Abstract:In this work, one-pot synthesis of biofuel-valerolactone (GVL) and valeric acid (VA) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) are highly selectively produced on a series of robust Pd-nanoparticle catalysts. These fine Pd nanoparticles are controllably synthesized and confined in the mesoporous channel of MCM-41-derived supports via a green solvent CO2-assited method. A combination analysis tools are used to study physical properties and elucidate the relationship between the structure and performances. The catalytic results display 5 wt% Pd/AlMCM-41 exhibits the best performances of 88.5% GVL yield at the perfect conversion of LA. Moreover, without the isolation of GVL intermediate, it can also efficiently catalyze the one-pot conversion of LA to VA with 45.1% yield. Besides, Pd-nanoparticle catalysts maintain stable structure and good catalytic performances over several runs.

Abstract:The development of the catalytic conversion of biomass-based platform molecules into oxygenated fuel molecules is of great significance in order to reduce the dependence on fossil resources and to solve environmental problems. Alkyl valerate esters were proven to have the potential to be renewable additives of gasoline and diesel. In this work, we studied the hydrogenation of levulinic acid (LA) to valerate esters over supported Ru catalysts, and found that the acidity was an important factor for the catalyst performance. A bifunctional catalyst Ru/SBA-SO3H was developed as an active catalyst, and a highest yield of 94% to ethyl valerate (EV) was achieved. The catalyst was characterized by nitrogen adsorption/desorption methods, X-ray power diffraction (XRD), transmission electron spectroscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The effects of reaction conditions were comprehensively investigated and probable reaction pathways were proposed and verified. The conversion of LA to various alkyl valerate esters can also be catalyzed by the bifunctional catalyst. In addition, supported Cu and Ni catalysts were also screened under similar reaction conditions as Ru-based catalysts, and the combination of Ni/SBA-15 and SBA-SO3H exhibited activity for the conversion of LA to EV.

Abstract:The synthesis of gamma-valerolactone from biomass-derived ethyl levulinate is of great importance for biomass conversion. However, development of efficient catalytic systems which are simple, commercially available, easy for preparation, and large-scale for the hydrogenation of ethyl levulinate to afford gamma-valerolactone is still necessary. Here, a series of commercial zeolite supported catalysts were synthesized by using a wet impregnation method for the systemic investigation of the hydrogenation of biomass-derived ethyl levulinate. High yield and selectivity towards GVL were achieved and varied and systematic characterizations including XRD, XPS, TEM and BET were used to investigate these catalysts. The influence of different reaction condition parameters was also investigated and discussed. The construction of zeolite supported catalysts showed broad prospects for the conversion of biomass into biofuels.

Abstract:The utilization of biomass has recently attracted tremendous attention as a potential alternative to petroleum for the production of liquid fuels and chemicals. We report an efficient alcohol‐mediated reactive extraction strategy by which a hydrophobic mixture of butyl levulinate and formate esters, derived from cellulosic biomass, can be converted to valuable γ‐valerolactone (GVL) by a simple supported gold catalyst system without need of an external hydrogen source. The essential role of the supported gold is to facilitate the rapid and selective decomposition of butyl formate to produce a hydrogen stream, which enables the highly effective reduction of butyl levulinate into GVL. This protocol simplifies the recovery and recycling of sulfuric acid, which is used for cellulose deconstruction.

Abstract:The synthesis of 2, 4-diisopropyl-5,5-dimethyl-1,3-dioxane through the acetalization of isobutyraldehyde with 2, 2, 4-trimethyl-1,3-pentanediol (TMPD) catalyzed by the novel carbon based acid was first carried out. High conversion (≥98%) and specific selectivity were obtained using the novel carbon based acid, which kept high activity after it was reused 5 times. Moreover, the catalyst could be used to catalyze the acetalization and ketalization of different aldehydes and ketones with superior yield. The yield of several products was over 90%. The novel heterogeneous catalyst has the distinct advantages of high activity, strikingly simple workup procedure, non-pollution, and reusability, which will contribute to the success of the green process greatly.

