Abstract:A simple and general copper-catalyzed method has been developed for transformations of various functional groups (-I, -N-3, -SO2R, -OH, -NH2, and -NO2) on aromatic rings from arylboronic acids in water under air. The protocol uses cheap and readily available inorganic salts (KI, NaN3, NaSO2R, NaOH, NaNO2) and aqueous ammonia as the functionalgroup sources, simple Cu2O/NH3 as the catalyst system, environmentally friendly water as the solvent, and oxygen in air as the oxidant. Importantly, the copper catalyst system in water was recyclable. This study should provide a useful strategy for interconversions of the functional groups on aromatic rings.

Abstract:Selective functionalizations of aryl C-H bonds in 2-arylpyridines have been developed via sequential borylation and aerobic oxidative copper catalysis, and the corresponding aryl halides, sulfones, azides and arylamines were obtained in good yields. The protocol uses cheap and readily available boron tribromide (BBr3) as the borylating reagent, and in-organic salts (potassium iodide, ammonium bromide, sodium alkylsulfinates, sodium azide) as the functional group sources. This method makes functionalizations of aryl C-H bonds easy.

Abstract:A highly regioselective iodosulfonylation of allenes in the presence of CuI and 1,10-phenanthroline has been developed for the synthesis of various useful ( E)-α-iodomethyl vinylsulfones in moderate to excellent yields. This practical reaction is fast, operationally simple, and in particular, proceeds under very mild conditions to afford the target products with high regio- and stereoselectivity. The selectivity was illustrated by a conceptual DFT analysis.

Abstract:The reaction of o-aminoacetophenones and arylboronic acids catalyzed by copper(II) salts in the presence of pyridine under an O2 atmosphere provides a general and efficient one-pot preparation of biologically interesting acridones. This relay reaction comprises an intermolecular Suzuki cross-coupling, intramolecular oxidative C(sp3)-H amination, and C(sp2)-H activation with simultaneous rearrangement of the generated isatin intermediates. This strategy tolerates both electron-donating and -withdrawing functionalities to afford various acridones in good to excellent yields.

Abstract:Sulfonylative C-H bond functionalization through a copper-catalyzed three-component reaction of 8-aminoquinoline amides, DABCO center dot(SO2)(2) and aryldiazonium tetrafluoroborates is developed. Excellent selectivity in the para-position is observed for this copper-catalyzed transformation. This reaction is triggered by a copper-chelated complex via the coordination of the copper catalyst with the substrate and arylsulfonyl radical generated in situ, thus providing 5-sulfonyl-8-aminoquinoline amides in moderate to good yields.

Abstract:Arylboronic acids and their derivatives have been widely exploited as important synthetic precursors in organic synthesis, materials science, and pharmaceutical development. In addition to numerous applications in transition-metal-mediated cross-coupling reactions, transition-metal-free transformations involving arylboronic acids and derivatives have recently received a surge of attention for converting the C-B bond to C-C, C-N, C-O, and many other C-X bonds. Consequently, a wide range of useful compounds, e.g., phenols, anilines, nitroarenes, and haloarenes, have been readily synthesized. Amongst these efforts, many versatile reagents have been developed and a lot of practical approaches demonstrated. The research in this promising field is summarized in the current review and organized on the basis of the type of bonds being formed.

Abstract:An efficient method for the synthesis of homopropargylboronates by copper-catalyzed alkynylboration of alkenes with diboron reagents and bromoalkynes has been developed. The alkynylboration reaction features high selectivity and efficiency, mild reaction conditions, wide substrate scope, and functional-group compatibility, and is a highly attractive complement to existing methods for the synthesis of homopropargylboronates. Both the boryl and alkynyl groups are good potential functional groups for the subsequent manipulations that provide access to a variety of important molecule structures.

Abstract:An efficient heterogeneous copper(I)-catalyzed cross-coupling of aryl iodides and pinacolborane has been developed. The reaction proceeds smoothly in THF at room temperature by using 10 mol% of MCM-41-anchored NHC-copper(I) complex [MCM-41-NHC-CuI] as catalyst and sodium hydride as base and provides a general and practical route for the synthesis of a wide variety of arylboronates in good to high yields. This heterogenized copper(I) catalyst can be facilely prepared via a simple two-step procedure starting from easily accessible and inexpensive reagents, and exhibits a higher catalytic activity than CuI and can be recycled more than ten times without any significant loss of its catalytic activity.

Abstract:A simple, general and efficient method is developed for the metal-free iodination of arylboronic acids. The protocol uses very cheap molecular iodine as the halide source and potassium carbonate as the base. The method is highly tolerant of various functional groups present in the substrates. Importantly, the iodination strategy can also be applied very effectively in the one-pot, two-step synthesis of biaryl derivatives.

Abstract:Herein, we reported the first copper-catalyzed highly efficient C(sp2)-H functionalization of unprotected naphthols and phenols with α-aryl-α-diazoesters. In this transformation, CuCl2 efficiently promoted the highly chemo- and site-selective C-H bond functionalization under mild conditions, furnishing diverse phenol derivatives in moderate to excellent yields from readily available starting materials.
