Abstract:Mesoporous polyetherimides are important high-performance polymers. Conventional strategies to prepare porous polyetherimides, and polyimide in general, are based on covalent organic framework or thermolysis of sacrificial polymers. The former produces micropores due to intrinsically crosslinked microstructures, and the latter results in macropores because of a blowing effect by the sacrificial polymers. The preparation of mesopores remains a challenge. Here we have prepared mesoporous polyetherimide films by hydrolyzing polylactide-b-polyetherimide-b-polylactide (AIA). Controlled by molecular weight and volume fraction of polylactide in AIA, the porous films exhibit an average pore width of 24 nm. The mesoporous polyetherimide films exhibit a storage modulus of ∼1 GPa at ambient temperatures. This work advances the chemistry of high-performance polymers and provides an alternative strategy to prepare mesoporous polymers, enabling potential use as high-performance membranes for separation, purification, and electrochemistry.

Abstract:Biodegradable poly(l-lactic acid)-poly(ethylene glycol)-poly(l-lactic acid) (PLLA-PEG-PLLA) copolymers were synthesized by ring-opening polymerization of l-lactide using dihydroxy PEG as the initiator. The effects of different PEG segments in the copolymers on the mechanical and permeative properties were investigated. It was determined that certain additions of PEG result in composition-dependent microphase separation structures with both PLLA and PEG blocks in the amorphous state. Amorphous PEGs with high CO2 affinity form gas passages that provide excellent CO2/O-2 permselectivity in such a nanostructure morphology. The gas permeability and permselectivity depend on the molecular weight and content of the PEG and are influenced by the temperature. Copolymers that have a higher molecular weight and content of PEG present better CO2 permeability at higher temperatures but provide better CO2/O-2 permselectivity at lower temperatures. In addition, the hydrophilic PEG segments improve the water vapor permeability of PLLA. Such biodegradable copolymers have great potential for use as fresh product packaging.
Thermally Stable and Mechanically Strong Mesoporous Films of Poly(ether Imide)-Based Triblock Copolymers

Abstract:Polymer films must be thermally stable and mechanically strong to operate durably under extreme conditions (e.g., high temperature and tension). Herein we report the preparation of mesoporous films from poly(4-vinylpyridine)-block-poly(ether imide)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP-b-PEI-b-P4VP) triblock copolymers. Owing to the high-performance engineering plastic PEI block, the mesoporous films are thermally stable up to 150 degrees C and show much higher mechanical strength than existing polystyrene-based films. Importantly, with a molecular weight of 27.7 kDa, the porous block copolymer films showed a tensile strength at break of 10.5 MPa and toughness of 0.68 MPa. The P4VP-b-PEI-b-P4VP films had predominant mesopores of tunable sizes and high specific surface areas, better than the commercial poly(ether sulfone) and polyamide films. The development of poly(ether imide)-based porous films provides an effective method for preparing thermally stable and mechanically strong membranes for extreme-condition operations.

Abstract:Thermally‐initiated living radical graft polymerization of poly(ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA) with ozone‐pretreated poly[N,N′‐(1,4‐phenylene)‐3,3′,4,4′‐benzophenonetetra‐carboxylic amic acid] (PAmA) via a reversible addition–fragmentation chain‐transfer (RAFT)‐mediated process was carried out. The chemical compositions and structures of the copolymers were characterized by nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and molecular weight measurements. The “living” character of the grafted PEGMA side chains was ascertained in the subsequent extension of the PEGMA side chains. Nanoporous low‐dielectric‐constant (low‐κ) polyimide (PI) films were prepared by thermal imidization of the PAmA graft copolymers under reduced argon pressure, followed by thermal decomposition of the side chains in air. The nanoporous PI films obtained from the RAFT‐mediated graft copolymers had well‐preserved PI backbones, porosity in the range of 5–17 %, and pore size in the range of 30–50 nm. The pores were smaller and the pore‐size distribution more uniform than those of the corresponding nanoporous PI films obtained via graft copolymers from conventional free‐radical processes. Dielectric constants approaching 2 were obtained for the nanoporous PI films prepared from the RAFT‐mediated graft copolymers.

