Abstract:We report a mid-infrared cavity-enhanced absorption sensor for atmospheric nitrous oxide (N2O) detection using a continuous-wave distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) at 4.5 µm. The QCL beam is coupled to a short (78 mm) Fabry-Perot (F-P) optical cavity, which consists of two plano-concave dielectric mirrors with a reflectivity of 99.84%. The Pound-Drever-Hall technique is used to lock the QCL to the optical cavity by directly modulating the injection current of the QCL at 4 MHz. Our mid-infrared gas sensor achieves a minimum detection limit of 0.32 ppb at 50 s integration time. We demonstrate a proof-of-concept absorption spectral measurement of ambient air. Our study provides a promising way of developing compact and sensitive gas sensors for environmental monitoring.

Abstract:Quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based methane (CH4) detection using a high power continuous wave (CW), single mode diode laser with an emission wavelength at 2.3 μm was demonstrated. A diode laser with a high output power of 6.3 mW and a quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a low resonant frequency of 30.72 kHz were used to improve the CH4-QEPAS sensor performance. A micro-resonator and water vapor acted as a catalyst for improving the relaxation rate of the target gas molecule were added in the CH4-QEPAS sensor for further enhancing the signal level. A minimum detection limit (MDL) of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor reached 7.9 parts per million (ppm). After utilizing wavelet filtering, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) was improved by a factor of 3.6 and a lower MDL of 2.2 ppm was achieved. In order to evaluate the long-term stability of such a CH4-QEPAS sensor an Allan deviation analysis was implemented.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based carbon dioxide (CO2) sensor with a fixed wavelength quantum cascade laser (FW-QCL) was demonstrated. The emission wavelength of the FW-QCL at 4.42 μm in the mid-infrared spectral region matched a fundamental CO2 absorption line. Amplitude modulation of the laser intensity was used to match the resonant photoacoustic (PA) cell. The noise from the background was reduced with the correlation demodulation technique. The experimental results showed that the sensor had excellent signal stability and a concentration linear response. When the integration time was 1 s, a 1σ minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.84 parts per million (ppm) for CO2 detection was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor was evaluated by means of an Allan deviation analysis. With an integration time of ~100 s, the MDL was improved to 1 ppm. This sensor was also used to measure the CO2 concentration from some common emission sources, such as cigarette smoking, automobile exhaust, and the combustion of some carbon-containing materials, which confirmed the stability and robustness of the reported FW-QCL based CO2-PAS sensor system.

Abstract:We present a gas sensing system based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) employing a monolithic distributed-feedback quantum cascade laser (QCL) array operated in a pulsed mode as a light source. The array consists of 32 quantum cascade lasers emitting in a spectral range from 1190 cm−1 to 1340 cm−1. The optoacoustic detection module was composed of a custom quartz tuning fork with a prong spacing of 1 mm, coupled with two micro-resonator tubes to enhance the signal-to-noise ratio. The QEPAS sensor was validated by detecting the absorption of the P- and R-branches of nitrous oxide. The measurements were performed by switching the array QCLs in sequence while tuning their operating temperature to retrieve the fine structure of the two N2O branches. A sensor calibration was performed, demonstrating a linear responsivity for N2O:N2 concentrations from 1000 down to 200 parts-per-million. With a 10 s lock-in integration time, a detection sensitivity of less than 60 parts-per-billion was achieved permitting the monitoring of nitrous oxide at global atmospheric levels.

Abstract:This paper introduces a compact and portable sensor based on mid-infrared absorption spectroscopy for NO detection employing a room-temperature continuous wave (CW) distributed feedback quantum cascade laser (DFB-QCL) emitting at 1900.08cm-1. A software-based digital signal generator and lock-in amplifier, in combination with the wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) technique, were used for the concentration measurement of NO. In addition, a Gabor filter denoising method was developed to improve the performance of the measurement system. As a result, a minimum detection limit of 42 ppbv can be achieved at 3 s integration time, and a measurement precision of 450 ppbv can be reached with a time resolution of 0.1 s. The performance of the compact portable sensor was verified by a series of experiments, denoting great potential of field application for sensitive NO sensing.

