Abstract:We present a novel scheme for ultrabroadband and omnidirectional perfect absorbers with compact multilayer film structure. Our proposed device shows an average absorption of similar to 98% over a wide range of wavelengths ranging from 400 to 2000 nm. The ultrabroadband characteristics are achieved with strongly overlapped optical resonances by designing a tandem structure composed of three absorptive materials, while the overall structure features a graded refractive index profile to obtain a wideband antireflection property. In addition to the high efficiency and ultrabroadband absorption, our perfect absorbers exhibit a great angular tolerance up to 60 degrees, which is attributed to not only relatively broad resonances but also negligible propagation phase shifts in ultrathin highly absorbing layers. Lastly, we explore the effect of the number of semiconductor-metal stacks on the performance of the absorber. The presented approach can have tremendous potential for various applications, such as solar-thermal energy harvesting, thermoelectrics, detection, and imaging.

Abstract:In this paper, we design a solar absorber based on the Si 3 N 4 –W–Ti–SiO 2 insulator–metal–insulator structure and demonstrate it using the finite difference time domain (FDTD) method. The absorption rate of the absorber consisting of a multi-layer structure with cross etching is over 90% in the bandwidth of 500 nm to 2995 nm with an average absorption rate of 98.3%. There are three peaks at 620 nm, 1002 nm and 1761 nm with peak heights of 99.8%, 99.8% and 99.0%, respectively. By analyzing the distribution of electric and magnetic fields in different sections of the absorber, it is found that the physical mechanism of the structure with high absorptivity is due to the interaction of propagating surface plasmon resonance and local surface plasma resonance. The effects of different structural parameters and the angle of incidence of a light source on the absorber absorption are discussed. The absorber can be used in solar thermal systems, thermal photovoltaics and thermoelectronic devices.

Abstract:In this work, based on the finite difference time domain method, we propose and investigate an efficient nanoscale solar absorber based on multilayer nanorings. The absorber is made up of a 4-layer TiO 2 -TiN nanoring array, a TiO 2 insulating layer and a Ti substrate, all of which are high-melting materials. The absorber exhibits an absorption efficiency surpassing 95% across a wavelength span of 280-4000 nm, thereby attaining a bandwidth of 3720 nm. Additionally, it maintains an average absorption efficiency of 98.8% throughout the entire wavelength spectrum. Furthermore, calculations reveal that the absorber possesses a solar spectrum-weighted absorption of up to 99%. The analysis of the electric field distribution indicates that the observed intense absorption is attributed to the plasmonic resonance phenomenon, along with the near-field coupling effects exhibited by the multi-turn nanorings. In addition, our calculations revealed a remarkably high thermal radiation efficiency for this absorber, specifically 99.2% at 2000 K and 98.9% at 1500 K, respectively. Therefore, we then calculated the photothermal conversion efficiency of the absorber. At the solar concentration factor C=1000, the photothermal conversion efficiency surpasses 90% across the entire temperature range. At C=100, it is still greater than 80% at 1000 K. At C=10, it is still greater than 80% at 700 K. And at C=1, it is still greater than 80% at 500 K. These results indicate that absorbers can be used in a variety of environments. Furthermore, the absorber sustains its superior absorption capabilities at wider solar radiation angles, demonstrating insensitive properties to polarization variations and robust tolerance to manufacturing inaccuracies. These exceptional attributes render it highly suited for diverse applications in solar energy harvesting and photothermal transformation.

Abstract:In this work, we design a solar absorber and thermal emitter with ultra-broadband perfect absorption and high thermal radiation efficiency. The solar absorber has a high absorption efficiency of 91.5 % in the full wavelength range (280–4000 nm), and the weighted average absorption efficiency (AM1.5) is as high as 99 % by the finite difference time domain method (FDTD) simulation calculation. And the absorption bandwidth with absorption efficiency greater than 90 % reaches 2929 nm (280–3209 nm), and the average absorption efficiency in this band is as high as 97.4 %. Such strong absorption is due to the plasmon resonance and near-field coupling of the multilayer nanodisks. In addition to being used in solar absorbers, the structure also has potential applications in thermal emitters. The novelty of this work is to explore the application of the structure in the field of thermal radiation, and the optimal working temperature of the structure for thermal radiation is obtained. Through calculation, we approximately consider that the optimal working temperature of the structure as a thermal emitter is 2000 K, and the thermal radiation efficiency at this temperature is 94.8 %. The structure proposed by us is polarization-independent, insensitive to incident angle changes, the absorption spectra of transverse electric (TE) mode and transverse magnetic (TM) mode are the same, and the absorption efficiency remains 80 % even when the incident angle is increased to 60 ° . The excellent performance makes the structure widely used in the fields of solar energy absorption and emission.

