Abstract:N-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) were successfully synthesized via simple one-step hydrothermal carbonization using chitosan as carbon and nitrogen sources. The obtained N-CDs contained a variety of functional groups on the NCDs surface, and exhibited excitation-independent behavior and strong blue fluorescence with a relatively higher fluorescence quantum yield (QY = 35%). It also presented excellent water solubility, resistance to pH change, high ion strength and UV irradiation. Since the fluorescence of the N-CDs could be selectively quenched by NO2-, they could act as a fluorescent sensor for the determination of NO2- in real tap water and lake water samples with a wide linear range (1-500 μM) and low detection limit (0.1 μM). They could also be used for bacterial imaging as multicolor fluorescent probes. The results indicated that N-CDs could be a promising candidate material for biomedical applications.

Abstract:Fluorescent nitrogen and sulfur co-doped carbon dots (NSCDs) were synthesized by a one-step pyrolysis strategy using casein as carbon, nitrogen and sulfur sources, and characterized by UVevis spectrum, fluorescent spectrum, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and FT-IR, etc. The synthesized NSCDs displayed a blue emission under ultraviolet illumination with a quantum yield of 31.8%, and a good aqueous solubility, photostability and biocompatibility. It was found that the fluorescence intensity of NSCDs could be selectively quenched by Hg2+, so NSCDs was used as an effective probe for the detection of Hg2+. The linear range and the limit of detection (LOD) of the fluorescent sensor based on NSCDs for the detection of Hg2+ were 0.01-0.25 mu M and 6.5 mu M, respectively. Spiked water samples were detected by the sensor with the recovery of 95.4-106.3% and relative standard deviation (RSD) of 3.6-8.6%. It was also observed that the quenched NSCDs-Hg2+ system could be restored by the addition of biothiols such as L-cysteine (Lcy), homocysteine (Hcy) and glutathione (GSH), thus NSCDs-Hg2+ system was employed as a fluorescent sensor for the detection of biothiols. The linear range and LOD of the NSCDs-Hg2+ system were 1-10 mM and 23.6 nM for Lcy, 0.2-2.5 mM and 12.3 nM for Hcy, and 0.1-2.0 mM and 16.8 nM for GSH, respectively. The NSCDs-Hg2+ system was applied for the detection of biothiols in serum samples with satisfied results. In addition, the study in vitro imaging HeLa cells revealed that the synthesized NSCDs could be used as effective fluorescent probes in cellular imaging without noticeable cytotoxicity. Abstract:Nitrite (NO2−) is a well-known inorganic pollutant in food and environment that can trigger severe environmental and healthy problems. Consequently, establishing accurate NO2− detection method is very important for food security, environment monitoring and human health. In this work, green fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with a high fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of 36.13% are prepared for NO2− detection. The CDs are prepared by one-pot hydrothermal carbonization and polymerization of acriflavine. After carbonization, the anti-photobleaching property of CDs significantly enhanced compared to acriflavine. Under acidic conditions, the added of NO2− selectively induces the aggregation and fluorescence quenching of CDs. A good fluorescence linearity response in the range of 50 nM to 10 μM can be developed for NO2− quantitative analysis, with a detection limit of 11.6 nM. Owing to the diazotization reaction of NO2− and the phenylamine groups on the surface of CDs, this method shows excellent selectivity compared to common ions and amino acids. Furthermore, the proposed method shows favorable results in the detection of real water and Cantonese style sausage sample. This study provides a simple and efficient method for NO2− detection in food and environment.

