Abstract:In this work, large size SmCa 4 O(BO 3 ) 3 (SmCOB) and YCa 4 O(BO 3 ) 3 (YCOB) crystals with high-quality were grown by Czochralski technique along <;010> direction. The crystal growth habits, quality, piezoelectric coefficients and high-temperature resistivity of the as-grown crystals were studied. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the rocking curves of YCOB and SmCOB crystals from top to bottom were found to be in the range 20.4” to 21.0” and 20.5” to 21.3”, respectively. At room temperature, the piezoelectric coefficients d 11 , d22 and of (YXlw) -15°/45°-cut of SmCOB and YCOB crystals were determined to be 2.0 pC/N, 1.7 pC/N, 8.4 pC/N and 1.3 pC/N, 3.1 pC/N, 6.4 pC/N, respectively. The electric resistivity of SmCOB and YCOB crystals with X, Y and Z cuts were characterized from 660 °C up to 900 °C. At 900 °C, the resistivity of various kinds of cuts were found to be in the range from 9.80 × 10 6 Ω·cm to 1.09× 10 8 Ω·cm.

Abstract:Piezoelectric actuators play an important role in modern electronic devices. In this work, 0.7Bi(1−x)SmxFeO3–0.3BaTiO3 lead-free piezo-ceramics are fabricated through the rapid thermal quenching technique for enhancing the electric-field-induced strain response. All the ceramic samples own a typical perovskite structure, and the morphotropic phase boundary can be achieved after Sm substitution. Additionally, a high TC of 403 °C and excellent ferroelectricity can be obtained at room temperature for the x = 0.03 composition, together with a large peak-to-peak strain value (∆S = 0.5%). Furthermore, a larger strain value ∆S of 0.45% at 150 °C can also be realized in 0.7Bi0.95Sm0.05FeO3–0.3BaTiO3 ceramic. Our results could further stimulate the investigations on lead-free ceramics for piezoelectric actuator applications.

Abstract:Operation at temperatures well above ambient is desired for applications such as smart structures integrated within aircraft and space vehicles. Piezoelectric yttrium calcium oxyborate single crystal YCa4O(BO3)3 (YCOB) was found to exhibit no phase transition until its melting temperature around ∼1500°C. The temperature characteristics of the resonance frequency, electromechanical coupling, and dielectric permittivity were studied in the temperature range of 30–950°C for different orientations. The electrical resistivity at 800°C was found to be greater than 2×108Ωcm. Together with its temperature independent electromechanical coupling factor (∼12%) and engineered resonance frequency behavior, these make YCOB crystals excellent candidates for sensing applications at ultra high temperatures.

Abstract:Ca2Nb2O7 is a promising material for high-temperature piezoelectric applications due to its ultra-high Curie temperature, which makes it a suitable candidate for use in harsh environments. However, their piezoelectric performance needs improvement. Here, through chemical engineering methods, we have successfully grown Bi3+ doped Ca2Nb2O7 single crystals using the optical floating zone technique. The Ca1.94Bi0.06Nb2O7 single crystals achieved better high-temperature stability, transparency and a higher piezoelectric constant of 12.8 pC/N at 298 K and 20.0 pC/N at 660 K. In addition to the dopant effects, mechanisms for enhancing the piezoelectric properties of perovskite-like layer structure (PLS) materials have been identified, highlighting the significant contribution of the NbO6 octahedron and interlayer ions. These findings offers valuable insights into improving the performance of PLS materials, which is crucial for promoting their practical applications as high-temperature lead-free piezoelectric materials.

Abstract:Large size and high quality ReCa4O(BO3)(3) single crystals were grown by the Czochralski pulling method. In this work, the electrical properties were investigated at room temperature and elevated temperature for YCa4O(BO3)(3) (YCOB). The dielectric permittivity, piezoelectric strain coefficient and electromechanical coupling were found to be on the order of 11, 6pC/N and 12.5%, respectively, with a high piezoelectric voltage coefficient around 0.067Vm/N. The electrical resistivity of YCOB was found to be 2x10(8)Ohm.cm at 800 degrees C, with Q values of > 4,500 at 950 degrees C. The frequency / temperature coefficient of YCOB was found to be -75 similar to -85 ppm/K in the temperature range of 30-950 degrees C, depending on the crystal orientation. Together with its temperature independent properties, ReCOB crystals are promising candidates for sensing applications at elevated temperatures.

