Abstract:Based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technique, the measurement method of CO2 temperature and concentration in high temperature environment is studied. The CO2 absorption line near 1996 cm(-1) is selected as the target detection line to measure CO2 temperature and concentration in high temperature environment. The CO2 concentration and temperature of CO2/N-2 mixed gas in the gas absorption cell at different temperatures (873-1273 K) and different CO2 volume fraction (4%-10%) arc measured. The results show that, compared with the setting values, the average deviation and peak deviation of the measured temperature arc 2.07% and 3.49 %, respectively. The average deviation and peak deviation of the measured concentration arc 2.25 % and 4.75 %, respectively. The results indicate that the proposed method is accurate, and it provides references for CO2 detection in the high temperature environment.

Abstract:The technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been developed to realize the real-time and dynamic measurement of the combustion-generated pollutants. In this paper the fundamental of concentration and temperature measurement with TDLAS is presented. To validate the method, an experimental system of TDLAS is set up. A simple VCSEL diode without temperature controller is used for direct absorption and WMS setup. Restricted by modulation voltage and noise from diode laser and detector, concentration of 0.2% for I in path length can be detected. Temperature measurement in tube furnace is also carried out by CO2 absorption lines near 1.58um, and below 800K the difference between calculation by TDLAS and temperature signal by K-thermocouple is less than 60K. The method to eliminate the effects of the particles is also discussed here. By using three-order polynomial program, the measurement can be not affected by particles and power fluctuation.

Abstract:Simultaneous detection of two analytes, carbon dioxide (CO 2 )and water vapor (H 2 O), has been realized using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with a single distributed feedback diode laser at 2.7 μm. The dynamic range of the spectrometer is extended from the low parts per million to the percentage range using two gas cells, a single-pass cell with 0.77 m, and a Herriott-type multipass cell with 76 m path length. Absolute measurements were carried out, i.e., amount fractions of the analytes were calculated based on previously determined spectral line parameters, without the need for an instrument calibration using gas standards. A thorough metrological characterization of the spectrometer is presented. We discuss traceability of all parameters used for amount fraction determination and provide a comprehensive uncertainty assessment. Relative expanded uncertainties ( k = 2, 95% confidence level) of the measured amount fractions are shown to be in the 2-3% range for both analytes. Minimum detectable amount fractions are 0.16 μmol/mol for CO 2 and 1.1 μmol/mol for H 2 0 for 76 m path length and 5 s averaging time. This corresponds to normalized detection limits of 27 μmol/mol m Hz _1/2 for CO 2 and 221 μmol/mol m Hz −1/2 for H 2 O. Precision of the spectrometer, determined using Allan variance analysis, is 3.3 nmol/mol for CO 2 and 21 nmol/mol for H 2 O. The spectrometer has been validated using reference gas mixtures with known CO 2 and H 2 O amount fractions. An application example of the absolute TDLAS spectrometer as a reference instrument to validate other sensors is also presented.

Temperature Measurement of Carbon Dioxide Using Fixed-Wavelength Absorption Spectroscopy Technique

Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (hDLAS) technique is a non-intrusive measurement method for measuring gas concentration and temperature, and it requires scanning over the entire spectrum. To relieve the overlapping spectral interference and increase the measurement rate, a fixed-wavelength absorption spectroscopy technique is used. To study the effect of fixed-wavelength absorption spectroscopy for temperature measurement, a distributed feedback laser with a center wavelength around 2.0 mu m is used to measure the temperature of CO2. Since the absorption spectrum peak is affected by the lineshape function, the peak value of the lineshape function is simulated by querying the database, and then the relationship between the absorption peak ratio and temperature under the test condition is simulated. Finally, a tube furnace is used in the validation experiment. The experimental results show that the measured temperature is highly consistent with the set temperature. In the range of 673-1273 K, the average temperature measurement error is 1. 22%, which proves the feasibility and accuracy of the fixed-wavelength absorption spectroscopy technique.

