Abstract:Oxidative transformations of phenols have attracted significant attention of chemists due to their importance in biological process and organic synthesis. In contrast to the relatively well-developed oxygenation and coupling reactions of phenols, the highly efficient and selective oxidative ring cleavage of phenols is under-represented. This work describes a novel CuCl-catalyzed tandem homocoupling/skeletal rearrangement of phenols that realizes the cleavage of the phenol ring by using air or Ag2CO3 as the oxidant. Interestingly, simply changing the oxidant to K2S2O8 results in the oxidative coupling/cyclization of phenols to give dibenzofurans. These results set an important precedent of oxidant-controlled catalytic transformations of phenols.

Abstract:Phenols are versatile synthetic intermediates and key structural motifs in many natural products and biologically active compounds. We herein report a visible-light-induced aerobic oxidative hydroxylation of arylboronic acids/pinacol esters using air as oxidant and without using any catalysts and base, etc., additives, providing a green entry to a variety of phenols in a highly efficient and concise fashion. This novel reaction is enabled by photoactivation of an electron donor-acceptor complex, in which THF serves as both the solvent and electron donor. DFT studies indicated that the oxidation process involves a concerted hydrogen abstraction transfer from THF and dehydroxylation of boronic acid undergoing spin crossover from triplet to singlet to produce an active peroxoboronic acid intermidiate. Salient merits of this chemistry include broad substrate scope and excellent functional group tolerance, gram-scale synthesis, and versatile late-stage functionalizations as well as the use of air, visible light, and catalyst- and additive-free conditions. This strategy introduces a novel photoreaction mode with the aid of a solvent, offering a succinct and environmentally sustainable route for synthesizing phenols. The strong practicability and highly efficient access to modifying complex biorelevant molecules bode well for the potential applications of this chemistry in pharmaceutical chemistry.

Abstract:A new green synthesis of phenyl vinyl sulfoxide was described. The use of ethylene oxide, strong acid resin, and solid supported phosphotungstic acid made the process green and feasible to industrialize. The optimal condition was selected in the experiments. The total yield was 80.5% and it was eco-friendly. The catalysts were easy to recycle. According to the experiments, the oxidation mechanism was assumed to follow the complex–oxidation–decomplex fashion.

Abstract:An efficient and convenient method for the synthesis of phenols and aliphatic alcohols is described in this paper. The oxidative hydroxylation reaction of various organoboron compounds proceeded smoothly by employing H2O2 as the oxidant and citric acid as the catalyst in water at room temperature to produce phenols and aliphatic alcohols in satisfactory to excellent yields (up to 99% yield). Various synthetically useful functional groups, such as halogen atom, cyano, and nitro groups, remain intact during the oxidative hydroxylation. The developed catalytic system also could accommodate phenylboronic pinacol ester and potassium phenyltrifluoroborate to give the target product good yields.

Abstract:Phenoxathiin and its derivatives have attracted a great deal of interest due to their unique chemical and physical properties and their applications in fluorescent materials, antifungal activities and selective inhibitors. In the presence of copper supported on manganese oxide-based octahedral molecular sieves OMS-2 (CuOx/OMS-2), the heterogeneously catalytic synthesis of phenoxathiinan derivatives via intramolecular arylations of phenols with aryl bromide or aryl chloride has been achieved. TEM and XRD have confirmed the CuOx/OMS-2 catalyst has been successfully reused 8 times without a significant decrease in the yield, with simple filtration and washing as a means of separation. Abstract:It is well known that diazonium salts (ArN2+) react with phenols (Ar'OH) to give aryl diazoethers or diazo compounds, but their cross-coupling to exclusively access diaryl ethers is challenging. Herein we disclose the Cu-catalyzed etherification of phenols with aryl diazonium salts at room temperature, yielding diaryl ethers in moderate to excellent yields. The advantages of this protocol are mild reaction conditions, availability of reactants, operational simplicity, high tolerance of other functional groups and easy work-up. It's application to the synthesis of complex biological molecules is demonstrated. The reaction proceeds through single-electron transfer, extrusion of nitrogen, oxidative addition, and reductive elimination to give diaryl ether products.

Abstract:In the presence of triphenylphosphine, copper(II) chloride can catalyze an intermolecular ortho-acylation reaction of phenols with aryl aldehydes. Abstract:A novel and efficient metal-free approach to substituted phenols has been disclosed from simple and readily available cyclohexenones and cyclohexenone equivalents. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), a simple and common organic reagent, was employed as a mild oxidant in this I-2-catalysis, which significantly tolerates various substituents including some easily oxidizable or reducible functionalities. The challenging meta- and multiple-substituted phenols could be well prepared by this method. The metal-free and mild oxidation make this protocol very simple, practical, and easy to handle.