Abstract:The authors report on the microwave-assisted one-step synthesis of nitrogen-doped carbon dots (N-CDs) having a fluorescence quantum yield of 80% and a fluorescence lifetime of 15.0 ns. Citric acid and ethylenediamine were used as carbon source and as a nitrogen source, respectively. The N-CDs show excellent photostability over a wide range of pH values (4–11), even at high ion strength (2 M KCl) and after 4 h of continuous UV light irradiation. This makes these N-QDs promising candidates for fluorescent probes. Cellular toxicity test showed the N-CDs not to be cytotoxic to human nasopharyngeal carcinoma cells and human embryonic kidney cells even at 400 μg∙mL−1 levels after 48 h incubation. The fluorescence intensity of N-CDs at 445 nm is quenched by Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite ions, respectively. The N-CDs are shown to be viable fluorescent probes for the ions Fe(III), Hg(II), and chlorite. Abstract:A fluorescent carbon dots probe for the detection of aqueous nitrite was fabricated by a one-pot hydrothermal method, and the transmission electron microscope, X-ray diffractometer, UV–Vis absorption spectrometer and fluorescence spectrophotometer were used to study the property of carbon dots. The fluorescent property of carbon dots influenced by the concentration of aqueous nitrite was studied. The interaction between the electron-donating functional groups and the electron-accepting nitrous acid could account for the quenching effect on carbon dots by adding aqueous nitrite. The products of the hydrolysis of aqueous nitrite performed a stronger quenching effect at lower pH. The relationship between the relative fluorescence intensity of carbon dots and the concentration of nitrite was described by the Stern–Volmer equation ( I 0 / I − 1 = 0.046[ Q ]) with a fine linearity ( R 2 = 0.99). The carbon dots-based probe provides a convenient method for the detection of nitrite concentration.

Abstract:As an antioxidant and preservative agent, nitrite (NO2-) plays an essential role in the food industry to maintain freshness or inhibit microbial growth. However, excessive addition of NO2- is detrimental to health, so accurate and portable detection of NO2- is critical for food quality control. Notably, the selectivity of most carbon dots (CDs)-based fluorescence sensors was not enough due to the nonspecific interaction mechanism of hydrogen bond, electrostatic interaction and inner filter effect etc. Herein, a novel fluorescence/UV-vis absorption (FL/UV-vis) dual-mode sensor was developed on basis of mC-CDs, which were prepared by simple solvothermal treatment of m-Phenylenediamine (m-PDA) and cyanidin cation (CC). The fluorescence of these mC-CDs could be selectively responded by NO2- through the specific diazo coupling reaction between NO2- and amino groups on the surface of mC-CDs, thus effectively improving the selectivity of NO2- detection. The CDs-based fluorescence sensor possessed a low detection limit of 0.091 μM and 0.143 μM for FL and UV-vis methods and the excellent linear range of 0.0-60.0 μM. Furthermore, the mC-CDs sensor was employed to detect NO2- in real samples with a recovery rate of 97.11 %-104.15 % for quantitative addition. Moreover, the smartphone-assisted fluorescence sensing platform developed could identify the subtle color changes that could not be distinguished by the naked eye, and had the advantages of fast detection speed and intelligence. More importantly, the portable solid phase sensor based on mC-CDs had been successfully applied to the specific fluorescence identification and concentration monitoring of NO2-. Accordingly, the designed sensor provided a new strategy for the highly selective and convenient sensing of NO2- in food substrates, and paved the way for the wide application of CDs-based nanomaterials in the detection of food safety.

Abstract:Nitrite and sulfite play important roles in human health and environmental science, so it is desired to develop a facile and efficient method to evaluate NO 2 - and SO 3 2- concentrations. In this article, the use of green alternatives with the potential of multi-functionality has been synthesized to detect nitrite and sulfite based on fluorescent probe. The carbon dots (CDs) with starch as only raw materials show fluorescence turn “on-off-on” response towards NO 2 - and SO 3 2- with the limits of detection of 0.425 and 0.243 μМ, respectively. Once nitrite was present in the solution, the fluorescence of CDs was quenched rapidly due to the charge transfer. When sulfite was introduced, the quenching fluorescence of CDs was effectively recovered because of the redox reaction between NO 2 - and SO 3 2- , and thus providing a new way for NO 2 - and SO 3 2- detection. Owing to their excellent analytical characteristics and low cytotoxicity, the “on-off-on” sensor was successfully employed for intracellular bioimaging of NO 2 - and SO 3 2- .

Abstract:In this research, we successfully developed a green, economical and effective one–step hydrothermal method for the synthesis of fluorescent nitrogen–doped carbon dots (N–CDs) by utilizing fresh tea leaves and urea as the carbon and nitrogen sources, respectively. The obtained N–CDs were characterized by TEM, XPS and FT–IR. We found that the N–CDs were near–spherical with an average size of about 2.32 nm, and contained abundant oxygen and nitrogen functional groups. The N–CDs exhibited bright blue fluorescence under ultraviolet illumination, with the maximum emission at 455 nm. Meanwhile, the as–prepared N–CDs could be selectively quenched by Fe3+ ions. The quenching of N–CDs is linearly correlated with the concentration of Fe3+ in the range of 0.1–400 μM with a low detection limit of 0.079 μM. Significantly, the N–CDs present excellent biocompatibility and high photostability. The results also depict that multicolor fluorescence is displayed under a fluorescence microscope and successfully applied for the detection of intracellular Fe3+. To sum up, the fluorescent N–CDs are expected to be a sensitive detection probe for Fe3+ in biological systems.