Abstract:Tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy of CO was studied in the controlled laboratory environments of a heated cell and a combustion exhaust rig. Two absorption lines, R(10) and R(11) in the first overtone band of CO near 2.3 mu m, were selected from a HITRAN simulation to minimize interference from water vapor at a representative combustion exhaust temperature (similar to 1200 K). The linestrengths and collision broadening coefficients for these lines were measured in a heated static cell. This database was then used in a comparative study of direct absorption and wavelength-modulation absorption. CO concentration measurements using scanned-wavelength direct absorption (DA) and wavelength modulation with the second-harmonic signal normalized by the first-harmonic signal (WMS-2f/1f) all agreed with those measured by a conventional gas sampling analyzer over the range from < 10 ppm to 2.3%. As expected, water vapor was found to be the dominant source of background interference for CO detection in combustion flows at high temperatures. Water absorption was measured to a high spectral resolution within the wavelength region 4295-4301 cm(-1) at 1100 K, and shown to produce < 10 ppm level interference for CO detection in combustion exhausts at temperatures up to 1200 K. We found that the WMS-2f/1f strategy avoids the need for WMS calibration measurements but requires characterization of the wavelength and injection-current intensity modulation of the specific diode laser. We conclude that WMS-2f/1f using the selected R(10) or R(11) transitions in the CO overtone band holds good promise for sensitive in situ detection of ppm-level CO in combustion flows, with high resistance to interference absorption from H2O.

Abstract:A near-infrared diode laser sensor is presented that is capable of measuring time-varying gas temperature and water vapour concentration at temperatures up to 1050 K and pressures up to 25 atm with a bandwidth of 7.5 kHz. Measurements with noise-equivalent-absorbances of the order of 10−3 (10−5 Hz−1/2) are made possible in dynamic environments through the use of wavelength modulation spectroscopy (WMS) with second harmonic detection (2f) on two water vapour spectral features near 7203.9 and 7435.6 cm−1. Laser performance characteristics that become important at the large modulation depths needed at high pressures are accounted for in the WMS-2f signal analysis, and the utility of normalization by the 1f signal to correct for variations in laser intensity, transmission and detector gain is presented. Laboratory measurements with the sensor system in a static cell with known temperature and pressure agree to 3% RMS in temperature and 4% RMS in H2O mole fraction for 500 < T < 900 K and 1 < P < 25 atm. The sensor time response is demonstrated in a high-pressure shock tube where shock wave transients are successfully captured, the average measured post-shock temperature agrees within 1% of the expected value, and H2O mole fraction agrees within 8%.

Portable TDLAS Sensor for Online Monitoring of CO2 and H2O Using a Miniaturized Multi-Pass Cell

Abstract:We designed a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) sensor for the online monitoring of CO2 and H2O concentrations. It comprised a small self-design multi-pass cell, home-made laser drive circuits, and a data acquisition circuit. The optical and electrical parts and the gas circuit were integrated into a portable carrying case (height = 134 mm, length = 388 mm, and width = 290 mm). A TDLAS drive module (size: 90 mm × 45 mm) was designed to realize the function of laser current and temperature control with a temperature control accuracy of ±1.4 mK and a current control accuracy of ±0.5 μA, and signal acquisition and demodulation. The weight and power consumption of the TDLAS system were only 5 kg and 10 W, respectively. Distributed feedback lasers (2004 nm and 1392 nm) were employed to target CO2 and H2O absorption lines, respectively. According to Allan analysis, the detection limits of CO2 and H2O were 0.13 ppm and 3.7 ppm at an average time of 18 s and 35 s, respectively. The system response time was approximately 10 s. Sensor performance was verified by measuring atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentrations for 240 h. Experimental results were compared with those obtained using a commercial instrument LI-7500, which uses non-dispersive infrared technology. Measurements of the developed gas analyzer were in good agreement with those of the commercial instrument, and its accuracy was comparable. Therefore, the TDLAS sensor has strong application prospects in atmospheric CO2 and H2O concentration detection and ecological soil flux monitoring.

