Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:An echelle diffraction grating (de)multiplexer with arc shaped grating teeth, based on a multi-guide vertical integration platform in InP is presented. The device can be applied to the 100GBASE-LR4 Ethernet systems, the crosstalk is better than -19 dB. By adjusting grating facets, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth is increased to 2.2 nm compared with 1.7 nm in a conventional design with a loss penalty less than 2 dB. And the nonuniformity is reduced form 1.7 dB to 0.68 dB.

Abstract:An optical wavelength demultiplexer with the etched diffraction grating (EDG) on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material is demonstrated. Fabricated by the wet-anisotropic-etching method, 90° turning mirrors are used to bend waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16×2.5 mm 2 . The crosstalk is below −16 dB. The on-chip loss is about 9.97 dB, which is composed of about 8.72 dB excess loss and 1.25 dB diffraction loss. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is below 0.13 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.35 dB. The sources of the crosstalk and loss are discussed in details, and the related measures to improve the performance are also presented.

Abstract:A compact optical demultiplexer with etched diffraction grating (EDG) is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material. Several 90degrees turning mirrors are used to bend the waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16 x 1.7 mm(2). The crosstalk is about -18 dB. The on-chip loss is about 18.2 dB, which is composed of about 16.9 dB excess loss and 1.3 dB diffraction loss. Measures to improve the performance are discussed.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:Polarization dependence is an inherent challenge for wavelength-division multiplexing transceivers on silicon photonic platforms, causing severe problems with polarization-dependent losses and hindering the implementation of monolithic integrated receivers. In this study, we developed a polarization-insensitive demultiplexer on a silicon nitride (SiN) platform, which provides a promising solution to the polarization challenge. Comprising an etched diffraction grating (EDG) and a polarization beam splitter (PBS), the demultiplexer can achieve polarization insensitivity by introducing an additional optical path difference for polarization compensation. The fabricated demultiplexers were experimentally measured to have minimum insertion losses of 1.5 dB, cross talks of better than -25 dB, and polarization-dependent losses of better than 0.7 dB. This is the first, to the best of our knowledge, proposed solution for a polarization-insensitive EDG demultiplexer combined with a PBS on a SiN platform.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:Ultra-compact on-chip spectrometers with high resolution and large bandwidth play a crucial role in miniaturized spectroscopic analysis systems. Here we present a novel polarization-insensitive micro-spectrometer with high resolution and large bandwidth based on a ( N + 3) × ( N + 3) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. The proposed AWG can be viewed as two same 3 × N AWGs with each one having three input waveguides with channel spacing of 4/3 Δ λ and N output waveguides with channel spacing of Δ λ . The three input waveguides are time division multiplexed, i.e., they are excited one by one in sequence. As a result, combining all spectral responses of each input, a micro-spectrometer with channel wavelength spacing enhanced to one-third Δ λ and channel number enlarged to 3 × ( N – 2) is achieved, only using N output channels. The polarization diversity scheme is utilized to address the polarization sensitive issue of silicon nano-waveguide, i.e., the AWG operates at a counter-propagating manner to process each polarization, respectively. In experiment, we demonstrate a micro-spectrometer with 81 channels and channel wavelength spacing of 0.4 nm by employing a 32 × 32 AWG on the SOI platform. The footprint of the fabricated micro-spectrometer is only 1.1 × 2.35 mm 2 . Experimental results show that the spectrometer has on-chip losses ranging from –5.8 to –2.5 dB, noise level of better than 17 dB, polarization dependent wavelength shift (PD λ ) of less than 0.07 nm and polarization dependent loss (PDL) of less than 1.5 dB, for all 81 wavelength channels. The resolution of the micro-spectrometer is mainly dependent on the 3-dB bandwidth of each channel and is simulated to be ∼0.65 nm. The proposed ultracompact and polarization insensitive high-resolution on-chip spectrometer provides a very promising approach for achieving miniaturized spectrometer-on-a-chip with good performance for applications such as in fiber Bragg grating (FBG) sensor readout unit and optical waveguide sensor systems.

Abstract:Polarization-compatible receivers are indispensable in transceivers used for wavelength division multiplexing optical communications, as light polarization is unpredictable after transmission through network fibers. However, the strong waveguide birefringence makes it difficult to realize a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer in a silicon photonic receiver. Here, we utilized the birefringence effect for simultaneously demultiplexing wavelengths and polarizations, and experimentally demonstrated a polarization-independent wavelength demultiplexer with a single device on a SiPh platform. The principle was validated on an etched diffraction grating, which successfully split the arbitrarily polarized light containing four wavelengths into eight channels with single-polarization and single-wavelength signals. Polarization-dependent losses of 0.5–1.8 dB, minimum insertion loss of 0.5 dB, and crosstalks lower than −30 dB were experimentally measured for the fabricated etched diffraction grating. Thus, a promising general solution was developed for implementing polarization-independent wavelength division multiplexing receivers and other polarization-independent devices on photonics platforms with birefringent waveguide devices.

