Abstract:HF-based etching has been successful in mitigating damage precursors on the surface of fused silica optics used in high power lasers. However, wet etching generally leaves an etching trace leading to surface roughness, which seriously degrades laser beam quality (e.g., transmission loss and wave-front degradation). A way of addressing this issue is to apply plasma etching as a preprocessing step before HF etching, but so far very few studies have provided a practical scheme for engineering applications. In this work, we proposed a novel two-step scheme by combining reactive ion beam etching with dynamic chemical etching techniques. We demonstrate the combined scheme is capable of tracelessly mitigating the laser damage precursors on a fused silica surface. The 0% probability damage threshold obtained by combined etching is 1.4 times higher than that obtained by HF-based etching. The study opens a new approach towards high damage-resistant optics manufacturing and provides the potential possibility of exploring extreme interactions between high-power lasers and matter.
Laser-induced Damage Growth of Fused Silica at 351 Nm on a Large-Aperture High-Power Laser Facility

Abstract:Laser-induced damage of fused silica optics at 351 nm is a key factor limiting the output energy of high-power laser facility, especially the damage growth process. A comprehensive understanding of its damage growth behavior is of critical importance for high-power laser facility. Thus we study the laser-induced damage growth on the exit surface of fused silica under the subsequent illumination of 5 ns square pulses at 351 nm on a large-aperture high-power laser facility. Experiment is conducted with a 36 cm thick UV grade fused silica focus lens in clean atmosphere and at room temperature. 56 laser shots of 3 fluence in a range from 0.1 J/cm2 to 8.1 J/cm2 are fired during the experiment. And the damage initiation process and growth process are monitored and recorded with an online optics damage inspection instrument which has an optical resolution of about 50 m. Experimental results demonstrate that the sizes of exit-surface damage sites exponentially or linearly grow with laser shots and the damage growth rate increases with laser fluence. However, it is found that even under the same laser conditions the damage grow rate is not a fixed value, which means that besides the laser fluence other parameters also influence the damage grow process. In order to highlight some tendencies, we consider the single-shot damage growth rate and calculate the average of inside fluence bins. Statistical analysis shows that smaller sites tend to grow with larger growth rates than larger sites under the irradiation of the same laser fluence. This result indicates that damage growth rate is influenced by both laser fluence and damage site size. It suggests that the damage growth rule needs to be incorporated into a size-dependent growth effect. The result that higher growth rates are obtained for small damage sites may be related to the damage growth mechanism of fused silica. Damage crater of fused silica consists of a central core and numerous surrounding cracks. The defects in the central core absorb laser energy and yield plasma, then the plasma pressure will open the cracks on the periphery of the crater and lead to lateral and axial expansion of cracks which can be identified as damage growth. The fact that smaller sites grow faster than larger sites implies that smaller sites more efficiently couple laser energy into fracture energy. Our results have important implications for both the prediction of fused silica optics lifetime and the fundamental understanding of laser damage mechanism.

Abstract:The behavior of morphology and crack propagation during damage growth on the rear surface of fused silica is studied using a time-resolved shadow imaging technique. The mechanism and distribution characteristics of the plasma caused by energy deposition during the damage growth process and the effect on crack extension are studied. Finally, the properties of shock and stress waves and their effects on the damage growth are discussed. The results indicate that the damage growth process leads to significant differences in the transmission of shock and stress waves. The growth size of the damage site leads to a significant energy concentration deposition effect, which induces a local enhancement of the plasma that subsequently affects the crack distribution. It contributes to the transition from radial to circumferential crack and also further accelerates the damage growth process. The results could contribute to experimental support for further understanding of the physical mechanism of fused silica damage and the fundamental principles of damage growth.

Abstract:Laser-induced damage (LID) of fused-silica optics is a key factor limiting the output energy of high-power laser facility. In this paper, we study the LID growth of a large-aperture fused silica wedged focus lens (WFL) and vacuum window (VW) at high-fluence 351 nm. Results show the damage sites number on both optics increases gradually with shots first, then tends to stabilize at the subsequent shots. Besides, the VW has much more damage sites and the damage size grows faster than that on the WFL. According to the damage morphology and growth behavior, the damage sites are mainly ascribed to the initial defects on surfaces. And the fluence variation may be responsible for their damage performance differences.

Abstract:The laser damage threshold inside fused silica is dependent not only on the numerical aperture (NA) of the focusing objective, but also on the polarization of the incident femtosecond laser pulses. The damage threshold for circularly polarized beams is higher than that for linearly polarized beams when NA > 0.4, but the former was lower than the latter when NA < 0.4. The reverse might be due to different damage processes: laser induced damage at high NA and the self-focusing induced breakdown at low NA.

