Abstract:Optical whispering-gallery microresonators have attracted considerable interest for ultrasensitive ultrasound detection and photoacoustic imaging because of the combination of high quality factors and small cavity sizes. In the last decade, ultrasonic sensors with on-chip microcavities have been extensively developed; however, they are unsuitable for the near-field photoacoustic microscopy of micro/nanoscale objects in complex biological environments and endoscopic imaging. In this work, we developed ultrasonic sensors using two types of encapsulated microsphere resonators with different cavity materials. A noise equivalent pressure of as low as 160 Pa at 20 MHz was achieved with the acoustic response up to 70 MHz at-6 d B. Furthermore,the microsensor was used for photoacoustic microscopy in which we successfully performed 3 D imaging of hairs and leaf veins.The microsphere ultrasonic sensor has considerable potential as a probe-type ultrasonic detector for near-field photoacoustic microscopy of micro/nanoscale objects such as subcellular structures and high-resolution endoscopic photoacoustic imaging with its high sensitivity and wide bandwidth.

Abstract:This paper reports a mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor for high-sensitivity trace gas sensing. The sensor primarily contains a sphere-cylinder coupled acoustic resonator, a cylindrical buffer chamber, and a fiber-optic acoustic sensor. The acoustic field distributions of this mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor and the conventional T-type resonant photoacoustic sensor have been carefully evaluated, showing that the first-order resonance frequency of the present mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor is reduced by nearly a half compared to that of the T-type resonant photoacoustic sensor. The volume of the developed photoacoustic cavity is only about 0.8 cm3. Trace methane is selected as the target analytical gas and a detection limit of 101 parts-per-billion at 100-s integration time has been achieved, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 1.04 × 10-8 W·cm-1·Hz-1/2. The developed mini-resonant photoacoustic sensor provides potential for high-sensitivity trace gas sensing in narrow spaces.

Abstract:This paper proposes a novel microcone-curved resonant photoacoustic cell (MCR-PAC) for highly sensitive trace gas detection. The MCR-PAC features with microcone-curved resonant region and cylindrical buffer chamber, which dominates the photoacoustic signal amplification. By introducing the hyperbolic eccentricity as a new optimization dimension, the quality factor of the MCR-PAC is remarkably strengthened to enhance the acoustic pressure amplitude. At an eccentricity value of 5, the volume of the photoacoustic resonant cavity is approximately 0.23 cm3. Targeting trace acetylene, the system achieves a minimum detection limit of 1.41 ppb with an integration time of 290 s, corresponding normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient is 1.88×10-9 W·cm-1·Hz-1/2. Compared to the traditional T-type PAC, the overall performance of MCR-PAC has been enhanced nearly fourfold. With its compact millimeter-scale dimensions and high sensitivity, the MCR-PAC demonstrates extensive potential for application in environmental monitoring and breath diagnostics.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultrasonic detector with unprecedented broad bandwidth and high sensitivity, based on an imprinted polymer optical microring. It has an acoustic response of up to 350 MHz at -3 dB and noise-limited detectable pressure as low as 105 Pa in this frequency range. Application of such a detector in photoacoustic imaging leads to improved axial resolving ability compared with using the conventional ultrasound detector, and sub-3 mu m axial resolution is achieved, which is more than a 2-fold improvement with respect to the reported record. The device's miniaturized cavity height guarantees its broadband response, and at the same time, its high optical quality factor ensures the detection sensitivity. Our work suggests that the polymer-based miniature microring resonator works as a high-performance ultrasound detector and has potential for acquiring volumetric photoacoustic images with cellular/subcellular resolution in three dimensions.

Abstract:Photoacoustic microscopy (PAM) does not rely on contrast agent to image the optical absorption contrast in biological tissue. It is uniquely suited for measuring several tissue physiological parameters, such as hemoglobin oxygen saturation, that would otherwise remain challenging. Researchers are designing new clinical diagnostic tools and multimodal microscopic systems around PAM to fully unleash its potential. However, the sizeable and opaque piezoelectric ultrasonic detectors commonly used in PAM impose a serious constraint. Our solution is a coverslip-style optically transparent ultrasound detector based on a polymeric optical micro-ring resonator (MRR) with a total thickness of 250 μm. It enables highly-sensitive ultrasound detection over a wide receiving angle with a bandwidth of 140 MHz, which corresponds to a photoacoustic saturation limit of 287 cm −1 , at an estimated noise-equivalent pressure (NEP) of 6.8 Pa. We also established a theoretical framework for designing and optimizing the MRR for PAM.

