Abstract:For the purpose of turning waste into treasure, Acid Orange 7 (AO7), a common azo dye, has been explored as a precursor to synthesize carbon nanodots (CNDs) by a simple, green and economical route, without utilization of strong acids or other oxidizers. Detailed characterization of the synthesized CNDs exhibits its good water dispersibility, with a mean particle size of 3.54 nm and thickness of 0.5-1.6 nm (2-4 layers). Importantly, the much-reduced biotoxicity and excellent fluorescence properties of the synthesized CNDs confer its further potential applications in both bioimaging and selective detection of Fe3+ ions.

Abstract:Nanoscale carbon particles have emerged as versatile precursors for a new class of highly fluorescent nanomaterials that resemble semiconductor quantum dots. The surface-passivated fluorescent carbon nanoparticles, dubbed ‘carbon dots’, were already demonstrated for their potential optical bioimaging applications in vitro and in vivo. In this study, we conducted a systematic cytotoxicity evaluation on the carbon dots prepared by various combinations of precursor carbon nanoparticles and molecules for the particle surface functionalization. The results suggested that the cytotoxicity of carbon dots was dependent on the selection of surface passivation molecules. Those dots showing more significant cytotoxicity at higher concentrations were also evaluated for their effects on the fluorescence imaging of live cells. The implications of the results on the eventual use of carbon dots as cell imaging agents are discussed.

Abstract:Sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly biomass waste can be exploited for large-scale production of carbon nanomaterials. Here, alkali lignin was employed as a precursor to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with bright green fluorescence through a simple one-pot route. The prepared CQDs had a size of 1.5-3.5 nm, were water-dispersible, and showed wonderful biocompatibility, in addition to their excellent photoluminescence and electrocatalysis properties. These high-quality CQDs could be used in a wide range of applications such as metal-ion detection, cell imaging, and electrocatalysis. The wide range of biomass lignin feedstocks provide a green, low-cost, and viable strategy for producing high-quality fluorescent CQDs and enable the conversion of biomass waste into high-value products that promote sustainable development of the economy and human society.

Abstract:Bio-waste is a side product of biomedical research containing carbon, which can be utilized for developing carbon dots (CDs). CDs are known to be useful for a variety of applications because of their unique photoluminescence, low toxicity, and straightforward synthesis. In this paper, we employed a one-step hydrothermal method to prepare CDs from bio-waste as the only reactant. The as-synthesized Cell-CDs were found to be chemically stable and biocompatible. In addition, the spectra of Cell-CDs' emissions covered the visible light, which is ideal for super-resolution imaging. Particularly, dual-color imaging can be achieved, for example, by staining the plasma membrane with Cell-CDs emitting one color and staining cytosolic organelles with Cell-CDs emitting a different color of fluorescence. Here, we demonstrate such applications by studying the subcellular dynamics of live cells.

Abstract:Fluorescent red-emissive carbon dots (RCDs) were synthesized using the solvothermal method with citric acid as a carbon source, N , N -dimethylformamide as a nitrogen source, and formamide as a solvent. The as-synthesized RCDs show red fluorescence in an aqueous solution and have an excellent stability towards photobleaching as well as extremely low cytotoxicity and are successfully used for cell and zebrafish imaging. The results indicate that RCDs have potential applications in both in vitro and in vivo bioimaging.

Abstract:Red-emitting carbon dots have attracted much attention because of their excellent fluorescence properties. It is of great significance to synthesize red-emitting carbon dots with high fluorescence quantum yield. Herein, by using citric acid and 1,8-diaminonaphthalene as precursors in N, N-dimethylformamide, novel carbon dots (NC-CDs) exhibiting red emission at 607 nm upon excitation at 514 nm were synthesized via a solvent-thermal approach. NC-CDs aggregated in lipid droplets of cells, and hemin quenched their fluorescence. Subsequently, cationic surfactants cetyltrimethylammonium bromide, anionic surfactants sodium dodecyl sulfate and nonionic surfactants were used to functionalize the NC-CDs. The results indicated that both ionic surfactants increased the fluorescence quantum yield and solubility of NC-CDs with extended fluorescence lifetime. This approach is applicable to a class of carbon dots that possess both carboxyl and amino groups. Additionally, these functionalized NC-CDs exhibited high recognition sensitivity towards ClO− and Cu2+ respectively except for hemin. This study provides a novel approach for the synthesis of highly red-emitting carbon dots, expanding their applications in the field of biological imaging and sensing. The findings hold significant implications for the real-time monitoring of hemin in lipid droplets. Additionally, this work offers a simple method to dramatic enhance their fluorescence quantum yield.

