Abstract:Nitrogen and phosphorus co-doped carbon dots (N,P-C-dots) were prepared by microwave-assisted thermolysis of N-phosphonomethyl aminodiacetic acid and ethylenediamine. N,P-C-dots exhibit bright blue fluorescence with an emission maximum at 418 nm. Experimental results show that they have uniform dispersion with the average size of 3.3 nm, a fluorescence decay time of 7.8 ns, a quantum yield of 17.5 %, low toxicity, and good stability. All these make them an excellent choice as a fluorescent nanomaterial for use in cellular imaging.

Abstract:A facile, green, and high-output hydrothermal synthesis was proposed for the fabrication of highly fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-doped CDs). The nitrogen content in N-doped CDs reached 19.2% and demonstrated strong blue fluorescence emission was obtained with fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of up to 32.9%, which exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield, high photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. The N-doped CDs possess high photostability, low toxicity, and excellent biocompatibility, based on which the N-doped CDs were successfully applied as a fluorescence probe for cell imaging. Moreover, it was then successfully demonstrated for sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ in serum.

Abstract:Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) with plenty of favorable properties have been extensively investigated in diverse areas including bioimaging, biomedicine, sensor, energy storage, anti-counterfeiting, photocatalysis, and optoelectronic devices. Herein, a simple, rapid, and green sonochemical-assisted method for fabricating nitrogen-doped CDs has been developed. In this approach, the nitrogen-doped CDs can be obtained through irradiation by intensive ultrasonic waves from ultrasonic probes in 30 min. The achieved CDs exhibit excellent water dispersibility, which can be ascribed to their high functionalization. Importantly, the CDs also demonstrate remarkable fluorescent properties, high photostability, and low cytotoxicity, which can be utilized for multicolor cellular imaging and anti-counterfeiting applications. As far as we know, the sonochemical-assisted method for rapidly synthesizing nitrogen-doped CDs from gelatin has never been reported before. Significantly, the sonochemical-assisted approach to rapidly fabricate CDs is versatile for the facile construction of fluorescent CDs, and the obtained CDs can be potentially used in various areas including bioimaging and anti-counterfeiting.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:A green one‐step hydrothermal method has been successfully used to prepare carbon dots (CDs) by selectively co‐doping nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur elements. For the sensitive detection of iron ions, a fluorescence quencher sensor based on nitrogen‐ and sulphur‐doped carbon dots (red NS‐CDs) has been developed, because of the good optical properties and bio‐histocompatibility of green NPS‐CDs and blue NP‐CDs, They are observed to penetrate NCl−H292 cells, fluorescing green and localizing in the cytoplasm. Carbon dots (CDs) with tunable photoluminescence was successfully prepared via selective co‐doping of three elements, including nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur element by green one‐step hydrothermal method. Nitrogen‐sulfur‐doped CDs (red NS‐CDs), which emitted red fluorescence under UV excitation, were used to detect iron ions in the linear range 1–50 μM, yielding detectable limits as low as 94 nM. The nitrogen‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (blue NP‐CDs) exhibited blue fluorescence with quantum yields up to 34.5 %. When the concentration is 800 μg/mL, it showed excellent anticancer effect in vitro. The nitrogen‐sulfur‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (green NPS‐CDs) emitting green fluorescence showed a low cytotoxicity at a high concentration of 800 μg/mL and were used for intracelluar imaging of NCl−H292 cells. This study demonstrated the photoluminescent characteristics of carbon dots (CDs) and highlighted the ability to modify their peak fluorescence emission wavelengths through the flexible combination of specific reagents under comparable hydrothermal conditions. Additionally, it provided valuable insights into the efficient methodologies for synthesizing CDs suitable for various application scenarios.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) are attracting significant research attention due to their low toxicity and highly favorable photochemical properties. This study reports the synthesis of nitrogen‐doped CDs (N‐CDs) using 3‐aminophenol and o‐phenylenediamine as carbon precursors and their application to non‐toxic, biocompatible polychromatic agents for biological imaging studies. The prepared N‐CDs exhibited multicolored fluorescence (blue, green, yellow, orange) with excellent optical stability and biocompatibility. As a result of FT‐IR and XPS, N‐CD was found to have similar ‐OH and C‐H in the surface functional group, showing a graphene structure with good hydrophilicity. The size of the synthesized N‐CDs were confirmed by TEM images to be less than 10nm. MTT analysis was performed using Hela cells, and cell survival was very high in all N‐CDs. Among N‐CDs, G‐CDs exhibit the highest fluorescence intensity and provide excellent fluorescence microscopic images for cells in blue, green, and red channels. This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:Sulfur-doped carbon dots (S-CDs) with a quantum yield (QY) of 5.5% and nitrogen, sulfur co-doped carbon dots (N,S-CDs) with a QY of 54.4% were synthesized, respectively, via the same hydrothermal route using α-lipoic acid as the carbon source. The obtained S-CDs and N,S-CDs had similar sizes but different optical features. The QY of N,S-CDs was gradually enhanced when extending the reaction time to increase the nitrogen content. After careful characterization of these CDs, the doped nitrogen element was believed to be in the form of C=N and C-N bonds which enhanced the fluorescence efficiency significantly. Meanwhile, the co-doped sulfur element was found to be synergistic for nitrogen doping in N,S-CDs. The optimal N,S-CDs were successfully employed as good multicolor cell imaging probes due to their fine dispersion in water, excitation-dependent emission, excellent fluorescence stability and low toxicity. Besides, such N,S-CDs showed a wide detection range and excellent accuracy as fluorescent sensors for Fe(3+) ions.
Hydrothermal synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots with real-time live-cell imaging and blood-brain barrier penetration capabilities

