensional point cloud data has been obtained. Swept Source Lidar systems can be flexibly combined with various beam steering elements to realize full solid-state FMCW lidar systems.

Abstract:The beam scanner is a predominant part in the light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system to achieve three-dimensional (3D) imaging. The solid-state beam-steering device has emerged as a promising candidate technology for a beam scanner with the advantages of robustness, stability, and high scanning speed. Here we propose a frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) LiDAR system with an in-fiber solid-state beam scanner. A 45 degrees tilted fiber grating (TFG) is first employed to achieve in-fiber solid-state spectral scanning in the LiDAR system. A maximum output efficiency of 93.7% is achieved with proper polarization control. A single-mode fiber is then used to fabricate a 2-cm 45 degrees TFG, which significantly reduces the size and the cost of the beam scanner in the LiDAR system. We experimentally realize 3D imaging of targets placed at a distance of 1.2 m based on our proposed LiDAR system. Abstract:We fabricated a frequency-modulated continuous-wave light detection and ranging (FMCW LiDAR) chip that integrates a slow-light grating (SLG) beam scanner and an optical interferometer for k-clock generation using silicon photonics. Beam scanning and FMCW light generation were performed simultaneously through a wavelength sweep, while the sweep nonlinearity was compensated by resampling the ranging signal using the k-clock. The interferometer incorporated a 24-cm-long Si waveguide delay line, facilitating ranging up to 7.1 m and the capture of point cloud images. The possibility of ranging longer distances by lengthening the waveguide and increasing the interpolation is discussed.

Abstract:Narrow linewidth and fast-chirped frequency are essential in frequency-modulated continuous-wave lasers. We introduce a laser that meets these requirements by coupling a distributed feedback laser with an external high-Q microring resonator, where a bulky stacked piezoelectric chip is attached to the resonator for fast tuning. The laser demonstrates an ultranarrow intrinsic linewidth of 22 Hz in the self-injection-locked state. Actuated by the bulky piezoelectric chip, the maximum triangular actuation bandwidth can reach 100 kHz. The driving voltage is filtered to avoid a resonant mechanical mode, obtaining the minimum residual linearity error at 10 kHz with a 4.2 GHz tuning range. A light detection and ranging system was set up for a proof-of-concept experiment, demonstrating a high detection precision with standard deviations of 2.7 and 4.0 cm for targets at 15 and 30 m, respectively.

Abstract:Frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) light detection and ranging (lidar) is a promising solution for three-dimensional (3D) imaging and autonomous driving. This technique maps range and velocity measurement to frequency counting via coherent detection. Compared with single-channel FMCW lidar, multi-channel FMCW lidar can greatly improve the measurement rate. A chip-scale soliton micro-comb is currently used in FMCW lidar to enable multi-channel parallel ranging and significantly increase the measurement rate. However, its range resolution is limited due to the soliton comb having only a few-GHz frequency sweep bandwidth. To overcome this limitation, we propose using a cascaded modulator electro-optic (EO) frequency comb for massively parallel FMCW lidar. We demonstrate a 31-channel FMCW lidar with a bulk EO frequency comb and a 19-channel FMCW lidar using an integrated thin-film lithium niobate (TFLN) EO frequency comb. Both systems have a sweep bandwidth of up to 15 GHz for each channel, corresponding to a 1-cm range resolution. We also analyze the limiting factors of the sweep bandwidth in 3D imaging and perform 3D imaging for a specific target. The measurement rate achieved is over 12 megapixels per second, which verifies its feasibility for massively parallel ranging. Our approach has the potential to greatly benefit 3D imaging in fields where high range resolution is required, such as in criminal investigation and precision machining.