Abstract:Tunable multicolor carbon dots (CDs) with a quantum yield reach up to 35% were generated directly from rhodamine and urea via one-step hydrothermal approach and purified through silica gel column chromatography. Transmission electron microscopy images reveal that the as-prepared CDs possess a small size distribution below 10 nm with bright blue, green, and yellow color emission, designated as b-CDs, g-CDs, and y-CDs, respectively. The in-depth investigations reveal that the multicolor emission CDs with different fraction displays fluorescence emission wavelength ranges from 398 nm (b-CDs), 525 nm (g-CDs), to 553 nm (y-CDs) which could be well modulated by controlling the amount of heteroatom nitrogen especially amino nitrogen onto their surface structures. Further experiments verify the important role of nitrogen content by using rhodamine solely or substituting urea with sulfur containing compounds as precursors to produce corresponding CDs since the performance is lower than that of urea incorporation. Theoretical calculation results also reveal that the increasing amount of amino nitrogen into their surface structures of b-CDs, g-CDs to y-CDs is responsible for reduced band gaps energy, which result in the redshifted wavelength. Benefiting from the excellent photoluminescence properties, wide pH variation range, high photo stability, and low toxicity, these CDs were employed for HClO sensing at 553 nm within the range 5 to 140 μM with a limit of detection (LOD) of 0.27 ± 0.025 μM (n = 3) and multicolor cellular imaging in HeLa cells.

Abstract:A facile, green, and high-output hydrothermal synthesis was proposed for the fabrication of highly fluorescent nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-doped CDs). The nitrogen content in N-doped CDs reached 19.2% and demonstrated strong blue fluorescence emission was obtained with fluorescence quantum yield (QY) of up to 32.9%, which exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield, high photostability, and excellent biocompatibility. The N-doped CDs possess high photostability, low toxicity, and excellent biocompatibility, based on which the N-doped CDs were successfully applied as a fluorescence probe for cell imaging. Moreover, it was then successfully demonstrated for sensitive and selective detection of Fe 3+ in serum.

Abstract:A novel nitrogen-doped carbon dot (N-CD) was synthesized via carbonization of citric acid in the presence of triethylenetetramine as a nitrogen source. The average size of the N-doped CDs and also the quantum yield of the synthesized N-doped CDs were both estimated to be 9 ± 2 nm and 39.5%, respectively. The applications of the synthesized carbon nanostructure as a high quantum yield fluorescence probe were initially adopted in the fabrication of a novel optical pH (acidity) sensor in both aqueous and nonaqueous environments. Two optimum dynamic intervals were obtained with the ranges of1.5-5.0 and 7.0-10.0. for the fabricated pH sensor with a standard deviation of 0.09 pH (n = 4). The quantity of HClO4 inside acetic acid was determined as the degree of acidity with a linear range between 1.0 and 4.0%. Determination of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) based on the fluorescence quenching of N-CDs was also evaluated in detail. The linear ranges for NO2- and NO3- species were estimated to be from 1 × 10-7to 7.5 × 10-5 and from 2.5 × 10-6 to 7.5 × 10-4 mol L-1, respectively with RSD of 3.69% (n = 5) for NO2- and 3.54% (n = 5) for NO3-. The LODs (X+3Sb) for both NO2- and NO3- were estimated to be 2.5 × 10-8 and 7.5 × 10-7 mol L-1, respectively. The synthesized N-CDs were also applicable for NOX recognition in the gaseous form at part per thousand (ppt) levels with linear ranges of 3.77-36.51 and 27.67-43.77 ppt, LOD (X+3Sb) of 1.41 ppt (n = 4) and RSD of 4.37% (n = 5). The reliability of these methods was also evaluated via the analyses of different forms of gaseous, water and rumen samples.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) also nitrogen-doped CDs (N-CDs) were produced by green hydrothermal synthesis using Pea and ethanediamine as the carbon and nitrogen source, separately. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) images displayed that the prepared CDs and N-CDs were well dispersed, had a spherical morphology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) figures of CDs and N-CDs presented a graphitic amorphous structure. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) verified that CDs and N-CDs carried many different hydrophilic groups (for example hydroxyl, carboxyl/carbonyl, amide, amino groups) on the surface, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) together verified this result. However, the optical properties and fluorescence quantum yield for N-CDs were obviously superior to those of CDs. Furthermore, the prepared N-CDs displayed outstanding advantages including low toxicity, satisfactory biocompatibility, and excellent chemical stability. More prominently, the prepared N-CDs could detect Hg2+ ions with high sensitivity and selectivity in both water samples and HeLa cells.

