Abstract:In this letter, we propose a broadband absorber with high efficiency by an atomic layer depositing nanometer iridium (Ir) film onto a porous anodic alumina (PAA) template. The average absorption is able to achieve as high as 93.4% from 400 to 1100 nm and the absorption efficiency can reach up to 96.8% for the improved structure of the quadrangular frustum pyramid array. Not only the hexagonal latticed structures of the PAA template but also many similar structures based on gratings or holes with the square latticed or other latticed mode can realize the broadband high absorption efficiency. The light absorbed within the Ir/Glass interface and the sidewalls of PAA by the light funneling effect both contribute to the broadband absorption with high efficiency. This absorber, described in this paper, can be manufactured with a low-cost and large-area manner and has potential applications in fields of light harvesting, imaging, etc.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a glass-based double-side cascade film stack structure for visible-infrared ultrabroadband absorption. The proposed structure demonstrates an average absorption as high as ∼95% over an ultrawide range of wavelengths from 0.4 μm to 20 μm. The high absorption feature of the different bandgap materials is applied in this absorption device to realize the ultrabroadband absorption, combining with the metal-dielectric-like configuration for those unmatched-admittance wavelengths and the graded index profile arrangement for the 0.4–2.5 μm band. The proposed ultrabroadband absorber shows a great angular tolerance up to 60° with the average absorption of 90% remaining. The proposed approach can have tremendous potential in fields of optical sensing, camouflage, optical imaging, passive cooling, and sustainable power generation, profiting from the good mechanical characteristics of this compact multilayer film structure and the low manufacture costs with the simple physical vapor deposition.

Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.
Broadband Absorption Coating for Large-Curvature Surfaces by Atomic Layer Deposition

Abstract:For many applications, large curvature surfaces or complicated 3D structures are required to absorb light that falls on them to reduce stray light or energy collection. A novel, to the best of our knowledge, strategy with a metal–dielectric film stack by the atomic layer deposition technique is put forward to achieve broadband absorption coating covering both sides of a quartz tube completely. Absorptive metallic material of titanium–aluminum–carbon composite and dielectric material of aluminum oxide ( A l 2 O 3 ) is employed to realize high absorption ( > 99 % ) for the 400–780 nm band with the configuration of a six-layer metal–dielectric film stack. Good angle insensitivity up to 50° for P - and S -polarizations is demonstrated experimentally with the proposed structure on a glass slab. The average absorption of the coated quartz tube reaches as high as 99% for all curving areas on the inner and outer sides, while the nonuniformity is confined to 1.5% for the axial and circumferential directions. This presented approach has enormous potential in the fields of optical detection, optical imaging, optical sensing, and energy management.

Abstract:An ultra-broadband selective absorber has been realized with a hierarchical structure through integrating vacuum impedance matched structure, quarter wavelength structure and gradient refractive index structure. Through optimizing the design parameters of the proposed hierarchical structure, an ultra-broadband infrared absorber covering three major atmospheric windows (0.7~2.5 μm, 3~5 μm and 8~14 μm) has been numerically and experimentally demonstrated. An overall absorption up to 80% covering all the three major atmospheric infrared windows and a ratio of the total absorptions within and beyond the windows as high as 5.88, has been achieved with the developed absorber. The high absorption and spectral selectivity of the absorber make it promising for sensitive broadband infrared spectroscopy detection. The proposed hierarchical structure also provides great design freedom with many tunable factors, making it convenient to extend the design for other applications. In addition, we developed a cost-effective lithography-free method for the fabrication of this structure. The design flexibility and fabrication convenience of this hierarchical structure render it suitable for the development of tailored selective broadband absorbers for targeted applications.

