Abstract:For the purpose of turning waste into treasure, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), a common azo dye, has been explored as a precursor to synthesize carbon nanodots (CNDs) by a simple, green and economical route, without utilization of strong acids or other oxidizers. Detailed characterization of the synthesized CNDs exhibits its good water dispersibility, with a mean particle size of 3.54 nm and thickness of 0.5-1.6 nm (2-4 layers). Importantly, the much-reduced biotoxicity and excellent fluorescence properties of the synthesized CNDs confer its further potential applications in both bioimaging and selective detection of Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Herein, we reported a simple one-pot green method for preparation of fluorescent copper nanoclusters (Cu NCs) with a high quantum yield up to 8.6%, using glutathione as the stabilizing agent. The as-prepared Cu NCs had good water solubility, excellent stability and ultrafine size through the characterization of UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy. Experimental results showed that the fluorescence of Cu NCs was linearly quenched by the Fe3+ concentrations in the range of 1-100 mu M, with the detection limit of 0.3 mu M. Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:We have developed a novel eco-friendly approach involving hydrazine hydrate-assisted hydrothermal cutting followed by functionalization with poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) for fabricating highly fluorescent graphene quantum dots from coffee grounds. The PEI-functionalized graphene quantum dots exhibit enhanced band-edge photoluminescence with single exponential decay. Their preliminary applications in bioimaging and sensing of heavy metals have been demonstrated.

Abstract:A simple, low cost, and green method was developed for the synthesis of water-soluble and well-dispersed fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs) via a one-step hydrothermal treatment of potatoes. The as-prepared CDs exhibit a strong blue fluorescence, with a quantum yield of up to 15%. We further explored the use of these CDs as a novel sensing probe for the label-free, sensitive and selective detection of Fe3+. This is based on strong fluorescence quenching due to the complex formed between the CDs and Fe3+. The detection limit was as low as 0.025 mu mol L-1, and different concentrations corresponded to different sensitivities. The linear ranges were 1.0-5.0 mmol L-1 and 5.0-50.0 mmol L-1 at lower and higher concentration ranges respectively, and the recoveries of the spiked water samples were 93.7-101.5%. Therefore, the as-prepared CDs could meet the requirements for the monitoring of Fe3+ in environmental samples.

Abstract:A universal green synthesis approach for Glu-Fe3O4 quantum dots (QDs) with ultrasmall size (similar to 3.3 nm) and enhanced catalysis was demonstrated using glutamic acid (Glu) as a dopant. Abundant carboxylic groups and amino groups on the surfaces with a zeta potential of -6.28 mV resulted in greatly improved environmental stability. The Glu-Fe3O4 QDs exhibited oxidoreductase-like catalytic activity. The steady-state kinetic assays indicated that the QDs had a high binding affinity for the substrate TMB. A facile and sensitive colorimetric platform was developed using the Glu-Fe3O4 QDs for the detection of Cr(vi) in naturally sourced water and waste water, which showed a detection limit of 31.02 nM, much lower than the maximum Cr(vi) level permitted in drinking water by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the industrial water threshold. This universal green synthesis approach and the unique catalytic activity of Fe3O4 QDs open a new horizon in materials chemistry and the development of colorimetric biosensors for environmental protection and public health.

Abstract:Sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly biomass waste can be exploited for large-scale production of carbon nanomaterials. Here, alkali lignin was employed as a precursor to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with bright green fluorescence through a simple one-pot route. The prepared CQDs had a size of 1.5-3.5 nm, were water-dispersible, and showed wonderful biocompatibility, in addition to their excellent photoluminescence and electrocatalysis properties. These high-quality CQDs could be used in a wide range of applications such as metal-ion detection, cell imaging, and electrocatalysis. The wide range of biomass lignin feedstocks provide a green, low-cost, and viable strategy for producing high-quality fluorescent CQDs and enable the conversion of biomass waste into high-value products that promote sustainable development of the economy and human society.

