Abstract:High interfacial resistance of an electrode/electrolyte interface is the most challenging barrier for the expanding application of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs). To address this challenge, poly(propylene carbonate)-based solid polymer electrolytes (PPC-SPEs) were introduced as interlayers combined with a Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)(3) (LAGP) solid state electrolyte (SSE), which successfully decreased the interfacial resistance of the SSE/electrolyte interface by suppressing the reduction reaction of Ge4+ against the Li metal, as well as producing intimate contact between the cathode and electrolyte. This work provides a systematic analysis of the interfacial resistance of the cathode/SSE, Li/SSE and the polymer/LAGP interfaces. As a consequence, the interfacial resistance of the Li/SSE interface decreased about 35%, and the interfacial resistance of the cathode/SSE interface decreased from 3.2 x 10(4) to 543 omega cm(2). With a PPC-LAGP-PPC sandwich structure composite electrolyte (PLSSCE), the all-solid-state LiFePO4/Li cell showed a high capacity of 148.1 mA h g(-1) at 0.1C and a great cycle performance over 90 cycles.

Abstract:Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) is a solid-state electrolyte with high ionic conductivity and air stability but poor chemical stability and high interfacial impedance when directly contacted with Li metal. In this work, we develop an inorganic/polymer hybrid interlayer composed of Li bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)imide/poly(vinylene carbonate) polymer electrolyte and SiO2 submicrospheres to stabilize the Li/LAGP interface. The polymeric component renders high ionic conductance and low interfacial resistance, whereas the inorganic component imparts flame retardancy and a physical barrier to the known Li-LAGP side reaction, together enabling stable Li stripping/plating for more than 1,500 h at room temperature. With this interlayer at both electrodes, all-solid-state Li∥LiFePO4 full cells with stable cycling performance are also demonstrated.

Abstract:The solid oxide electrolyte Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) with a NASICON structure has a high bulk ionic conductivity of 10-4 S cm-1 at room temperature and good stability in the air because of the strong P5+-O2- covalence bonding. However, the Ge4+ ions in LAGP are quickly reduced to Ge3+ on contact with the metallic lithium anode, and the LAGP ceramic has insufficient physical contact with the electrodes in all-solid-state batteries, which limits the large-scale application of the LAGP electrolyte in all-solid-state Li-metal batteries. Here, we prepared flexible PEO/LiTFSI/LAGP composite electrolytes, and the introduction of LAGP as a ceramic filler in polymer electrolytes increases the total ionic conductivity and the electrochemical stability of the composite electrolyte. Moreover, the flexible polymer shows good contact with the electrodes, resulting in a small interfacial resistance and stable cycling of all-solid-state Li-metal batteries. The influence of the external pressure and temperature on Li+ transfer across the Li/electrolyte interface is also investigated.

Abstract:Ceramic electrolyte guarantees the commercial application of all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) for its high ionic conductivity and wide voltage window. However, the large interfacial impedance between the ceramic and polymeric electrolyte is still tough issue for all-solid-state batteries. Here, a "self-sacrifice" interface established by a flexible Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP)/30% poly(propylene carbonate) (PPC) solid composite electrolyte causes a performance enhancement of the LiFePO4/Li battery with a discharge specific capacity of 151 mA h g-1 at 0.05 C and a retention of 92.3% for 100 cycles at 55 °C without any liquid electrolyte, where the PPC-derived layer swells the Li metal and infiltrates to develop the amorphous state to reduce both interfacial and bulk resistance; while the LAGP with good mechanical strength and the LiF layer provides stability and resists the growth of Li dendrites, which guaranteed the long cycle life and security of batteries. This study demonstrates the complementary advantages of ceramic and polymer, which implies a feasible way to achieve a well-wetted, soft, and stable contact of the electrolyte and electrode to overcome the interface issues in ASSLBs.
Improving the Stability of Lithium Aluminum Germanium Phosphate with Lithium Metal by Interface Engineering

Abstract:Lithium aluminum germanium phosphate (LAGP) solid electrolyte is receiving increasing attention due to its high ionic conductivity and low air sensitivity. However, the poor interface compatibility between lithium (Li) metal and LAGP remains the main challenge in developing all-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLB) with a long cycle life. Herein, this work introduces a thin aluminum oxide (Al2O3) film on the surface of the LAGP pellet as a physical barrier to Li/LAGP interface by the atomic layer deposition technique. It is found that this layer induces the formation of stable solid electrolyte interphase, which significantly improves the structural and electrochemical stability of LAGP toward metallic Li. As a result, the optimized symmetrical cell exhibits a long lifetime of 360 h with an areal capacity of 0.2 mAh cm-2 and a current density of 0.2 mA cm-2. This strategy provides new insights into the stabilization of the solid electrolyte/Li interface to boost the development of ASSLB.