Abstract:A novel approach to prepare a polyimide nanofoam was explored by using a polyimide precursor grafted with a labile poly(propylene glycol) (PPG) oligomer. The PPG-grafted polyimide precursor, poly((amic acid)-co-(amic ester)), was synthesized via partial esterification of poly(amic acid) derived from pyromellitic dianhydride (PMDA) and 4,4'-oxydianiline (ODA) with bromo-terminated poly(propylene glycol) in the presence of K2CO3 in hexamethylphosphoramide and N-methylpyrrolidone. The precursor polymer film was spin-coated onto a glass substrate, then imidized at 200degreesC under nitrogen, and subsequently the PPG graft was decomposed by heating the film at 300degreesC for 9 h in air, resulting in the PMDA/ODA polyimide nanofoam. The precursor polymers, polyimides and foamed polyimides were characterized by a variety of techniques including H-1-NMR spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and thermogravimetric analysis (TGA). The homogeneously distributed nano-sized pores of 20-40 nm were observed by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of the foamed polyimide. (C) 2004 Society of Chemical Industry.

Abstract:Porous polyimide hybrid films with ultralow dielectric constant and dissipation loss were synthesized during chemical imidization and rapid evaporation of polymer solutions. Polyimide (PI) of bis(4-aminophenyl)-1,4-diisopropylbenzene (BISP) and 4,4′-(hexafluoroisopropylidene) diphthalic anhydride (6FDA) were synthesized in N-methylpyrrolidinone (NMP) to yield the corresponding poly(amic acid)s (PAA)s, which were then chemically imidized. To reduce the dielectric properties of the porous PI films, amine-functionalized, surface-modified hollow silica nanoparticles (AHNS) with various sizes from 100 nm to 1 μm, prepared via sol-gel process, were added with PAA at 3, 5, or 10 % weight content, followed by chemical imidization to produce the porous PI/AHNS films. To avoid the high-volume shrinkage of wet gels and maintain the high porosity of the PI with low polarizability, AHNS nanoparticles were added to the porous structure of the PI xerogels as a physical crosslinker. The polyimide hybrid film with 10 nm AHNS nanoparticles at 10 % weight content showed a dielectric constant of 1.151 and a dissipation rate of 0.001 at a frequency of 10 GHz.

Abstract:The ultrathin polyimide films with low dielectric constant have been fabricated by static electronic layer by layer self-assembly of poly(amic acid) salt (PAAs)/poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH)/imogolite nanotubes followed by heat-induced imidization. The imogolite nanotubes were introduced to form a nano-porous composite polyimide film, which exhibited a lower dielectric constant of 2.78 compared to 3.25 for pure polyimide film. The assembly film thickness was about 12.2 nm in each cycle multilayer and reduced to 10.7 nm after heat-induced imidization due to the loss of hydrated water from imogolite nanotubes. The multilayer growth was found to be steady and uniform, and the growth relationship of the film was linear. Heating of PAAs/PAH/imogolite film at 250 °C for 2 h completely converted the poly(amic acid) to the corresponding polyimide. Electrostatic deposition of poly(amic acids) and imogolite nanotubes thus provides a convenient way to prepare ultrathin polyimide films with low dielectric constant. Therefore, this porous polyimide/imogolite nanotubes composite film with low dielectric constant has potential applications as interlayer dielectrics in integrated circuit manufacturing.Graphical abstract

Abstract:Poly(ether imide) (PEI) is a high-performance polymer with outstanding thermal stability, mechanical strength, and processability, but a critical drawback of poor solvent resistance. Exposure to solvents including chloroform, dimethylformamide, dichloromethane, and N-methyl pyrrolidone severely compromises the mechanical and thermal performances. Herein, we report a method for preparing thermally crosslinked PEI (X-PEI) from azide-terminated PEI (N-3-PEI-N-3) synthesized via a one-pot diazotization-azidation reaction. X-PEI affords unprecedented solvent resistance unpossessed by conventional PEIs, as well as solution processability unrivaled by counterpart high-performance polymers such as polyimide. The glass transition temperature, storage modulus, and swelling ratio correlate positively with crosslinking density, which is determined by the molar mass and azide concentration of N-3-PEI-N-3. This work advances the chemistry of high-performance polymers. The method is generic and applicable to other engineering polymers.
Controlling Pore Size and Wettability of A Unique Microheterogeneous Copolymer Film with Porous Structure