Abstract:High temperature piezoelectric crystals, YCa4O(BO3)3 (YCOB) possess relatively high piezoelectric activities (deff = ~7.8pC/N, keff= ~19%) and no phase transition prior to the melting point (~1500°C), indicating the potential use for high temperature sensing. In this work, growth of YCOB single crystals by using Czochralski (Cz) method was introduced and the temperature dependence of electro-elastic properties was investigated from 20 to 950°C, where the resonance frequencies relating to elastic compliances sE33 and sE55, were found to shift linearly with increasing temperature, with relatively large first order temperature coefficient being on the order of ~94ppm/°C. Of particular significance is that the lateral mode of (XY) and (XZ) crystal cuts were found not only possess relatively high electromechanical coupling factor (keff= ~15%) and piezoelectric coefficient (deff = ~4 pC/N), but also the temperature independence of electromechanical properties, demonstrating YCOB a good candidate for high temperature piezoelectric sensing.

Abstract:The piezoelectric single crystal yttrium calcium oxyborate, YCa4O(BO3)(3), was studied as a function of orientation and temperature. The resistivity of Y-cut samples was found to be 2.7 x 10(7) Omega cm at 950 degrees C, three orders of magnitude higher than langatate crystals. The electromechanical coupling k(26) and piezoelectric d(26) were found to be 22% and 10 pC/N at room temperature for (ZXw)-30 degrees-cut samples, respectively, maintaining similar values at elevated temperature of 950 degrees C, exhibiting temperature independent behavior. Furthermore, the highest temperature frequency coefficient was obtained in (ZXw)-33 degrees-cut samples, being -91 ppm/K. The temperature independent piezoelectric properties, together with the high resistivity and mechanical quality factor Q (similar to 2000 at 950 degrees C), suggest the YCOB crystal to be a good candidate for high temperature sensing applications. Abstract:Oxoborate crystal SmCa4O(BO3)3 (SmCOB) has been grown by the Czochralski (CZ) method for the first time. The X-ray powder diffraction (XRPD) of sintered material and single crystal were performed at room temperature. The DSC experiment showed that SmCOB melts congruently at 1397°C. The data of thermal expansion coefficients along X, Y and Z direction have been measured to be 1.03×10−5, 3.8×10−6 and 8.2×10−6K−1, respectively. The specific heat of the crystal as been measured to be 66cal/molK at 300K. The linear optical properties of SmCOB crystal are reported. The measured transmittance spectra from 400 to 2600nm showed that the crystal has strong absorption peaks which are anisotropic along different crystallophysic axes in the range of 900–1700nm.

Abstract:Piezoelectric single crystals of Ca3NbX3Si2O14 (CNXS, X=Ga and Al) with ordered langasite structure were successfully grown using the Czochralski technique. The structure was analyzed by X-ray powder diffraction, and the lattice parameters for CNAS were found to decrease slightly when compared to CNGS, due to the smaller ion radius of Al. The dielectric, piezoelectric and electromechanical properties were studied as function of temperature from 30 ∘C to 900 ∘C, showing a stable temperature-dependent behavior. Of particular significant is their high mechanical quality factor and electrical resistivity at elevated temperature, demonstrating CNXS crystals to be promising candidates for high-temperature applications.

Abstract:High Curie temperature (TC) xBi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3-(1-x)Pb(Zr1/2Ti1/2)O3 (xBNT-(1-x)PZT, BNT-PZT) piezoelectric ceramics were prepared by the conventional ceramic processing. The composition-induced morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) and its influences on structure and electrical performance were investigated. The synthesized BNT-PZT ceramics exhibit rather pure perovskite structure, and densified microstructure morphology with uniform elementals distribution in both grains and grain boundaries. With increasing the content of Bi(Ni1/2Ti1/2)O3 (BNT), crystal structure of the BNT-PZT ceramics transform from tetragonal phase to rhombohedral phase, and dielectric response peaks change from narrow shape to very broad shape but all presenting dielectric frequency dispersion. The diffused and relaxation dielectric behavior can be fitted well by the quadratic law, and the Vogel-Fulcher law fitting provides additional information on the relaxation characteristic. The MPB effects are confirmed further by ferroelectric and piezoelectric properties measurements. High-TC combined with excellent piezoelectric performance can be realized in the BNT-PZT system, which presents promising applications in geothermal exploration, aerospace and related elevated temperatures fields.

