Abstract:A highly sensitive carbon monoxide (CO) trace gas sensor based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) was demonstrated. A high-power distributed feedback (DFB), continuous wave (CW) 2.33 μm diode laser with an 8.8 mW output power was used as the QEPAS excitation source. By optimizing the modulation depth and adding an optimum micro-resonator, compared to a bare quartz tuning fork (QTF), a 10-fold enhancement of the CO-QEPAS signal amplitude was achieved. When water vapor acting as a vibrational transfer catalyst was added to the target gas, the signal was further increased by a factor of ~7. A minimum detection limit (MDL) of 11.2 ppm and a calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 1.8 × 10−5 cm−1W/√Hz were obtained for the reported CO-QEPAS sensor.

Abstract:In this paper, a sensitive quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS)-based carbon monoxide (CO) sensor using a 2.3 mu m continuous wave (CW) distributed feedback (DFB) fibercoupled antimonide diode laser is demonstrated for the first time. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy and a second-harmonic detection technique are used to reduce the sensor background noise and simplify the data process. Water vapor is added into a 1000 ppm CO:N-2 gas mixture to improve the vibrational-translational relaxation rate of the analyzed CO for the purpose of enhancement of the QEPAS signal. After the modulation depth is optimized, a minimum detection limit of 43.3 ppm at the 4294.6 cm(-1) absorption line is achieved when the modulation depth is set to 0.32 cm(-1).

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) technology was invented lately. Therefore it is an innovative method for trace gas detection compared with other existing technologies. In this paper, trace gas detection for carbon monoxide (CO) based on QEPAS technology is demonstrated. In order to realize high sensitive detection, a novel mid-infrared, state-of-art 4.6 m high power, continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback (DFB) quantum cascade laser (QCL) with single mode output is used as the laser exciting source. Therefore, the strongest absorption of fundamental frequency band of CO is achieved. Using the wavelength modulation spectroscopy and the 2nd harmonic detection, the influence of laser wavelength modulation depth on QEPAS signal level is investigated. Two important parameters of Q-factor and resonant frequency for quartz tuning fork as a function of gas pressure are measured. After optimization of the modulation depth of laser wavelength, the gas pressure of CO:N2 gas mixture and the improving speed of the V-R relaxation rate through the addition of water vapor, a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 1.95 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) for CO at gas pressure of 500 Torr and modulation depth of 0.2 cm-1 is achieved with a 1 sec acquisition time and the addition of 2.6% water vapor in the analyzed gas mixture. Finally, the influence of level lifetime of the targeted gas on QEPAS signal amplitude is investigated by comparison of CO QEPAS sensor performance using two different CO absorption lines of R(5) and R(6) located at 2165.6 cm-1 and 2169.2 cm-1respectively. The expression of the QEPAS signal amplitude is modified by adding the level lifetime parameter for a better precision.

Abstract:An ultra-sensitive and selective quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor platform was demonstrated for detection of carbon monoxide (CO) and nitrous oxide (N2O). This sensor used a state-of-the art 4.61 μm high power, continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) operating at 10°C as the excitation source. For the R(6) CO absorption line, located at 2169.2 cm(-1), a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 1.5 parts per billion by volume (ppbv) at atmospheric pressure was achieved with a 1 sec acquisition time and the addition of 2.6% water vapor concentration in the analyzed gas mixture. For the N2O detection, a MDL of 23 ppbv was obtained at an optimum gas pressure of 100 Torr and with the same water vapor content of 2.6%. In both cases the presence of water vapor increases the detected CO and N2O QEPAS signal levels as a result of enhancing the vibrational-translational relaxation rate of both target gases. Allan deviation analyses were performed to investigate the long term performance of the CO and N2O QEPAS sensor systems. For the optimum data acquisition time of 500 sec a MDL of 340 pptv and 4 ppbv was obtained for CO and N2O detection, respectively. To demonstrate reliable and robust operation of the QEPAS sensor a continuous monitoring of atmospheric CO and N2O concentration levels for a period of 5 hours were performed.

The experimental results showed that such a sensor had an excellent linear response to the optical power and gas concentration. At 1 s integration time, a minimum detection limit (MDL) for CO detection of 9.8 ppm was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor system was evaluated with an Allan deviation analysis. When the integration time was 1100 s, the MDL improved to be 530 ppb. The detection performance of such a PAS-based CO sensor can be further improved when a laser with a higher output power and increasing optical absorption times is used.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor with a fixed wavelength quantum cascade laser (FW-QCL) was demonstrated. The emission wavelength of the FW-QCL at 4.42 μm in the mid-infrared spectral region matched a fundamental CO2 absorption line. Amplitude modulation of the laser intensity was used to match the resonant photoacoustic (PA) cell. The noise from the background was reduced with the correlation demodulation technique. The experimental results showed that the sensor had excellent signal stability and a concentration linear response. When the integration time was 1 s, a 1σ minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.84 parts per million (ppm) for CO2 detection was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor was evaluated by means of an Allan deviation analysis. With an integration time of ~100 s, the MDL was improved to 1 ppm. This sensor was also used to measure the CO2 concentration from some common emission sources, such as cigarette smoking, automobile exhaust, and the combustion of some carbon-containing materials, which confirmed the stability and robustness of the reported FW-QCL based CO2-PAS sensor system.