Abstract:The achievable sensitivity level of photo-acoustic trace-gas sensors essentially depends on the performances of the acoustic transducer. In this work, the mechanical response of different silicon-based micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS) is characterized, aiming at investigating both their mechanical properties, namely the resonance frequency and the quality factor, and the minimum detection limit (MDL) achievable when they are exploited as an acoustic-to-voltage transducer in a trace-gas photoacoustic setup. For this purpose, a 4.56 μm Continuous-Wave (CW) quantum cascade laser (QCL) is used to excite a strong N 2 O roto-vibrational transition with a line strength of 2.14 × 10 −19 cm/molecule, and the detection of MEMS oscillations is performed via an interferometric readout. As a general trend, the minimum detection limit decreases when the resonance frequency investigated increases, achieving a value of 15 parts per billion with a 3 dB cut-off lock-in bandwidth equal to 100 mHz, around 10 kHz.

Abstract:We proposed and designed a high-sensitivity fiber-optic photoacoustic gas analyzer based on resonant Herriott multi-pass cell (MPC) and fiber-optic cantilever acoustic sensor, which realized the double enhancement of the excitation and detection of the photoacoustic signal. The chamber volume of the miniature photoacoustic cell was 157 mL. The laser was reflected 20 times and reached an optical path length of 4 m in the PA cell, achieving the excitation enhancement of the photoacoustic signal. We conducted a comparative experiment between the Herriott-MPC and the single-pass cell, the results showed that the 2f signal of the photoacoustic system based on Herriott-MPC was enhanced by about 16 times. By using a near-infrared laser with a center wavelength of 1651 nm, the performance of the PA gas analyzer for CH4 detection was evaluated. Experimental results show that the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the system is achieved to be 3.7 ppb. Furthermore, the calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient is equal to 8.3×10-10 cm-1WHz-1/2. The continuous monitoring of CH4 in the environment for five consecutive days proved the feasibility and stability of the trace gas analyzer.

Abstract:A novel spectrophone sensor prototype consisting of a T-shaped acoustic microresonator (T-mR) in off-beam quartz-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (T-mR QEPAS) is introduced for the first time. Its performance was evaluated and optimized through an acoustic model and experimental investigation via detection of water vapor in the atmosphere. The present work shows that the use of T-mR in QEPAS based sensor can improve the detection sensitivity by a factor of up to ~30, compared with that using only a bare QTF. This value is as high as that obtained in a conventional "on-beam" QEPAS, while keeping the advantages of "off-beam" QEPAS configuration: it is no longer necessary to couple excitation light beam through the narrow gap between the QTF prongs. In addition, the T-mR is really suitable for mass production with high precision.

Abstract:Optical ultrasonic probes, exemplified by Fabry–Perot cavities on optical fibers, have small sizes, high sensitivity, and pure optical characteristics, making them highly attractive in high-resolution ultrasonic/photoacoustic imaging, especially in near-field or endoscopic scenarios. Taking a different approach, we demonstrate an ultrasensitive and broadband ultrasound microprobe formed by an optical whispering-gallery-mode polymer microcavity coupled to a U-shaped microfiber. With the high-quality (Q) factors (>106), the noise equivalent pressure of the ultrasound microprobe reaches 1.07 mPa/√Hz with a record broadband response of 150 MHz and a large detection angle of 180°. Our results show that this optical microprobe can overcome the strong decay resulting from ultrasound diverging and medium absorption through short working distances. We further demonstrate high-quality in vivo whole-body photoacoustic imaging of a zebrafish larva. Our implementation provides a new strategy for developing miniature ultrasound detectors and holds great potential for broad applications.

