Abstract:This paper demonstrates a highly effective method for fibre Bragg grating (FBG) inscription into a seven core fibre (7CF) and its application as an effective vector bending sensor. The development of multicore fibres (MCFs) and enabling the fabrication of FBGs into them result in a solution for multi-parameter measurements such as temperature/strain/bending/twist. The FBG in the central core of 7CF is on the neutral axis and therefore it is sensitive only to thermal and insensitive to deformational change, whereas the FBGs in the none-central cores that are evenly distributed over the 7CF cross-section can facilitate the measurement of structure deformation, such as bending, loading and twist. Furthermore, the FBGs in different cores respond to the physical perturbations differently in various orientations, offering vector sensing to measure both amplitude and direction of the structure change. The 7CF-FBG sensors are highly applicable for mechanical structures and flexible medical instruments.

Abstract:We present the fabrication of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in a trench-assisted heterogeneous multicore fiber (MCF). Two obviously different Bragg reflection peaks are obtained due to the slight difference of refractive indices between the center core and the outer cores. To investigate the reflections of the two FBGs simultaneously, only a segment of multimode fiber is inserted between the lead-in single mode fiber and the MCF. The experimental results confirm that the curvature sensitivity of the FBG in the outer core is a sinusoidal function of the bending orientation angle. The maximum linear curvature sensitivity is about 0.128 nm/m−1. The cross sensitivity to temperature or externally applied axial strain can be eliminated by discriminating the different responses of FBGs inscribed in outer cores and the center core. Thus this MCF with FBGs can be utilized as a directional bending sensor. Moreover, the proposed sensor offers several advantages, such as low cost and flexibility in fabrication.

Abstract:Due to the limitation of the lens effect of the optical fibre and the inhomogeneity of the laser fluence on different cores, it is still challenging to controllably inscribe different fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) in multicore fibres. In this article, we reported the FBG inscription in four core fibres (FCFs), whose cores are arranged in the corners of a square lattice. By investigating the influence of different inscription conditions during inscription, different results, such as simultaneous inscription of all cores, selectively inscription of individual or two cores, and even double scanning in perpendicular core couples by diagonal, are achieved. The phase mask scanning method, consisting of a 244nm Argon-ion frequency-doubled laser, air-bearing linear transfer stage and cylindrical lens and mirror setup, is used to precisely control the grating inscription in FCFs. The influence of three factors is systematically investigated to overcome the limitations, and they are the defocusing length between the cylindrical lens and the bare fibre, the rotation geometry of the fibre to the irritation beam, and the relative position of the fibre in the vertical direction of the laser beam.

Abstract:We demonstrated femtosecond laser inscription of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in a twin-core few-mode fiber (TC-FMF) for directional bend sensing. An FBG was selectively inscribed in one core of the TC-FMF by using an 800 nm femtosecond laser through a phase mask. Three resonance peaks at the wavelengths of 1549.05, 1547.65, and 1546.08 nm were observed in the reflection spectrum of the TC-FM FBG, and were generated by the LP01 mode resonance, LP01LP11 mode cross-coupling resonance, and LP11 mode resonance, respectively. Moreover, the TC-FM FBG exhibited the capability of directional bend sensing and achieved a maximum bend sensitivity of 37.41 pmm1. Hence, the proposed TC-FM FBG directional bend sensors could further be developed as promising solutions for detecting vectorial seismic or acoustic waves and 3-D shape sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the spectral characteristics and bend response of fiber Bragg gratings (FBGs) in all-solid photonic bandgap fibers (PBGFs). We inscribe FBGs within the secondary bandgap by ultraviolet (UV) side illumination and observe the couplings to backward core mode, guided LP01 and LP11 supermodes and radiative LP02 supermodes. The mechanisms of these resonant couplings in the FBG are described in detail. We demonstrate that only those supermodes with certain phase relationships and symmetric mode field profiles are responsible for the supermode resonances. When the fiber grating is bent, the guided supermode resonances become chirped as a result of the strain gradient over the fiber cross section. Meanwhile, the core resonance is enhanced, due to more energy of the core mode distributed in the cladding rods. The bend response is direction dependant owing to the nonuniform UV-induced average index raises and index modulation over the high- index rod lattice. (c) 2007 Optical Society of America.

Abstract:A vector bending fiber sensor based on core-by-core inscribed fiber Bragg gratings in a twin-core fiber has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated. An in-fiber integrated vector bending sensor is realized by using the thermal diffusion technique to fabricate the coupler. The characteristics of the coupler fabricated by thermal diffusion are simulated and experimented. By inscribing fiber Bragg gratings with different reflection wavelengths in the two cores of a symmetrical twin-core fiber, the curvature sensitivity can be enhanced by tracking the wavelength difference between the fiber Bragg gratings of the two cores. The measured bending sensitivity of the fiber Bragg grating ranges from −161.6 pm/m −1 to +165.5 pm/m −1 . The differential sensitivity of the two cores is twice that of a conventional single grating, and the temperature-induced crosstalk is also reduced. The bending sensor proposed in this paper has the advantages of high integration, enhancing the sensitivity and two-dimensional orientation recognizability, and reducing temperature crosstalk, which can be a promising candidate for structural health monitoring or wearable artificial electronics applications.

