Abstract:Four types of nickel catalysts supported on aluminum oxide (Ni/Al2O3) with different nickel loadings were synthesized using the co-precipitation method and were used for the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to prepare γ-valerolactone (GVL). The synthesized Ni/Al2O3 catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic activity in dioxane, and the activity of the catalysts was excellent even after being used four times in dioxane. The catalytic activity in dioxane as a solvent was found to be superior to the activity in water. Nitrogen physisorption, X-ray diffraction, and transmission electron microscopy were employed to characterize the fresh and used catalysts. The effects of the nickel loading, temperature, hydrogen pressure, and substrate/catalyst ratio on the catalytic activity were investigated.

Abstract:Here, we report an inexpensive nickel-phosphine complex that can catalyse neat levulinic acid (LA) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) without additive at 1 atm H-2, and the catalyst can be reduced to 0.01 mol% at 30 atm. 5.8 kg LA was successfully converted to GVL in a yield of 94% with 0.1 mol% catalyst. DFT calculations and in situ APXPS indicate that L-Ni+-H species are the key active intermediates.

Abstract:A novel carbon-based strong acid catalyst, methylnaphthalenesulfonic acid - formaldehyde condensate, has been synthesized successfully. The catalytic activity for acetalization and ketalization at room temperature under solvent-free condition was investigated. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction. Also the novel heterogeneous catalyst owned the advantages of high activity, wide applicability, strikingly simple work-up procedure, non-pollution, stability and reusability, which made the catalyst hold great potential for the "green process".

Abstract:The use of eco-friendly biomass as a resource is an efficient way to address the problems of fossil fuel depletion and climate change. In biomass conversion, versatile γ-valerolactone (GVL) is generally obtained from levulinic acid (LA) hydrogenation via a multimetallic catalyst system. Despite conversion efficiency being enhanced in mild conditions due to metal interactions, maintaining high catalyst stability is still a challenge. In this study, we synthesized a surrounded Co0.52Ni0.48@Al2O3-IE catalyst that exhibited excellent alloying and synergistic interaction between the metal constituents. Under relatively mild reaction conditions, the GVL yield over the catalyst exceeded 99% in LA hydrogenation. The catalyst showed no deactivation in a test of five cycles, displaying superiority in stability, possibly due to reasons of the physical isolation of the shell and the alumina retention on the Co-Ni alloys surface caused by the reversibility of exchange equilibrium. The present work demonstrated that a surrounded structured catalyst fabricated by ion exchange (IE) with active metals physically enclosed can lead to high catalytic activity and superior stability.

Abstract:Green nylons! Acidic ionic-liquid catalysis for the transformation of γ-valerolactone into methyl 3-pentenoate (M3P) is shown to be performed efficiently under mild conditions. M3P is obtained selectively from a reaction at 170 °C for 3.5 h in the presence of an acidic ionic liquid that has a low vapor pressure, high thermal stability, and excellent catalytic performance. A possible reaction pathway for this conversion is also presented.

Abstract:Cobalt‐catalyzed selective transformation of levulinic acid and primary amines into pyrrolidines and pyrrolidinones under H2 has been developed. The catalyst system consisting of Co(NTf2)2, 1,1,1‐tris(di(4‐methoxyphenyl)phosphinomethyl) ethane ((p‐anisyl)triphos) and Me3SiOTf works well for facile synthesis of pyrrolidines via reductive amination/cyclization/deoxygenative reduction of amide, and using Co(NTf2)2/1,1,1‐tris(diphenylphosphinomethyl) ethane (triphos) as the catalyst under reduced hydrogen pressure results in exclusive formation of pyrrolidinones. Both aryl and alkyl primary amines are suitable substrates, and a variety of functional groups are tolerated. Meanwhile, 4‐oxo‐4‐arylbutanoic acids, 5‐oxohexanoic acid, 6‐oxoheptanoic acid, 2‐formylbenzoic acid, 2‐acetylbenzoic acid and 2'‐acetyl‐[1,1'‐biphenyl]‐2‐carboxylic acid are also applicable, allowing for convenient access to cyclic amines and lactams with different ring size.