Abstract:The main development direction for current solar technology is to improve absorption efficiency and stability. To bridge this gap, we design in this paper a structure consisting of two multilayer disc stacks of different radii, one topped by a TiO2 disc and the other by a cascade disc stack composed of SiO2-Ti, for use in thermal emitters and solar absorbers. The innovation of our work is the exploitation of multiple Fabry–Perot resonances in SiO2-Ti cascade optical cavities to develop absorber bandwidths while investigating it in the field of thermal emission and many aspects affecting the efficiency of the absorber. The finite difference time domain method (FDTD) results show absorption averages as high as 96.68% with an absorption bandwidth of 2445 nm (A > 90%) at 280 nm–3000 nm solar incidence and even higher weighted averages as high as 98.48% at 1.5 solar air mass (AM) illumination. In order to investigate the physical mechanisms of our designed absorber in a high absorption state, we analyzed the electric field distributions of its four absorption peaks and concluded that its high absorption is mainly caused by the coupling of multiple Fabry–Perot resonance modes in the cascaded optical cavity. While considering this high efficiency, we also investigated the effect of complex environments such as extreme high temperatures and changes in the angle of incidence of the absorber, and the results show that the thermal radiation efficiency of the emitter is 96.79% at an operating temperature of 1700 K, which is higher than its thermal radiation efficiency of 96.38% at an operating temperature of 1500 K, which is a perfect result. On the other hand, we conclude that the designed structure is independent of polarization, while the absorber still has 88.22% absorption at incidence angles of up to 60°, both in transverse electric (TE) and transverse magnetic (TM) modes. The results of this study can help improve the performance of future solar absorbers and expand their application areas.

Abstract:In this paper, an ultra-wideband solar absorber consisting of a four-layer structure of Al 2 O 3 -TiN-Al 2 O 3 -Ti is proposed. The proposed absorber achieves an average absorption of 97.85% in the wavelength range of 250-2000 nm (49.96% improvement over the reference planar structure), and its bandwidth of absorption over 90 % is even as high as 1742 nm. As a result of the symmetrical design of the structure, the absorber has polarization insensitivity and wide-angle absorption characteristics. In particular, the absorber has a large process tolerance in the structural parameters and a high degree of universality for other metals and dielectric materials, which is highly advantageous in manufacturing. In addition, we explored the reasons for the high absorption of the structure in detail, discussed the influence of different structures on the absorption, and analyzed the absorption characteristics and thermal conversion efficiency of the structure under the solar spectrum. The proposed structure provides a broader bandwidth and higher light absorption than the recently reported work and further reduces the structure's thickness. Therefore, the absorber will have broad application prospects in photothermal conversion, solar cells, imaging, and stealth.

Abstract:In this paper, we designed an ultra-wideband solar energy absorber and approved it numerically by the finite-difference time-domain simulation. The designed solar energy absorber can achieve a high absorption of more than 90% of light in a continuous 3.506 μm (0.596 μm–4.102 μm) wavelength range. The basic structure of the absorber is based on silicon dioxide colloidal crystal and Ti. Since the materials have a high melting point, the designed solar energy absorber can work normally under high temperature, and the structure of this solar energy absorber is simpler than most solar energy absorbers fabricated with traditional metal. In the entire wavelength band researched, the average absorption of the colloidal crystal-based solar energy absorber is as high as 94.3%, demonstrating an excellent performance under the incidence light of AM 1.5 solar spectrum. In the meantime, the absorption spectrum of the solar energy absorber is insensitive to the polarization of light. In comparison to other similar structures, our designed solar energy absorber has various advantages, such as its high absorption in a wide spectrum range and that it is low cost and easy to make.