Abstract:Nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were synthesized using a one-pot hydrothermal treatment with citric acid in the presence of polyethylenimine. Transmission electron microscopy analysis revealed that the N-CDs were monodispersed and quasi-spherical with an average size of ~2.6 nm. Under ultraviolet irradiation the N-CDs emitted a strong blue luminescence with a quantum yield as high as 51%. Moreover, the N-CDs exhibited a negligible cytotoxicity and could be applied as efficient nanoprobes for real-time imaging of live cells. In addition, the ability of the N-CDs to cross the blood-brain barrier (BBB) in a concentration-dependent manner was demonstrated using an in vitro BBB model. Therefore, these PEI-passivated N-CDs with real-time live-cell imaging and BBB-penetration capabilities hold promise for traceable drug delivery to the brain.

Abstract:The efficient detection of Fe 3+ and MnO 4 − in a water environment is very important and challenging due to their harmful effects on the health of humanity and environmental systems. Good biocompatibility, sensitivity, selectivity, and superior photophysical properties were important attributes of carbon dot-based CDs sensors for sensing applications. In this work, we synthesized N, P- co -doped carbon dots (N/P CDs) with guanosine 5′-monophosphate (GMP) as a green carbon source, with high fluorescence quantum yield in water (QY, 53.72%). First, the luminescent N/P CDs showed a three-state "on-off-on" fluorescence response upon the sequential addition of Fe 3+ and F − , with a low detection limit of 12 nM for Fe 3+ and 8.5 nM for F − , respectively. Second, the N/P CDs also exhibited desirable selectivity and sensitivity for toxic MnO 4 − detection with the limit of detection of 18.2 nM, through a turn-off mechanism. Moreover, the luminescent N/P CDs successfully monitored the aforementioned ions in environmental water samples and in Escherichia coli .

Abstract:The authors report on the microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) having a fluorescence quantum yield of 80% and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.0 ns. Citric acid and ethylenediamine were used as carbon source and as a nitrogen source, respectively. The N-CDs show excellent photostability over a wide range of pH values (4–11), even at high ion strength (2 M KCl) and after 4 h of continuous UV light irradiation. This makes these N-QDs promising candidates for fluorescent probes. Cellular toxicity test showed the N-CDs not to be cytotoxic to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and human embryonic kidney cells even at 400 μg∙mL−1 levels after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 445 nm is quenched by Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite ions, respectively. The N-CDs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for the ions Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite. Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with advantages including excellent biocompatibility, low cost, and easy modification make them highly promising for applications in biological imaging. Here, we successfully synthesized dark green fluorescent CDs (g-CDs) using trinitropyrene as a carbon source and 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid as the reactant in one-pot synthesis. The results revealed that the g-CDs had an average uniform particle size of 4.93 nm, with a structure similar to graphite. The g-CDs imparted excellent water-solubility due to the presence of hydrophilic groups. The g-CDs exhibited an optimal fluorescence emission wavelength of 512 nm in acetone solvent, with a maximum quantum yield of 38.4%. When transferred into a normal saline solution, the g-CDs retained their green fluorescence, with the optimal fluorescence emission wavelength shifting to 505 nm. Notably, we observed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity and maximum quantum yield of up to 79.4% when the g-CDs were dissolved in a polar solvent. Furthermore, in vitro fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated rapid cell entry, excellent fluorescence performance, high biocompatibility, and universality of the g-CDs. These findings underscore the high hydrophobicity and biocompatibility of our newly designed g-CDs, thus highlighting their immense potential as fluorescent probes in bioimaging and disease tracing applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots with dual emission have drown increasing attention in biology and medicine due to their fascinating optical and biological properties. Herein, dual emissive nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-doped CDs) are synthesized by simple annealing of ammonium citrate in the air via solvent-free carbonization. Interestingly, N-doped CDs display dual emission peaking at 462 nm and 560 nm under excitation of 360 nm and 470 nm, respectively. The dual PL emission spectra of the N-doped CDs illustrate that each emission is associated with the single excitation band. The data reveals that two autonomous fluorescent centres are co-existed in N-doped CDs because doping with nitrogen (N) could change the surface chemistry of the CDs. In addition, dual emissive N-doped CDs have significantly low toxicity and could be applied as multicolor cell imaging using T-ca cancer cells. Moreover, obtained N-doped CDs are sensitive to temperature in the range of 15–90 °C and show potential to detect temperature in living cells. Furthermore, low toxicity and high biocompatibility proved that the obtained N-doped CDs could be applied in vivo imaging. Besides, the dual emissive N-doped CDs have the ability to probe Fe3+ ions in water as well as in living T-ca cells.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Abstract:For the purpose of turning waste into treasure, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), a common azo dye, has been explored as a precursor to synthesize carbon nanodots (CNDs) by a simple, green and economical route, without utilization of strong acids or other oxidizers. Detailed characterization of the synthesized CNDs exhibits its good water dispersibility, with a mean particle size of 3.54 nm and thickness of 0.5-1.6 nm (2-4 layers). Importantly, the much-reduced biotoxicity and excellent fluorescence properties of the synthesized CNDs confer its further potential applications in both bioimaging and selective detection of Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) also nitrogen-doped CDs (N-CDs) were produced by green hydrothermal synthesis using Pea and ethanediamine as the carbon and nitrogen source, separately. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images displayed that the prepared CDs and N-CDs were well dispersed, had a spherical morphology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) figures of CDs and N-CDs presented a graphitic amorphous structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) verified that CDs and N-CDs carried many different hydrophilic groups (for example hydroxyl, carboxyl/carbonyl, amide, amino groups) on the surface, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) together verified this result. However, the optical properties and fluorescence quantum yield for N-CDs were obviously superior to those of CDs. Furthermore, the prepared N-CDs displayed outstanding advantages including low toxicity, satisfactory biocompatibility, and excellent chemical stability. More prominently, the prepared N-CDs could detect Hg2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity in both water samples and HeLa cells.
One-Step Synthesis of Label-Free Ratiometric Fluorescence Carbon Dots for the Detection of Silver Ions and Glutathione and Cellular Imaging Applications

