Abstract:A fluorescent probe for the determination of nitrite (NO2-) was fabricated by using green fluorescent nitrogen doped carbon dots (NCDs). The NCDs were synthesized via a one-pot hydrothermal carbonization of citric acid in the presence of p-phenylenediamine as the nitrogen source. The N content of the NCDs was high to 17.09% and consisted of a variety of functional groups on the NCDs surface, including sp2-hybridized CN, porphyrin C-N-C and amino N in N-(C) 3 or H-N-(C) 2 et al. N atoms were also doped within the framework of the NCDs. The almost monodisperse NCDs (average particle diameter = 3.67 nm) exhibited green photoluminescence (PL) with excitation/emission maxima of 360/505 nm. The PL of the NCDs was dependent on both excitation wavelength and solution pH. The NCDs showed a strong PL quenching response to NO2- under acidic conditions (pH = 2.5). The PL intensity of the NCDs was inversely proportional to the concentration of NO2- between 0.02 and 40 μM (R2 = 0.992), with a detection limit of 21.2 nM. The practical use of the nanoprobe for NO2- determination in food samples was also demonstrated, successfully. NCD-nitroso compounds formed because of reaction between the abundant amide groups on the surface of NCDs with the NO2-, which caused an inner filter effect and static PL quenching. Importantly, the NCDs had low cellular toxicity and were successfully used as a multicolor cellular imaging agent for Hepg2 cells.

Abstract:The construction of ratiometric fluorescence assay has displayed fantastic advantages in improving semi-quantitative visualization capability by presenting successive color changes. Herein, long-wavelength emission nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were developed for intrinsic ratiometric detection of silver ions (Ag+) and glutathione (GSH), accompanied by visualization fluorescence variation of orange and green. The label-free N-CDs were favorably obtained through one-step hydrothermal synthesis and displayed single long-wavelength emission at 618 nm under the excitation wavelength of 478 nm. Interestingly, a ratio rising peak emerges at 532 nm and the emission at 618 nm decreases with the introduction of Ag+, which exhibits ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics ( I618nm/ I532nm) in the range of 0-140 μM with significant fluorescence varying from orange to green. Furthermore, the fluorescence of CDs@Ag(I) can be effectively ratiometric recovered by virtue of a specific reaction of GSH with Ag+, which is accompanied by the fluorescence of the solution returning from green to orange. In addition, the N-CDs hold excellent biocompatibility which can be implemented as the visualization biosensing platform for intracellular determination of Ag+ and GSH, demonstrating that proposed N-CDs have tremendous potential in biological systems.

Abstract:In this research, we successfully developed a green, economical and effective one–step hydrothermal method for the synthesis of fluorescent nitrogen–doped carbon dots (N–CDs) by utilizing fresh tea leaves and urea as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The obtained N–CDs were characterized by TEM, XPS and FT–IR. We found that the N–CDs were near–spherical with an average size of about 2.32 nm, and contained abundant oxygen and nitrogen functional groups. The N–CDs exhibited bright blue fluorescence under ultraviolet illumination, with the maximum emission at 455 nm. Meanwhile, the as–prepared N–CDs could be selectively quenched by Fe3+ ions. The quenching of N–CDs is linearly correlated with the concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 0.1–400 μM with a low detection limit of 0.079 μM. Significantly, the N–CDs present excellent biocompatibility and high photostability. The results also depict that multicolor fluorescence is displayed under a fluorescence microscope and successfully applied for the detection of intracellular Fe3+. To sum up, the fluorescent N–CDs are expected to be a sensitive detection probe for Fe3+ in biological systems.

Abstract:N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were successfully synthesized via simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization using chitosan as carbon and nitrogen sources. The obtained N-CDs contained a variety of functional groups on the NCDs surface, and exhibited excitation-independent behavior and strong blue fluorescence with a relatively higher fluorescence quantum yield (QY = 35%). It also presented excellent water solubility, resistance to pH change, high ion strength and UV irradiation. Since the fluorescence of the N-CDs could be selectively quenched by NO2-, they could act as a fluorescent sensor for the determination of NO2- in real tap water and lake water samples with a wide linear range (1-500 μM) and low detection limit (0.1 μM). They could also be used for bacterial imaging as multicolor fluorescent probes. The results indicated that N-CDs could be a promising candidate material for biomedical applications.

Abstract:A fluorescent carbon dots probe for the detection of aqueous nitrite was fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method, and the transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, UV–Vis absorption spectrometer and fluorescence spectrophotometer were used to study the property of carbon dots. The fluorescent property of carbon dots influenced by the concentration of aqueous nitrite was studied. The interaction between the electron-donating functional groups and the electron-accepting nitrous acid could account for the quenching effect on carbon dots by adding aqueous nitrite. The products of the hydrolysis of aqueous nitrite performed a stronger quenching effect at lower pH. The relationship between the relative fluorescence intensity of carbon dots and the concentration of nitrite was described by the Stern–Volmer equation ( I 0 / I − 1 = 0.046[ Q ]) with a fine linearity ( R 2 = 0.99). The carbon dots-based probe provides a convenient method for the detection of nitrite concentration.