Abstract:On-line fabricated fiber Bragg grating (FBG) array and its sensing potentials have attracted plenty of attention in recent years. In this paper, FBG arrays are written on-line on a two-mode fiber, and this two-mode fiber Bragg grating (TM-FBG) is further experimentally investigated for temperature and curvature sensing. The responses of this sensor were characterized by 11.2 pm/°C and −0.21 dB/m−1 for temperature and curvature, respectively. Based on the measurements, a dual-parameter fiber sensing system was developed, which can realize the quasi-distributed, simultaneous detection of temperature and curvature, making it suitable for structural health monitoring or perimeter security.

Abstract:A sensitivity-enhanced two-dimensional bending sensor using four-core fiber (FCF) transition to realized single-channel demodulation of seven-core fiber Bragg grating (FBG) is proposed. A section of FCF was added between the single-mode fiber (SMF) and the seven-core fiber (SCF), and the thermal diffusion technology (TDT) was used so that the signal of the SMF could be transmitted to the three side cores of the SCF through the FCF. Then, a 45° reflective circular cone (45° RCC) is fabricated at the end of the SCF, enabling the coupling of the symmetrical side core signals of the SCF. By inscribing the FBGs with different reflection wavelengths on the side cores of the SCF, the signals of each side core can be distinguished during single-channel demodulation. Monitoring the reflection wavelength shifts of the FBGs on the SCF can realize two-dimensional bending measurements. Furthermore, through the differential operation of the symmetrical side cores, the bending sensitivity can be enhanced while eliminating temperature crosstalk. The proposed sensor with high integration, high sensitivity, and reduced crosstalk, is expected to be applied in the field of structural inspection or interventional medical treatment.

Abstract:We present a direct fiber Bragg grating (FBG) inscribed in a dual-core photonic crystal fiber (DCPCF) using a conventional FBG inscription setup. The DCPCF-FBG generates a distinctive reflection spectrum that exhibits both a broad reflected peak and a significant sidelobe on its short wavelength side only. We systematically characterized the temperature and strain sensitivities of the DCPCF-FBG, and demonstrated its temperature and strain characteristics. The response of the DCPCF-FBG to bending was also investigated, which distinguishes it from a conventional FBG.

Abstract:In this paper, we demonstrate a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with a wide range and a comb with continuous cladding mode resonances inscribed in non-photosensitive single mode fibers using a femtosecond laser and a phase mask. The FBG is inscribed in the core and cladding, exciting a series of cladding modes in transmission. The birefringence induced by this FBG structure offers significant polarization-dependence for cladding modes, thus allowing the vector fiber twist to be perceived. By measuring the peak-to-peak differential intensity of orthogonally polarized cladding mode resonances, the proposed sensor presents totally opposite intensity response in the anticlockwise direction for the torsion angle ranging from -45° to 45°. The cladding mode comb approximately covers wavelengths over the O-, E-, S-, and C-bands in transmission. The cutoff cladding mode of air can be observed in the spectrum. Thus, the sensible refractive index range is estimated to be from 1.00 to 1.44. Temperature responsivity of the grating is also characterized. The proposed device potentially provides new solutions to the various challenges of physical vector and bio-chemical parameters sensing.

Abstract:We present a novel vector bending sensor that enables simultaneous measurement of the bending response in six outer cores of a seven-core fiber (SCF) without the need for fan-in/fan-out configurations. Utilizing femtosecond laser technology, we inscribe seven Fiber Bragg Gratings (FBGs) with distinct wavelengths across the SCF cores. The sensor’s tapering process, tailored for the bending sensing scenario, effectively combines the reflection peaks of the FBGs into one detection channel, thereby substantially improving the measurement efficiency. Our experimental results demonstrate a strong directional dependence of the bending response, with a maximum sensitivity of 127 pm/m−1. The bending angle and curvature magnitude are reconstructed by analyzing the wavelength shifts of any two non-diagonal outer cores, offering a versatile solution for real-time monitoring applications. This sensor design, by eliminating the need for additional fan-in/fan-out devices, simplifies the system architecture and reduces both measurement time and sensor size, making it highly suitable for applications in precision manufacturing, environmental monitoring, and robotics.