Abstract:By functionalizing organic ligands and regulating metal nodes, metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) exhibit a variety of catalytic properties, which not only expand their application in biomass conversion but also increase the designability of catalysts. Herein, we have developed a synthesis strategy to fabricate multicomponent nanocatalysts (M–ZrO2/N–C, M = Ni, Fe, Co, Cu) derived from postsynthetic modification of zirconium–organic frameworks using Schiff base as an effective bridge. These nanocatalysts were utilized for the hydrogenation of bio-derived methyl levulinate to γ-valerolactone. The catalytic performance demonstrates that Ni–ZrO2/N–C possesses superior catalytic activity (99.9% conversion of methyl levulinate and 94.7% selectivity of γ-valerolactone), which could be attributed to the synergy effect of metal Ni and ZrO2 species. Various characterization methods (X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS)) indicated that metallic nickel activated H2, and the introduction of ZrO2 provided sufficient Lewis acid sites, accelerating the intramolecular esterification process.

Abstract:We examined the effectiveness of metal-exchanged phosphomolybdic acid salts in converting levulinic acid, derived from biomass, into valuable products (alkyl levulinate). We prepared salts of phosphomolybdic acid using different metals (Fe3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, and Co2+). The influence of metal cations on the conversion and selectivity of the reactions was assessed. We found that the salts prepared with iron and aluminum phosphomolybdate were the most effective catalysts for the esterification of levulinic acid with methanol, with the conversion and selectivity tending towards 100% after 6 h of reaction at a temperature of 323 K. The effect of catalyst loading and its recovery and reuse was evaluated; the results from the reaction using aluminum phosphomolybdate remained similar for four cycles of use. The influence of temperature on conversion and selectivity was investigated between 298 and 353 K. The reactivity of different alcohols with a carbon chain size of C1-C4 was assessed and conversions above 65% were obtained for all alcohols tested under the conditions evaluated, except for tert-butyl alcohol. These catalysts are a promising alternative to the traditional soluble and corrosive Brønsted acid catalysts. The superior performance of these catalysts was ascribed to the higher pH decline triggered by the hydrolysis of these metal cations.

Abstract:A stable and highly efficient supported Cu-Ni catalysts for the conversion of ethyl levulinate (EL) to gamma-valerolactone (GVL) was developed. The catalysts were characterized by XRD, TEM, TPD, TPR, and XPS. The support effect of metal oxides (Al2O3, SiO2, ZrO2, and TiO2) revealed that Cu-Ni supported on Al2O3 showed the highest activity for EL hydrogenation to ethyl 4-hydroxypentanoate (EHP) and the subsequent intramolecular esterification of EHP to GVL. EHP intramolecular esterification to GVL in the ethanol solution was a reversible reaction with an equilibrium constant of 24 at 453 K. A simplified reaction kinetic network was established. The solvent had a significant influence on the reaction equilibrium and the catalyst stability. Cu-Ni/Al2O3 in n-hexane solvent gave a higher GVL yield than that in ethanol solvent, and showed better recyclability than that in toluene solvent. With optimizing the conditions, CuNi/Al2O3 gave 99.9% conversion and 98% selectivity to GVL with a space-time yield of 1.13 gGVL gcat(-1) h(-1) in n-hexane solvent with good recyclability. Abstract:The field of asymmetric (transfer) hydrogenation of prochiral olefins has been dominated by noble metal catalysts based on rhodium, ruthenium, and iridium. Herein we report that a simple nickel catalyst is highly active in the transfer hydrogenation using formic acid. Chiral α- and β-amino acid derivatives were obtained in good to excellent enantioselectivity. The key toward success was the use of the strongly donating and sterically demanding bisphosphine Binapine.

Abstract:Levulinic acid esters MeC(O)CH2CH2CO2R (LAE) are emerging bio-based chemicals used as solvents, additives and plasticizers. In this work a variety of levulinates (R= n-butyl, n-hexyl, n-octyl, 2-ethylhexyl, geranyl, 2-ethoxyethyl, benzyl, 2-octyl, cyclohexyl, menthyl) is obtained from the solvent-free transesterification of methyl levulinate (ML) and esterification of levulinic acid (LA), catalyzed by a dimeric complex of iron(III). The results are competitive with the few related reports of literature mainly based on heterogeneous catalysis. This first systematic study based on a homogeneous catalytic system therefore represents a significant extension within the field of biomass valorization.