Abstract:We have fabricated a mesoporous copolymer thin film whose surface pore size can be varied from submicrometer to micrometer. Our fabrication method requires microphase separation induced by a silicone surfactant during the rapid solvent evaporation and polymerizations. The sample films were characterized with atomic force microscopy (AFM), confocal Raman spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), in situ infrared (IR), attenuated total reflection (ATR), and other techniques. The characterization results show that the pore size can be controlled by altering the concentration of silicone surfactant. Furthermore, the mesoporous copolymer film with hydrophobic convex and hydrophilic concave structure exhibits both hydrophobic and oleophobic properties. The unique properties can be attributed to the special heterogeneous porous structure of the polymer film. The resulting porous polymer films can be utilized in many fields, such as self-cleaning, antiadhesives, adsorption, and separation. These mesoscale-patterned surfaces can also provide a model system for investigating the interface properties of actual surfaces.
Layer-by-layer self-assembly, controllable disintegration of polycarboxybetaine multilayers and preparation of free-standing films at physiological conditions

Abstract:The self-assembly and disintegration behavior of polyzwitterion, poly(4-vinylpyridiniomethanecarboxylate) (PVPMC), and negatively charged polyelectrolyte, poly(acrylic acid) (PAA), layer-by-layer (LbL) multilayer films were investigated in detail by using UV-vis absorption spectroscopy, quartz crystal microbalance (QCM) and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results indicated that the PVPMC/PAA multilayer films grew linearly with increasing bilayer number. The disintegration rate of PVPMC/PAA multilayers could be well controlled by varying the concentration of salt in aqueous solution. It was found that PVPMC/PAA multilayer films could be completely disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution within 15 min. Such controllable disintegration behavior rendered the PVPMC/PAA multilayer as an excellent sacrificial sublayer for fabricating freestanding LbL multilayer films. Free-standing multilayer films were then successfully fabricated by LbL self-assembly of positively charged polyelectrolyte complex (PEC), made from poly(diallyldimethylammonium) (PDDA) and poly(sodium 4-styrenesulfonate) (PSS), and negatively charged PSS with PVPMC/PAA as a sacrificial sublayer, which was disintegrated in 0.9% normal saline solution. The obtained free-standing films had good mechanical properties with 24.1 MPa tensile strength at break and 0.56 GPa Young's modulus.
Morphology, rheology, and mechanical properties of polylactide/ poly(ethylene-co-octene) blends

Abstract:Polylactide (PLA)/poly(ethylene-co-octene) (POE) blends containing ethylene-glycidyl methacrylate copolymer (EGMA) as a compatibilizer were prepared by melt blending. An immiscible, two-phase structure with POE dispersed in the PLA matrix was observed by scanning electron microscopy. It was found that the POE particle size was significantly decreased by the addition of EGMA, and the POE particle size and distribution decreased with the increase of the compatibilizer content up to 2% EGMA, beyond which the POE particle size and distribution remained unchanged. The reactions between the epoxy groups of EGMA and carboxylic or hydroxyl groups of PLA were elucidated by the Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy. Rheological results showed that the G'(omega), G "(omega), and complex viscosity of PLA/POE blends significantly increased at low frequencies with the addition of EGMA. The failure mode changed from brittle fracture of the neat PLA to ductile fracture of the PLA/POE blends.

Abstract:Insulating materials with a low dielectric constant and a low dielectric loss are in high demand to meet requirements of the continuous miniaturization of electronic devices and high speed information transmission. We fabricated porous polyimide/ reduced graphene oxide (PI/rGO) hybrid films with an ultralow dielectric constant and a low dielectric loss via a facile "blow-balloon" method. Poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) was used as a pore-forming agent by mixing with polyamide acid carboxylate (PAAC) and GO in water. The ternary mixture of PAAC/GO/ PEG formed a hydrogel and dried naturally into a xerogel film. Porous PI/rGO films were obtained by in situ thermal pyrolysis of PEG through heating PAAC/GO/PEG hybrid films to 400 degrees C. The homogeneous porous structure could be regulated easily by adjusting the mass ratio of PEG to PAAC/GO. The porous structure inside the hybrid films prepared by the hydrogel method provided the PI/rGO films with an ultralow dielectric constant (kappa) as low as 1.9 and a high ductility with an average elongation at break above 38%. This porous PI/rGO film with an ultralow kappa value may be a promising candidate for next-generation interlayer dielectrics.

