Abstract:Herein, bright green luminescent graphitic carbon nitride quantum dots (GCNQDs) doped with oxygen and sulfur are prepared simply by microwave treatment of citric acid and thiourea. The as -obtained GCNQDs show excitation wavelength and pH dependent luminescence behaviors in the visible range. Besides, the GCNQDs exhibit high fluorescence quantum yield (31.67%), strong resistance to the interference of high ionic strength environment, and good biocompatibility as demonstrated by the cell viability assay. Thus, the resulting GCNQDs can be used as a promising fluorescent probe for HeLa cell imaging with low cytotoxicity, and have great potential in bioanalysis and related fields. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. A Solvent-Engineered Molecule Fusion Strategy for Rational Synthesis of Carbon Quantum Dots with Multicolor Bandgap Fluorescence

Abstract:We report a rational strategy for scalable production of highly fluorescent CQDs in high yields (50-92%) based on controlled molecule fusion of activated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon in environmentally friendly polar solvents. By simply varying the composition of reaction solvents, their bandgaps were systematically manipulated, enabling the adjustment of fluorescent emissions from blue to red. Similar to conventional organic-soluble quantum dots but distinct from extensively reported water-soluble CQDs, the CQDs engineered in polar solvents are highly soluble in organic solvents and possess main features of intrinsic bandgap transitions, including overlapping of absorption and excitation spectra, excitation-independence fluorescence, the inversely proportional relationship of the bandgaps with fluorescence peak wavelength, and mono-exponential fluorescence decay. What's more, the red-fluorescent CQDs were encapsulated by liposomes, providing good biocompatibility and excellent in vitro and in vivo imaging capabilities. (C) 2017 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract:The findings of the research indicate that coal-derived carbon dots (CDs), produced through top-down methods, exist as a blend of graphene quantum dots (GQDs), carbon quantum dots (CQDs), and carbon nanodots (CNDs). Within this mixture, numerous individual particles are dispersed, each containing multiple sp(2)-carbon 2-carbon domains, suggesting the presence of multiple fluorescent centers of varying sizes. These fluorescent centers scatter photon energy, leading to a wide full width at half maximum (FWHM >80 nm). To tackle this issue, the study significantly improves the fluorescence efficiency of coal-based CDs by employing a nitrogen-doping approach. Additionally, these nitrogen-doped CDs are combined with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) to formulate secure inks exhibiting solid-state fluorescence and room-temperature phosphorescence (RTP) properties, showcasing their potential for anti-counterfeiting applications in safeguarding important documents and artworks.

Abstract:N-rich metal-free and metal-doped carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have been prepared through one-step hydrothermal method using tetraphenylporphyrin or its transition metal (Pd or Pt) complex as precursor. The structures and morphology of the as-prepared nanoparticles were analyzed by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and Fourier transform infrared spectra. Three kinds of nanocomposites show similar structures except for the presence of metal ions in Pd-CQDs and Pt-CQDs indicated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. All of them display bright blue emission upon exposure to ultraviolet irradiation. The CQDs exhibit typical excitation-dependent emission behavior, with the emission quantum yield of 10.1%, 17.8%, and 15.2% for CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs, respectively. Moreover, the CQDs, Pd-CQDs, and Pt-CQDs could serve as fluorescent probes for the specific and sensitive detection of Fe3+ ions in aqueous solution. The low cytotoxicity of CQDs is demonstrated by MTT assay against HeLa cells. Therefore, the CQDs can be used as efficient probes for cellular multicolor imaging and fluorescence sensors for the detection of Fe3+ ions due to their low toxicity, excellent biocompatibility, and low detection limits. This work provides a new route to synthesize highly luminescent N-rich metal-free or metal-doped CQDs for multifunctional applications.