Abstract:Natural biomass is used for facile synthesis of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with high fluorescence, owing to its abundance, low cost, and eco-friendliness. In this study, a bottom-up hydrothermal method was used to prepare CQDs from water hyacinth (wh) at a constant temperature of 180 °C for 12 h. The synthesized wh-CQDs had uniform size, amorphous graphite structure, high water solubility (containing multiple hydroxyl and carboxyl groups on the surface), excitation light-dependent characteristics, and high photostability. The results showed that the aqueous solution of CQDs could detect Fe3+ rapidly, sensitively, and highly selectively with a detection limit of 0.084 μM in the linear range of 0–330 μM, which is much lower than the detection limit of 0.77 μM specified by the World Health Organization. More importantly, because the wh-CQDs were synthesized without any additives, they exhibited low toxicity to Klebsiella sp. cells even at high concentrations. Moreover, wh-CQDs emitted bright blue fluorescence in Klebsiella sp. cells, indicating its strong penetrating ability. Correspondingly, the fluorescent cell sorting results also revealed that the proportion of cell internalization reached 41.78%. In this study, wh-CQDs derived from natural biomass were used as high-performance fluorescent probes for Fe3+ detection and Klebsiella sp. imaging. This study is expected to have great significance for the application of biomass carbon spots in the field of cellular imaging and biology.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs), a class of fluorescent nanomaterials, have attracted widespread attention from researchers. Because of their unique chemical properties, these high-quality fluorescent probes are widely used for ion and molecule detection. Excess intake of many ions or molecules can cause harm to the human body. Although iron (in the form of Fe3+ ions) is essential for the human body, excess iron in the human body can cause many diseases, such as iron poisoning. In this study, we have synthesized fluorine and nitrogen co-doped carbon dots (FNCDs) by a hydrothermal method. These FNCDs exhibited good stability, selectivity, and anti-interference ability for Fe3+. Fe3+ could be detected in the range of 0.2–300 μM, and their detection limit is up to 0.08 μM. In addition, the recovery and relative standard deviation measured by the standard addition recovery method were not higher than 107.5% and 1.1%, respectively, indicating that FNCDs have good recovery and accuracy for Fe3+ detection.

Abstract:In this work, high quantum yield and strong photoluminescent carbon quantum dots (C-QDs) are successfully synthesized via a facile and green hydrothermal method using citric acid and Tris as precursors. The as-synthesized C-QDs with a quantum yield (QY) as high as 52% were characterized by UV, FT-IR, TEM, XPS and fluorescence spectroscope. TEM results show that C-QDs are mono-dispersed spherical particles and the diameter distribution of C-QDs is 2.8±1.1nm. The extraordinary photoluminescent properties and low cytotoxicity of C-QDs were obtained through optical property characterization and cytotoxicity assay. In addition, we found that the as-prepared C-QDs had a high affinity for Fe3+ ions and the response toward Fe3+ ions was highly linear (R2=0.997) over the concentration range from 2 to 50μM, which could provide an effective platform for portable detection of Fe3+ ions. Also, it is demonstrated that the photoluminescent C-QDs display hypotoxicity and are biocompatible for use as biosensors in living cells.

Abstract:Nitrogen doped carbon quantum dots (NCQDs) were synthesized using L-glutamic acid as raw material through a facile, effective and green hydrothermal method in one pot. Without any chemical reagents and further surface modifications, the NCQDs emit bright blue fluorescence with a high quantum yield of 17.8% due to the fluorescence enhancement effect of N dopant atoms on a surface of carbon quantum dots. Moreover, the NCQDs present a sensitive response to Fe3+ ions with a detection limit of 4.67 mu M (S/N = 3) through the variation in fluorescence with respect to the target concentration and based on electron transfer from the NCQDs to Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:This study delves into the green synthesis and multifaceted applications of three types of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), namely, CQDs-1, CQDs-2, and CQDs-3. These CQDs were innovatively produced through a gentle pyrolysis process from distinct plant-based precursors: genipin with glucose for CQDs-1, genipin with extracted gardenia seeds for CQDs-2, and genipin with whole gardenia seeds for CQDs-3. Advanced analytical techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), were employed to detail the CQDs' structural and surface characteristics, revealing their unique functional groups and surface chemistries. The study further explores the CQDs' bioimaging potential, where confocal fluorescence microscopy evidenced their swift uptake by Escherichia coli bacteria, indicating their suitability for bacterial imaging. These CQDs were also applied in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), acting as reducing agents and stabilizers. Among these, CQD3-AuNPs were distinguished by their remarkable stability and catalytic efficiency, achieving a 99.7% reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in just 10 min and maintaining near-complete reduction efficiency (99.6%) after 60 days. This performance notably surpasses that of AuNPs synthesized using sodium citrate, underscoring the exceptional capabilities of CQD3-AuNPs. These insights pave the way for leveraging CQDs and CQD-stabilized AuNPs in bacterial imaging and catalysis, presenting valuable directions for future scientific inquiry and practical applications.