Abstract:The mechanical defect of fused silica caused by polishing process is the main reason for the decrease of laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT). In this paper, the artificial indentation was used to alternatively study the feature of machining defects and its laser damage properties. The Vickers indentation on fused silica surface were characterized with SEM, photoluminescence (PL) spectroscopy and photothermal absorption. Combined with hydrofluoric (HF) acid etching, the relationship between indentation intrinsic feature and LIDT was revealed. Crack and brittle fracture in the indentation contain various point defects, cause PL intensity and photothermal absorption increasing. By use of time resolved pump–probe imaging technology, we confirmed that energy absorption process during laser damage mostly initiates at the crack region. Shallow etching with HF acid (about 150 nm depth etched) removes a certain material and effectively reduces the density of point defects in the superficial layer of the indentation, consequential reduces the photothermal absorption and PL intensity, and finally improves LIDT.

Abstract:Fused silica has become the preferred optical material in the field of inertial confinement fusion (ICF) due to its excellent performance; however, these costly optical elements are vulnerable, and their manufacture is time-consuming. Therefore, the restoration of laser-induced damage for these optical elements is of great value. To restrain the post-restoration raised rim problem in the CO2 laser repair process to improve the restoration quality, the separate influences of key parameters of laser power, irradiation duration, and laser beam diameter on post-restoration pit morphology are compared in combined simulation and experimental studies. An optimized, patterned CO2 laser strategy is proposed and verified; the results indicate that, with the strategy, the rim height decreases from 2.6 μm to 1.52 μm, and maximal photo thermal absorption is decreased from 784.2 PPM to 209.43 PPM.

Abstract:In order to in-depth study the surface morphology formation mechanism and surface quality control methods of fused silica repaired sites, numerical simulation and experimental method were firstly used to analyze the process of CO2 laser rapid ablation mitigation, as well as the relationships between processing parameters, repaired angle and surface quality. Then the physical problems of the heat-affected zone, fictive temperature and structure relaxation under the irradiation of pulsed laser were studied through the mathematical model and Raman spectroscopy system. The studies found that the fixed depth morphology was formed starting from the third track’s laser scanning during the processing of fused silica by the pulsed laser that moved according to the arc trajectory. The bottom of the processed morphology presented uneven concave-convex features, which was different from the uniform topography formed by the laser linear scanning processing. The processing angle decreased as the trajectory indentation increased, while there was no clear variation law between the processed surface quality and the indentation. The thickness of the heat-affected zone characterized by the fictive temperature was consistent with the experiment, and it was proportional to the laser pulse width. The negative factors caused by the thermal effect in the laser repair process could be suppressed by reducing the laser pulse width. These studies can provide guidance for the optimization of the CO2 laser repair process and the improvement of the repaired surface quality.

Abstract:Fused silica optics, as key components in high - power laser systems, are prone to be damaged under short - pulse ultraviolet (UV) laser irradiation. CO 2 laser is usually used to repair the laser damage and extend the service life of optics. However, the anti - laser damage characteristics of repaired substrates sometimes can't meet the expectation. To facilitate better application of CO 2 laser repairing method, this work studied the CO 2 laser irradiating mechanism of fused silica in detail and investigated the damage characteristics of repaired optical surface through experiments. Firstly, finite element level - set (FELS) method is adopted to simulate CO 2 laser irradiating process. The simulation showed that CO 2 laser irradiation would cause molten material migration, vapor material deposition and affect the formation of residual stress. Various tests of morphology, residual stress, and photo - thermal absorption were conducted to study the changes of laser damage characteristics of repaired craters. The experimental results presented that molten materials migration and vapor materials re deposition occurred in CO 2 laser irradiation, which would promote the formation of residual stress, cause stronger laser absorption, or even induce laser damage. Through the experiment, accuracy of simulation was verified further. In this work, the CO 2 laser repairing mechanism of fused silica and laser damage characteristics of repaired optics are clarified through FELS simulation and experiments. Relative results can provide a certain technical support for the performance improvement of repaired fused silica optics.