Abstract:Two natural carbon sources, glutamic acid and tyrosine, were used to fabricate strong green emission nitrogen-doped graphene quantum dots (N-GQDs) with the one-pot pyrolysis method. The morphology of the prepared GQDs has been characterized by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, showing a well-displayed crystalline structure with a lattice spacing of 0.262 nm. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy were used to analyze the surface functional groups and elemental composition, suggesting that the N-GQDs have active carboxylic and amino functional groups. Meanwhile, photoluminescence and ultraviolet-visible (UV-vis) spectroscopy were used to evaluate the optical properties of GQDs; the prepared N-GQDs show an excitation-dependent fluorescence behavior with a maximum excitation/emission wavelength at 460/522 nm, respectively. N-GQDs showed good photostability and the fluorescence intensity quenched about 10% after irradiating 2800 s in the experiment of time kinetic analysis. The MTT assay was utilized to assess the viability of N-GQDs; good biocompatibility with a relatively high quantum yield of 12% demonstrated the potential for serving as bioimaging agents. Besides, the selectivity study on metal ions indicates that the N-GQDs could be used in Cu2+ detection. The linear range is from 0.1 to 10 μM with a limit of detection of 0.06 μM. Overall, these proposed N-GQDs with one-pot synthesis showed their promising potential in cell imaging and Cu2+ monitoring applications involved in the biological environment.

Abstract:The authors report on the microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) having a fluorescence quantum yield of 80% and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.0 ns. Citric acid and ethylenediamine were used as carbon source and as a nitrogen source, respectively. The N-CDs show excellent photostability over a wide range of pH values (4–11), even at high ion strength (2 M KCl) and after 4 h of continuous UV light irradiation. This makes these N-QDs promising candidates for fluorescent probes. Cellular toxicity test showed the N-CDs not to be cytotoxic to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and human embryonic kidney cells even at 400 μg∙mL−1 levels after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 445 nm is quenched by Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite ions, respectively. The N-CDs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for the ions Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite. Abstract:Nitrite and sulfite play important roles in human health and environmental science, so it is desired to develop a facile and efficient method to evaluate NO 2 - and SO 3 2- concentrations. In this article, the use of green alternatives with the potential of multi-functionality has been synthesized to detect nitrite and sulfite based on fluorescent probe. The carbon dots (CDs) with starch as only raw materials show fluorescence turn “on-off-on” response towards NO 2 - and SO 3 2- with the limits of detection of 0.425 and 0.243 μМ, respectively. Once nitrite was present in the solution, the fluorescence of CDs was quenched rapidly due to the charge transfer. When sulfite was introduced, the quenching fluorescence of CDs was effectively recovered because of the redox reaction between NO 2 - and SO 3 2- , and thus providing a new way for NO 2 - and SO 3 2- detection. Owing to their excellent analytical characteristics and low cytotoxicity, the “on-off-on” sensor was successfully employed for intracellular bioimaging of NO 2 - and SO 3 2- .

Abstract:Tunable multicolor carbon dots (CDs) with a quantum yield reach up to 35% were generated directly from rhodamine and urea via one-step hydrothermal approach and purified through silica gel column chromatography. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the as-prepared CDs possess a small size distribution below 10 nm with bright blue, green, and yellow color emission, designated as b-CDs, g-CDs, and y-CDs, respectively. The in-depth investigations reveal that the multicolor emission CDs with different fraction displays fluorescence emission wavelength ranges from 398 nm (b-CDs), 525 nm (g-CDs), to 553 nm (y-CDs) which could be well modulated by controlling the amount of heteroatom nitrogen especially amino nitrogen onto their surface structures. Further experiments verify the important role of nitrogen content by using rhodamine solely or substituting urea with sulfur containing compounds as precursors to produce corresponding CDs since the performance is lower than that of urea incorporation. Theoretical calculation results also reveal that the increasing amount of amino nitrogen into their surface structures of b-CDs, g-CDs to y-CDs is responsible for reduced band gaps energy, which result in the redshifted wavelength. Benefiting from the excellent photoluminescence properties, wide pH variation range, high photo stability, and low toxicity, these CDs were employed for HClO sensing at 553 nm within the range 5 to 140 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.27 ± 0.025 μM (n = 3) and multicolor cellular imaging in HeLa cells.

Abstract:A photoluminescent detection method for nitrite with high selectivity and sensitivity using carbon nanodots (CNDs) is demonstrated. The selectivity of nitrite is accomplished by a highly specific diazotization reaction between nitrite and p-phenylenediamine (p-PDA). In the presence of nitrite, p-PDA easily reacts to form the diazonium cation in the acidic aqueous solution. By alkalization of the reaction mixture, diazonium cation of p-PDA was converted to an aryl radical to form aggregated CNDs, which causes the change in the photoluminescent intensity of CNDs. In the present method, nitrite can be selectively detected down to 1 μM over several anions, such as nitrate, perchlorate, sulfate, fluoride, chloride, and bromide at mM levels.

