Abstract:We demonstrate Mach-Zehnder interferometers (MZI) assembled using optical microfibers or nanofibers (MNFs) drawn from silica fibers and tellurite glasses. As-assembled MZIs, with dimensions of tens to hundreds of micrometers, show good interference fringes with extinction ratios of approximately 10 dB. The path-length difference of the MZI can be tuned by micromanipulation under an optical microscope. The MNF-assembled MZIs demonstrated here show advantages of easy fabrication, in situ tunability, and compact size.

Abstract:A novel fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is demonstrated for temperature and refractive index measurements. The sensor is formed by splicing a section of etched thin core fiber (TCF) between two single mode fibers (SMFs). Experimental results show that, high temperature sensitivity of 198.5pm/°C with a temperature variation of 40°C is achieved. The Refractive index (RI) response of the sensor is also investigated; the RI sensitivity is up to -66.305 nm/RIU within the RI range of 1.3286 - 1.3668.

Abstract:A Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on single-mode-multimode-thin-core-single-mode fiber structure is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for measuring refractive index and temperature simultaneously. The transmission dips of the sensor will shift when the ambient refractive index and temperature change, so it is possible to measure the refractive index and temperature by monitoring the wavelength shifts of the two transmission dips due to different interference orders. The experimental results show that the sensing sensitivities of refractive index and temperature are -18.1764 nm/RIU and 0.0733 nm/RIU within the refractive index range from 1.3105 to 1.3517 and the temperature range from 25 degrees C to 50 degrees C, respectively. Its cost effectiveness, robustness and easy fabrication will have attractive potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:We propose and demonstrate a fiber in-line Mach–Zehnder interferometer using thin-core fibers. This in-line interferometer is composed of a short section of thin-core fiber inserted between two single mode fibers (SMF), and demonstrated as a strain and temperature sensor in this study. A strain sensitivity of −1.83pm/με with a measurement range of 0−2000με, and the temperature sensitivity of −72.89pm/°C with a temperature variation of 50°C are achieved. We also discussed that the influence of strain and temperature change on the relative power ratios among the excited cladding modes in thin-core fibers.

Abstract:A miniature fiber-optic gap-coupled cladding waveguide Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) is proposed and demonstrated for high-sensitive refractive index measurement. Two straight cladding waveguides respectively coupled with the fiber core are inscribed by a femtosecond laser (fs) to form the MZI structure. At their far ends, the two cladding waveguides are very close to the cladding surface, and a short separation was intentionally designed for the coupling of light between them and generating light field with evanescent wave expanded outside the cladding surface, which makes the MZI structure very sensitive to ambient refractive variations. In a refractive index range of 1.34–1.42, a high sensitivity of −59.90238 nm/RIU is achieved simultaneously with good linearity. The sensing structure also shows good characteristic of temperature insensitivity, which may find practical applications in chemical or biological sensing.

Abstract:We demonstrate a temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor based on a silicon-on-insulator platform. The sensor consists of a ring resonator and a Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MM). A free spectral range of the sensing ring is designed to be slightly different from that of the MZI; hence, the Vernier effect can be employed to improve sensitivity. By optimizing structural parameters of the MZI, the envelope peak position of a cascaded transmission spectrum can be immune to the temperature variation, and only dependent on analyte change in the sensing area. The experimental results show that bulk refractive index (RI) sensitivity of the proposed sensor is 3552 nm/RI unit, while its temperature sensitivity is less than 4 pm/K, which is two orders of magnitude smaller than the conventional cascaded sensor structure without temperature compensation. The proposed temperature-insensitive waveguide sensor does not need polymer cladding or extra thermal stabilization, making it more robust in practical applications. Abstract:In this article, an in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer (ILMZI)-based temperature sensor of a sandwich-like composite structure was proposed and experimentally demonstrated. Using simple cleaving and splicing operations, ILMZI was formed by compactly sandwiching a section of four-hole microstructure optical fiber (FHMF) of ultrashort length between two segments of multimode fibers and single-mode fibers in turn. Due to the large thermo-optic coefficient difference between the silica and air modes in FHMF, the sensor achieves a comparable sensitivity of 67.29 pm/degrees C over a wide dynamic range of 20.8 degrees C-100.4 degrees C. Because the sensing area length is only a few hundred micrometers, the long-term stability and anti-interference of the sensor are greatly enhanced. In addition, the large airhole design confines the propagation mode in silica medium by total internal reflection, reducing the interaction between the liquid sample and the sensing element, making the sensor inert to the ambient refractive index. The maximum response deviation of the sensor under microvibration disturbances is 3.51 x 10(-4) nm/degrees C, and the maximum cross-sensitivity under strain disturbances is only 0.0018 degrees C/mu epsilon. The proposed sensor is excellent in performance, easy in fabrication, simple in structure, and low in cost, which can be expected to be used in practical temperature sensing applications without any additional packaging.