Abstract:Herein, we disclose the metal-free synthesis of arylamines via the direct amination of phenols using aminating reagents. This reaction procedure uses easy accessible aminating reagents and provides a versatile synthetic route to a broad range of arylamines with various functionalities in good to excellent yield. By using a two-step route of amination and oxidative coupling reaction, we synthesized three naturally occurring carbazole alkaloids: murrayafoline A, mukonine, and clausenine from two commercially available phenols.

Abstract:A simple, efficient and environmentally friendly method for iron or boron-catalyzed C-H arylthiation of substituted phenols at room temperature has been developed, and the corresponding diaryl sulfides were prepared in good to excellent yields. The protocol uses readily available 1-(substituted phenylthio)pyrrolidine-2,5-diones as the arylthiation reagents and inexpensive and environmentally friendly FeCl3 or BF3·OEt2 as the catalyst, moreover no ligands, additives or extrusion of air are required, and the reactions can be performed successfully at room temperature.

Abstract:The preparation of substituted phenols via a direct carbonyl desaturation is an intrinsic challenging task in modern synthetic chemistry. Herein, we develop a modular catalytic protocol for the synthesis of substituted phenols via the direct dehydrogenative aromatization of simple cyclohexanones in a metal‐free manner. A broad variety of substrates bearing an assortment of functional substituent groups are compatible with this protocol. Preliminary mechanistic investigations revealed that the reaction underwent a hydride leaving mechanism in the presence of a catalytic amount of tetrabutylammonium iodide. The current approach features simple operation, low reagent cost and green conditions. Insight gained from our studies is expected to advance general efforts towards the green synthesis of structurally diverse phenols via readily available raw materials, offering an alternative strategy for the carbonyl desaturation in organic synthesis.

Abstract:An efficient and novel methodology to access phenolic glycosides has been established by using copper-mediated coupling reaction of aryl boronic acids with hemiacetals. The reaction takes place normally in the presence of Cu(OAc)(2) (1.0 equiv.) and pyridine (2.0 equiv.) at 40 degrees C. Abstract:A new protocol for Pd(OAc)2-catalyzed reactions of different benzyl bromides and various arylboronic acids has been developed to form functionalized benzyl phenyl ethers. Abstract:2,6-Bis-arylated phenols are rarely reported and are synthetically challenging. Directed C-H functionalization reactions, using a directing group (DG), might provide a convenient solution to their synthesis. However, this strategy usually results in partial cleavage of the directing group, preventing further/second C-H activation cascades. Herein we report a general strategy that allows for the precise control of the oxidation pathways so that directing groups can be either preserved or cleaved. We found that N-phenoxyacetamides could undergo ortho-arylation reactions with or without an external oxidant, yielding products with different oxidation states, notably the rare bis-arylated phenols. Notably, a unique rhodacycle intermediate was isolated, characterized by X-ray crystallography, and confirmed to be an active catalyst. Switching between internal and external oxidation could be a general strategy in diverse directed C-H functionalization reactions to realize bis-functionalized products.

Abstract:2-(Phenylthio)phenols were successfully synthesized from simple phenols and aromatic halides by using dimethyl sulfoxide as the oxidant. The transformation was accomplished via tandem copper(I)-catalyzed C-S coupling/C-H functionalization employing the CuI/L [L = (E)-3-(dimethylamino)-1-(2-hydroxyphenyl)prop-2-en-1-one] catalyst system. The mechanism of the reaction was elucidated based on an isotope labeling strategy.

Abstract:Phenol is one of the most important fine chemical intermediates in the synthesis of plastics and drugs with a market size of ca . $30b 1 and the commercial production is via a two-step selective oxidation of benzene, requiring high energy input (high temperature and high pressure) in the presence of a corrosive acidic medium, and causing serious environmental issues 2,3,4,5 . Here we present a four-phase interface strategy with well-designed Pd@Cu nanoarchitecture decorated TiO 2 as a catalyst in a suspension system. The optimised catalyst leads to a turnover number of 16,000–100,000 for phenol generation with respect to the active sites and an excellent selectivity of ca . 93%. Such unprecedented results are attributed to the efficient activation of benzene by the atomically Cu coated Pd nanoarchitecture, enhanced charge separation, and an oxidant-lean environment. The rational design of catalyst and reaction system provides a green pathway for the selective conversion of symmetric organic molecules.