Abstract:Wideband perfect light absorbers covering visible and near-infrared solar optical radiations are significant for solar thermal energy systems. In this work, titanium and silicon dioxide multilayer thin film structures were investigated for perfect light absorption in wideband solar optical radiation spectral range from 400 nm to 2500 nm wavelength. Wideband solar light absorbers with different numbers of titanium and silicon dioxide layers and different layer thicknesses were designed, fabricated and characterized. It is found that the optimal wideband solar light absorber consists of only six titanium and silicon dioxide layers that form two cascade optical nanocavities, and increasing the number of optical cavities does not improve optical absorption in the solar spectrum. A super-wideband solar light absorber 97.97% total absorptance over the wavelength range from 400 nm to 1700 nm has been experimentally demonstrated. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Solar absorbers, which harvest solar irradiation in the form of heat, have promising prospects in electricity, heating, desalination, and energy storage. However, in previous work, absorbers are usually designed as nanostructures involving photolithography to obtain a superior spectral absorption performance, which inevitably increases the cost and complexity of fabrication. Here, we propose a pattern-free absorber consisting of the TiN-SiO2-based multilayer structure for effective solar energy utilization. Numerical results show that the maximum average spectral absorption of a 3-cell multilayer structure is up to 93.5% at wavelengths of 0.3-2.5 μm. The underlying physical mechanism can be explained by the coupling of superposed Fabry-Perot (FP) resonances and the intrinsic absorption of TiN, which is further confirmed via the electric field and power dissipation density distributions. The effect of the geometric parameters and materials of multilayer structures on the spectral absorption performance is investigated. Moreover, we discuss the influence of the incidence angle on solar absorbers and demonstrate that an average spectral absorption of more than 80% can be obtained even at a large incidence angle of 60°. Finally, when the number of cells in the multilayer structure is increased to 6, the average spectral absorption can reach 96%. The findings in this work will deepen the understanding of FP resonance and pave a novel path for efficient solar thermal energy utilization.
Ultra-broadband high-efficiency solar absorber based on Ti-GaAs-Au structure for UV to near-infrared spectral range

Abstract:In this study, we propose an ultra-broadband solar absorber composed of a trapezoidal base, an outer circular ring, and four nano-cylinders. The absorber has a covered bandwidth range of 300–4000 nm and a temperature range of 373–973 K. The average absorptance within the mentioned wavelength range is over 96.52%, and the efficiency of solar energy thermal conversion is above 0.9 at 373–973 K under a solar concentration factor of 1000, with a maximum efficiency of 0.9644. Analysis of its absorption mechanism using the finite-difference time-domain method indicates that the proposed solar absorber's outstanding absorption performance is due to the excitation of surface plasmon polaritons, localized surface plasmon resonances, and cavity resonances enhanced electromagnetic fields. This result has also been validated by the impedance matching theory. Moreover, the proposed solar absorber exhibits insensitivity to different polarization angles and maintains a high absorption effect in the range of 0°–70° incidence angle. The designed solar absorber has potential applications in areas such as seawater purification, wastewater treatment, and steam power generation systems.

Abstract:The efficient absorption of solar spectrum radiation is the most critical step in solar thermal utilization. In this work, a near-perfect metamaterial solar absorber with broadband, wide angle, polarization insensitivity, and high-temperature resistance is proposed and investigated. The absorber takes advantage of the high melting point material, which consists of TiN reflector, SiO2 insulating layer, and TiN rings array. In the spectral range of 300-2500 nm, an average absorption of 97.6% is achieved. The percentage of energy absorption in the AM1.5 spectral radiation can reach 95.8%. The electric and magnetic field distributions show that the high absorption is attributed to the coupling effect of surface plasmon resonance, guided mode resonance and cavity resonance. Furthermore, the absorber is found to maintain high absorption performance at large angles of solar radiation and to be insensitive to polarization. The designed absorber maintains its broadband absorption performance well within certain geometric tolerances. This reduces the complexity and cost of manufacturing and facilitates practical applications. The research indicates that this work will benefit the design and application of solar thermal conversion and thermophotovoltaic systems.