Abstract:In this paper, a highly sensitive and integrated near-infrared CO2 sensor was developed based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS). Unlike traditional QEPAS, a novel pilot line manufactured quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a resonance frequency f 0 of 28 kHz was employed as an acoustic wave transducer. A near-infrared DFB laser diode emitting at 2004 nm was employed as the excitation light source for CO2 detection. An integrated near-infrared QEPAS module was designed and manufactured. The QTF, acoustic micro resonator (AmR), gas cell, and laser fiber are integrated, resulting in a super compact acoustic detection module (ADM). Compared to a traditional 32 kHz QTF, the QEPAS signal amplitude increased by > 2 times by the integrated QEPAS module based on a 28 kHz QTF. At atmospheric pressure, a 5.4 ppm detection limit at a CO2 absorption line of 4991.25 cm-1 was achieved with an integration time of 1 s. The long-term performance and stability of the CO2 sensor system were investigated using Allan variance analysis. Finally, the minimum detection limit (MDL) was improved to 0.7 ppm when the integration time was 125 s. A portable CO2 sensor system based on QEPAS was developed for 24 h continuous monitoring of CO2 in the greenhouse located in Guangzhou city. The CO2 concentration variations were clearly observed during day and night. Photosynthesis and respiration plants can be further researched by the portable CO2 sensor system.

Abstract:In this paper, a mid-infrared quasi-distributed carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensing based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and hollow waveguide (HWG) was proposed for the first time. Three micropores with a diameter of 200 μm were developed at three different locations of a HWG with a length of 30 cm. Three customized low-frequency quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with a resonant frequency of 8.7 kHz were used to detect the photoacoustic signals generated at the micropores to achieve quasi-distributed measurements of CO, which provides a new idea for monitoring the leakage of gas pipelines and so on. In order to improve the performance of the gas detection system, the strongest absorption line with CO located at 2179.77 cm−1 (4.58 µm) was selected as the target absorption line, and a quantum cascade laser (QCL) was used as the excitation source to achieve the detection of CO in the mid infrared spectral region. The experimental results show that all three QTFs have excellent concentration linear response to CO, and the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the three QTFs to CO were 2.40 ppm, 2.59 ppm, and 2.34 ppm, respectively. Finally, the experiment tested the response ability of three QTFs to different concentrations of CO at the same time. The results showed that for micropores with different concentrations, all three QTFs can detect their corresponding concentrations, which proves that the sensor can achieve quasi-distributed measurement.

Abstract:A photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS)-based carbon monoxide (CO) gas sensor with a high-power laser and an enhanced gas absorption was demonstrated. The light source was a distributed feedback (DFB), continuous wave (CW) diode laser with a high output power of ~8 mW to give a strong excitation. The target gas received optical absorption enhanced two times by using a right-angle prism reflecting the laser beam. In order to reduce the noise from the background, wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) and second-harmonic detection techniques were used. The modulation frequency and modulation depth were optimized theoretically and experimentally. Water vapor was added in the PAS sensor system to increase the vibrational–translational (V–T) relaxation rate of the CO molecule, which resulted in an ~8 times signal enhancement compared with the using of a dry CO/N2 gas mixture. The amplitude of the 2f signal had a 1.52-fold improvement compared to the one with only one time absorption. The experimental results showed that such a sensor had an excellent linear response to the optical power and gas concentration. At 1 s integration time, a minimum detection limit (MDL) for CO detection of 9.8 ppm was achieved. The long-term stability of the sensor system was evaluated with an Allan deviation analysis. When the integration time was 1100 s, the MDL improved to be 530 ppb. The detection performance of such a PAS-based CO sensor can be further improved when a laser with a higher output power and increasing optical absorption times is used.

