Abstract:We present an 8×500GHz echelle grating multiplexer on InGaAsP/InP platform in 1550nm wavelength band. The device insertion loss of the device is 8.2dB and the adjacent channel crosstalk ranges from 20dB to 25dB.

Abstract:We propose a nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexer with silicon waveguide, which is realized by grating assisted coupler employing magneto-optical nonceciprocal phase shift. This device can achieve different adding or dropping peak wavelengths when light is launched in the forward-directed and backward-directed propagation. The calculation results show that the shift of the different dropping peak wavelengths is up to 0.7nm. Also, we demonstrate its applications for narrowband optical isolators and circulators. This work demonstrates that on-chip nonreciprocal optical add-drop multiplexers and optical isolations can be implemented with the proposed device, which has promising applications for optical communication systems and photonic integrated devices.

Abstract:An echelle diffraction grating (de)multiplexer with arc shaped grating teeth, based on a multi-guide vertical integration platform in InP is presented. The device can be applied to the 100GBASE-LR4 Ethernet systems, the crosstalk is better than -19 dB. By adjusting grating facets, the 3-dB spectral bandwidth is increased to 2.2 nm compared with 1.7 nm in a conventional design with a loss penalty less than 2 dB. And the nonuniformity is reduced form 1.7 dB to 0.68 dB.

Abstract:We present detailed modeling and experimental results for an improved design of an InGaAsP/lnP wavelength demultiplexer based on a monolithically integrated Rowland circle grating. The design incorporated ten wavelength channels at 1.55 mu m with a uniform spacing of 2 nm. The total on-chip loss was about 10 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels was as low as -25 dB. It was shown that low-loss etched turning mirrors can reduce the total on-chip loss by about 4 dB compared to traditional 90 degrees curved multimode waveguides. By replacing standard hat grating facets with retro-reflecting V-shaped facets in the echelle grating, the loss was further reduced by 4 dB, Polarization independent operation within a passband of 0.5 nm was achieved by using multimode output waveguide, The potential sources producing the crosstalk have been analyzed and fabrication modifications for further improvement are suggested.

Abstract:An eight-channel 400 GHz-spacing planar waveguide multi/demultiplexer employing etched diffraction grating is designed and fabricated on a silicon-on-insulator platform with a 220 nm thick top layer. The design parameters are optimized by scalar diffraction simulation to obtain optimal performance with a small footprint of only 0.75 mm(2). A bi-level adiabatic taper is used to connect the input/output waveguide and the slab waveguide so as to reduce the insertion loss and the broadening of the diffraction angle of the propagating light. The device is fabricated in a two-step process with E-beam lithography and dry etching, and the alignment accuracy is 10 nm or even better. Measurements show that the insertion loss is 7.35 dB and the crosstalk between adjacent channels is about -15 dB. Ways to improve the performance are also investigated in detail.

Abstract:An optical wavelength demultiplexer with the etched diffraction grating (EDG) on the silicon-on-insulator (SOI) material is demonstrated. Fabricated by the wet-anisotropic-etching method, 90° turning mirrors are used to bend waveguides, and the size of the EDG-based demultiplexer is minimized to only 16×2.5 mm 2 . The crosstalk is below −16 dB. The on-chip loss is about 9.97 dB, which is composed of about 8.72 dB excess loss and 1.25 dB diffraction loss. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is below 0.13 nm, and the polarization-dependent loss is about 0.35 dB. The sources of the crosstalk and loss are discussed in details, and the related measures to improve the performance are also presented.

Abstract:We propose an ultra-compact novel wavelength multiplexer employing a (N + 1) × (N + 1) arrayed waveguide grating (AWG) and a polarization-combiner-rotator (PCR) on the SOI platform, to realize a multiplexing for 2N wavelengths with a spacing of Δλ. The (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG works at a bidirectional way to provide two groups of N × 1 wavelength multiplexing with each group having a channel spacing of 2×Δλ, and the central wavelengths of all input channels in one group have a wavelength shift of Δλ with respect to those in the other group. The double channel spacing results in a significant decrease on the footprint of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG-based multiplexer compared with a conventional 2N × 1 AWG multiplexer with the same wavelength spacing Δλ. Due to the fact that a single mode fiber is insensitive to the polarization of input light, if we consider short reach datacom applications such as 100/400 GbE, the two separate multiplexing outputs of the (N + 1) × (N + 1) AWG can be combined as one output with one half wavelengths working at TE polarization and the other at TM polarization by employing a low loss and broadband PCR. In the experiment, we demonstrate a 16 × 200 GHz multiplexer based on a 9 × 9 AWG. The experimental results show that the on-chip loss of the fabricated multiplexer is 2.7 dB and the loss uniformity is 0.5 dB. The 1-dB and 3-dB bandwidths are >0.56 nm (i.e., 35% of the wavelength spacing) and >1.1 nm (i.e., 69% of the wavelength spacing), respectively. They can also be further increased by decreasing the gap between adjacent input waveguides at the interfaces of star couplers of the designed AWG without inducing an excess loss. The proposed multiplexer has great potential for application to future super large capacity (> Tb/s) data transmission systems.