Abstract:The construction of ratiometric fluorescence assay has displayed fantastic advantages in improving semi-quantitative visualization capability by presenting successive color changes. Herein, long-wavelength emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were developed for intrinsic ratiometric detection of silver ions (Ag+) and glutathione (GSH), accompanied by visualization fluorescence variation of orange and green. The label-free N-CDs were favorably obtained through one-step hydrothermal synthesis and displayed single long-wavelength emission at 618 nm under the excitation wavelength of 478 nm. Interestingly, a ratio rising peak emerges at 532 nm and the emission at 618 nm decreases with the introduction of Ag+, which exhibits ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics ( I618nm/ I532nm) in the range of 0-140 μM with significant fluorescence varying from orange to green. Furthermore, the fluorescence of CDs@Ag(I) can be effectively ratiometric recovered by virtue of a specific reaction of GSH with Ag+, which is accompanied by the fluorescence of the solution returning from green to orange. In addition, the N-CDs hold excellent biocompatibility which can be implemented as the visualization biosensing platform for intracellular determination of Ag+ and GSH, demonstrating that proposed N-CDs have tremendous potential in biological systems.
Synthesis of Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Nanostructures from Polyurethane Sponge for Bioimaging and Catalysis

Abstract:A facile and environmentally friendly method was developed for the fabrication of N-doped carbon nanomaterials by hydrothermal treatment using polyurethane (PU) sponge as a carbon source. We have demonstrated that the hydrothermal decomposition of PU sponge involves top-down hydrolysis and bottom-up polymerization processes for the synthesis of N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs). Fluorescence spectroscopy and cytotoxicity studies indicated that these highly-soluble N-CDs show excellent photoluminescence properties and low cytotoxicity, and can be used as good probes for cellular imaging. Additionally, the N-doped hollow carbon nanostructures can be designed using a simple template method. The prepared N-doped double-shelled hollow carbon nanotubes exhibited excellent ORR electrocatalytic activity and superior durability. Indeed, our method described here can provide an efficient way to synthesize N-doped carbon-based materials for a broad range of applications.
One-step Synthesis of Biomass-Based Carbon Dots for Detection of Metal Ions and Cell Imaging

Abstract:Biomass-based carbon dots (Bio-CDs) were prepared from dehydroabietic acid using a one-step hydrothermal process. Characterization by TEM, XPS and FTIR spectroscopy showed that the Bio-CDs are spherical nanoparticles containing mainly C, N and O elements, with functional groups such as amino and carbonyl groups on their surface. The optical properties of the Bio-CDs were studied in detail. A solution of Bio-CDs exhibited excitation-dependent blue fluorescence emission. The solution showed excellent photostability under ultraviolet light and the fluorescence intensity could be enhanced by decreasing the temperature. The intensity of fluorescence emission of the solution was essentially unchanged over the pH range 3.91–8.69, and in the presence of different anions and cations, other than Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ . Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ ions, respectively, quenched and enhanced the intensity of the fluorescence emission of the solution, allowing sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ (LOD = 2.33 μM, Em = 437 nm) and of Pb 2+ (LOD = 0.27 μM, Em = 437 nm and LOD = 0.33 μM, Em = 500 nm). As a further demonstration of potential applications, the Bio-CDs were shown to have low cytotoxicity and to stain cell nuclei as effectively as the commonly used nuclear stain 4′,6-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), demonstrating their promise in the field of cell imaging.