Abstract:The greenhouse effect resulting from fuel combustion has drawn growing attention, and CO2 emissions from fossil fuel power stations are one of the main sources of greenhouse gases. It is crucial to monitor the concentration of CO2 in the flue gas ducts of these stations. However, pressure and vibration caused by the combustion of boilers make the measurement of CO2 in flue gas ducts extremely challenging. In this study, tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) combined with Wave Modulation Spectroscopy (WMS) was employed to measure the concentration of CO2 under different pressure and vibration conditions in the laboratory. The absorption line of CO2 at the wavenumber 6357.38 cm−1 was recorded under varying pressure conditions ranging from 0 to 1.4 atm, acceleration conditions ranging from 0 to 7.7 m/s2, and a combination of both. Firstly, a negative linear correlation was found between the pressure and the amplitude of the second harmonic, with a maximum relative error of 4.645% observed at a pressure of 1.4 atm. Secondly, the maximum acceleration that the system can withstand was determined to be 7.3 m/s2, as it was not possible to provide a sufficiently low fitting error at higher accelerations. For the combined effects of the pressure and vibration, a dramatic increase in the relative error of amplitude can be observed within the acceleration range of 5.0~6.0 m/s2 while under the pressure conditions of 0.6 atm, 1.0 atm, and 1.4 atm. Moreover, the maximum endurable acceleration decreases with the increase in pressure, which infers that effective measurements can be achieved when the acceleration is below 5 m/s2 within the pressure range of 0~1.4 atm. This suggests that TDLAS combined with WMS possesses a potential for online measuring of CO2 concentrations in flue gas ducts within a certain acceleration range. This work can provide some insights for stable gas detection using TDLAS under varied pressure and vibration conditions.

Abstract:A measurement device based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy was developed to measure CO concentration at elevated temperature condition. Based on wavelength modulation, R14 transition, around 6395.4 cm(-1), was selected as the absorption line to enhance the signal to noise ratio and detection limit, and avoid the interferences of other combustion gases. By building up a water absorption background database at different temperatures, the interference by water transition around CO absorption line can be eliminated, and the water concentration and temperature information can be obtained simultaneously. After measuring the temperature, CO concentration was detected by combining with the CO standard absorption database. The experimental results showed the CO detection range and limit of detection for the device was 0.1%-10% and 0.03% respectively with an error below 5%, and the measured temperature was as high as 1000 degrees C with an error below 10%. This device could provide CO concentration and temperature information in real-time for steel plant and power plant to increase combustion efficiency and decrease exhaust emission.

Abstract:Based on the tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopic line(TDLASL) Techonology and the wavelength modulation spectroscopic(WMS) technology,and selecting the absorption spectroscopic line at 2302.12 μm,the measurement of CO concentration under 1000 K high temperature environment has been carried out,the result shows that the maximum error in direct measurement method is less than 5%,the maximum error in WMS method is less than 3%,the minimum detectable limit in unit optical length can reach 20×10-6.Through analysis of the two said methods,it is believed that the WMS method can effectively suppress the low frequency noise,enhancing the sensitivity of said system,making the measured value to be more close to the actual value.

Abstract:The wavelength of diode laser is continuously scanned in a small wavelength range when performing tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy technique for the neasurement of some specific gaseous species,thus may limit the selection of target transitions because absorption transitions of different gas species usually overlap which may cause interference during measurement.The wavelength scanning process also takes a lot of time.In order to overcome the interference from other species,expand the choice of available transitions,and realize the fast-response measurement,a fixed-wavelength direct absorption spectroscopy technique is proposed in this paper.During the measurement,the laser wavelength was fixed on the wavelength center of absorption transition.This new proposed technique was used to measure the temperature and coucentration of CO gas with set values and the accuracy was validated.This fixed-wavelength direct absorption spectroscopy technique exhibits good potential in diagnostics and study of chemical kinetics.

Abstract:Temperature measurement is realized by scanning two absorption lines of CO2 using VCSEL(vertical cavity surface emitting laser)diode laser at 1.58 μm.The fundamental of temperature measurement by tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy(TDLAS) combined with wavelength modulation technique is introduced here,and correlative factors are discussed.The experiment is carried out in a heated quartz tube at normal pressure.Within the temperature range of 20 to 300 ℃,the difference between TDLAS and K-thermocouple is less than 35 ℃.The result analysis can be useful for the further research on simultaneous concentration and temperature measurement by a single diode laser.

Abstract:Temperature variations of flue gas have an effect on carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions monitoring. This paper demonstrates accurate CO2 concentration measurement using tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with temperature compensation methods. A distributed feedback diode laser at 1579 nm was chosen as the laser source for CO2 measurements. A modeled flue gas was made referring to CO2 concentrations of 10–20% and temperatures of 298–338 K in the exhaust of a power plant. Two temperature compensation methods based on direct absorption (DA) and wavelength modulation (WMS) are presented to improve the accuracy of the concentration measurement. The relative standard deviations of DA and WMS measurements of concentration were reduced from 0.84% and 0.35% to 0.42% and 0.31%, respectively. Our experimental results have validated the rationality of temperature compensations and can be further applied for high-precision measurement of gas concentrations in industrial emission monitoring.