Abstract:The interfacial compatibility between inorganic powder and polymeric matrix is one of the most important key factors for the applications of polymer ceramic composite electrolytes (PCCEs). In the present study, a surface modification strategy has been proposed by using three different terminating groups of silane coupling agents in the modification of the interfacial compatibility between LLZO and PEO in PEO/LLZO composite electrolyte. Experiments and density functional theory (DFT) calculations have been performed in studying the effect of different silane coupling agents on interfacial properties . Especially, the interface compatibility is found to be improved when using amino-terminated silane coupling agent KH550, which is due to hydrogen bond interactions between amino groups and PEO. In addition, the mechanical strength and conductivity are significantly increased by increasing the interaction energy and by decreasing the crystallinity, and the values of 1.39 MPa and 0.22 mS cm −1 at 30 °C are then successfully achieved. As a result, the solid-state LiFePO 4 |PCCE|Li battery demonstrates a high discharge specific capacity of 157 mAh g −1 at 60 °C and 1C. And it has a cycle capacity decay rate of only 0.034 % for 380 cycles. These results pave the way for future developments of high-performance PCCEs.

Abstract:All solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) with a high energy density are challenging, yet desired by the rising energy demands. Its intrinsic safety of solid-state electrolytes (SSEs) compared to flammable liquid electrolytes makes ASSLBs a modern-day necessity. NASICON-type Li 1.5 Al 0.5 Ge 1.5 P 3 O 12 (LAGP) has high ionic conductivity, high stability against air and water, and a wide electrochemical window. However, the application of LAGP is significantly hindered by its slow interfacial kinetics and brittle nature. In addition, the ionic conductivity of LAGP is relatively low at room temperature compared to that obtained at elevated temperatures. In our study, LAGP was incorporated into a polymer matrix to accelerate charge transport at the electrode-electrolyte interface to form LAGP-poly-DOL (LAGP-pDOL) hybrid electrolyte. The in-situ cationic ring-opening polymerization of DOL decreases the interfacial contact impedance and improves the mechanical properties of the SSE. LAGP-pDOL electrolyte exhibits prolonged cycle stability in symmetric cells (> 200 h) and in Li|LiFePO 4 full cells (99% retention after 50 cycles) at room temperature. This study demonstrates the effective utilization of conductive polymer matrix into LAGP to enhance mechanical strength, interfacial contact, and room temperature electrochemical performance.

Abstract:High interface impedance, slow ion transmission, and easy growth of lithium dendrites in solid-state lithium battery are main obstacles to its development and application. Good interface combination and compatibility between electrolyte and electrodes is an important way to solve these problems. In this work, we successfully combined a high ionic conductive polymerized 1,3-dioxolane (PDOL) solid-state electrolyte and a PDOL gel-state electrolyte to form a rigid-flexible composite structural electrolyte and realized the gelation modification of solid electrolyte/electrode interface. This "PDOL SE+PDOL Gel" composite structure not only improves the electrode/electrolyte interfacial contact, reduces the interfacial impedance, but also inhibits the growth of lithium dendrites in the interface between lithium anode and electrolyte by forming an uniform Li-Zr-O and LiF composite protection layer. This composite electrolyte has high ionic conductivity of 5.96×10-4 S/cm and wide electrochemical stability window of 5.0 V. The Li/PDOL SE+PDOL Gel/Li cells can be cycled stably for nearly 400 hours at a current density of 1.0 mA/cm2. The assembled LiCoO2/PDOL SE+PDOL Gel/Li cells can be cycled for 250 cycles at 0.5 C with a capacity retention of 80%. This PDOL solid/gel composite electrolyte shows high promising commercial application prospect due to its high security performance, excellent interfacial properties and dendrite inhibition ability.

Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based polymer electrolytes (PEs) with good electrochemical performance and processability as well as low-cost advantage, have great potential applications in solid-state lithium (Li) metal batteries (SSLMBs). PVDF-based PEs are generally produced by employing a solutioncasting approach with N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) as the solvent, accompanied by the formation of [DMF-Li+] complex, which facilitates the Li-ion transport. However, the residual DMF can react continuously with lithium (Li) metal, thereby deteriorating the interface layer in the middle of the PVDF-based PEs and Li anodes. Herein, we introduce propylene carbonate (PC) into the PVDF-based PEs to regulate the solvation structure and stabilize the interface layer between the PEs and Li anodes. PC accelerates the dissociation of lithium oxalyldifluoroborate (LiODFB). Consequently, "lithium propylene dicarbonate (LPDC)-B-O00 oligomer forms as the interfacial layer with high tenacity, homogeneity, and densification, which improves the interfacial contact and suppresses the continuous reaction between the residual DMF and Li anode. We further demonstrate that the PVDF-based PE prepared with DMF-PC mix-solvents shows improved room-temperature ionic conductivity (1.18 x 10-3 S/cm), enhanced stability against electrodes, and superior cycling performance in LiCoO2-based SSLMBs (maintaining 84 % of the initial discharge capacity after 300 cycles). Achieving Higher Critical Current Density in LGPS-Based Lithium Metal Batteries via a Synergistic Interlayer for Physical Inhibition and Chemical Scavenging of Lithium Dendrites

Abstract:Li10.35Ge1.35P1.65S12 (LGPS) electrolyte has garnered attention due to its high ionic conductivity and processability. However, its strong incompatibility with lithium metal hinders its practical application. Conventional interlayer strategy isolates Li from LGPS, avoiding the detrimental side reactions, but lithium dendrite penetration is still a problem. To address the aforementioned challenges, we develop a PVDF-HFP-supported PDOL-based interlayer (PDOL/PVDF-HFP), which stabilizes the LGPS/Li interface by synergistically physically inhibiting and chemically scavenging lithium dendrites. The multifunctional feature of the interlayer comes from the use of a bifunctional initiator, InCl3. On the one hand, InCl3 induces the polymerization of DOL, forming a physical separator and protecting lithium from LGPS; on the other hand, in situ reactions between In3+/Cl- and Li form a LiCl/LiF/LiIn hybrid SEI, homogenizing the surface Li+ flux and suppressing lithium dendrite formation and penetration. In addition, an unexpected dynamic microdendrite scavenging is realized by virtue of the side reactions of LGPS/Li, which converts the undesirable reaction to be an advantage in our design. Benefiting from the comprehensive advantages of such design, the constructed sulfide-based solid-state batteries achieve a super low interfacial impedance of 5.1 Ω, a high critical current density (CCD) value over 5 mA/cm2, and a super long cycling stability over 8000 h. Our synergistic interlayer strategy would open an effective avenue for solving interfacial challenges for practical sulfide-based solid-state batteries.

Abstract:A composite ion‐conducting protective layer of MoS2/solid polymer is designed onto Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP), improving its poor Li/LATP interfacial contact and slow Li‐ion migration issues, which obtains excellent electrochemical performance. This study emphasizes the importance of promoting ion migration and adsorption in improving the interface, confirmed by density functional theory calculations and a series of experimental characterizations. Li1.3Al0.3Ti1.7(PO4)3 (LATP) is one of the most attractive solid‐state electrolytes (SSEs) for application in all‐solid‐state lithium batteries (ASSLBs) due to its advantages of high ionic conductivity, air stability and low cost. However, the poor interfacial contact and slow Li‐ion migration have greatly limited its practical application. Herein, a composite ion‐conducting layer is designed at the Li/LATP interface, which a MoS2 film is constructed on LATP via chemical vapor deposition, followed by the introduction of a solid polymer (SP) liquid precursor to form a MoS2@SP protective layer. This protective layer not only achieves a lower Li‐ion migration energy barrier, but also adsorbs more Li‐ion, which is able to promote interfacial ion transport and improve interfacial contacts. Thanks to the improved migration and adsorption of Li‐ion, the Li symmetric cell containing LATP‐MoS2@SP exhibits a stable cycle of more than 1200 h at 0.1 mA cm−2. More remarkably, the capacity retention of the full cell assembled with LiFePO4 cathode is as high as 86.2% after 400 cycles at 1 C. This work provides a design strategy for significantly improving unstable interfaces of SSEs and realizing high‐performance ASSLBs.