Abstract:To realize all-optical passive detection of CH4 in narrow spaces and harsh environments, a compact cantilever-enhanced fiber-optic photoacoustic sensor (CEFPS) resistant to electromagnetic and ambient noise interference is proposed. Through theoretical analysis and finite element simulation, a miniaturized photoacoustic cell (PAC) with diffusion holes has been designed and fabricated. The diffusion holes are used for the circulation of the gas to be measured and attenuate the external noise coupled into the PAC. The concentration information of CH4 is obtained by demodulating the vibration amplitude of the built-in cantilever generated by the photoacoustic pressure. The design of the built-in cantilever structure avoids the possibility of mechanical damage and reduces the interference of external noise in the detection of photoacoustic signals. The experimental results and the Allan-Werle deviation analysis of the CH4 signal show that the minimum detection limit (MDL) is 0.32 ppm with an integration time of 60 s. The normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient is calculated as 2.44 × 10−8 cm−1 W/Hz1/2. The developed CEFPS achieves performance comparable to conventional resonant photoacoustic spectroscopy CH4 detectors, although the volume is two orders of magnitude lower.

Abstract:Abstract Photoacoustic dual-comb spectroscopy (DCS), converting spectral information in the optical frequency domain to the audio frequency domain via multi-heterodyne beating, enables background-free spectral measurements with high resolution and broad bandwidth. However, the detection sensitivity remains limited due to the low power of individual comb lines and the lack of broadband acoustic resonators. Here, we develop cavity-enhanced photoacoustic DCS, which overcomes these limitations by using a high-finesse optical cavity for the power amplification of dual-frequency combs and a broadband acoustic resonator with a flat-top frequency response. We demonstrate high-resolution spectroscopic measurements of trace amounts of C 2 H 2 , NH 3 and CO in the entire telecommunications C-band. The method shows a minimum detection limit of 0.6 ppb C 2 H 2 at the measurement time of 100 s, corresponding to the noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 7 × 10 −10 cm −1 . The proposed cavity-enhanced photoacoustic DCS may open new avenues for ultrasensitive, high-resolution, and multi-species gas detection with widespread applications.

Abstract:Optical fiber acoustic sensors with miniature size and high sensitivity are attractive to develop compact photoacoustic spectroscopy. Here, a compact photoacoustic gas sensor was demonstrated by utilizing a diaphragm-based fiber-optic Fabry-Perot cavity as both the acoustic sensor and the multipass cell. A nanoscale graphite film was used as the flexible diaphragm to increase the acoustic sensitivity of the Fabry-Perot cavity and the cavity inner surface was coated with highly-reflective Au film to form a multipass cell for amplification of the photoacoustic signal. With a laser power of 20 mW at 1532.8 nm, the sensor demonstrated a low detection limit of ∼ 50 ppb for C 2 H 2 gas with an integration time of ∼ 100 s. The optical fiber photoacoustic gas sensor with a millimeter-scale diameter and ppb-level detection limit is promising for trace gas sensing in various areas including industrial process and environmental monitoring.

Abstract:A microfiber Fabry-Perot (FP) interferometer is proposed for photoacoustic sensing. It is fabricated by utilizing the 193 nm UV exposure and the phase mask technique. Two fiber Bragg gratings which are formed in a microscaled optical fiber as a FP cavity serves as a sensor. In contrast to the conventional, new characteristics are attributed to the microfiber segment of the refractive index change. The microfiber FP interferometric photoacoustic sensor dependencies on acoustic pressure, temperature, and refractive index are investigated. This compact photoacoustic sensor, with the diameter of microns, is suitable for photoacoustic imaging, especially in photo acoustic microtomography.
An Acoustic Sensor Based on Active Fiber Fabry-Pérot Microcavities

Abstract:We demonstrate an active acoustic sensor based on a high-finesse fiber Fabry-Pérot micro-cavity with a gain medium. The sensor is a compacted device lasing around 1535 nm by external optical pumping. The acoustic pressure acting on the sensor disturbs the emitted laser frequency, which is subsequently transformed to beat signals through a delay-arm interferometer, and directly detected by a photo-detector. In this configuration, the sensing device exhibits a high sensitivity of 2.6 V/Pa and a noise equivalent acoustic signal level of 230 μPa/Hz1/2 at a frequency of 4 kHz. Experimental results provide a wide frequency response from 100 Hz to 18 kHz. As the sensor works at communication wavelength and the output laser can be electrically tuned in the 10 nm range, a multi-sensor network can be easily constructed with the dense wavelength division multiplexing devices. Extra lasers or demodulators are unnecessary thus the proposed sensor is low cost and easy fabrication. The proposed sensor shows broad applications prospect in remote oil and gas leakage exploration, photo-acoustic spectrum detection, and sound source location.