Abstract:We report on the formation of laser-induced periodic annular surface structures on fused silica irradiated with multiple femtosecond laser pulses. This surface morphology emerges after the disappearance of the conventional laser induced periodic surface structures, under successive laser pulse irradiation. It is independent of the laser polarization and universally observed for different focusing geometries. Abstract:The subsurface damage of polished fused silica can be removed by various post-treatments to improve the strength of fused silica in high energy laser systems, but the evolution of physical and mechanical properties of fused silica after the removal of subsurface damage remains unclear. In this study, the physical and mechanical properties of fused silica are studied after various depths of subsurface damage removal by reactive ion etching process. The results show that as the etching depth increases, the concentration of metal ions contamination in the subsurface of fused silica decreases significantly, the water contact angle of fused silica decreased, while homogeneity of adsorbed water molecules on fused silica surface increases, especially at higher humidity conditions. Furthermore, the nanohardness and reduced modulus of fused silica increases with the etching depth. These results will be helpful for optimizing the manufacturing and lifetime of fused silica in high energy laser systems.

Abstract:The sputtering process of fused silica bombarded by Ar ion beam is simulated with the SRIM software. The effects of ion beam energy and incident angle on sputtering yield and surface damage are computed. Since ion beam sputtering will result in defects in fused silica, such as E′ color centers and other lattice defects and probably Argon bubbles, the optimized sputtering energy is selected below 1keV so that the projected range of Ar ions is less than 10Å. The experimental results show that the scratches in subsurface of fused silica can be smoothed obviously and better surface can be obtained as the optimized parameters are used for ion beam sputtering. The laser induced damage threshold of fused silica increases by about 18% after ion beam sputtering.

Abstract:The phenomena and mechanisms of energy deposition and plasma shielding during laser breakdown of transparent dielectrics deserve further discussion. In this work, the formation characteristics of 1064 nm ns pulsed laser-induced fused silica filamentary damage behavior during the bulk damage process were studied using the time-resolved pump-probe technique. The role of plasma shielding in the damage process was also further studied. The results indicate that the filamentary damage formed before the core damage. With the enhancement of laser energy, the filamentary damage length is stable in the initial stage and then begins to grow dramatically, and the core damage location moves towards the front surface of the fused silica. However, the plasma scattering and shielding effects in air and fused silica severely affect the damaged region when the laser energy is further enhanced. It causes rapid decay of the filamentary damage length, while the core damage moves along the optical axis to the rear surface of the fused silica. It was also found that the diameter of the filamentary damage was not significantly affected by the relatively small laser energy.

Abstract:During the grinding and polishing processes of hard-brittle fused silica optics, the defects would be inevitably formed on the finished surface. Fused silica has a high absorption coefficient for far-infrared lasers, which makes the CO2 laser processing to be the potential repairing technology for machining-induced defects on fused silica surfaces. In this work, using a low-power CO2 laser, a new repairing method to heal the machining-induced micro-defects on the surface of fused silica is proposed. Then, based on the nonlinear thermodynamic parameters of fused silica material, a thermal transfer model under CO2 laser irradiation and a dynamic defect healing model were established. On basis of that, the influence of CO2 laser parameters on the maximum surface temperature and the temperature distribution inside the silica material was investigated. It is found that, under the low-power and near-continuous CO2 laser irradiation, the maximum melting depth can be obtained under the non-evaporative condition. The defect healing process under various laser powers was explored as well. It is found that the defects would be more difficult to be healed under a laser with higher-power, smaller beam size or shorter pulse width. This work can provide theoretical guidance for the determination of the optimal parameters in the laser healing process and the optical manufacturing strategies of fused silica optics.

Abstract:Based on the finite element analysis method, establishment of a three dimensional fused silica lens model under the laser irradiation, and simulated the ideal fused silica surface temperature field and thermal stress field distribution situation, then the influences of subsurface deficiency on fused silica's laser damage threshold (LDT) were analyzed, which include scratch and impurity. It is found that the deficiencies in subsurface may affect the distribution of temperature field and thermal stress field of the fused silica surface, which makes the injected laser beams energy centralize on a small area around the deficiencies, thus leading to stress cracking of fused silica and LDT reduction.

Abstract:The damage problem of fused silica has always been one of the bottlenecks limiting the energy output of the high-power laser system. For optical components, the ionization breakdown by laser is the main factor causing damage, especially for laser plasma shock waves, which can cause large-scale fracture damage in fused silica. In this paper, the fused silica damage experiment was induced by a nanosecond laser, and the damage morphology of fused silica in the thickness range of 0.8–5.0 mm was obtained under the action of a 1–20 pulse. The damage size of fused silica decreases as the thickness of the material increases until the thickness of the material is greater than, or equal to, 1.4 mm. On the basis of theoretical analysis of a plasma shock wave, the coupling and transmission of shock wave in fused silica were studied by finite element method, and the magnitude and direction distribution of stress were obtained. By analyzing the fracture characteristics and Raman spectra of the three damaged regions of fused silica, the structural differences of a range of damage regions are analyzed, and the relationship between the macroscopic damage of fused silica and the microstructure is explained. The research results can provide a reference for understanding the characteristics and mechanism of damage characteristics induced by laser plasma shock wave.