Abstract:A facile, green, and high-output hydrothermal synthesis was proposed for the fabrication of highly fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-doped CDs). The nitrogen content in N-doped CDs reached 19.2% and demonstrated strong blue fluorescence emission was obtained with fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of up to 32.9%, which exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield, high photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. The N-doped CDs possess high photostability, low toxicity, and excellent biocompatibility, based on which the N-doped CDs were successfully applied as a fluorescence probe for cell imaging. Moreover, it was then successfully demonstrated for sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ in serum.

Abstract:Carbon dots have shown a broad application prospect in the fields of sensing and detection, biological imaging, and optoelectronic devices. However, it is still challenging to adopt a simple and green synthesis route and to develop new precursor systems to prepare full-color luminescent carbon dots. This study proposes a mechanism for fine regulation of carbon dot fluorescence spectra based on surface states of CN, COC, and OH, among which CN play a major role in long wavelength emission while COC and OH are responsible for the blue shift of emission wavelength. Using 4,4-bipyridine and p-phenylenediamine as precursors in safe and environmentally friendly glycol and water as solvents for the first time, the fine spectral carbon dots with full spectrum luminescence from purple (441 nm) to red (627 nm) were successfully synthesized by simply changing the composition of the reaction solvent and using a short reaction time. Compared with other reports on regulating polychromatic carbon dots, our method is more refined and has a wider distribution of luminescent colors. In addition, the obtained carbon dots based on such surface state luminescence mechanism have shown good application prospects in specific detection of Fe3+and cell labeling.

Abstract:Carbon nanodots (C-dots), a new type of potential alternative to conventional semiconductor quantum dots, have attracted numerous attentions in various applications including bio-chemical sensing, cell imaging, etc., due to their chemical inertness, low toxicity and flexible functionalization. Various methods including electrochemical (EC) methods have been reported for the synthesis of C-dots. However, complex procedures and/or carbon source-containing electrodes are often required. Herein, solid-state C-dots were simply prepared by bottom-up EC carbonization of nitriles (e.g. acetonitrile) in the presence of an ionic liquid [e.g. 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium hexafluorophosphate (BMIMPF6)], using carbon-free electrodes. Due to the positive charges of BMIM(+) on the C-dots, the final products presented in a precipitate form on the cathode, and the unreacted nitriles and BMIMPF6 can be easily removed by simple vacuum filtration. The as-prepared solid-state C-dots can be well dispersed in an aqueous medium with excellent photoluminescence properties. The average size of the C-dots was found to be 3.02 ± 0.12 nm as evidenced by transmission electron microscopy. Other techniques such as UV-vis spectroscopy, fluorescence spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and atomic force microscopy were applied for the characterization of the C-dots and to analyze the possible generation mechanism. These C-dots have been successfully applied in efficient cell imaging and specific ferric ion detection.

Abstract:We propose an ingenious method for synthesizing cross-linked hollow fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (HFCNs) with green emission by simply mixing acetic acid, water, and diphosphorus pentoxide. This is an automatic method without external heat treatment to rapidly produce large quantities of HFCNs, in contrast to other syntheses of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles that required high temperature, complicated operations, or long reaction times. Characterizations of HFCNs through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared/Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction indicate that abundant small oxygenous graphite domains existed and endowed the HFCNs with fluorescent properties. After simple post-treatments, the cross-linked HFCNs can be used for cell-imaging applications. Compared with traditional dyes and CdTe quantum dots, HFCNs are the superior fluorescent bioimaging agent according to their low toxicity, stability, and resistance to photobleaching. The HFCNs were also applied to watermark ink and fluorescent powder, showing their promising potentials for further wide usage.