Abstract:A green one‐step hydrothermal method has been successfully used to prepare carbon dots (CDs) by selectively co‐doping nitrogen, phosphorus and sulphur elements. For the sensitive detection of iron ions, a fluorescence quencher sensor based on nitrogen‐ and sulphur‐doped carbon dots (red NS‐CDs) has been developed, because of the good optical properties and bio‐histocompatibility of green NPS‐CDs and blue NP‐CDs, They are observed to penetrate NCl−H292 cells, fluorescing green and localizing in the cytoplasm. Carbon dots (CDs) with tunable photoluminescence was successfully prepared via selective co‐doping of three elements, including nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur element by green one‐step hydrothermal method. Nitrogen‐sulfur‐doped CDs (red NS‐CDs), which emitted red fluorescence under UV excitation, were used to detect iron ions in the linear range 1–50 μM, yielding detectable limits as low as 94 nM. The nitrogen‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (blue NP‐CDs) exhibited blue fluorescence with quantum yields up to 34.5 %. When the concentration is 800 μg/mL, it showed excellent anticancer effect in vitro. The nitrogen‐sulfur‐phosphorus‐doped CDs (green NPS‐CDs) emitting green fluorescence showed a low cytotoxicity at a high concentration of 800 μg/mL and were used for intracelluar imaging of NCl−H292 cells. This study demonstrated the photoluminescent characteristics of carbon dots (CDs) and highlighted the ability to modify their peak fluorescence emission wavelengths through the flexible combination of specific reagents under comparable hydrothermal conditions. Additionally, it provided valuable insights into the efficient methodologies for synthesizing CDs suitable for various application scenarios.

Abstract:CD-based ratiometric fluorescence probes are of great significance for visual detection, but accomplishing this goal is still a particularly challenging task. Herein, nitrogen-doped carbon dots (NCDs) with bright yellow fluorescence were easily manufactured via a one-pot hydrothermal method for visual detection of hypochlorite (ClO − ) and thiosulfate (S 2 O 3 2− ) under UV light irradiation. The as-prepared NCDs demonstrate favorable water solubility, excellent biocompatibility, superior optical properties and low cytotoxicity. Strikingly, the fluorescence of the NCDs could be quenched with ClO − . Based on these results, an original fluorescent nanoprobe was constructed for the highly discriminating recognition of ClO − by oxidation of the amino groups on their surface to nitro groups. The assay covered the ranges from 0.067 to 19.33 μM and 24 to 98 μM with a limit of detection (S/N = 3) of as low as 0.013 μM. Remarkably, a growing peak appears at 537 nm and the emission at 492 nm shrinks with the introduction of S 2 O 3 2− , which demonstrates ratiometric fluorescence emission characteristics ( F 537nm / F 492nm ) in the range of 6.6–100 μM with a limit of detection (S/N = 3) of as low as 0.78 μM. In addition, the fluorescence color of the NCDs also changes (yellow-green-blue) after adding various ClO − concentrations. The fluorescence color of the NCDs–ClO − also changes (blue-green-yellow) after adding various S 2 O 3 2− concentrations. This excellent ratiometric fluorescence probe was successfully further used for nuclear imaging. Accordingly, an easy-to-prepare paper-based sensor to identify ClO − and S 2 O 3 2− was fabricated, which demonstrated their adaptability for in situ on-site testing. This research further opens up new opportunities for the development of efficient yellow fluorescent probes based on NCDs nanomaterials for visual detection, biomarking, and biomedical optical imaging.