Abstract:In the 3-5 & mu;m mid-wave infrared (MWIR) atmospheric transparency window region, infrared detectors are widely applied in spectral imaging, remote sensing and other fields, and their rapid development has put forward higher requirements for infrared optical windows. Common mid-wave infrared optical materials such as germanium and zinc sulfide have poor mechanical properties, causing them difficult to meet various harsh environments. In this paper, a 3-layer film stack is proposed to achieve high transmission and high hardness by radio-frequency reactive magnetron sputtering with the single aluminum target. Two types of AlN/ Al2O3/AlN stack with top AlN thicknesses of 50 and 100 nm are studied to realize the best optical and mechanical characteristics. The average transmission increases up to 94.0% for 3-5 & mu;m with the double-side AlN/Al2O3/AlN stacks on the silicon substrate, while the hardness is significantly improved to-16.6 GPa for both types. After annealing at 500 degrees C and 750 degrees C for 6 h in a vacuum environment, the spectra of the two film stacks move towards the shorter wavelength slightly, and the hardness of both are obviously enhanced. The highest hardness of the film system reaches-20.8 GPa, making it far more resistant to sand erosion than ordinary antireflection films. The result shows that this film stack can withstand high temperature and gravel impact tests, meeting the service requirements of the harsh environment of the MWIR optical system.

Abstract:A near-infrared multi-narrowband absorber based on subwavelength metal-dielectric-metal grating structure was devised. The relationship between the parameters and the absorption performance was studied. By optimizing the geometrical parameters, a triple narrowband absorber with about 30-nm bandwidth was obtained. The electric and magnetic field distributions of the structure at the peak wavelength helped explain the nature of multi-narrowband absorption, which can be attributed to surface plasmon resonance and Fabry–Pérot resonance. The thickness of dielectric layer determines the absorption bands of the structure mostly due to Fabry–Pérot resonance. In addition, the absorber presents a satisfactory angular insensitive performance within 5° and can meet the demands for many applications.

Abstract:In this work, a near-perfect broadband absorber, consisting of Fe, MgF2, Fe, TiO2 and MgF2 planar film, is proposed and investigated through simulations and experiments. The Fe material is first applied in the multilayer film structure, and it is proved to be more favorable for achieving broadband absorption. MgF2 and TiO2 are chosen as anti-reflection coatings to decrease unwanted reflections. The proposed absorber is optimized by employing a hybrid numerical method combining the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the genetic algorithm (GA). Under normal incidence conditions, the average absorption of the absorber is 97.6% in the range of 400 to 1400 nm. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and phase analysis reveal that the anti-reflection property and the Fabry-Perot resonance result in broadband absorption performance. Furthermore, when an additional Fe-MgF2 layer is inserted on the bottom Fe layer, an average absorption of 97.9% in the range of 400 to 2000 nm can be achieved. Our approach could be of vital significance for numerous applications involving solar energy.

Abstract:A broadband absorber comprising tungsten cubic arrays, a alumina layer and a tungsten film, is numerically and experimentally investigated, which exhibits near-unity absorption of visible and near-infrared light from 400 nm to 1150 nm. Benefiting from high melting points of tungsten and alumina, this device has great application potential in solar cells and thermal emission.

Abstract:An ultra-narrow band absorber consisting of continuous silver and alumina films is investigated. Owing to Fabry–Pérot resonance and silver's inherent loss, an ultra-narrow spectral range of light can be entirely trapped in the structure. By varying thicknesses of metallic and dielectric films, absorption peak shifts in visible and near-infrared regions. When two such metal-insulator-metal stacks are cascaded, experimental results show that an ultra-narrow absorption bandwidth of 7 nm is achieved, though theoretical results give that of 2 nm. Features of high-efficiency and ultra-narrow band absorption have huge potential in optical filtering, thermal emitter design, etc.

Abstract:Turning the surfaces of noble metals (metasurfaces) into black (highly absorptive) surfaces can be potentially applied in thermophotovoltaics, sensing, tailoring thermal emissivity, etc. Here we demonstrate an extremely broadband absorber for the 900-1600 nm wavelength range with robust high absorption efficiency. The inexpensive droplet evaporation method is implemented to create patterns of nanoparticles dispersed on a gold film spaced by a thin dielectric layer. The diversity of the complicated random stacking of the chemically synthesized gold nanorods is the major factor for the broad absorption band. Such a metamaterial absorber may pave the way for cost-effective manufacture of large-area black metasurfaces.