Abstract:The intricate composition and structural of low-rank coal have hindered its broad utilization in the field of material science. The study utilized an alkaline hydrothermal method to enhance the depolymerization of long-flame coal and achieve the purification of fluorescent carbon dots for the first time, which were then being employed for the trace detection of Cu 2+ or Fe 3+ ions. The carbon extraction efficiency reached 58 %, with the carbon dots averaging size of 1.36 ± 0.42 nm, the sp 2 hybridized structure of the carbon dots indicated successfully purification under alkaline conditions. After reduction with sodium borohydride, defects in the core region of the carbon dots were repaired, and the C = O functional groups were transformed into O–H groups, leading to an increase in fluorescence intensity. At a concentration of 0.25 g/L of carbon dots, demonstrated high emission intensity at both long and low emission wavelengths, which can be used as LED luminescent material. Furthermore, the application of these carbon dots in detecting heavy metal ions (Cu 2+ , Fe 3+ ) in aqueous solutions was explored, showing as low as detection limit of ∼ 0.04 μM. This study achieved higher depolymerization of coal and purification of fluorescent carbon dots for use in probe-based detection, providing fresh perspectives on the high-value utilization of low-rank coal.

Abstract:Based on the self-passivation function of chitosan, an efficient, and green synthesis strategy was applied to prepare chitosan carbon dots (CDs). The quantum yield of carbon dots reached 35% under the conditions of hydrothermal temperature of 200 °C, hydrothermal time of 5 h, and chitosan concentration of 2%. Moreover, the obtained carbon dots had high selectivity and sensitivity to Fe3+. Based on the Schiff base reaction between the aldehyde groups of dialdehyde cellulose nanofibrils (DNF) and the amino groups of CDs, a chemically cross-linked, novel, fluorescent composite film, with high transparency and high strength, was created using one-pot processing. Knowing that the fluorescence effect of the composite film on Fe3+ had a linear relationship in the concentration range of 0–100 μM, a fluorescent probe can be developed for quantitative analysis and detection of Fe3+. Owing to their excellent fluorescent and mechanical properties, the fluorescent nanocomposite films have potential applications in the fields of Fe3+ detection, fluorescent labeling, and biosensing.

Abstract:We propose an ingenious method for synthesizing cross-linked hollow fluorescent carbon nanoparticles (HFCNs) with green emission by simply mixing acetic acid, water, and diphosphorus pentoxide. This is an automatic method without external heat treatment to rapidly produce large quantities of HFCNs, in contrast to other syntheses of fluorescent carbon nanoparticles that required high temperature, complicated operations, or long reaction times. Characterizations of HFCNs through high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, infrared/Raman spectroscopy, and X-ray diffraction indicate that abundant small oxygenous graphite domains existed and endowed the HFCNs with fluorescent properties. After simple post-treatments, the cross-linked HFCNs can be used for cell-imaging applications. Compared with traditional dyes and CdTe quantum dots, HFCNs are the superior fluorescent bioimaging agent according to their low toxicity, stability, and resistance to photobleaching. The HFCNs were also applied to watermark ink and fluorescent powder, showing their promising potentials for further wide usage.

Abstract:Fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) with advantages including excellent biocompatibility, low cost, and easy modification make them highly promising for applications in biological imaging. Here, we successfully synthesized dark green fluorescent CDs (g-CDs) using trinitropyrene as a carbon source and 2,4-diaminobenzenesulfonic acid as the reactant in one-pot synthesis. The results revealed that the g-CDs had an average uniform particle size of 4.93 nm, with a structure similar to graphite. The g-CDs imparted excellent water-solubility due to the presence of hydrophilic groups. The g-CDs exhibited an optimal fluorescence emission wavelength of 512 nm in acetone solvent, with a maximum quantum yield of 38.4%. When transferred into a normal saline solution, the g-CDs retained their green fluorescence, with the optimal fluorescence emission wavelength shifting to 505 nm. Notably, we observed a significant increase in fluorescence intensity and maximum quantum yield of up to 79.4% when the g-CDs were dissolved in a polar solvent. Furthermore, in vitro fluorescence imaging experiments demonstrated rapid cell entry, excellent fluorescence performance, high biocompatibility, and universality of the g-CDs. These findings underscore the high hydrophobicity and biocompatibility of our newly designed g-CDs, thus highlighting their immense potential as fluorescent probes in bioimaging and disease tracing applications.