Abstract:We demonstrate an ultrasensitive photoacoustic sensor using a low laser power (4 mW) and high-finesse (>9000) optical cavity. The Pound-Drever-Hall (PDH) method is adopted to lock the external cavity diode laser at 1531.58 nm to the Fabry-Pérot cavity. By placing a photoacoustic cell inside the 130-mm-long optical cavity, we obtain an enhancement of more than 630 times in laser power for acetylene (C2H2) detection. The present photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) sensor achieves a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 1.1×10-11 cm-1 WHz-1/2, which is unprecedented sensitivity among all the current PAS sensors. Our results demonstrate the feasibility of merging PAS with a high-finesse cavity using PDH locking for ultrasensitive trace gas detection.

Abstract:In this work, a photoacoustic (PA) gas sensor with a microembedded acoustic resonator for gas leakage detection was demonstrated. The micro-embedded acoustic resonator was fabricated by putting a leaky hollow-core fiber (L-HCF) into a cylindrical buffer chamber. The L-HCF was utilized as the PA cavity and the light transmission media simultaneously. The optimal inner diameter of the L-HCF was 1.7 mm. The embedded acoustic resonator was experimentally proven to be equivalent to a T-type half-open acoustic resonator, but the structure became much more compact. The volume of the amount of gas in the cell was only similar to 0.3 mL, and the gas diffusion time to fill the sensor under room temperature (25 degrees C) and ambient pressure (101 kPa) was similar to 44 s. Trace acetylene (C2H2) in pure nitrogen (N-2) was chosen as the target gas, and the minimum detectable limit (MDL) reached 29 ppb when the lock-in integration time was 1 s. The normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient was calculated to be 3.0x10(-9) W center dot cm(-1) center dot Hz(-1/2). The micro-resonant PA gas sensor, with merits of compactness, lowgas consumption, and low cost, has the potential to be a remote gas sensing scheme in fields of environmental protection, industrial process monitoring, and so on. Abstract:A resonant photoacoustic detection system based on a low-power distributed feedback diode laser is developed. This sensor has been applied to the detection of acetylene (C2H2) using a specifically designed photoacoustic cell operating on its second longitudinal mode. The minimum detectable limit of about 10 parts-per-million volume (SNR=1) is achieved with an average laser power of 3.5mW at atmospheric pressure, and an integration time constant of 3ms; thus, the minimum detectable absorption coefficient normalised by power and bandwidth is 4.0×10−8Wcm−1/√Hz. The optimum operating pressure buffered with N2 is also investigated. The realisation of our system is described and experimental results are compared with different modulation techniques and other results reported in the literature. A number of issues arising from the conventional use of mechanical chopping of the beam can be effectively suppressed in wavelength modulation PA spectroscopy (WM-PAS) and second harmonic detection.

Abstract:Multi-modality imaging is significant for biomedical applications. We propose a dual-sensitive sensor to simultaneously detect optical and ultrasonic signals. Based upon the classical piezoelectric structure, we attach a photosensitive layer made of carbon nanotubes-polydimethylsiloxane (CNTs-PDMS) composite to the surface. The photosensitive layer absorbs light and converts it into ultrasound, while allowing acoustic energy to transmit through concurrently. After optimizing the ratio of PDMS to CNTs, we increase the sensor's light detection sensitivity and maintain the ultrasound detection sensitivity. Finally, the successful implementation in mouse ear optical attenuation-photoacoustic imaging demonstrates the dual-sensitive sensor's potential application in multi-modality imaging.