Abstract:In this paper,various silicon photonic devices designed for wavelength/mode/polarization multiplexing/demultiplexing are proposed,including arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and etched diffraction grating (EDG),mode Mux/DeMux devices,polarization splitting grating coupler,and polarization splitting rotating device. With these novel devices,the following results can be achieved: (1) AWG could be formed by single step etching process; (2) EDG insertion loss is greatly reduced; (3) mode splitting device bandwidth increases,while the insertion loss is reduced; (4) the coupling efficiency of the polarization splitting grating coupler is effectively improved;(5) the insertion loss and bandwidth of the polarization splitting rotating device are also significantly improved. It is believed that the Mux/DeMux technologies on dimensions of wavelength/mode/polarization will be strongly supported by these silicon photonic devices,which are compatible with complementary metal oxide semiconductory (CMOS)-180 nm processing technologies.

Abstract:A simple and low-crosstalk 1 × 4 silicon mode (de)multiplexer based on multimode grating-assisted-couplers is proposed. Mode transitions can be flexibly controlled by designing the grating period at the phase-matching condition. Due to the contra-directional coupling, precise control of the coupling strength and the coupling length are not needed in the system. Calculation results show that the insertion loss and the 3 dB bandwidths of the device are 0.2 dB and 3.7 nm, 0.34 dB and 7.6 nm, and 0.21 dB and 11.8 nm for the channels which (de)multiplex to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd modes of the bus waveguide, respectively.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultra-compact birefringence- compensated arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) triplexer for application in optical network units (ONUs) based on silicon nanowire waveguides. The cross-order design is employed to cover three operating wavelengths of 1310, 1490 and 1550 nm for the triplexer. The large birefringence of the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguide is compensated by using angled star coupler design in combination with different diffraction orders for TE and TM modes. The device has a small footprint of only 0.18×0.12 mm2. The excess loss for TM polarization for three channels is 3 ~ 4 dB and the crosstalk is better than -18 dB. The polarization dependent wavelength shift (PDλ) is reduced from about 370 nm to less than 2.5 nm for wavelength channels at 1490-1550 nm.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate an optical demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator material employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG). We substitute the bent waveguide array in the traditional AWG configuration by adopting the structure of the turning-mirror-integrated straight waveguides. Description of the design procedure is provided. The crosstalk of the fabricated 1/spl times/4 AWG is better than -23.1 dB. The typical on-chip insertion loss is about -8 dB and the output nonuniformity is less than 0.4 dB. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is about 0.068 nm.

Abstract:In this paper, optical demultiplexers (Demuxs) with the employment of the turning-mirror-integrated (TMI) arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) are designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) materials. The waveguide array in the conventional AWG configuration is replaced by a TMI waveguide array. The devices are more compact, while the performance is comparable to that of a conventional AWG fabricated on the same wafer. The adjacent and nonadjacent crosstalks are lower than -19 and -23 dB, respectively, and the typical on-chip loss is less than 8.8 dB. Abstract:The 400-channel 25-GHz-spacing SOI-based planar waveguide demultiplexer employing a concave grating across C- and L-bands is proposed in this paper. For the high polarization dependence, the waveguides are designed for supporting the TE mode only. To reduce the spherical aberration of the concave grating, the values of the maximum half divergent angle of the light source and minimum effective half width of the fundamental mode of the ridge waveguide are determined. We use a design example to show the spectral characteristics of the proposed design. Simulation results show that the proposed design provides better spectral characteristics and smaller die size.

Abstract:We demonstrate a polarization insensitive arrayed-input spectrometer using echelle diffraction grating (EDG) for hyperspectral imaging. The EDG consists of 65 input waveguides and 129 output waveguides, allowing spectral measurements of 65 image pixels at a time when used in combination with a micro-electromechanical system micro mirror array. The spectral resolution reaches 7.8 nm for wavelengths ranging from 1250 to 1700 nm. The measured loss is -2dB, and the crosstalk is lower than -20dB. The 3 mu m silicon-on-insulator platform provides the device with polarization insensitive characteristics. The chip size is only 6mm x 10 mm.