Abstract:In this work, a near-perfect broadband absorber, consisting of Fe, MgF2, Fe, TiO2 and MgF2 planar film, is proposed and investigated through simulations and experiments. The Fe material is first applied in the multilayer film structure, and it is proved to be more favorable for achieving broadband absorption. MgF2 and TiO2 are chosen as anti-reflection coatings to decrease unwanted reflections. The proposed absorber is optimized by employing a hybrid numerical method combining the transfer matrix method (TMM) and the genetic algorithm (GA). Under normal incidence conditions, the average absorption of the absorber is 97.6% in the range of 400 to 1400 nm. The finite difference time domain (FDTD) method and phase analysis reveal that the anti-reflection property and the Fabry-Perot resonance result in broadband absorption performance. Furthermore, when an additional Fe-MgF2 layer is inserted on the bottom Fe layer, an average absorption of 97.9% in the range of 400 to 2000 nm can be achieved. Our approach could be of vital significance for numerous applications involving solar energy.
Ultra-Broadband Solar Absorber and High-Efficiency Thermal Emitter from UV to Mid-Infrared Spectrum

Abstract:Solar energy is currently a very popular energy source because it is both clean and renewable. As a result, one of the main areas of research now is the investigation of solar absorbers with broad spectrum and high absorption efficiency. In this study, we create an absorber by superimposing three periodic Ti-Al2O3-Ti discs on a W-Ti-Al2O3 composite film structure. We evaluated the incident angle, structural components, and electromagnetic field distribution using the finite difference in time domain (FDTD) method in order to investigate the physical process by which the model achieves broadband absorption. We find that distinct wavelengths of tuned or resonant absorption may be produced by the Ti disk array and Al2O3 through near-field coupling, cavity-mode coupling, and plasmon resonance, all of which can effectively widen the absorption bandwidth. The findings indicate that the solar absorber's average absorption efficiency can range from 95.8% to 96% over the entire band range of 200 to 3100 nm, with the absorption bandwidth of 2811 nm (244–3055 nm) having the highest absorption rate. Additionally, the absorber only contains tungsten (W), titanium (Ti), and alumina (Al2O3), three materials with high melting points, which offers a strong assurance for the absorber's thermal stability. It also has a very high thermal radiation intensity, reaching a high radiation efficiency of 94.4% at 1000 K, and a weighted average absorption efficiency of 98.3% at AM1.5. Additionally, the incidence angle insensitivity of our suggested solar absorber is good (0–60°) and polarization independence is good (0–90°). These benefits enable a wide range of solar thermal photovoltaic applications for our absorber and offer numerous design options for the ideal absorber.

Abstract:As a method of effectively harnessing solar energy resources, the absorption efficiency of solar absorbers is of paramount importance in optimizing energy use. We propose an ultra-broadband solar absorber that utilizes a multi-resonant cavity nanopillar disc structure incorporating V2O5 and TiN. The absorption properties of the absorber are determined by the finite-difference time-domain simulation method. The results indicate an absorbance of over 90% across the entire spectral range of 300 to 2500 nm and a perfect absorption of over 99% from 540 to 2290 nm. In addition, the absorber is polarization-independent and angle-insensitive with the average absorbance above 90% even at a 60-deg incidence angle. The broadband absorption is mainly achieved by the synergistic effects of surface plasmon excitation, localized surface plasmon resonance, and multi-resonant cavity structure. The photothermal conversion efficiency of the absorber is 95.9% at 800 K. The proposed solar absorber has potential applicability in thermal photovoltaic devices and solar energy harvesting.

Abstract:Solar energy is a widely used clean energy source, and solar absorber with wider spectrum and higher efficiency is more ideal for various applications of solar energy. In this paper, an efficient and ultra-broadband solar absorber is proposed, which is composed of periodic nano-disk combination array on TiO2 thin film. In our work, we use FDTD solutions to simulated and calculated the field distribution, absorption spectrum and thermal radiation intensity of the structure to explore the physical mechanism of the resonator. Among them, the resonance between the polarization direction of the three-layer nano-disk and the plasmon resonance at the junction of TiN nano-disk and TiO2 have obtained the ultra-broadband high-efficiency absorption of the absorber. The absorption bandwidth (A > 90%) reaches 1869 nm (288.5 nm-2157.5 nm), the average absorption efficiency in this range is 96.56%, and the average absorption efficiency in the whole wave band (200–2600 nm) is 93.77%. In addition, the structure has extremely strong heat radiation intensity, with high emission efficiency of 92.83% at 1500 K. Furthermore, the solar absorber proposed by us is polarization independent. In Transverse Electric (TE) mode and Transverse Magnetic (TM) mode, the increase of incident angle causes slight spectral shift of absorption spectrum, and the maximum deviation of average absorption efficiency is 2.17%. Ultra-broad absorption band, high absorption efficiency, high radiation intensity and polarization independence make it competent for thermo-photovoltaics and other high-power optoelectronic, radiation energy and information collection processes.