Abstract:A new method has been developed for the catalytic conversion of biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) into gamma-valerolactone (GVL) with molecular hydrogen (H-2) using a series of heterogeneous noble metal catalysts. Excellent yields of the GVL were obtained under mild reaction conditions of 50 degrees C and 2 MPa of H-2 using iridium nanoparticles supported on carbon nanotubes (Ir/CNT). It is noteworthy that the reaction proceeded smoothly in the presence of formic acid (FA, co-produced with LA in equimolar amounts during the acid-mediated hydrolysis of lignocellulosic biomass). Furthermore, the FA remained intact, highlighting the practical advantages of this process for the convenient and cost-effective processing of a biomass-derived LA/FA solution. Abstract:A series of Pd nanoparticles deposited on the SiO2 support were facilely and successfully synthesized in the presence of the green solvent CO2, where the uniform distribution of Pd with small particle size was successfully achieved. The resulting Pd/SiO2 nanoparticles catalysts exhibited excellent catalytic performances in the selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived levulinic acid, showing close to perfect selectivity of biofuel gamma-valerolactone with the TON of 884.7 at 97.3% conversion of levulinic acid. The catalytic performance was superior to the activities of the 5 wt% Pd/SiO2 nanoparticle catalyst prepared by the traditional impregnation method. Besides, the reaction parameters (e.g., the Pd loading, reaction time, reaction temperature, and hydrogen pressure), catalyst stability and reaction mechanism on the hydrogenation performance were studied. Abstract:Efficient conversion of renewable biomass platform chemicals into high-quality fuels remains challenging. A one-pot catalytic approach has been developed to synthesize various structurally defined biofuels by using Hf(OTf)4 and Pd/C for selective tandem catalysis and 2-methylfuran (2-MF) as a renewable feedstock. 2-MF first undergoes Lewis acid-catalyzed hydroxyalkylation/alkylation (HAA) condensation with carbonyl compounds to afford intermediates containing the targeted carbon skeletons of hydrocarbon or ether products, and these intermediates then undergo hydrogenation or hydrodeoxygenation to afford the target products, catalyzed by metal triflate+Pd/C in the same pot. The present process can produce structurally defined alkanes and cyclic ethers under mild conditions.
Biocatalytic Upgrading of 5-Hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) with Levulinic Acid to HMF Levulinate in Biomass-Derived Solvents

Abstract:Valorization of biomass-based platform chemicals into high value-added products has attracted increasing attention recently. In this work, upgrading of 5-hydroxymethylfurfual (HMF) and levulinic acid, two important biomass-based platform chemicals, to HMF levulinate via a green and efficient enzymatic approach was reported. Novozym 435 was found to be the best biocatalyst for the enzymatic esterification. The enzymatic esterification progressed smoothly in t-butanol, 2-methy1-2-butanol, and cyclopentyl methyl ether as well as in the ecofriendly biomass-derived 2-methyltetrahydrofuran (2-MeTHF), while no enzymatic reaction occurred in deep eutectic solvents. When HMF concentration was up to 500 rnM, a good conversion of 72% was achieved in 2-MeTHF. The reaction temperature exerted a significant effect on the enzymatic esterification. When the reaction temperature is below 40 degrees C, high HMF conversions (>85%) were obtained. Besides, significant inactivation of the enzyme was observed at more than 50 degrees C, resulting in poor conversions.