Abstract:Light detection and ranging (lidar) is widely accepted as an indispensable sensor for autonomous vehicles. There are two fundamental challenges in a lidar system: optical beam steering technique and ranging method. Optical phased array (OPA) is considered as one of the most promising beam steering schemes due to its solid state, compact size, and high reliability. As for ranging method, time-of-flight and frequency-modulate continuous-wave (FMCW) are commonly utilized in numerous research. However, they are impractical to commercial OPA lidar due to either requiring excessive optical power or the poor stability, high complexity, and high insertion loss of the FMCW source. As a result, the development of OPA lidars is significantly hindered by the lack of a feasible ranging method. In this paper, we present a phase-modulated continuous-wave (PhMCW) ranging method with excellent ranging accuracy and precision. Ranging error as low as 0.1 cm and precision on the order of 3.5 cm are achieved. In addition, theoretical and experimental study on simultaneous velocity measurement is carried out and velocity error as low as 0.15 cm/s is obtained. Finally, we develop a proof-of-concept OPA-PhMCW lidar and obtain a point cloud with excellent fidelity. Our work paves a novel approach to solid-state, cost-effective and high-performance OPA lidars.

Abstract:We present the demonstration of an integrated Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) coherent solid-state LIDAR (Light detection and ranging) on a silicon platform. The grating coupler array, the multimode interferometer (MMI) and the balanced detector array are implemented on one chip. The silicon-based grating coupler array receives the signal light and couples it into the silicon-based waveguide. Then the signal light is coherently beaten against the local light in the MMI, whose two outputs with 180° phase difference are detected by the balanced germanium (Ge) photodetector array. An external readout circuit composed of transimpedance amplifiers (TIAs) and bandpass filters is used to convert the photocurrent to voltage, from which the measured distance can be obtained through fast Fourier transform (FFT) and spectrum analysis. Here, on-chip space distance measurement was performed within the eye-safe 1550 nm band. Our prototype, fabricated entirely in a 300 mm wafer facility, has the advantages of low-cost, high integration and performance, which may enable extensive application of LIDARs in consumer products, such as selfdriving cars, drones, and robots.

Abstract:Frequency modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser measurement technology is widely used in industrial equipment calibration because it can realize high precision distance and speed synchronous measurement. However, the high-speed motion of the target will produce the phenomenon of frequency spectrum information velocity and distance coupling, which will lead to spectrum broadening and signal center frequency ambiguity. This seriously restricts the application scenarios of FMCW lidar. We propose a common-path interferometric FMCW lidar system that can be referenced to the optical frequency comb (OFC) and demonstrate its application in coherent laser velocity and distance simultaneous measurement. We take the interference peak generated by the OFC and the FMCW laser as the reference and reshape the whole measurement process to form multiple sub-measurement intervals to suppress the spectrum broadening caused by the coupling of speed and distance. Compared with the existing FMCW lidar system, this method can effectively reduce the error caused by frequency modulation (FM) commutation and significantly improve the measurement resolution. The common-path interferometric structure we designed simplifies the complexity of the optical path system and improves the measurement efficiency. The experiment results show that the proposed FMCW lidar system has an error of less than 286 μm/s and a standard deviation of less than 60 μm/s for the 200 mm/s target, which has accurate and efficient measurement capability and broad application prospect in the industrial field.

Abstract:As the increasing demands of the environmental protection, meteorological monitoring, ecological detection and other fields, lidars are needed to simultaneously measure a variety of atmospheric parameters (especially simultaneous measurement of various pollutants, such as volatile organic solvent VOCs). Multi-wavelength Raman lidar, differential absorption lidar (DIAL) and high spectrum resolution lidar (HSRL) can be implemented these fields. But either technique needs multiple laser sources to meet their requirements. This paper proposes a new lidar based on Frequency Comb Light Source, which can provide multiple frequency components through a single light source for simultaneously measuring various multiple atmospheric parameters. The frequency comb laser light source is used to emit seed light of frequency ωc from the seed laser, and then after passing through the frequency comb laser, a series of equally spaced spectral frequency components are emitted centered on c; then emitted into the atmosphere, and the laser reacts with the atmosphere. The echo signal enters the receiving optical path through the telescope, and is sent through the beam splitter or the discriminator to detect by the detector. Based on different pollutants have different absorption cross sections, similar differential absorption lidar(DIAL), the on and off can be determined. The lidar using the frequency comb light source can be easy designed into a compact structure, which is convenient to carry and maintain. It’s also a very advantageous for the lidar miniaturization and industrialization with a wide application prospect.