High-Pressure Measurements of Temperature and CO2 Concentration Using Tunable Diode Lasers at 2 μm

Abstract:A sensor for simultaneous measurements of temperature and carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration at elevated pressure is developed using tunable diode lasers at 2 µm. Based on some selection rules, a CO2 line pair at 5006.140 and 5010.725 cm(-1) is selected for the TDL sensor. In order to ensure the accuracy and rapidity of the sensor, a quasi-fixed-wavelength WMS is employed. Normalization of the 2f signal with the 1f signal magnitude is used to remove the need for calibration and correct for transmission variation due to beam steering, mechanical misalignments, soot, and windows fouling. Temperatures are obtained from comparison of the background-subtracted 1f-normalized WMS-2f signals ratio and a 1f-normalized WMS-2f peak values ratio model. CO2 concentration is inferred from the 1f-normalized WMS-2f peak values of the CO2 transition at 5006.140 cm(-1). Measurements of temperature and CO2 concentration are carried out in static cell experiments (P = 1-10 atm, T = 500-1200 K) to validate the accuracy and ability of the sensor. The results show that accuracy of the sensor for temperature and CO2 concentration are 1.66% temperature and 3.1%, respectively. All the measurements show the potential utility of the sensor for combustion diagnose at elevated pressure.

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based methane (CH4) detection using a high power continuous wave (CW), single mode diode laser with an emission wavelength at 2.3 μm was demonstrated. A diode laser with a high output power of 6.3 mW and a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonant frequency of 30.72 kHz were used to improve the CH4-QEPAS sensor performance. A micro-resonator and water vapor acted as a catalyst for improving the relaxation rate of the target gas molecule were added in the CH4-QEPAS sensor for further enhancing the signal level. A minimum detection limit (MDL) of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor reached 7.9 parts per million (ppm). After utilizing wavelet filtering, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was improved by a factor of 3.6 and a lower MDL of 2.2 ppm was achieved. In order to evaluate the long-term stability of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor an Allan deviation analysis was implemented.

Abstract:A compact and sensitive quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensor for carbon monoxide (CO) detection was demonstrated by using a mid-infrared all-fiber structure as well as a 3D-printed acoustic detection module. An all-fiber configuration has advantages of easier optical alignment, lower insertion loss improvement in system stability, reduction in sensor size and lower cost. The 3D-printed acoustic detection module was introduced to match the mid-infrared all-fiber structure and further decrease the sensor volume, which resulted in a small size of 3.5 cm(3) and a weight of 5 grams. A 2.33 mu m distributed feedback fiber-coupled diode laser was used as the laser excitation source. A custom quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a small-gap of 200 mu m was used as the acoustic wave transducer in order to improve the signal level of the QEPAS sensor. An acoustic micro resonator was utilized as the acoustic wave enhancer. The gas pressure and laser wavelength modulation depth were optimized, respectively. Water vapor was used to accelerate the vibrational-translational relaxation rate of the targeted CO molecule. Finally, a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 4.2 part per million (ppm) was achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 7.4 x 10(-9) cm(-1) W/root Hz. An Allan deviation analysis was used to evaluate the long-term stability of the reported CO-QEPAS sensor system. With an integration time of 150 s, the MDL was improved to be 1.3 ppm. Abstract:In this paper, a highly sensitive and integrated near-infrared CO2 sensor was developed based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). Unlike traditional QEPAS, a novel pilot line manufactured quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a resonance frequency f 0 of 28 kHz was employed as an acoustic wave transducer. A near-infrared DFB laser diode emitting at 2004 nm was employed as the excitation light source for CO2 detection. An integrated near-infrared QEPAS module was designed and manufactured. The QTF, acoustic micro resonator (AmR), gas cell, and laser fiber are integrated, resulting in a super compact acoustic detection module (ADM). Compared to a traditional 32 kHz QTF, the QEPAS signal amplitude increased by > 2 times by the integrated QEPAS module based on a 28 kHz QTF. At atmospheric pressure, a 5.4 ppm detection limit at a CO2 absorption line of 4991.25 cm-1 was achieved with an integration time of 1 s. The long-term performance and stability of the CO2 sensor system were investigated using Allan variance analysis. Finally, the minimum detection limit (MDL) was improved to 0.7 ppm when the integration time was 125 s. A portable CO2 sensor system based on QEPAS was developed for 24 h continuous monitoring of CO2 in the greenhouse located in Guangzhou city. The CO2 concentration variations were clearly observed during day and night. Photosynthesis and respiration plants can be further researched by the portable CO2 sensor system.