Abstract:Levulinic acid is an important platform molecule from biomass-based renewable resources. A sustainable manufacturing process for this chemical and its derivatives is the enabling factor to harness the renewable resource. An integrated catalytic process to directly convert furfural to levulinate ester was developed based on a bifunctional catalyst of Pt nanoparticles supported on a ZrNb binary phosphate solid acid. The hydrogenation of furfural and the following alcoholysis of furfuryl alcohol were performed over this catalyst in a one-pot conversion model. Mesoporous ZrNb binary phosphate was synthesized by a sol-gel method and had a high surface area of 170.1 m(2) g(-1) and a large average pore size of around 8.0 nm. Pt nanoparticles remained in a monodisperse state on the support, and the reaction over Pt/ZrNbPO4 (Pt loading: 2.0 wt%; Zr/Nb, 1:1) gave a very high selectivity to levulinate derivatives (91% in total). The sustainability of this conversion was greatly improved by the process intensification based on the new catalyst, mild reaction conditions, cost abatement in separation and purification, and utilization of green reagents and solvents.

Abstract:Clean and highly selective production of biofuel γ-valerolactone (GVL) from biomass-derived levulinic acid (LA) was reported in one-pot on a series of robust, stable and reusable Pd nanoparticles in water solvent. The utilized Pd nanoparticles catalysts were facilely synthesized in the mesoporous channel of various supports (e.g., MCM-41, ZrMCM-41 and TiMCM-41). The experimental results indicated that Pd nanoparticles catalysts can highly selectively produce GVL with 96.3% yield at the perfect conversion of LA. Additionally, these Pd-nanoparticles catalysts were easy to be recycled and behaved stable performances over several runs, which may be a good candidate for the cleaner processing of biomass-derived resources.

Abstract:We report the performance of UiO-66 and its Bronsted acid functionalized derivative, UiO-66-(COOH)(2), as heterogeneous catalysts for levulinic acid esterification with ethanol. Importantly, compared with UiO-66, UiO-66-(COOH)(2) displayed superior catalytic performance (up to 97.0 +/- 1.1% yield of ethyl levulinate) attributed to the synergistic effect between Lewis acidic Zr clusters and Bronsted acidic -COOH groups. Furthermore, UiO-66-(COOH)(2) was stable and reusable without an appreciable loss in catalytic activity for at least five consecutive cycles. This study demonstrates that the interplay of Bronsted and Lewis acid sites in zirconium metal-organic frameworks leads to more efficient catalytic conversion of a biomass feedstock to biofuel, and with further hypothesis driven research, additional materials that show promise as candidates for catalytic conversion of biomass feedstocks to biofuels and valuable chemicals can be developed.

Abstract:Valeric acid can be produced by selective hydrogenation of biomass-derived levulinic acid. The present work aims to synthesize ethyl valerate (EV), a fuel, fuel additive through the esterification of valeric acid with ethanol using Al-SB and x% PTA/Al-SB (x = 20%, 30% and 40 wt.%) catalysts prepared by hydrothermal and impregnation methods. Physicochemical properties were distinguished by various analytical methods. The characterization results revealed that Al-SB conserved the mesoporous structure up to 40% loading of PTA. Transmission electron microscope images exhibited that PTA species well dispersed in the uniform pore channels of Al-SB. The catalytic performance of all the obtained catalysts towards the esterification of valeric acid with ethanol under mild reaction conditions was studied. The reaction parameters such as catalyst weight, reaction time, alcohol molar ratio and reaction temperature were optimized. Among them, 30% PTA/Al-SB catalyst exhibited the highest catalytic activity with 96% conversion of valeric acid and 100% selectivity towards ethyl valerate. The recyclability of the prepared catalyst was also studied and it was found to be excellent.