Abstract:The use of uncoated facets on the echelle grating in a monolithic InP WDM demux leads to a reflection loss of 5.65 dB for an index of refraction of approximately 3.18. This loss can be largely eliminated by coating the out of plane facet with gold, but it involves another processing step. An alternative is to use total internal reflecting (retro-reflecting) facets. We have fabricated a WDM demultiplexer in InP for use at 1550 nm using an echelle with retro-reflecting facets and have compared its performance to another demux on the same wafer using an echelle with flat facets.

Abstract:In this paper, optical demultiplexers (Demuxs) with the employment of the turning-mirror-integrated (TMI) arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG) are designed and fabricated on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) materials. The waveguide array in the conventional AWG configuration is replaced by a TMI waveguide array. The devices are more compact, while the performance is comparable to that of a conventional AWG fabricated on the same wafer. The adjacent and nonadjacent crosstalks are lower than -19 and -23 dB, respectively, and the typical on-chip loss is less than 8.8 dB. Abstract:An arrayed-waveguide grating multiplexer is demonstrated, which is successfully designed and fabricated. A wavelength channel spacing was 1.6nm, a crosstalk of less than -20dB and the insertion loss was 7-12dB around 1.55mum. Abstract:We report on recent results on InGaAsP-InP-based Rowland circle grating demultiplexers. Simulations and experiments on the effects of inherent fabrication errors such as the pixelation effect, switching errors, and field distortion in the grating patterning process are presented. These results suggest sources of the cross talk in the wavelength demultiplexers and ways to reduce them as well as the limitations of currently available technologies.

Abstract:A novel method for designing a cyclic echelle grating wavelength router with uniform loss and flat passband is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. A 4×4 cyclic wavelength router with a channel spacing of 400 GHz at 1550 nm wavelength band is designed and fabricated in InP. Measurement results show that the loss of 16 input-output combinations varies from 9 to 19.3 dB in a conventional design, with a nonuniformity of 10.3 dB, while the 1-dB spectral bandwidth is only 0.3 nm. By rotating angles of grating facets according to an appropriately designed distribution function, the loss nonuniformity is reduced to 1.5 dB, and a flat-top spectral response with 1 dB bandwidth of 1.0 nm is achieved simultaneously.

Abstract:An etched diffraction grating wavelength router (EDGR) with arc-shaped grating teeth is proposed,and the loss uniformity and spectral passband of the device can be improved simultaneously with proper design for the shape of the grating teeth.A 4 × 4 EDGR with 400 GHz channel spacing,centered at 1550 nm and based on InP platform is designed.Simulation results show that the loss difference of all channels is reduced from 8.1 dB to 0.8 dB.The shape of the spectral response is flat-top and the 1 dB bandwidth is increased from 0.3 nm to 1.6 nm.By adjusting the design parameters,the loss uniformity,bandwidth and entire loss of the device can be balanced.Experimental results show that the loss difference of all channels is 3.1 dB and 1 dB bandwidth is 1.1 nm.The crosstalk of the device is better than-12 dB.The validity of this method is verified.This method does not need to increase the chip size or add extra elements,which can be applied to etched diffraction gratings in any material platform.

Abstract:In this letter, we demonstrate an optical demultiplexer on the silicon-on-insulator material employing the turning-mirror-integrated arrayed-waveguide grating (AWG). We substitute the bent waveguide array in the traditional AWG configuration by adopting the structure of the turning-mirror-integrated straight waveguides. Description of the design procedure is provided. The crosstalk of the fabricated 1/spl times/4 AWG is better than -23.1 dB. The typical on-chip insertion loss is about -8 dB and the output nonuniformity is less than 0.4 dB. The polarization-dependent central wavelength shift is about 0.068 nm.