Abstract:In this paper, a novel refractometer based on Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) is proposed and experimentally investigated. The MZI is composed of 2 micro bending cores (MBCs), one of which excites the cladding modes and the other couples the modes back. This structure is formed by high-frequency CO2 laser polishing and oxyhydrogen flame heating. With the unique deformation method, the interaction between the fiber core and the external status gets enhanced, moreover, higher modes in the cladding are excited, which leads to a high refractive index (RI) sensitivity. Due to the high temperature of the oxyhydrogen flame, the core of CO2 polished fiber is modulated, furthermore, the cladding shape of MBC tends to be circular. Hence, relatively small modulating regions of 500 μm can form for interference. In the experiment, 2 transmission dips are chosen for RI measuring, which possesses the wavelength of 1530.4 nm and 1600.8 nm, respectively. The RI sensitivities of the 2 transmission dips are -271.7 nm/RIU and -333.8 nm/RIU with the RI range of 1.33-1.42. The temperature characteristic is also experimentally analyzed and the temperature sensitivities of which are 0.121 nm/℃ and 0.171 nm/℃ in the range of 34℃-154℃. By solving the matrix equation, the proposed sensor can be applied for simultaneous measurement of RI and temperature.

Abstract:A new fiber interface Mach-Zehnder interferometer has been fabricated, to the best of our knowledge, in coreless fiber by femtosecond laser-inscription for temperature-insensitive refractive index measurement. A straight waveguide was inscribed along the central axis of the coreless fiber as the reference arm, and the other curved waveguide (interface waveguide) was then inscribed bending toward the cladding interface to obtain a strong evanescent field sensitive to ambient refractive index. This fiber interface Mach-Zehnder interferometer exhibits a high refractive index (RI) sensitivity of ∼3000 nm/RIU at an RI value of 1.432. Moreover, with the significant advantages of high mechanical strength and temperature independence, such a fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer may find many potential applications in biochemical sensing.

Abstract:A optical fiber strain sensor based on in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer is proposed. The in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer is fabricated by simply splicing a section of thin-core fiber between two single-mode fibers (SMFs). When the light couples into the thin-core fiber, part of the light couples into the core of the thin-core fiber and propagates as the core mode. While part of the light couples into the cladding of the thin-core fiber, and many cladding modes are excited. The lights at the core mode and the cladding modes in the thin-core fiber are prone to interference when recoupling into the SMF. By interrogating the wavelength shifts of the interference spectrum, the strain sensor is demonstrated. A strain sensitivity of -1.83 pm/με is achieved within the measurement range from 0 to 2000 με. The experimental results agree well with theoretical analyses. This strain sensor has the advantages of small size, simple fabrication, and high sensitivity.

Abstract:Two types of robust Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) sensors based on microcavity in a single mode optical fibers (SMFs) are proposed, which are fabricated by femtosecond laser inscription and chemical etching. The SMFs are modified by an improved point-by-point inscription method (called a transversal-scanning method) or a line-by-line scanning inscription method, which lead to form a rectangular-shaped or a V-shaped MZI after etching. The MZIs show high refractive index (RI) sensitivity above 105 nm/RIU with good linearity. Especially, the rectangular-shaped MZI exhibits a ultra-high RI sensitivity of -17503.73 nm/RIU with a linearity of 0.999 in the range of 1.3371-1.3407. The results of which are coincident with theoretical calculation. In addition, the MZI structures have good mechanical strength and temperature sensitivities in water are also studied.

Abstract:A novel and simple microfabrication method for in-line micro-cavity based fiber Mach–Zehnder interferometers (FMZIs) is proposed and demonstrated by nanosecond (ns) pulsed fibers lasers for the first time. Instead of using high-end femtosecond laser for the fabrication process, only conventional ns-pulsed fiber lasers of modest optical powers are required in our approach. Such fabricated fiber MZ interferometer has exhibited a high sensitivity of −20048 nm/RIU (refractive index unit) for the index sensing application. The achieved index sensitivity is in good agreement with the theoretical estimation.

Abstract:An in-fiber Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) with a micro-cavity (MC) exploited for strain and temperature simultaneous measurement. The research is carried out experimentally and simulatively. The MC fabricated by splicing a hollow quartz tube between two single-mode fibers serves as a light splitter for the two arms of MZI beams and a Fabry–Pérot interferometer (FPI) component at the same time. Thus both functions of the MZI and FPI were implemented in a single sensor. With aid of the different response of the MZI and FPI to the strain and temperature, this device can achieve a simultaneous measurement and the strain/temperature cross-sensitivity issue has been alleviated. Such a composite interference structure, possess the characteristics of easy making, high performance-price ratio provides a promising approach to implement strain and high-temperature simultaneous measurement.