Abstract:A thin-film perfect electromagnetic absorber with a tunable response in the infrared (IR) region is proposed using a metal-dielectric-metal configuration, which consists of a Ti top layer and a Ge spacer layer on a Ti substrate. The thin-film structure simplifies the absorber design by tuning the thicknesses of the two layers, which is suitable for large-scale fabrication by matured deposition technologies. The absorber supports perfect IR absorption with tunability from 3 µm to over 15 µm. Furthermore, the total thickness is much smaller than the wavelength, and the absorption has small iridescence. Based on this design, we demonstrated two samples with one supporting single-band absorption in the atmospheric absorption window (5-8 µm) and the other one supporting dual-band absorption in the two atmospheric transmission windows (3-5 and 8-13 µm). These absorption signatures can find applications in IR invisibility and radiative cooling.

Abstract:Applications of metallic glass thin films (MGTFs) in the optical area have seldom been reported. We successfully design and fabricate a broadband and durable absorber with MGTFs. It is found that the absorber, with a total thickness of only ∼230 nm smaller than the light wavelength, exhibits excellent performance, that is, an average absorption of >90% from the visible to the near-infrared range (500-1300 nm). This is of significance for the optical application of MGTFs with the potential for large-scale fabrication using superplastic deformation in the supercooled liquid region of MGTFs.

Abstract:A polarization-independent and omnidirectional nearly perfect absorber in the visible region has been proposed. The absorber is two-layer structure consisting of a subwavelength metal grating layer embedded in the high refractive index and lossless dielectric layer on the metal substrate. Extraordinary optical absorption with absorption peaks of over 99% can be achieved over the whole visible region for both TM and TE polarization. This absorption is attributed to cavity mode (CM) resonance caused by the coupled surface plasmon polaritons (SPP). Through adjusting the grating thickness, the absorption peak can be tuned linearly, which is highly advantageous to design various absorbers. Furthermore, the absorbance retains ultra-high over a wide angular range of incidence for both TM and TE polarization. This nearly perfect absorber offers great potential in the refractive index (RI) sensors, integrated photodetectors, solar cells and so on.
Transparent and Ultra-Wideband Microwave Absorber Made of Glass and Resistive Film

Abstract:A transparent absorber structure made of resistive film and glass is presented in this paper. The structure has the effect of ultra-wideband, polarization-independent, and high absorption during microwave band. According to the simulation, the structure has absorbance more than 75% in the region of 4.3~21.5GHz band under the incidence of linear polarized wave. The structure not only protects resistive film from the outside, but also makes it easier to integrate with laminated glass. Owe to its simple structure and moderate thickness, it will have more applications in the field of transparent stealth.

Abstract:In this paper, we have designed and experimentally demonstrated a broadband absorber in the mid-infrared region based on the impedance matching method. The absorber is made of planar multilayered dielectric and metallic films without involving lithography in fabrication. Our measurements reveal high absorption over 85% in the wavelength range of 2.2-6.2 mu m. This wideband absorption is shown to be independent of the polarization and can be maintained over a range of incident angles up to 45 degrees. The resultant absorber has potential applications for thermal shielding, camouflaging, sensing, etc. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:In this paper, a similar Fabry-Perot cavity structure utilizing a multilayer film structure consisting of an ultrathin metal film is demonstrated for absorbing the infrared ray. This structure has low emissivity in the atmospheric window (3–5 and 8–14 μm) and high emissivity in the nonatmospheric window (5–8 μm). These properties improved the stealth performance which causes the high emissivity in 5–8 μm to radiate more energy to reduce its temperature. Based on this, the periodic microstructures were added to the surface of the materials that enhanced the absorption of terahertz wave (0.1–2.7 THz). The absorber based on multilayer film has a simple structure and low manufacturing cost. This work may provide a new strategy for infrared and terahertz compatible stealth technology.

Abstract:A near-perfect absorber for the visible regime based on metal-dielectric-metal subwavelength grating structure with the refractory metals is designed and demonstrated numerically. The absorber presents an average absorption over 98.4% in the visible regime at normal incidence. Angle-relative analysis shows that the proposed structure has good angle-tolerance. The high average absorption (86.6%) in the visible region can be maintained with the incident angles up to 60°. Through the analysis of the magnetic field, the physical origin is verified that this excellent absorption performance mainly stems from the cooperative effect of surface plasmonic resonances and the intrinsic broadband spectral responses by the refractory metals. In addition, the dependence of the absorption spectrum of the proposed absorber on the structural parameters is analyzed. This work provides an idea for the design of high-performance absorbers and has potential applications in advanced light energy capture and integration systems.