Abstract:In recent years, carbon dots (CDs), a type of new carbon nanomaterial, have been widely used. In this study, new fluorescent CDs were synthesized via a one-step hydrothermal synthesis using 2,3-dihydroxynaphthalene and sodium citrate as the carbon source. The results showed that the prepared CDs were significantly quenched by Fe 3+ in aqueous environments, and a good linear relationship between the fluorescence intensity of the CDs and a low concentration of Fe 3+ was observed. The detection limit of Fe 3+ was 0.12 μM, the linear range was 0–4.69 μM and the recovery range of the sample detection was 84–111%. The new fluorescent CDs showed high sensitivity to Fe 3+ in the presence of various metal ions and anions. These excellent characteristics promise extensive potential applications for our fluorescent CDs in aqueous environmental monitoring.

Abstract:For the purpose of turning waste into treasure, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), a common azo dye, has been explored as a precursor to synthesize carbon nanodots (CNDs) by a simple, green and economical route, without utilization of strong acids or other oxidizers. Detailed characterization of the synthesized CNDs exhibits its good water dispersibility, with a mean particle size of 3.54 nm and thickness of 0.5-1.6 nm (2-4 layers). Importantly, the much-reduced biotoxicity and excellent fluorescence properties of the synthesized CNDs confer its further potential applications in both bioimaging and selective detection of Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) have caught enormous attention owing to their distinctive properties, such as their high water solubility, tunable optical properties, and easy surface modification, which can be generally used for the detection of heavy metals and organic pollutants. Herein, nitrogen and fluorine co-doped carbon dots (NFCDs) were designed via a rapid, low-cost, and one-step microwave-assisted technique using DL-malic acid and levofloxacin. The NFCDs emitted intense green fluorescence under UV lighting, and the optical emission peak at 490 nm was observed upon a 280 nm excitation, with a high quantum yield of 21.03%. Interestingly, the spectral measurements illustrated excitation-independent and concentration-independent single-color fluorescence owing to the presence of nitrogen and fluorine elements in the surface functional groups. Additionally, the NFCDs were applied for the selective detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid based on the “turn-off” mode. The detection limits were determined as 1.03 and 4.22 μM, respectively. The quenching mechanisms were explored using the static quenching mechanism and the inner filter effect. Therefore, a NFCDs fluorescent probe with single color emission was successfully developed for the convenient and rapid detection of Fe3+ and ascorbic acid in environments.

Abstract:In this work, chemiluminescence (CL) from peroxynitrous acid (ONOOH)–carbonate system greatly amplified by carbon dots was observed. The CL mechanism of the ONOOH–carbonate–carbon dots system has been investigated and the results reveal that the carbon dots could serve as the energy acceptor, which gives us new insight into the optical properties of the new emerging carbon nanomaterial. There is a good linear relationship between the CL signal and the concentration of the nitrite using for ONOOH formation, which provides us a nitrite sensing method with sensitivity as high as 5.0×10−9M (S/N=3). The method has been successfully applied to the determination of nitrite in tap water with the recovery of 98%. The standard deviations are within 2.5%.

Abstract:Biomass-based carbon dots (Bio-CDs) were prepared from dehydroabietic acid using a one-step hydrothermal process. Characterization by TEM, XPS and FTIR spectroscopy showed that the Bio-CDs are spherical nanoparticles containing mainly C, N and O elements, with functional groups such as amino and carbonyl groups on their surface. The optical properties of the Bio-CDs were studied in detail. A solution of Bio-CDs exhibited excitation-dependent blue fluorescence emission. The solution showed excellent photostability under ultraviolet light and the fluorescence intensity could be enhanced by decreasing the temperature. The intensity of fluorescence emission of the solution was essentially unchanged over the pH range 3.91–8.69, and in the presence of different anions and cations, other than Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ . Fe 3+ and Pb 2+ ions, respectively, quenched and enhanced the intensity of the fluorescence emission of the solution, allowing sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ (LOD = 2.33 μM, Em = 437 nm) and of Pb 2+ (LOD = 0.27 μM, Em = 437 nm and LOD = 0.33 μM, Em = 500 nm). As a further demonstration of potential applications, the Bio-CDs were shown to have low cytotoxicity and to stain cell nuclei as effectively as the commonly used nuclear stain 4′,6-diamino-2-phenylindole (DAPI), demonstrating their promise in the field of cell imaging.

The obtained NS-CDs showed the relatively narrow size distributions (2.1~3.9 nm) with the lattice spacing of 0.29 nm, as well as the excitation-dependent photoluminescence (PL) emission activity with the quantum yield (QY) of 18%. More interestingly, the PL intensity of NS-CDs was quenched by the addition of copper or lead ions (Cu2+ or Pb2+), which was shown in the tradition detection method by PL spectra. The NS-CDs exhibited ultrasensitive colorimetric sensing capability for both Cu2+ and Pb2+ by the color variance using naked eyes without any further treating. Two different coupling ways for detecting Pb2+ and Cu2+ were induced by the analysis of the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). And the as-prepared NS-CDs showed their potential application in the heavy metal ions detection for the wastewater determination.