Abstract:<p>We propose and demonstrate a temperature compensated highly sensitive refractive index (RI) sensor based on Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) cascaded with a fiber Bragg grating (FBG). The MZI is fabricated by inserting a segment of tapered single mode fiber (TSMF) in between two sections of multi-mode fiber (MMF), interference happens between the beams travelling in and around the TSMF. Due to the RI difference of between the silica and external RI around the TSMF is much larger than that between the core and cladding of the TSMF, it also can be called as a two-beam interferometer. Experimental results show that the MZI (S1) with RI and temperature responses of -3244.22 nm/RIU (Air-RI), -14296.23 nm/RIU (Liquid-RI) and 35.18 pm/℃ respectively. The FBG exhibits a temperature response of 12.25 pm/℃ and shows insensitive to RI. Ascribing to the MZI and FBG have different responses to variations in RI and temperature, solving the temperature crosstalk of RI sensor.</p>

Abstract:An all-fiber sensor based on a cascaded optical fiber device is proposed and demonstrated, and its sensor head is composed of a core-offset Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) and a long-period fiber grating (LPFG). In the experiment, two dips shaped by the intermodulation between the interference fringe of MZI and the resonant wavelength of LPFG are monitored. Experimental results show that temperature sensitivities of two dips are 0.060 7 nm/°C and 0.056 3 pm/°C, and the refractive index (RI) sensitivities are −18.025 nm/RIU and −55.06 nm/RIU, respectively. The simultaneous measurement of the temperature and external RI is demonstrated based on the sensitive matrix. Its low fabrication cost, simple configuration and high sensitivity make this sensor have potential applications in chemical and biological sensing.

Abstract:An inline fiber Mach-Zehnder Interferometer (MZI) that consisted of a standard single-mode fiber sandwiched between a core-offset and a peanut-shape joint is fabricated for the purpose of refractive index (RI) sensing. After one of the core-offset joints is replaced by a peanut-shape joint in an inline fiber MZI with the core-offset pair, the influence of the interference performance caused by the relative offset direction of the two core-offsets is avoided. The RI sensing characteristics under different core-offset displacement and interference arm length are studied. After bending the inline fiber MZI, the interference spectra become more stable, and the RI sensing performance is markedly improved. The RI sensitivity of −167.27 nm/RIU with a resolution of 2.39 × 10-4 RIU is achieved within the measured RI range of 1.333–1.373.

Abstract:<p>The dual microfiber coupler Mach-Zehnder interferometer (MZI) was proposed. Its optical and sensing characteristics have been theoretically analyzed by changing the geometrical structure parameters such as the diameter for both thick and thin microfibers, the microfiber spacing and the length of interference region. The dual microfiber coupler MZI was fabricated and experimentally demonstrated for sensing refractive index with a sensitivity of 408 nm/RIU in the range of 1.3381−1.3522. This MZI has a flexible structure and is promising to be integrated with planar waveguides to develop the novel photonic devices.</p>

Abstract:An optical fiber in-line Mach-Zehnder interferometer based on a pair of inner microholes in the fiber core is proposed and demonstrated for refractive index and temperature sensing. The microhole is fabricated by firstly inscribing a short line structure by femtosecond, and then discharging the short line area by using a fusion splicer. The incident light beam on the first microhole is divided into two parts, one remains traveling in the fiber core and the other is directed into the cladding and then collected by the second microhole after multiple reflections at the air/cladding interface. The two parts recombines in the fiber core, thus forming a Mach-Zehnder interferometer. By controlling the separation of the two microholes, transmission spectrum with different free spectral range can be obtained. The sensitivities achieved for refractive index and temperature are similar to 68.2 nm/ RIU and 57.8 pm/degrees C, respectively. Such a device is robust in structure, easy in fabrication, and convenient in operation.

Abstract:This paper presents the design, fabrication, and characterization of a Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) on a strip-loaded platform specifically developed for the measurement of refractive index variations in liquids. A novel approach of large opening in the sensing region enhances the sensitivity by using the analyte as the loading strip. This allows surpassing the performances of the conventional perforations and trenched-based MZIs and prevent protecting the reference arm. The implementation of this design resulted in a high confinement factor of approximately 23 in the cladding, enabling an effective interaction between the evanescent field and analyte. Ethanol-water solutions with varying concentrations were used as analyte for the characterization of the device. The strip-loaded waveguide was a 200 nm TiO thin film on a silicon dioxide wafer and a 1.2 m wide for 800 nm-thick nLOF resist served as loading strip. The sensing area featured a 10 m wide open-ing in the loading material with a sensing length of 5 mm. The homogeneous sensitivity was experimentally determined to be 0.128, demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed design, which enabled a refractive index change monitoring of 10 .