Abstract:A novel fiber Bragg grating (FBG) structure based on an eccentric core fiber (ECF) and a single-mode fiber (SMF) was proposed and experimentally demonstrated for distinguishing the bending effect from the axial strain effect and measuring the pure directional bending. The structure is fabricated by writing a FBG on the fusion splice junction between an ECF and a SMF. The FBG formed on the ECF-SMF junction has two different resonant peaks because of the different refractive indices of the two fibers. The peak relating to the ECF is sensitive to both directional bending and axial strain, while the peak corresponding to the SMF is only sensitive to strain. By using the unique FBG structure, one can directly know whether a bending is accompanied by an axial strain, and can obtain both the direction and curvature of the bending. Experimental results show that the bending sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF part are 49.3 and 50.3 ${\rm{pm}}/{{\rm{m}}^{ - 1}}$ at directions of 0 and 180, respectively, and the strain sensitivities of the FBG in the ECF and SMF are 0.74 and 0.70 pm/, respectively.

Abstract:Fiber Bragg grating (FBG) has been widely used in many fields for the measurement of temperature, strain, and other parameters, but single-mode FBG has a cross-sensitivity problem between temperature and strain. In this article, a new scheme is proposed to solve the problem by using parallel core–cladding FBGs, whose grating areas are located at the interface region of the core and cladding of the fiber. The sensing principle of parallel core–cladding FBGs for the simultaneous measurement of temperature and strain is theoretically analyzed. The femtosecond laser point-by-point method of the parallel core–cladding FBGs is experimentally investigated. Two parallel FBGs, namely, core FBG and cladding FBG, are formed efficiently and conveniently by a single time inscription. Two transmission peaks have been observed, which are excited by the core mode and the cladding mode. The experiment results demonstrated that the proposed compact sensor can detect the temperature with sensitivity of 11.043 pm/°C and strain with sensitivity of 1.2101 pm/ up to , and the relative errors of temperature and strain are less than 5.8% and 8.3%, respectively. The proposed parallel core–cladding FBGs are much more compact as one FBG element compared with the conventional structure with two cascaded FBGs or parallel FBGs. The parallel core–cladding FBGs can overcome the cross-sensitivity problem of single-mode FBG, which has great application value and potential in fiber sensing fields for dual-parameter.

Abstract:Soft glass fibers can transmit the wavelengths longer than 2μm, which can realize the sensors in mid-infrared waveband. Compared to the FBG sensors based on silica fibers, FBG sensors based on soft glass fibers have the advantages of high sensitivity. For the first time, the sensing characteristics of FBGs based on different soft glass fibers are analyzed and compared. The sensing characteristics of temperature, strain and pressure of FBGs based on tellurite, chalcogenide and fluoride fibers are numerically simulated and compared. By analyzing and comparing a series of sensitivity curves of FBGs, we get some conclusions. For temperature sensing, the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber has the highest sensitivity coefficient of 175.7 pm/°C, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest sensitivity coefficient of 11.3 pm/°C. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of temperature. For strain sensing, the FBG based on the β-ZnS (CVD) fiber has the highest strain sensitivity coefficient of 2.76 pm/με, while the FBG based on the silica fiber has the lowest strain sensitivity coefficient of 1.22 pm/με. The Bragg wavelengths are red-shifted with the increase of strain. For pressure sensing, the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the As2S3 fiber is the highest and the Bragg wavelength has is red-shifted; the pressure sensitivity of the FBG based on the silica fiber is the lowest and the Bragg wavelength is blue-shifted. These results will be significant for optical sensing and fiber lasers in mid-infrared waveband.

Abstract:In this work, we propose a fiber Bragg grating (FBG)-based sensor for curvature measurements. Two gratings are inscribed through the protective coating in a specialty optical fiber using focused femtosecond laser pulses and point-by-point direct writing technology. One grating is inscribed on the central core adjacent to an air channel, while the other is inscribed on the eccentric core. The bending characteristics of the two-core fiber strongly depend on the bending direction due to the asymmetry of the fiber cores. A bending sensitivity of 58 pm/m−1 is achieved by the FBG in the eccentric fiber core over the curvature range of 0–50 m−1. Temperature and humidity cross-sensitivity could be significantly reduced by analyzing the differences in peak shifts between the two gratings. The sensor features a large sensing range and good robustness due to the presence of its protective buffer coating, which makes it a good candidate for curvature sensing in engineering fields.

Abstract:We report on the fabrication of a fiber Bragg grating (FBG) with multiple resonances in a two-dimensional waveguide array microstructured optical fiber containing 91 cores. Theoretical investigation reveals that these resonances originate from the identical and nonidentical mode couplings between forward-propagating and backward-propagating LP0m-like (m=1, 2, 3; LP refers to linearly polarized) supermodes. Since both the central wavelength and minimum transmission of these resonant dips respond differently to curvature and axial strain, this FBG can be applied in the simultaneous measurement of curvature and axial strain.