Abstract:We present the first integrated coherent LiDAR system with experimental ranging demonstrations operating within the eye-safe 1550nm band. Leveraging a unique wafer-scale 3D integration platform which includes customizable silicon photonics and nanoscale CMOS, our system seamlessly combines a high-sensitivity optical coherent detection front-end, a large-scale optical phased array for beamforming, and CMOS electronics in a single chip. Our prototype, fabricated entirely in a 300mm wafer facility, shows that low-cost manufacturing of high-performing solid-state LiDAR is indeed possible, which in turn may enable extensive adoption of LiDARs in consumer products, such as self-driving cars, drones, and robots.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a novel light detection and ranging (LiDAR) system for 3-D imaging, combined with laser feedback interferometry (LFI) and frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW). Compared with the conventional FMCW method, the intracavity interference between the echo signal and local oscillator enhances the amplitude of the generated beat signal effectively, which improves the sensitivity in weak-signal detection with low photon consumption. The improvement is still effective even with frequency modulation nonlinearity. Besides, the system inherits the advantages of FMCW, possessing the capacity to measure position and velocity simultaneously. In experiments, the validity of distance and velocity measurement is demonstrated, and 3-D imaging is realized by employing a pair of beam scanners. With a less than $200 \mu \text{W}$ probe beam, the system achieves imaging over 65 m away in various scenes with good fidelity, and the distance resolution is better than 1 mm. A portable prototype is also designed and fabricated. Overall, the proposed system possesses high echo-signal sensitivity, simple structure, and dynamic information availability, which provides a new idea for FMCW-LiDAR optimization for practical applications.
Long distance high resolution FMCW laser ranging with phase noise compensation and 2D signal processing

Abstract:A long distance high resolution frequency-modulated continuous wave (FMCW) laser rangefinder with phase noise compensation and two-dimensional (2D) data processing skills is developed. Range-finding ladar consists of a continuously chirped laser source, an auxiliary reference interferometer, and a monostatic optical transceiver for target illumination and return photon collection. To extend the range unambiguity and lower the electronic processing bandwidth, a two-step laser frequency chirping scheme is adopted, where a long pulse width, small frequency bandwidth laser chirping signal are used in step 1 for coarse distance estimation, and a short pulse width and large frequency bandwidth laser chirping signal are applied afterwards for step 2 high resolution distance realization. An auxiliary reference interferometer is to record the phase noise originated from the laser source to compensate for phase errors induced in the target return photons. The 2D data processing skill helps to coherently sum up all the phase noise removed echo photons to achieve high resolution range peak extraction with high detection sensitivity. Experimental demonstration shows that the proposed FMCW ladar at 1550 nm wavelength with a laser chirping bandwidth of 10 GHz and electronic processing bandwidth of 200 MHz can measure a corner cube test target in an outdoor atmospheric environment, and the measurement results are 12013.905 m with a 2.4 cm range resolution under strong return photon levels and 12013.920 m with a 2.5 cm range resolution under weak return photon levels.

Abstract:Silicon photonics is considered as the ideal solution for chip-scale solid Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). In this paper, a coherent receiver chip, integrating beam splitters, 180-degree mixers, germanium-balanced photodetectors, and an on-chip temperature sensor is presented. Benefiting from the micron-scale silicon photonics platform, the propagation loss of the waveguide is 0.19 dB/cm, and the imbalance of 180-degree mixers is only 0.30 dB at 1550 nm. The 3 dB cut-off frequency of the balanced photodetector reaches 37.3 GHz, and the responsivity is 0.32A considering the coupling loss. An FMCW LiDAR system with the coherent receiver chip is built for ranging and velocity measurement. Ranging of distance at 120 m with the precision of 0.3 m is achieved.