Abstract:A trace gas sensor, based on quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS), consisting of two acoustically coupled micro-resonators (mR) with an off-axis 20 kHz quartz tuning fork (QTF) is demonstrated. The complete acoustically coupled mR system is optimized based on finite element simulations and experimentally verified. The QEPAS sensor is pumped resonantly by a nanosecond pulsed single-mode mid-infrared optical parametric oscillator (MIR OPO). The sensor is used for spectroscopic measurements on methane in the 3.1 um to 3.5 um wavelength region with a resolution bandwidth of 1 cm^-1 and a detection limit of 0.8 ppm. An Allan deviation analysis shows that the detection limit at optimum integration time for the QEPAS sensor is 32 ppbv@190s and that the background noise is solely due to the thermal noise of the QTF.

Abstract:Methane (CH 4 ) is a greenhouse gas as well as being flammable and explosive. In this manuscript, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) and heterodyne QEPAS (H-QEPAS) exploring a self-designed quartz tuning fork (QTF) with resonance frequency ( f 0 ) of ~8.7 kHz was utilized to achieve sensitive CH 4 detection. Compared with the standard commercial 32.768 kHz QTF, this self-designed QTF with a low f 0 and large prong gap has the merits of large energy accumulation time and low optical noise. The strongest line located at 6057.08 cm −1 in the 2 v 3 overtone band of CH 4 was chosen as the target absorption line. A diode laser with a high output power of > 30 mW was utilized as the excitation source. Acoustic micro-resonators (AmRs) were added to the sensor architecture to amplify the intensity of acoustic waves. Compared to the bare QTF, after the addition of AmRs, a signal enhancement of 149-fold and 165-fold were obtained for QEPAS and H-QEPAS systems, respectively. The corresponding minimum detection limits (MDLs) were 711 ppb and 1.06 ppm for QEPAS and H-QEPAS sensors. Furthermore, based on Allan variance analysis the MDLs can be improved to 19 ppb and 27 ppb correspondingly. Compared to the QEPAS sensor, the H-QEPAS sensor shows significantly shorter measurement timeframes, allowing for measuring the gas concentration quickly while simultaneously obtaining f 0 of QTF.

Abstract:To achieve multi-gas measurements of quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensors under a frequency-division multiplexing mode with a narrow modulation frequency interval, we report a frequency-domain detection method. A CH4 absorption line at 1653.72 nm and a CO2 absorption line at 2004.02 nm were investigated in this experiment. A modulation frequency interval of as narrow as 0.6 Hz for CH4 and CO2 detection was achieved. Frequency-domain 2f signals were obtained with a resolution of 0.125 Hz using a real-time frequency analyzer. With the multiple linear regressions of the frequency-domain 2f signals of various gas mixtures, small deviations within 2.5% and good linear relationships for gas detection were observed under the frequency-division multiplexing mode. Detection limits of 0.6 ppm for CH4 and 2.9 ppm for CO2 were simultaneously obtained. With the 0.6-Hz interval, the amplitudes of QEPAS signals will increase substantially since the modulation frequencies are closer to the resonant frequency of a QTF. Furthermore, the frequency-domain detection method with a narrow interval can realize precise gas measurements of more species with more lasers operating under the frequency-division multiplexing mode. Additionally, this method, with a narrow interval of modulation frequencies, can also realize frequency-division multiplexing detection for QEPAS sensors under low pressure despite the ultra-narrow bandwidth of the QTF.

Abstract:We demonstrate continuous measurement of carbon dioxide (CO2) in the atmosphere using quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) at 2.008 μm with a fiber-coupled distributed-feedback laser. The QEPAS sensor is composed of a quartz tuning fork with a resonance frequency f0 of 12.4 kHz. The photoacoustic second-harmonic (2f) signal resulting from CO2 absorption was detected using a digital lock-in amplifier. The photoacoustic signal is proportional to the laser power. The limit of detection at an absorption line of 4980.13161 cm−1 with a line strength of 3.87 × 10−22 cm2 molecule−1 cm−1 was 12 parts per million with an integration time of 10 s. The results of the continuous monitoring of ambient CO2 using the QEPAS sensor corresponded to those obtained using a nondispersive IR sensor. The QEPAS sensor exhibited a suitable performance for field measurements of the CO2 mixing ratio.