Abstract:The layer-by-layer (LBL) self-assembly has been extensively used as a simple and effective method for the preparation of polyelectrolyte multilayer films. In this work, we utilized this unique method to prepare polyimide precursor/layered double hydroxide (LDH) ultrathin films. Well-crystallized Co–Al–CO3 LDH and subsequent anion exchanged Co–Al–NO3 LDH were prepared and characterized by scanning electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction (XRD). By vigorous shaking of the as-prepared Co–Al–NO3 LDH, positively charged and exfoliated LDH nanosheets were obtained. Atomic force microscopy and XRD investigations indicated the delamination of LDH nanosheets. The precursor of polyimide, poly(amic acid) tertiary amine salt (PAS) was prepared by the polycondensation of dianhydride and diamine, and subsequent amine salt formation. By using the LBL method, heterogeneous ultrathin films of PAS and LDH were prepared. The formation of the ordered nanostructured assemblies was confirmed by the progressive enhancement of UV absorbance and the XRD results.

Abstract:An amphiphilic LCBC PEO-b-PAz consisting of flexible PEO as a hydrophilic block and poly(methacrylic acid) containing an azobenzene moiety in side chain as a hydrophobic LC segment was synthesized and used to fabricated microporous films by spin-coating method under a dry environment. With the help of a small amount of water, well-arranged ellipsoidal micropores embedded in a LC matrix were obtained and the pore size is in the range of several tens mu m of water. The influence of water content and rotational speed was studied in detail. It was found that regularly patterned microporous films can be prepared with certain water content, and the pore size can be easily tailored through changing the rotational speed. The obtained microporous structures showed good thermal and photo stability.

Abstract:Thin films of amphiphilic ionic polyacetylenes based on poly (N-octadecyl-2-ethynylpyridinium bromide) were formed using the Langmuir−Blodgett and layer-by-layer deposition techniques. The surface pressure−molecular area isotherms of the monolayers of these polymers at the air−water interface indicate that the alkyl (octadecyl) chains of the repeating units are oriented perpendicularly to the water surface while the rigid conjugated polymer backbones are located within the planar layer of the interface. The molecular organization of transferred polymer multilayers has been also studied by FT-IR, ATR, GAR, and ellipsometry. As a result of this study, a model of the molecular organization of ultrathin films is proposed, in which the conjugated backbone chains of the polymer molecules are oriented parallel to the substrate and are sandwiched between layers of interdigitated octadecyl groups. The electrical conductivity of the polymer films was found to increase substantially upon doping with iodine. Enhanced gas permeability and permselectivity of membranes from Nafion were achieved by deposition of ultrathin films of the above polyacetylene on these membranes.

Abstract:Low dielectric constant (low-k) porous films of high density polyethylene-grafted-maleic anhydride were prepared via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) using di-n-octyl phthalate as the solvent and methanol as the extractant. The results show that, for the process of TIPS, cellular structures of spherical pores were obtained. Lower polymer concentration and lower cooling rate induced larger pores and higher porosity. For the dielectric constant, the introduction of pores considerably reduced the dielectric constant from 2.60 to 1.56 at most. Pore size showed little effect on dielectric constant in our experiment, but porosity was found to be the key influential factor. The relationship between dielectric constant and porosity was found to be best fit to Rayleigh model.

Abstract:SiO2/polyimide(PI) nanocomposite films with low dielectric permittivity with diamines of pyromellitic dianhydride(PMDA) and 4,4-oxydianiline(ODA) were successfully synthesized by a wet phase inversion process.Then removal of the silica cores of the nano-composite films by HF etching gives rise to the nanoporous of PI films.It is found that the dielectric permittivities of the porous films can be reduced from 3.54 of the pure PI to 3.05(1kHz) by using 15 wt% pore-former(SiO2).The nanopores were characterized by transmission electron microscopy(TEM).The relationships between the structure of the films and the properties,including the dielectric permittivity,the heat resistance,the contact angles and the mechanical strength,were researched.