Abstract:High Temperature piezoelectric single crystals ReCa 4 O (BO 3) 3-ReCOB (Re: rare earth element, such as Gd and Y) are readily grown by the Czochralski method. The melting temperature of these crystals was found to be around 1500 C, before which, no phase transitions occur. The dielectric constant and dielectric loss values for GdCOB were studied as a function of temperature. Electromechanical coupling characteristics of the GdCOB crystal were investigated for temperatures up to 1000 C, showing coupling k eff up to 12% at room temperature with little change for temperatures up to 1000 C. High resistivities on the order of 10 8 Ω-cm at 700 C would contribute to low power requirements for electronics applications. Abstract:YCa4O(BO3)(3) (YCOB) and GdCa4O(BO3)(3) (GdCOB) crystals are promising piezoelectric materials for high-temperature sensing applications. The high-temperature condition is accompanied by hard irradiation, such as in a nuclear power plant. In this study, the electroelastic properties of YCOB and GdCOB crystals irradiated by different doses of 6 MeV Xe23+ (10(13), 10(15), and 10(16) ions/cm(2)) were studied in the temperature range of 25-850 degrees C. YCOB and GdCOB crystals exhibit good electrical resistivity stability with irradiation, where the resistivity of >10(8) Omega center dot cm is achieved @700 degrees C. Meanwhile, the electroelastic properties are found to maintain similar values, with variations being less than 8% after irradiation. The band gaps of the YCOB and GdCOB crystals are narrowed upon irradiation, leading to a slight decrease in electrical resistivity, while the slight increase in the dielectric permittivity after irradiation is associated with the irradiation-induced distortion of the structure and weakening of chemical bonding. All the irradiation resistant properties demonstrate that the bulk YCOB and GdCOB crystals are good candidates for use in high-temperature piezoelectric sensing under harsh environments including hard irradiation.

Abstract:Rare-earth calcium oxyborate crystals, ReCa4O(BO3)3 (ReCOB, Re = Er, Y, Gd, Sm, Nd, Pr, and La ), are potential piezoelectric materials for ultrahigh temperature sensor applications, due to their high electrical resistivity at elevated temperature, high piezoelectric sensitivity and temperature stability. In this paper, different techniques for ReCOB single-crystal growth are introduced, including the Bridgman and Czochralski pulling methods. Crystal orientations and the relationships between the crystallographic and physical axes of the monoclinic ReCOB crystals are discussed. The procedures for dielectric, elastic, electromechanical and piezoelectric property characterization, taking advantage of the impedance method, are presented. In addition, the maximum piezoelectric coefficients for different piezoelectric vibration modes are explored, and the optimized crystal cuts free of piezoelectric cross-talk are obtained by rotation calculations.

Abstract:4 in. Ca3Ta(Ga0.5Al0.5)3Si2O14 (CTGAS) in which 50% of Ga replaced by Al in Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS) crystal has been successfully grown by Czochralski technique. The full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of the rocking curves of five regions of CTGAS are found to be from 17.6″ to 18.2″. All the effective segregation coefficients Keff of chemical compositions are very close to 1. At room temperature, the piezoelectric coefficients d11 and d14 of CTGAS are found to be 3.96 pC/N and −2.21 pC/N, and the electromechanical coupling coefficients k12 and k26 are determined as 9.3% and 29.9%, respectively. In the range from 500 °C to 800 °C, the X-cut of as-grown crystal possesses high electric resistivity. And the transmittances of CTGAS crystal are over 80% from 700 nm to 2700 nm.

Abstract:The dielectric and electromechanical properties of fully ordered Ca3TaGa3Si2O14 (CTGS) crystals were investigated over the temperature range of -60 similar to 700 degrees C. The highest electromechanical coupling factor, k(26) (18.9%) and piezoelectric coefficient, d(26) (-11.5 pC/N) were obtained for (YXl)-25 degrees cuts. The temperature dependent behavior of resonance frequency (f(r)) was investigated in single-rotated thickness shear mode (TSM) (YXl)theta cuts (theta = -35 degrees similar to 10 degrees). The turnover temperatures of resonance frequency were found to increase from 20 degrees C to 330 degrees C, as the rotation angle h varied from -22.5 degrees to -35 degrees. Bulk acoustic wave (BAW) resonators based on Y(-30 degrees) monolithic disks with a fundamental frequency similar to 2.87 MHz were fabricated, where the in air mechanical quality factor Q was found to be on the order of 24000 and 10000 at 20 degrees C and 700 degrees C, respectively. The high coupling k(26), high mechanical Q, and high electrical resistivity (16 M Omega.cm) at 700 degrees C, together with the near zero TCF characteristics at elevated temperatures, demonstrate the potential of CTGS crystals for high temperature sensor applications.