Abstract:An all-optical double-pass quartz enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensor for the detection of acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) at part-per-billion (ppb) levels was developed and experimentally validated. By employing an erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) capable of emitting up to 1 W of optical power, a commercial quartz tuning fork (QTF) resonating at 30.7 kHz, and double-pass acoustic microresonators, the amplitude of the QEPAS signal was significantly enhanced, thereby improving the sensitivity of the C 2 H 2 -QEPAS sensor. Instead of using piezoelectric detection in conventional QEPAS, a highly sensitive fiber-optic Fabry–Perot interferometer (FPI) was employed to measure the vibration of the QTF prong. A working point self-stabilizing technique was exploited to improve the demodulation sensitivity and stability. The linear response of the sensor to laser power and C 2 H 2 concentration confirmed that no saturation occurred. With an excitation laser power of 1 W and a C 2 H 2 absorption line of 1532.83 nm, a C 2 H 2 minimum detection limit (MDL) of 19.1 ppb was achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient (NNEA) of 1.58 × 10 −8 cm −1 ∙W∙Hz −1/2 . Owing to its high sensitivity, long-term stability, and immunity to electromagnetic interferences, the QEPAS sensor provides considerable potential for remote gas sensing in environmental monitoring and other applications.

Abstract:photothermal spectroscopy (QEPTS) technique is suitable for simultaneous measurement of multi-gas in near-infrared (NIR) and mid-infrared (MIR) bands with advantages of wide spectral response and high sensitivity. Here, we report a multi-gas sensing system based on QEPTS using NIR and MIR Lasers. A quartz tuning fork (QTF) with a resonant frequency f0 of 32.742 kHz was employed as a photothermal detector. A continuous wave distributed feedback (CW-DFB) fibercoupled diode laser with a center wavelength of 1.58 & mu;m and an interband cascade laser (ICL) with a center wavelength of 4.47 & mu;m were used as the light sources to simultaneously irradiate on different surfaces of QTF for scanning the absorption lines of carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrous oxide (N2O). A multi-pass cell with an effective optical path of 40 m and a 40 cm absorption cell were selected for the measurements of CO2 and NO2, respectively. The developed sensor was validated by the detection of mixtures containing 3000 ppm CO2 and 20 ppm N2O. The relationships between the second harmonic (2f) amplitude of the QEPTS signal and the CO2 and N2O concentrations were investigated. Allan deviation analysis showed that this sensor had excellent stability and high sensitivity with a minimum detection limit (MDL) of 2.729 ppm for CO2 in an integration time of 195 s and 0.038 ppb for N2O in an integration time of 90 s, respectively.

Abstract:Off-axis integrated cavity output spectroscopy (OA-ICOS) has attracted much interest because it potentially allows highly sensitive field measurements with robust optical alignment. In this paper, a novel instrument that employs a high-finesse optical cavity as an absorption cell has been developed for sensitive measurements of multi-component gases N2O, H2O and CO in the atmosphere based on a mid-infrared quantum cascade laser (QCL) and OA-ICOS. In order to improve the energy utilization and increase the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of the signal, a new type of optical path structure of the laser re-injection method is adopted. Furthermore, the system performance can be effectively improved by using a new intervention method of injecting radio frequency (RF) white noise into a laser driver to suppress cavity mode noise and combining the wavelength modulation method (WMS). We compared the sensitivity of the second harmonic signal demodulation between the re-injection method and the standard OA-ICOS, and the SNR increased by 2.68 times compared to the latter. Analysis of the spectral measurements with Allan variance indicates that within an integration time of 1 s, the measurement accuracy of N2O, H2O, and CO is 6.71 ppb, 13.945 ppm, and 1.81 ppb, respectively, and within an integration time of 820 s, the measurement accuracy of N2O, H2O, and CO can be further improved to 1.26 ppb, 2.089 ppm, and 172 ppt, respectively. Our approach represents an underlying analytical method that provides guidelines for monitoring of representative gases in the atmosphere, industrial processes, emergency safety, etc.
Quartz-Enhanced Photoacoustic Sensor Based on a Multi-Laser Source for In-Sequence Detection of NO2, SO2, and NH3