Abstract:We report an eco-friendly strategy for fabrication of nitrogen -doped carbon nanodots (N-CDs) and demonstrate their applications for multicolor cell imaging, patterning, and biosensing. N-CDs have been synthesized using wool as raw material via pyrolysis and microwave treatment, providing a green way for the production of N-CDs without the use of toxic/expensive solvents and starting materials. The prepared N-CDs exhibit exceptional advantages including high fluorescent quantum yield (22.5%), excellent biocompatibility, low toxicity, and satisfactory chemical stability. Depending on these superior properties, the N-CDs have been applied in multicolor bioimaging, patterning, and biosensing. Imaging of living cells has been observed with high resolution using N-CDs as a probe, which validates their use in imaging applications and their multicolor property in the living cell system. Additionally, the obtained N -CDs have been used as fluorescent inks for drawing luminescent patterns, showing favorable application in anti counterfeit and optoelectronic dimensions. Most strikingly, the as-prepared N-CDs could visualize Fe3' fluctuations in living cells with negligible autofluorescence based on their high sensitivity and selectivity detection for Fe3+ ions with a linear range of 0.1-10 OA and a detection limit of 10 nM. Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:We have developed a novel eco-friendly approach involving hydrazine hydrate-assisted hydrothermal cutting followed by functionalization with poly (ethylene imine) (PEI) for fabricating highly fluorescent graphene quantum dots from coffee grounds. The PEI-functionalized graphene quantum dots exhibit enhanced band-edge photoluminescence with single exponential decay. Their preliminary applications in bioimaging and sensing of heavy metals have been demonstrated.

Abstract:We propose an ingenious method for synthesizing cross-linked hollow fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (HFCNs) with green emission by simply mixing acetic acid, water, and diphosphorus pentoxide. This is an automatic method without external heat treatment to rapidly produce large quantities of HFCNs, in contrast to other syntheses of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles that required high temperature, complicated operations, or long reaction times. Characterizations of HFCNs through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared/Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction indicate that abundant small oxygenous graphite domains existed and endowed the HFCNs with fluorescent properties. After simple post-treatments, the cross-linked HFCNs can be used for cell-imaging applications. Compared with traditional dyes and CdTe quantum dots, HFCNs are the superior fluorescent bioimaging agent according to their low toxicity, stability, and resistance to photobleaching. The HFCNs were also applied to watermark ink and fluorescent powder, showing their promising potentials for further wide usage.

Abstract:We report a facile and eco-friendly strategy for the fabrication of green fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs), and demonstrate their applications for bio-imaging, patterning, and staining. A one-pot hydrothermal method using various plant petals yields bright green-emitting CDs, providing an easy way for the production of green fluorescent CDs without the need for a tedious synthetic methodology or the use of toxic/expensive solvents and starting materials. The as-prepared CDs show small size distribution and excellent dispersibility. Their strong green fluorescence is observed when the excitation wavelength is between 430 nm and 490 nm. Moreover, they exhibit high tolerance to various external conditions, such as pH values, external cations, and continuous excitation. Due to minimum toxicity as well as good photoluminescence properties, these CDs can be applied to in vitro and in vivo imaging, patterning, and staining. According to confocal fluorescence imaging of human uterine cervical squamous cell carcinoma cells, CDs penetrate into the cell and enter the cytoplasm and the nucleus. More strikingly, carp is directly fed with CDs for in vivo imaging and shows bright green fluorescence at an excitation wavelength of 470 nm. In addition, the obtained CDs are used as fluorescent inks for drawing luminescence patterns. Finally, we also apply the CDs as a fluorescent dye. Interestingly, the absorbent filter paper with staining emits dramatic fluorescence under 470 nm excitation.
Recycling Synthetic Route to Full-Color Fluorescent Carbon Nanodots

Abstract:In the process of commercialization, it is critical to develop appropriate routes to decrease the pollution and the cost for preparing and purifying carbon nanomaterials in a large scale. Here, a low-pollution and recyclable approach has been developed to synthesize fluorescent carbon nanodots (CDs). In this route, citric acid and urea were used as precursors and N,N-diethylformamide (DMF) was used as the solvent and eluent for the solvent-thermal polymerization of CDs and the separation of different emissive CDs in chromatography. The unreacted precursors (citric acid and urea), effluent, and DMF reclaimed from the evaporated CD solution were separately reused as the reaction source and the eluent for the next cycle preparation process. In this way, CDs with their emission wavelength covering the full visible region have been synthesized. The CDs exhibit good biocompatibility and can be used for full-color fluorescent down-conversion films and high-contrast cellular bioimaging through single-photon or two-photon excitation. This work provides an environmental-friendly route to fluorescent CDs, which is essential for future industrial mass production, and thus may push forward their applications.