Abstract:CO concentration real-time monitoring in combustion process has great significance in improving combustion efficiency and controlling combustion emissions. No CO-spectroscopy solid state sensors are available at the high temperature of 1600K-2000K in the flames. Gas sensing based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) with the advantages of high sensitivity, high selectivity, quick response and non-intrusiveness offers the possibility for on-line measurement in combustion environment. CO absorption line located at 2302.12nm is selected for measurement by direct absorption method in premixed C3H8/Air flat flame. Experiment results show that, when equivalence ratio is larger than one, the concentration of CO in the flame is increased with the increase of equivalence ratio. It proves that this method can be used on combustion environment.

Abstract:Here is described an instrument for ammonia determination utilizing near-infrared laser absorption suitable for high-temperature applications. The laser wavelength is scanned across the ammonia absorption line at 1.512 & mu;m and wavelength-modulation spectroscopy is simultaneously performed to provide robust and accurate measurements. The thermal effects and beam-steering effects are highlighted in the design. An aluminum baffle is employed to alleviate the adverse impact of elevated temperature on the electronic components and evaluated by an infrared thermographic camera. The beam-steering effects were quantitatively assessed through a combination of two-dimensional computational fluid dynamics and ray tracing analysis. Reference standards from 1 to 20 ppm ammonia were used to verify the system performance. The determined ammonia concentrations exhibit good consistency with the reference values, as demonstrated by a coefficient of determination (R-2) of 0.999. Furthermore, a detection limit of 0.02 ppm was achieved using an integration time of 60 s. Pprecision of 0.11 ppm was achieved using 1 s time resolution.

Abstract:Spectral parameters of CO absorption line were measured under different combustion conditions using a 2.3 μm diode laser by scanned-wavelength direct absorption(DA) strategy based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy(TDLAS),so as to study the influence of pressure and temperature on the width and intensity of absorption line.Results show that the line width increases gradually with the rise of pressure,which requires the laser to have a wide scanning range;spectral line R(30) is highly independent at high pressures,without superimposition with other interference lines,therefore is suitable for measurement of CO absorption line;the influence of particles on measurement precision can be reduced by background elimination method;the intensity of lines in selected band is strong enough at high temperatures(1 000 K),so that direct absorption signals can be obtained,and the complexity of modulation technique can be avoided,which therefore may serve as a reference for study of relevant influencing factors.

Abstract:The technique based on tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy (TDLAS) has been developed to realize the real-time and dynamic measurement of the combustion-generated pollutants. In this paper the fundamental of the measurement using TDLAS is presented. By setting up the mathematic model of CO2 absorption line at 6359.97 cm-1 and making use of the parameters from the high-resolution transmission molecular absorption database, the effects of scanning step length, temperature, pressure and absorbance random error on the gas concentration measurement are discussed. The minimum detectivity as a function of temperature and pressure is also analyzed. The result can be useful for the practical application and further study.

Abstract:Abstract Carbon monoxide (CO) and carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) are products of incomplete combustion and complete combustion, respectively. Time‐resolved knowledge of CO and CO 2 exhaust concentrations will aid in improving combustion strategies, control, and efficiency. To achieve online high‐precision simultaneous measurement of CO and CO 2 , a tunable diode laser absorption spectroscopy‐based sensor is designed and constructed. Two diode lasers with central wavelengths of 2.3 and 2.0 μm are multiplexed in time‐division to cover the absorption spectral lines of CO at 4285.00 cm −1 and CO 2 at 4989.96 cm −1 , respectively. Wavelength modulation spectroscopy with second harmonic detection normalized by the first harmonic (WMS‐2 f /1 f ) is employed. A software lock‐in amplifier and inversion algorithm are implemented for data processing and concentration acquisition. The entire measurement system is based on the idea of a virtual instrument and is carried out using a high‐speed data acquisition card and a computer. Experimental verification demonstrates that the measurement accuracies of CO and CO 2 were 2.47% and 2.56%, respectively, with a time resolution of 20 ms. Dynamic measurement experiments with an alcohol blast burner validate the feasibility of measuring CO and CO 2 in actual combustion environments. The developed sensor demonstrates the potential for real‐time and in situ carbon emission measurement for combustion diagnosis.