Abstract:Based on the finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method, a wide-band solar absorber (WA) is constructed and simulated in this paper. Due to the Fabry-Perot resonance (FPR), the near-field resonance mode , the surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and gap resonance in different structure, the WA obtains efficient and wide-band absorption. The absorption efficiency in 373–1967 nm band is >90 %, and in 817–1830 nm band is >98 %, and the average absorption efficiency at air mass 1.5 (AM 1.5) reaches 91.10 % (280–2500 nm). The structure is insensitive to the change of incident angle. The reduced absorption efficiency is 9.23 % when the incident angle increases from 0° to 60°. In addition, the structure can work stably at high temperature, and the thermal radiation efficiency at 1500 K is as high as 85.13 %. Due to the efficient and wide-band absorption and high thermal emission efficiency, the WA can be widely used in solar energy collection and energy radiation.

Theoretical calculation by finite-difference time-domain (FDTD) method shows that the absorber could achieve a bandwidth of 3720 nm in the spectrum range of 280 nm - 4000 nm. The average absorptivity of the absorber can reach 96.9%. The physical mechanism of the absorber is analyzed from the impedance matching theory and electromagnetic field distribution. Furthermore, simulation results illustrate that the absorber is polarization-insensitive and allows a wide range of incident angles. The absorption spectrum is basically consistent with that of air mass 1.5 (AM1.5). And it can achieve high thermal conversion efficiencies over a wide range of temperatures. These results indicate that the absorber has a good development prospect in solar energy collection.

Abstract:In this paper, we utilize Ti and InAs materials to design a device capable of perfect solar absorption and high thermal emission efficiency. This structure is capable of generating surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and cavity resonance (CR). As this structure produces different combinations of resonances in different bands, high absorption is obtained in the full band range (280–3000 nm). The average absorption rate reaches as high as 96.7% from 280 nm to 3000 nm. The bandwidth where the absorption rate exceeds 90% measures 2720 nm (280–3000 nm). Under AM 1.5 conditions, the weighted average absorption rate is 95.8%. Additionally, this structure is insensitive to the angle of incidence. As the incident angle increases from 0° to 50°, the average absorption remains greater than 90%. Even when the incident angle is increased to 60°, the average absorption rate is 87.1%. Besides the excellent absorption performance, this structure also exhibits good thermal emission performance, with the thermal radiation efficiency reaching as high as 96.5% at 1100 K. These remarkable absorption and thermal radiation properties make this structure highly versatile, with potential applications spanning solar energy collection and radiation-related fields.

Abstract:Improving the solar cell's ability to capture solar photons and enhancing its absorption of light have a significant impact on increasing the photoelectric conversion efficiency (PCE) of solar cells. In this study, we propose to embed a layer of light-trapping structure (LTS) utilizing Ti nanoparticles and their oxide TiO2 periodically arranged in the window layer of GaAs thin-film solar cells. This structure improves the light absorption efficiency by increasing the optical range and surface plasmon resonance of light inside the cell, which in turn improves the PCE of the solar cell. Simulation results show that the GaAs solar cell proposed in this paper achieves an average absorptivity of 94.99% in the visible and near-infrared wavelength bands, and the PCE reaches 31.77%, which is close to the Shockley-Queisser limit level of the single-junction solar cell. And it realizes the characteristic of perfect absorption in the wavelength range of 555-800 nm. The cell structure proposed in this study is characterized by high bandwidth perfect absorption and high PCE, which is insensitive to the angle of incidence, and provides a new idea for the design of new high-efficiency thin-film solar cells.

Abstract:In this study, we investigated an absorber based on a center-aligned tandem nanopillar array for ultra-broadband solar energy harvesting theoretically. A high-efficiency, omnidirectional absorber was obtained by introducing the center-aligned tandem nanopillar array embedded in an Al2O3 dielectric layer. The multi-coupling modes at different wavelengths were interpreted. The strong absorption can be adjusted by changing the radii and heights of nanopillars. According to the simulation results, the average absorptance of the absorber exceeded 94% in the wavelength range from 300 nm to 2000 nm. In addition, the high-efficiency absorption was insensitive to the incident angle and polarization state. The research not only proposed an absorber which possesses a huge potential value for application areas, such as thermal photovoltaic systems, infrared detection, and isotropic absorption sensors, but also pointed out a new way to design an absorber with high efficiency in an ultrabroad wavelength range.