Abstract:Nitrite ion is one of the materials widely used in human life, and the accurate, sensitive and stable detection of nitrite ions is of great significance to people's healthy life. In this study, nitrogen-doped fluorescent carbon dots (N-CDs) for detecting nitrite salt solutions were prepared using citric acid monohydrate and Chrysoidin as precursors through a one-pot hydrothermal method. Under the condition of pH = 3, a noticeable quenching phenomenon occurred in the carbon dot solution with the increase in nitrite ion concentration. This quenching effect might be attributed to the diazonium effect. N-CDs have been successfully used as fluorescence probes for NO 2 − detection. NO 2 − can effectively quench the fluorescence intensity of N-CDs, providing a linear response to fluorescence quenching efficiency with respect to NO 2 − concentration within the range of 0–10μM and 10–30μM, and a detection limit of 52nM, showing high sensitivity. In addition, the probe was applied to the determination of NO 2 − in ham sausage samples with a detection limit of 0.67μM and recoveries in the range of 99.5-102.3%, the fluorescent probe showed satisfactory reliability.

Abstract:Carbon quantum dots (CQDs), owing to their characteristic luminescent properties, have become a new favorite in the field of luminescence. They have been widely used in light emitting diode, ion detection, cell-imaging, ect. Herein a facile synthesis method of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N-CQDs) has been developedviaa one-step hydrothermal of glucose and m-phenylenediamine. The chemical composition, surface functional groups, and crystal structure of so prepared N-CQDs were systematically characterized. The characterizations indicate that nitrogen has been chemically doped in the CQDs and the N-CQDs crystallize in a graphene structure. Photoluminescence (PL) measurements show that the N-CQDs emit strong blue emission under the irradiation of ultraviolet. The emission is excitation-dependent, is resistant to photo bleaching and high ionic strength, and slightly decreases with the increase of temperature. The quantum yield of them is about 17.5%. The PL intensity of N-CQDs quenches linearly with the increase of the concentrations of Fe3+(0.5-1.0 mM) and CrO42-(0.3-0.6 mM), which are a kind of excellent fluorescent probe for the detection of Fe3+ and CrO42-. The quenching mechanism of Fe3+ and CrO42-is verified to be a static quenching mechanism based on inner filter effect. The N-CQDs are also found to be a good cell-imaging reagent of Hela cells.

Abstract:Developing an effective and convenient nitrite detection method is indispensable in food safety, environmental monitoring, clinical diagnosis of diseases, and many other areas. Herein, a dicyanoisophorone derivative, TMN-NH2 with large Stokes shift and near-infrared (NIR) emission, was proposed as a ratiometric fluorescence and colorimetric dual-mode probe for the rapid determination of NO2- in acidic media, showing excellent selectivity and high sensitivity. The sensing mechanism is based on the diazotization of TMN-NH2 with NO2- and subsequent diazonium salt hydrolysis to form a hydroxyl-substituted product (TMN-OH). Under the optimized conditions of reaction and detection, a new quantitative analysis method based on TMN-NH2 was established for NO2- detection, exhibiting good linear relationships to NO2- in the range of 0.5 to 15 μM with practical detection limits of 26.6 nM and 17.6 nM for the colorimetric and fluorescent readout, respectively. The quantitative detection of NO2- in real samples demonstrated satisfactory recoveries and repeatability. Moreover, TMN-NH2 was successfully applied for monitoring NO2- in Escherichia coli by confocal fluorescence imaging.

Abstract:Developing reliable nitrite (NO2-) sensors is essential for food safety and reducing health risks from NO2- exposure. In this study, we strategically designed nitrogen-doped carbon dot (N-CD) nanozymes to establish an accessible dual-signal ratiometric sensing system for detecting NO2- in food matrices. This system utilizes the photoluminescence and enzyme-like properties of N-CD nanozymes combined with NO2--triggered diazotization reactions of substrates such as o-phenylenediamine (OPD) or 3,3',5,5'-tetramethylbenzidine (TMB). The resulting N-CD/OPD and N-CD/TMB composites provide dual-mode detection-fluorescence and colorimetric-with high selectivity for NO2- and excellent resistance to interference. These sensors exhibit clear color changes under both ultraviolet and visible light, and can be combined with smartphones for visual, on-site detection of NO2-. By incorporating a ratiometric strategy, dual-signal output, and smartphone compatibility, our system achieved a low detection limit (≤ 1.92 μM) and satisfactory recovery rates (85.6-115 %) in environmental water and food samples. This highlights the potential of smartphone-assisted sensors for environmental monitoring and food safety applications. Our carbon dot-based platform offers a practical and effective solution for on-site NO2- detection, contributing valuable insights to the field.
