Abstract:Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2, as the cathode materials for lithium-ion battery, were prepared from the precursors, Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 (OH) 2, which were synthesized by the controlled crystallization technology. The experiments of energy diffraction spectroscopy showed that the elements of Co and Ni were distributed uniformly in the active materials. Because the elements of Co and Ni have been distributed uniformly in the M layer of M(OH) 2 during the controlled crystallization process, the long-term calcining process was avoided, when the recomposing process of diffusion happened in the common solid solutions. The microphotographs of SEM indicated the change of microcosmic morphology. The results of XRD proved that the Li x Co 0.8 Ni 0.2 O 2 were single phase with α-NaFeO 2 layered structure, and have no other phases. The crystal lattices of a and c underwent a process from small to big and then to small, and c/a underwent a process from big to small and then to big.
Deflagration Synthesis of Nanocrystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 Cathode Material

Abstract:The homogenous precursor has been prepared using a mixed aqueous solution of Ni(NO3)2•6H2O, Co(NO3)2•6H2O, Mn(NO3)2 and LiNO3 as metal sources and citric acid as chelating agent and fuel. The nanocrystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 powder was rapidly synthesized by deflagrating the dried precursor in oxygen. The as-synthesized LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 powder has a rhombohedral crystal system with an impurity phase of Li2MnO3. The mean crystallite size of as-synthesized powder was 40.89 nm. The annealed LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 powder was mainly consisted of particle agglomerates with the primary particles size of 100-300 nm. The high initial capacities of 208.0 mAh•g-1 (2.8-4.6 V) and 173.6 mAh•g-1 (2.8-4.3 V) were discharged at the rate of 0.05 C, respectively. Its capacity retentions were 89.3% and 93.4% within the voltage range of 2.8-4.6 V and 2.8-4.3 V at 0.1 C after 20 cycles, respectively. The results suggest that the deflagration synthesis holds potential to rapidly prepare nanocrystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material.

Abstract:A simple one-step molten salt method was used to synthesize micron-sized single primary particle LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 (NCM811) cathode material. XRD, SEM, cycle performance, rate capability, differential capacity curves, 0.1 C charge/discharge curves, and EIS were carried out to research the mechanism regarding the influence of Li/transition metal (Li/TM) ratio, sinter temperature, and sinter time on the morphology and electrochemical properties of micron-sized single primary particle LiNi0.8Co0.1Mn0.1O2 materials. Any one of these three factors increases exceeding certain limit and it will lead to the degradation of active structure evolution during the charge/discharge process, resulting in decreasing electrochemical performance of the cathode material. The micron-sized single primary particle NCM811 cathode material with little aggregation and primary particle size of ~ 1–2 μm was produced successfully under the condition of heating at 850 °C for 16 h with Li/TM = 1.15. This work will be helpful for the synthesis of micron-sized single primary particle NCM cathode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

Abstract:Submicron-sized LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode materials were synthesized using a simple self-propagating solid-state metathesis method with the help of ball milling and the following calcination. A mixture of Li(ac)·2H2O, Ni(ac)2·4H2O, Co(ac)2·4H2O, Mn(ac)2·4H2O (ac=acetate) and excess H2C2O4·2H2O was used as starting material without any solvent. XRD analyses indicate that the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials were formed with typical hexagonal structure. The FESEM images show that the primary particle size of the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials gradually increases from about 100nm at 700°C to 200–500nm at 950°C with increasing calcination temperature. Among the synthesized materials, the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 material calcined at 900°C exhibits excellent electrochemical performance. The steady discharge capacities of the material cycled at 1C (160mAg−1) rate are at about 140mAhg−1 after 100cycles in the voltage range 3–4.5V (versus Li+/Li) and the capacity retention is about 87% at the 350th cycle.

Abstract:A series of LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 samples with α-NaFeO2 structure were synthesized using tartaric acid as a chelating agent by wet chemical method. Different acid to metal-ion ratios R have been used to investigate the effect of this parameter on the physical and electrochemical properties. The cationic mixing (Ni on the 3a Li sites) have been evaluated by Rietveld refinement and magnetic measurements We determined that the LiNi1/3Mn1/3Co1/3O2 sintered at 900 {degree sign}C for 15 h with an acid to metal ion ratio R=2 was the optimum condition for this synthesis. For this optimized sample, only 1.26% of nickel-ions occupied the 3a Wyckoff site of the lithium-ion sublattice. This material delivered an initial discharge capacity of 172 mAh/g and displayed Coulomb efficiency of 94%.