Abstract:In this work, we report on the implementation of a multi-quantum cascade laser (QCL) module as an innovative light source for quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) sensing. The source is composed of three different QCLs coupled with a dichroitic beam combiner module that provides an overlapping collimated beam output for all three QCLs. The 3λ-QCL QEPAS sensor was tested for detection of NO2, SO2, and NH3 in sequence in a laboratory environment. Sensitivities of 19.99 mV/ppm, 19.39 mV/ppm, and 73.99 mV/ppm were reached for NO2, SO2, and NH3 gas detection, respectively, with ultimate detection limits of 9 ppb, 9.3 ppb, and 2.4 ppb for these three gases, respectively, at an integration time of 100 ms. The detection limits were well below the values of typical natural abundance of NO2, SO2, and NH3 in air.

Abstract:Laser spectroscopy based techniques have the advantages of high sensitivities, high selectivities, non-invasiveness and in situ, real-time observations. They are widely used in numerous fields, such as environmental monitoring, life science, medical diagnostics, manned space flight, and planetary exploration. Owing to the merits of low cost, compact volume and strong environment adaptability, quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (QEPAS) based sensing is an important laser spectroscopy-based method of detecting the trace gas, which was invented in 2002. Detection sensitivity is a key parameter for gas sensors because it determines their real applications. In this paper, focusing on the detection sensitivity, the common methods for QEPAS are summarized. High power laser including amplified diode laser by erbium doped fiber amplifier (EDFA), and quantum cascade laser are used to improve the excitation intensity of acoustic wave. The absorption line of gas molecules located at the fundamental bands of mid-infrared region is adopted to increase the laser absorption strength. Micro-resonator is employed to enhance the generated acoustic pressure by forming a standing wave cavity. Quartz tuning forks (QTFs) with low resonant frequency are used to increase the accumulation time of acoustic energy in itself. Multi-pass strategy is utilized to amplify the action length between laser beam and target gas in the prongs of QTF. The advantages and disadvantages of the above methods are discussed respectively. For the issues in real applications, the all-fiber strucure in near-infared region and mid-infrared region and miniaturization using three-dimensional(3D) printing technique for QEPAS sensor are summarized. A QEPAS technique based multi-gas sensor is used to quantify the concentration of carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO 2 ), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and hydrogen chloride (HCl) for post-fire cleanup aboard spacecraft, which is taken for example for the real application.Finally, the methods of further improving the sensitivity of QEPAS sensor are proposed.

Abstract:A near-infrared (NIR) dual-gas sensor has been developed for simultaneous detection of atmospheric trace methane (CH4) and carbon dioxide (CO2). To realize high sensitivity and high precision, wavelength modulation spectroscopy with 2f/1f (WMS-2f/1f) detection method was adopted for eliminating laser light intensity fluctuation, and laser wavelength locking strategy based on a self-developed proportion integration differentiation (PID) algorithm was used for suppressing laser wavelength shifting effect. Two fiber-coupled DFB diode lasers with central wavelengths near 1653.7 nm and 1579.6 nm are applied for simultaneously measuring CH4 and CO2 spectra, respectively, and frequency division multiplexing (FDM) technique is employed to resolve the potential crosstalk effect. Real-time measurement of ambient atmospheric trace CH4 and CO2 was performed to demonstrate the long-term stability of the sensor system. Allan deviation analysis indicates that detection sensitivity of 0.1 ppm for CH4 and 2.27 ppm for CO2 was achieved with a 1 s average time, which can be further improved to 18 ppb and 0.3 ppm with the optimal integration time of 462 s and 392 s, respectively.