Abstract:The direct production of value‐added chemicals from biomass via multiple conversion processes with a sole renewable solid catalyst is promising for carbon‐neutral development while challenging. Herein, a series of novel bioresourced organic‐inorganic hybrid materials were synthesized from bio‐based ascorbic acid (Vc), zirconium chloride (ZrCl4) and p‐toluenesulfonic acid (p‐TSA) through a facile solvothermal process. The as‐prepared Zr‐Vc‐3 catalyst with Vc, ZrCl4, and p‐TSA in the 1:1:0.5 molar ratio displayed outstanding performance in direct furfural‐to‐γ‐valerolactone (GVL) transformation, giving an ultrahigh GVL yield of 76.2%, with an ideal activation energy (55.46 kJ mol–1), outperforming state‐of‐the‐art catalysts. The superior performance of Zr‐Vc‐3 could be ascribed to its good reusability, relatively large pore size, suitable amount of acid‐base sites, and good hydrophobicity. Mechanistic studies unveiled that Lewis acid‐base sites facilitate the conversion of furfural to furfuryl alcohol and isopropyl levulinate (IPL) to 4‐hydroxypentanoate via transfer hydrogenation process, while Brønsted acid sites are instrumental in the ring‐opening of furfuryl alcohol to IPL and the lactonization of 4‐hydroxypentanoate to GVL, overall contributing to the multi‐step conversion of furfural to GVL in a single pot. This work provides a valuable reference for precisely constructing bio‐based OIHMs with tailored functionalities for one‐pot valorization of biomass feedstocks via tandem reactions.

Abstract:We examined the effectiveness of metal-exchanged phosphomolybdic acid salts in converting levulinic acid, derived from biomass, into valuable products (alkyl levulinate). We prepared salts of phosphomolybdic acid using different metals (Fe3+, Al3+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Mn2+, Ni2+, and Co2+). The influence of metal cations on the conversion and selectivity of the reactions was assessed. We found that the salts prepared with iron and aluminum phosphomolybdate were the most effective catalysts for the esterification of levulinic acid with methanol, with the conversion and selectivity tending towards 100% after 6 h of reaction at a temperature of 323 K. The effect of catalyst loading and its recovery and reuse was evaluated; the results from the reaction using aluminum phosphomolybdate remained similar for four cycles of use. The influence of temperature on conversion and selectivity was investigated between 298 and 353 K. The reactivity of different alcohols with a carbon chain size of C1-C4 was assessed and conversions above 65% were obtained for all alcohols tested under the conditions evaluated, except for tert-butyl alcohol. These catalysts are a promising alternative to the traditional soluble and corrosive Brønsted acid catalysts. The superior performance of these catalysts was ascribed to the higher pH decline triggered by the hydrolysis of these metal cations.

Abstract:Upgrading biomass-derived phenolic compounds provides a valu-able approach for the production of higher-value-added fuels and chemicals. However, most established catalytic systems display low hydrodeoxygenation (HDO) activities even under harsh reaction conditions. Here, we found that Pd supported on -NH2-modified hi-erarchically porous carbon (Pd/HPC-NH2) with formic acid (FA) as hydrogen source exhibits unprecedented performance for the se-lective HDO of benzylic ketones from crude lignin-derived oxygen-ates. Designed experiments and theoretical calculations reveal that the H+/H-species generated from FA decomposition acceler-ates nucleophilic attack on carbonyl carbon in benzylic ketones and the formate species formed via the esterification of intermedi-ate alcohol with FA expedites the cleavage of C-O bonds, achieving a TOF of 152.5 h-1 at 30 degrees C for vanillin upgrading, 15 times higher than that in traditional HDO processes (-10 h-1, 100 degrees C-300 degrees C). This work provides an intriguing green route to produce transporta-tion fuels or valuable chemicals from only biomass under mild conditions.

Abstract:The selective hydrogenation-amination of levulinic acid into pyrrolidones is regarded as one of the most important reactions to transform biomass-derived lignocellulose feedstocks into valuable chemicals. Here we report on ZrO2-supported Pd nanoparticles as a highly active, chemoselective, and reusable catalyst for the hydrogenation-amination of levulinic acid with H-2 and various amines under mild reaction conditions. The Pd/ZrO2 catalyst exhibited a marked increase in activity compared with conventional Pd catalysts and a significant enhancement in pyrrolidone selectivity. The excellent catalytic performances are reasonably attributed to the ZrO2 support, which has strong Lewis acidity to enhance the hydrogenation-amination reaction and hinder side reactions.