Abstract:LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 was prepared from Li2CO3 and a triple oxide of nickel, cobalt and manganese at 950 degrees C in air. The structure and characteristics of LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 were determined by XRD, SEM and electrochemical measurements. The compound LiNi0.45CO0.10Mn0.45O2 has layered structure with hexagonal lattice. The individual particles are agglomeration of many little primary particles whose size ranges from 100 mm to 200 nm. The LiNi0.41CO0.10Mn0.45O2 cathode has excellent electrochemical performances with large reversible specific capacity of 142.5 mA(center dot)h/g between 4.25 V, and good capacity retention of 83.20% after 450 charge/discharge cycles. Capacity of the battery increases with enhancement of charge voltage limit, and a specific discharge capacity of 175.2 mA center dot h/g is obtained when the charge voltage limit is fixed at 4.45 V.

Abstract:Layered Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 cathode materials were synthesized via a solid-state reaction for Li-ion batteries, in which lithium hydroxide monohydrate, manganese dioxide, nickel monoxide, and cobalt monoxide were employed as metal precursors. To uncover the relationship between the structure and electrochemical properties of the materials, synthesis conditions such as calcination temperature and time as well as quenching methods were investigated. For the synthesized Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 materials, the metal components were found to be in the form of Mn4+, Ni2+, and Co3+, and their molar ratio was in good agreement with stoichiometric ratio of 0.56:0.16:0.08. Among them, the one synthesized at 800 degrees C for 12 h and subsequently quenched in air showed the best electrochemical performances, which had an initial discharge specific capacity and coulombic efficiency of 265.6 mAh/g and 84.0%, respectively, and when cycled at 0.5, 1, and 2 C, the corresponding discharge specific capacities were 237.3, 212.6, and 178.6 mAh/g, respectively. After recovered to 0.1 C rate, the discharge specific capacity became 259.5 mAh/g and the capacity loss was only 2.3% of the initial value at 0.1 C. This work suggests that the solid-state synthesis route is easy for preparing high performance Li[Li0.2Mn0.56Ni0.16Co0.08]O-2 cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Abstract:Nanocrystalline LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was synthesized by a sol-gel method. Thermal history of the gel was analyzed by thermogravimetric (TG) analysis and differential thermal analysis (DTA). Powders X-ray diffraction (XRD) proved the formation of layered alpha-NaFeO2 hexagonal lattice. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) showed that original particles were of the size range of 200-300 nm. The discharge capacity was 183 mAh/g in the first cycle with 87.5% capacity retention in 30 cycles at C/10 rate in 3.0-4.5 V potential range. Abstract:Cathode material Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O-2 for lithium-ion batteries with layered hexagonal structure was successfully synthesized in sol-gel way. The influences of calcination temperature (from 700 degrees to 1000 degrees C) on the structure and electrochemical behaviors of Li[Ni1/3Co1/3Mn1/3]O-2 were extensively investigated. The results of XRD show that all samples are isostructural with alpha-NaFeO2 with a space group R-3m. XPS analysis shows that the oxidation states of Co and Mn were Co3+ and Mn4+ respectively, while Ni exists as Ni2+ and Ni3+. The charge-discharge experiments show that the sample calcined at 850 degrees C delivers 194.8mAh/g in the first cycle at C/5 rate in 2.5-4.3V potential range.
Synthesis of cathode material LiNi_(1/3)Co_(1/3)Mn_(1/3)O_2 and its electrochemical performances

Abstract:The lithium-nickel-cobalt-manganese complex oxide LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 was firstly successfully prepared by rheolo- gical phase reaction method. The effect of Li/(Ni+Co+Mn) ratios, calcination temperature and calcination time on performances of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 were studied. Based on the optimized conditions, LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 cathode material was readily synthesized. The X-ray diffraction patterns show that the structure of precursor sintered beforehand is similar to that of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2.The SEM results reveal that the particle size of LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 is smaller than 1mm.The charge-discharge testing results demonstrate that the LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 compound has better electrochemical properties. The initial discharge specific capacity reached 146.30 mAh/g with a discharge current density of 0.20 mA/cm2 and the discharge specific capacity maintained 136.00 mAh/g after twenty cycles with the same discharge current density.