Abstract:This study delves into the green synthesis and multifaceted applications of three types of carbon quantum dots (CQDs), namely, CQDs-1, CQDs-2, and CQDs-3. These CQDs were innovatively produced through a gentle pyrolysis process from distinct plant-based precursors: genipin with glucose for CQDs-1, genipin with extracted gardenia seeds for CQDs-2, and genipin with whole gardenia seeds for CQDs-3. Advanced analytical techniques, including X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), were employed to detail the CQDs' structural and surface characteristics, revealing their unique functional groups and surface chemistries. The study further explores the CQDs' bioimaging potential, where confocal fluorescence microscopy evidenced their swift uptake by Escherichia coli bacteria, indicating their suitability for bacterial imaging. These CQDs were also applied in the synthesis of gold nanoparticles (AuNPs), acting as reducing agents and stabilizers. Among these, CQD3-AuNPs were distinguished by their remarkable stability and catalytic efficiency, achieving a 99.7% reduction of 4-nitrophenol to 4-aminophenol in just 10 min and maintaining near-complete reduction efficiency (99.6%) after 60 days. This performance notably surpasses that of AuNPs synthesized using sodium citrate, underscoring the exceptional capabilities of CQD3-AuNPs. These insights pave the way for leveraging CQDs and CQD-stabilized AuNPs in bacterial imaging and catalysis, presenting valuable directions for future scientific inquiry and practical applications.

Abstract:Waste utilization is not only the protection of the environment and the practice of green chemistry, but also one of the ways to develop new materials. Herein, we report two biomass carbon dots which prepared from bee pollen waste by one-step hydrothermal method. The new two carbon dots were used in sensing, cell imaging and plant growth regulation. The differences in the structure and properties of the two carbon dots were evaluated by TEM, XPS, TG and various spectroscopic methods. Both two carbon dots contain abundant functional groups, polyatomic doping, excellent water solubility and stable photoluminescence. Due to these good properties, we have demonstrated its versatile applications in Fe3+ sensing, cell imaging and plant growth regulation. It shows sensitive and specific Fe3+ responsiveness and good biocompatibility. This research provides a green and simple method for the recycling and reuse of bee pollen waste, and also provides a reference for the application of biomass carbon dots.

Abstract:Safely recycling high-performance fluorescent materials from waste is an appealing route to reduce environmental pollution. This work presents one facile approach to massively producing high-performance carbon nanodots (CNDs) from discarded cooked eggshells. The obtained CND solution exhibits two excitation-independent deep-red emission peaks at 632 and 700 nm with a high photoluminescence quantum yield of 19.98% and a narrow full width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 16.2 nm. The deep-red emission of the CNDs originates from the porphyrin-like structure in the CNDs, which are formed in the eggshells and further carbonized by cooking. In addition, the deep-red emission and unprecedented narrow FWHM of the CNDs deliver promising applications in bioimaging as an imaging agent. The recycled deep-red emissive CNDs pave a new strategy to design nanomaterials from biomass and provide a novel green pathway to recycle high-performance fluorescent nanomaterials sustainably.

Abstract:Red/NIR carbon dots (C-dots) have obtained enormous interest in last decade thanks to their significant potentials in the biomedical fields . In this article, recent advancements on the synthesis approaches and carbon precursors for red/NIR C-dots preparation are comprehensively elaborated. Then reports on the fluorescence mechanism and emission manipulation of red/NIR C-dots are carefully discussed and highlighted. Furthermore, the recent progress of red/NIR C-dots for their biomedical applications are also closely surveyed. Last, perspective on the future trends of red/NIR C-dots is carefully proposed.

Abstract:Turning waste into wealth, herein, two highly fluorescent N and S co-doped carbon dots (N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B) were synthesized by the hydrothermal reaction of contaminant reactive red 2 (RR2) and L-cysteine or L-methionine, respectively. The detailed morphology and structure of N, S-CDs were characterized by XRD, Raman spectrum, FTIR spectra, TEM, HRTEM, AFM and XPS. The maximum fluorescent of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B are 565 and 615 nm under different excitation wavelengths with moderate fluorescence intensity of 14.0 % and 6.3 %, respectively. The microstructure models of N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B, which were induced by FT-IR, XPS and element analysis, had been applied in DFT calculation. The result indicated that the doping of S and N is beneficial to obtain the red-shift of fluorescent spectra. Both N, S-CDs-A and N, S-CDs-B showed highly sensitive and selective to Fe3+. N, S-CDs-A can also detect Al3+ ion with high sensitivity and selectivity. Finally, N, S-CDs-B was successfully applied in cell imaging.

Abstract:In the context of the circular economy and decreasing earth resources, waste should be converted into value-added materials such as carbon quantum dots, which are fluorescent nanomaterials with promising applications in sensing, biological imaging, energy storage, and photocatalysis. Here, we review carbon quantum dots with focus on their synthesis from biomass, factors controlling their performance, properties, and applications in energy, medicine, and environmental science.