Abstract:The novel 2.33 mm distributed feed back laser is used to detect carbon monoxide with off-beam quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). The parameters including modulation frequency, modulation amplitude are optimized. The signal of off-beam QEPAS versus concentration of carbon monoxide is investigated. Good linearity between off-beam QEPAS signal and concentration of carbon monoxide is obtained. A normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 3 × 10 cm·W/ Hz is obtained with a 1 s time constant of lockin amplifier.

Abstract:A real-time measurement of gases based on QEPAS is introduced. For eliminating fluctuation of laser, a simple method, in which a digital PID algorithm and a software lock-in amplifier designed by using Lab-VIEW are employed, is utilized to lock the laser to the center of the absorption line. In order to test the system, an absorption line of water vapor near 1.396 ~m is chosen by using a fiber-coupled distributed feedback （DFB） diode laser. An over-40-hours continuous measurement is implemented, and the relevant results are presented and discussed. The detection limit of the system is 1 ppm. This method can also be used to measure the trace gases and monitor the industry gases.

Abstract:In this report, an ultra-high sensitive quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based ammonia (NH3) sensor using a power amplified diode laser and a low resonance frequency quartz tuning fork (QTF) was demonstrated for the first time. A fiber-coupled, continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback (DFB) diode laser with a watt level output power boosted by an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) was used as the QEPAS excitation source. A QTF with a resonance frequency of 30.72 kHz was employed as an acoustic wave transducer. The modulation depth in the wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) based QEPAS system was optimized theoretically and validated by experimental measurements. For the reported NH3 sensor system, a 418.4 ppbv (parts per billion by volume) minimum detection limit at a NH3 absorption line of 6533.4 cm(-1) was achieved when the modulation depth was set to the optimum value of 0.188 cm(-1). The ppb-level detection sensitivity verified the design of the reported QEPAS method and makes it suitable for use in environmental monitoring and other applications. Abstract:We report the development of a distribution feedback (DFB) laser sensor for high precision and high sensitivity detection of the early fire gas carbon monoxide (CO). This system relied on a continuous wave (CW), distributed feedback laser emitting at a wavelength of around 2.33 pm as excitation source. A 2f/1f wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) strategy was adopted to isolate complex, overlapping spectral absorption features typical of ambient pressures and to achieve excellent specificity and high detection sensitivity. Allan-Werle deviation analysis was used to evaluate the long-term performance of the CO sensor system, and limit of detection (LoD) of 1.18 parts per million by volume (ppmv) was achieved while a measurement precision of 0.08 ppmv was observed with an optimal integration time of similar to 205-s. As a field measurement, early fire detection of paper, cotton and pine wood were conducted, which verified the reliable and robust operation of the developed sensor.

Abstract:A high-sensitivity quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) system based on acousto-optic Q-switched fiber laser for C2H2 detection was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. The gas sensor system coupled an erbium-doped fiber laser with a custom-made transmission quartz tuning fork structure. An acousto-optic modulator was used to perform amplitude modulation at a modulation frequency of 32.76 kHz and the system achieved a maximum intra-cavity peak pulse power of 6 W. The system response relationship between the peak pulse power and QEPAS signals confirms that saturation does not occur with the laser power less than 6 W. Preliminary measurements of the sensor response to C2H2 concentrations have been made with pure N-2 as a carrier gas, and the experimental results showed the relationship between QEPAS signal amplitude and the C2H2 concentrations have a good linearity (R-square = 0.99918). Finally, trace gas measurements have been assessed and a minimum detection limit of 101 pptv within 20 ms integration time for C2H2 has been achieved. Abstract:A ppbv-level quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS)-based ethane (C2H6) sensor was demonstrated by using a 3.3 μm continuous-wave (CW), distributed feedback (DFB) interband cascade laser (ICL). The ICL was employed for targeting a strong C2H6 absorption line located at 2996.88 cm−1 in its fundamental absorption band. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) combined with the second harmonic (2f) detection technique was utilized to increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and simplify data acquisition and processing. Gas pressure and laser frequency modulation depth were optimized to be 100 Torr and 0.106 cm−1, respectively, for maximizing the 2f signal amplitude. Performance of the QEPAS sensor was evaluated using specially prepared C2H6 samples. A detection limit of 11 parts per billion in volume (ppbv) was obtained with a 1-s integration time based on an Allan-Werle variance analysis, and the detection precision can be further improved to ~1.5 ppbv by increasing the integration time up to 230 s.