Abstract:The low-heating solid-state method has been adopted to synthesize LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 materials. The final product, with homogeneous phase and smooth crystals indicated by XRD and SEM results, can be synthesized at 700°C, much lower than the synthesis temperatures of co-precipitation method. The reaction process and microstructure of precursor has been investigated by IR spectrum. By comparative studies with the mixture of CH3COOLi and (Ni, Co, Mn)(C2O4), it is testified that the precursor is homogeneous, rather than a mixture. The decomposition process and the reaction energy have been studied to investigate the reaction mechanism of the precursor when heated at high temperature. The as-synthesized LiNi1/3Co1/3Mn1/3O2 exhibits excellent electrochemical properties, exhibiting initial specific capacity of 167mAhg−1 with stable cyclic performance.

Abstract:The cathode material LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 with excellent electrochemical performance was prepared successfully by a rheological phase method. The materials obtained were characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy and charge-discharge tests. The results showed that both calcination temperatures and atmosphere are very important factors affecting the structure and electrochemical performance of LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 material. The sample calcinated at 800 °C under O2 atmosphere displayed well-crystallized particle morphology, a highly ordered layered structure with low defects, and excellent electrochemical performance. In the voltage range of 2.8–4.3 V, it delivered capacity of 188.9 mAh g−1 at 0.2 C and 130.4 mAh g−1 at 5 C, respectively. The capacity retention also reached 93.9% after 50 cycles at 0.5 C. All the results suggest that LiNi2/3Co1/6Mn1/6O2 is a promising cathode material for lithium-ion batteries.
Synthesis and Evaluation of Microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 Through Carbon Dioxides-assisted Co-precipitation Method for Lithium-ion Battery

Abstract:Lithium-rich layered electrode materials are of interest as a promising candidate of cathodes for lithium-ion batteries because of their excellent electrochemical properties. The electrochemical performance of these materials is mainly regulated by preparation conditions during synthesis and calcination process. Here, microspherical Li1.2Mn0.54Co0.13Ni0.13O2 (LMNCO) particles are synthesized through steady pH value control with carbon dioxides bubbling method in co-precipitation process using a simple reactor. SEM images present that CP-LMNCO sample prepared through the assistance of carbon dioxides has spherical particle morphology, while sample (TP-LMNCO) without carbon dioxides assistance shows large nanoparticles agglomeration. The CP-LMNCO electrode demonstrates superior electrochemical performance, which exhibits capacity retention of 97.76% after 100 cycles compared with only 81.94% for TP-LMNCO electrode at 1C (250mAg−1). Even at a higher current density (5C), the CP-LMNCO electrode shows reversible capacity up to 105.4mA h g−1. The remarkably improved electrochemical performance of CP-LMNCO electrode is ascribed to spherical morphology with small surface area which decreases side reactions with electrolyte during cycling and smaller primary sizes which reduce lithium ion (Li+) diffusion distance. Furthermore, the synthesis of spherical materials using metal sulfate with high concentration (up to 5M) as starting agents are attempted under carbon dioxides assisted conditions, and as-prepared materials also show improved performance.

Abstract:To reduce cost while maintaining the specific capacity of LiNi0.5Co0.2Mn0.3O2 (NCM523) cathode, we systematically explore the effect of Ni substitution for Co on the structure, electrochemical performance, and thermal stability of NCM523, LiNi0.55Co0.15Mn0.3O2 (NCM5.5:1.5:3), and LiNi0.6Co0.1Mn0.3O2 (NCM613) cathodes in this study. These materials were investigated by scanning electron microscopy, particle-size analysis, Rietveld refinement of X-ray diffraction, inductively coupled plasma-atomic emission spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, charge-discharge testing, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, the galvanostatic intermittent titration technique, and differential scanning calorimetry. The results indicate that a decrease in the Co content of NCM523 lead to an increase in the voltage platform and discharge capacity, which contributes to the improvement of the energy density. However, the initial efficiency, cycle performance, rate capability, and low-temperature performance was found to slightly decrease. This behavior can be attributed to the lower Co content yielding higher degrees of Li+/Ni2+ disordering, higher resistance, lower Li+ diffusivity, and higher activation energy (Ea). Moreover, as the Co content decreased, the thermal stability of NCM523 was slightly decreased. Considering both cost and performance, NCM5.5:1.5:3 and NCM613 materials deserve to be considered as the preferred next-generation materials.