Abstract:Sustainable, inexpensive, and environmentally friendly biomass waste can be exploited for large-scale production of carbon nanomaterials. Here, alkali lignin was employed as a precursor to synthesize carbon quantum dots (CQDs) with bright green fluorescence through a simple one-pot route. The prepared CQDs had a size of 1.5-3.5 nm, were water-dispersible, and showed wonderful biocompatibility, in addition to their excellent photoluminescence and electrocatalysis properties. These high-quality CQDs could be used in a wide range of applications such as metal-ion detection, cell imaging, and electrocatalysis. The wide range of biomass lignin feedstocks provide a green, low-cost, and viable strategy for producing high-quality fluorescent CQDs and enable the conversion of biomass waste into high-value products that promote sustainable development of the economy and human society.

Abstract:Deep processing and functional applications of coal are important strategies to overcome the bottleneck of current coal applications. In recent years, the fluorescent carbon dots (CDs), a new member of the carbon nanomaterials family, have shown great application prospects in biological imaging, chemical sensing and photocatalysis owing to their excellent biocompatibility, non-toxicity, tunable fluorescence emission, outstanding energy storage performance and other unique properties. Coal and coal-derived materials contain large amounts of crystallite structure and condensed aromatic ring clusters, which are connected by the densely distributed carbon-oxygen bonds. The linkage can be broken by chemical, electrochemical or physical methods to obtain fluorescent CDs. Therefore, the coal and coal-derived materials with wide distribution, large reserves and low price are ideal source materials for preparation of CDs. Herein, we summarize the preparation methods of CDs from coal together with their merits and demerits. Meanwhile, the effects of the type of coal and coal-derived materials and preparation conditions on the properties of fluorescent CDs are analyzed. Furthermore, the properties and applications of coal-based CDs and their nanocomposites in chemical detection, biological imaging, photocatalysis are outlined with emphasis on theformation of heterogeneous structures in nanocomposites based on CDs. Finally, the future development of coal-based CDs is prospected. It is expected that this review will provide key information for the preparation and applications of coal-based CDs, thus providing an economical and sustainable choice for the comprehensive utilization of coal.

Abstract:We have demonstrated an easy chemical oxidation approach toward fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) using arc-synthesized carbon by-products. The as-synthesized CDs possess a strong excitation-independent photoluminescence emission located at ca. 502 nm and strong upconversion fluorescence under long wavelength radiation (from 900 to 550 nm). Importantly, the CD-based device has been investigated and exhibits excellent photoresponse under UV irradiation, highlighting the potential for optoelectronic applications.

Abstract:A simple yet consequential modification was made to the popular carbonization processing of citric acid polyethylenimine precursor mixtures to produce carbon dots (CDots). The modification was primarily on pushing the carbonization processing a little harder at a higher temperature, such as the hydrothermal processing condition of around 330 degrees C for 6 h. The CDots thus produced are comparable in spectroscopic and other properties to those obtained in other more controlled syntheses including the deliberate chemical functionalization of pre-processed and selected small carbon nanoparticles, demonstrating the consistency in CDots and reaffirming their general definition as carbon nanoparticles with surface passivation by organic or other species. Equally significant is the finding that the modified processing of citric acid - polyethylenimine precursor mixtures could yield CDots of record-setting fluorescence performance, approaching the upper limit of being quantitatively fluorescent. Thus, the reported work serves as a demonstration on not only the need in selecting the right processing conditions and its associated opportunities in one-pot syntheses of CDots, but also the feasibility in pursuing the preparation of quantitatively fluorescent CDots, which represents an important milestone in the development and understanding of these fluorescent carbon nanomaterials. Facile and Efficient Fabrication of Bandgap Tunable Carbon Quantum Dots Derived From Anthracite and Their Photoluminescence Properties