Abstract:Subsurface damage of fused silica optics is one of the major factors restricting the performance of optical systems. The densification-affected deformation and fracture in fused silica under a sliding contact are investigated in this study, via three-dimensional finite element analysis (FEA). The finite element models of scratching with 70.3° conical and Berkovich indenters are established. A refined elliptical constitutive model is used to consider the influence of densification. The finite element models are experimentally verified by elastic recovery, and theoretically verified by hardness ratio. Results of densification and plastic deformation distributions indicate that the accuracy of existent sliding stress field models may be improved if the spherical/cylindrical yield region is replaced by an ellipsoid/cylindroid, and the embedding of the yield region is considered. The initiation sequence, and the locations and stages of radial, median, and lateral cracks are discussed by analyzing the predicted sliding stress fields. Median and radial cracks along the sliding direction tend to be the first cracks that emerge in the sliding and unloading stages, respectively. They coalesce to form a big median–radial crack that penetrates through the entire yield region. The fracture behavior of fused silica revealed in this study is essential in the low-damage machining of fused silica optics.

Abstract:Modern Physics Letters B, Ahead of Print. When irradiated by high-power lasers, fused silica optical component can be ablated, which seriously affects their laser-conducing capability and service life. Numerical simulations have been applied to investigate the ablation process, laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT), and propagation loss of fused silica optical component. The depth of the ablation crater increases linearly with the duration of irradiation, while the rate of development in the width of the ablation crater gradually decreases. The LIDT of the front surface of the fused silica optical component will significantly decrease, while the propagation loss of the fused silica component will have a considerable increase when the front surface of fused silica is damaged under laser irradiation. The propagation loss and the LIDT of the fused silica's front surface are 26.49, 21.19, 20.60, 16.83, and 16.41[math]GW/cm2 and 0.41, 1.02, 2.24, 3.46, and 5.31[math]dB, respectively, after 50, 100, 150, 200, and 250[math][math]s of ablation. This work provides novel opportunities for investigating the intrinsic mechanism of laser-induced damage to fused silica, and offers guidance for the future development of fused silica optical elements that are highly resistant to laser-induced damage.

Abstract:Nanotextures, being composed of an array of nanostructures, can manipulate the effective refractive index on the interface between air and optical substrates. Various optical properties, such as antireflection, antifogging, self-cleaning, enhanced absorption, have been achieved by nanotextures. Nanotextures have been considered to have great potential in the high-power laser system because of the single-material configuration. Here, we show design and fabrication of nanotextures on fused silica with high laser-induced damage threshold (LIDT) at the wavelengths 355 nm and 532 nm. The manipulation of light field intensity by nanostructures has been studied. When the average period of nanostructures is less than the 1/3 wavelength, the light field intensity in nanostructures can be lower than that in air. This is the theoretical basis for the high LIDT of fused silica nanotextures. Finally, we study laser induced damage performance of nanotextures. The experimental results show that the LIDT of fused silica can be improved by nanotextures. The LIDT of fused silica substrate was improved form 15J/cm2 to 22J/cm2 at the wavelengths 532 nm. This work promotes an application of nanotextures in high power/energy laser area.

Abstract:Timely repair of fused silica damage ensures the stable operation of high-power laser systems. In the traditional repair process, the material nearby the damaged area is gradually ablated with CO2 or femtosecond laser. Subsequently, homogenization and residual stress removal are required because of the microcracks and thermal accumulation generated with the ablation. As a result, the repair efficiency is greatly restricted. In this paper, a new method using in-volume, selective femtosecond laser-induced etching to repair the damage of fused silica is proposed. The region irradiated by femtosecond laser becomes more susceptible to the etching solution due to its constitutive characteristics having undergone chemical restructuring. In this way, material nearby the damaged area transparent to the laser radiation is modified locally inside the volume. A femtosecond laser is used to scan the damaged area with a 3D hollow trajectory. The applicable modification of fused silica occurs when the single pulse energy is approximately 2 μJ to 5 μJ, the repetition frequency is approximately 200 kHz to 500 kHz, and the scanning speed is approximately 10 mm/s. Then, the etching solution reacts quickly along the 3D profile of the modified path, and the damaged area is removed as a whole piece. This method can greatly reduce the workload of repair, and the etching process of fused silica is carried out synchronously. So, the etching efficiency is not affected by the number of damage points. In addition, the weak reaction between the etching solution and the substrate could homogenize the interface. It provides an efficient way to repair the surface damage of fused silica.