Abstract:Low-cost and earth-abundant coal has been considered to have a unique structural superiority as carbon sources of carbon quantum dots (CQDs). However, it is still difficult to obtain CQDs from raw coal due to its compactibility and lower reactivity, and the majority of the current coal-based CQDs usually emit green or blue fluorescence. Herein, a facile two-step oxidation approach (K2FeO4 pre-oxidation and H2O2 oxidation) was proposed to fabricate bandgap tunable CQDs from anthracite. The K2FeO4 pre-oxidation can not only weaken the non-bonding forces among coal molecules which cause the expansion of coal particles, but also form a large number of active sites on the surface of coal particles. The above effects make the bandgap tunable CQDs (blue, green, or yellow fluorescence) can be quickly obtained from anthracite within 1 h in the following H2O2 oxidation by simply adjusting the concentration of H2O2. All the as-prepared CQDs contain more than 30 at% oxygen, and the average diameters of which are <10 nm. The results also indicate that the high oxygen content only can create new energy states inside the band gap of CQDs with average diameter more than 3.2 ± 0.9 nm, which make the as-prepared CQDs emit green or yellow fluorescence.

Abstract:The desired control of size, structure, and optical properties of fluorescent carbon dots (CDs) is critical for understanding the fluorescence mechanism and exploring their potential application. Herein, a top-down strategy to chemically tailor the inexpensive coal to fluorescent CDs by a combined method of carbonization and acidic oxidation etching is reported. The size and optical properties of the as-made CDs are tuned by controlling the structures of graphitic crystallites in the starting precursor. The coal-derived CDs exhibit two different distinctive emission modes, where the intensity of the short-wavelength emission is significantly enhanced by partial reduction treatment. The evolution of the electronic structure and the surface states analysis show that two different types of fluorescence centers, nano-sized sp(2) carbon domains and surface defects, are responsible for the observed emission characteristics. The reduced CDs are demonstrated as an effective fluorescent sensing material for label-free and selective detection of Cu(II) ions with a detection limit as low as 2.0 nM, showing a great promise for real-world sensor applications.

Abstract:Carbon dots (CDs) shows great application potential with their unique and excellent performances. Coal and its derivatives are rich in aromatic ring structure, which is suitable for preparing CDs in microstructure. Coal burning dust from coal-fired power plants can be utilized as a rich resource to separate and extract CDs. It has been shown in our results that there have two main possible mechanisms for the formation of CDs in coal burning dust. One is the self-assembly of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons contained in coal or produced by incomplete combustion of coal. The other mechanism is that the bridge bonds linking different aromatic structures in coal are breaking which would form CDs with different functional groups when the coals are burning at high temperature. Under violet light excitation at 310-340 nm or red light at 610-640 nm, CDs extracted from coal burning dust can emit purple fluorescence around 410 nm. The mechanism of up-conversion fluorescence emission of CDs is due to a two-photon absorption process. The recycling of CDs from coal burning dust from coal-fired power plants are not only good to protect environment but also would be helpful for mass production of CDs.

Abstract:An economical idea was developed to synthesize fluorescent carbon quantum dots (CQDs) directly from the refluxing extraction of orange pericarp via a hydrothermal technique. Hydrothermal temperatures and times were adjusted to control the particle sizes and the quantum yields of the obtained CQDs. The as-prepared carbon quantum dots showed narrow particle size distribution, good water solubility, and acceptable fluorescence lifetimes. Due to their high stability, these obtained carbon quantum dots have great application potential in nano-biotechnology. Furthermore, carbon spheres with uniform morphology and size can be easily obtained as the reaction byproducts of this green synthesis process.

Converting coal pitch into CDs is a valuable avenue toward new applications of traditional fossil fuels. The obtained CDs derived from coal pitch usually exhibit blue emission. The obtained warm yellow-emissive CDs (y-CDs) show a broad emission from 400 to 800 nm range, with the maximum emission peak centered at similar to 600 nm. The red-shifted emission of y-CDs can be ascribed to the surface states with the improved extent of the pi-electron system caused by the post-hydrothermal treatment, which effectively increases the graphitization degree. The potential application of the obtained y-CDs as phosphors for a light-emitting diode (LED) is demonstrated. This study offers a feasible way to tailor the optical properties of CDs derived from coal pitch for wider applications.