Surface modification of garnet fillers with polymeric sacrificial agent enables compatible interfaces of composite solid-state electrolytes

Abstract:The poly (vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)-based composite solid-state electrolyte (CSE) has garnered attention due to its excellent comprehensive performance. However, challenges persist in the structural design and preparation process of the ceramic-filled CSE, as the PVDF-based matrix is susceptible to alkaline conditions and dehydrofluorination, leading to its incompatibility with ceramic fillers and hindering the preparation of solid-state electrolytes. In this study, the mechanism of dehydrofluorination failure of PVDF-based polymer in the presence of Li2CO3 on the surface of Li6.4La3Zr1.4Ta0.6O12 (LLZTO) is analyzed, and an effective strategy is proposed to inhibit the dehydrofluorination failure on the basis of density functional theory (DFT). We introduce a molecule with a small LUMO-HOMO gap as a sacrificial agent, which is able to remove the Li2CO3 impurities. Therefore, the approach of polyacrylic acid (PAA) as a sacrificial agent reduces the degree of dehydrofluorination in the PVDF-based polymer and ensures slurry fluidity, promoting the homogeneous distribution of ceramic fillers in the electrolyte membrane and enhancing compatibility with the polymer. Consequently, the prepared electrolyte membranes exhibit good electrochemical and mechanical properties. The assembled Li-symmetric cell can cycle at 0.1 mA/cm2 for 3500 h. The LiFePO4||Li cell maintains 91.45% of its initial capacity after 650 cycles at 1C, and the LiCoO2||Li cell maintains 84.9% of its initial capacity after 160 cycles, demonstrating promising high-voltage performance. This facile modification strategy can effectively improve compatibility issues between polymer and fillers, which paves the way for the mass production of solid-state electrolytes.

Stabilize Garnet/Electrode Interface via Low-melting Polymer Layer in Solid-state Lithium Metal Battery

Abstract:All-solid-state lithium batteries (ASSLB) possess great potentials in constructing safer yet higher energy-density lithium batteries to substitute for current liquid lithium-ion battery, but the poor solid-solid contact at the electrode|electrolyte exerts an ultra-high interfacial resistance to the battery system which often leads to a working failure at moderate room temperature. To overcome this lithium mitigation barrier at solid interfaces to enable ASSLB working at room temperature range, a brand-new lithium salt (lithium bis(trifluoromethane sulfonimide))-polymer (polytetrahydrofuran) composite buffer layer (PPEI) was introduced to facilitate lithium ion pass between garnet-type Li 6.4 La 3 Zr 1.4 Ta 0.6 O 12 (LLZTO) solid electrolyte(SE) and anode or cathode electrodes. The PPEI layer owns a unique glassy transition temperature near 36.7 °C which enables room temperature lithium conduction up to ∼10 −5 S/cm. Moreover, with simple solvent-free casting method, PPEI displayed well improved contact with lithium, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) cathode and LLZTO solid electrolyte and expanded electrochemical window up to 5.3 V vs Li + /Li. Bearing these advantages, the impedance of the assembled solid-state Li|PPEI|LLZTO|PPEI|LFP cell was decreased by more than one order of magnitude. And it can be successfully operated at 25 °C for more than 130 cycles, with a capacity retention surpassing 98 %.

Abstract:Perovskite La2/3xLi3xTiO3 (LLTO) materials are promising solid-state electrolytes for lithium metal batteries (LMBs) due to their intrinsic fire-resistance, high bulk ionic conductivity, and wide electrochemical window. However, their commercialization is hampered by high interfacial resistance, dendrite formation, and instability against Li metal. To address these challenges, we first prepared highly dense LLTO pellets with enhanced microstructure and high bulk ionic conductivity of 2.1 × 10 - 4 S cm-1 at room temperature. Then, the LLTO pellets were coated with three polymer-based interfacial layers, including pure (polyethylene oxide) (PEO), dry polymer electrolyte of PEO-LITFSI (lithium bis (trifluoromethanesulfonyl) imide) (PL), and gel PEO-LiTFSI-SN (succinonitrile) (PLS). It is found that each layer has impacted the interface differently; the soft PLS gel layer significantly reduced the total resistance of LLTO to a low value of 84.88 Ω cm-2. Interestingly, PLS layer has shown excellent ionic conductivity but performs inferior in symmetric Li cells. On the other hand, the PL layer significantly reduces lithium nucleation overpotential and shows a stable voltage profile after 20 cycles without any sign of Li dendrite formation. This work demonstrates that LLTO electrolytes with denser microstructure could reduce the interfacial resistance and when combined with polymeric interfaces show improved chemical stability against Li metal.
First‐Principles Study on Polymer Electrolyte Interface Engineering for Lithium Metal Anodes

Abstract:Modifying the interface between the lithium metal anode (LMA) and the electrolyte is crucial for achieving high‐performance lithium metal batteries (LMBs). Recent research indicates that altering Li‐metal interfaces with polymer coatings is an effective approach to extend LMBs' cycling lifespan. However, the physical properties of these polymer‐Li interfaces have not yet been fully investigated. Therefore, the structural stability, electronic conductivity, and ionic conductivity of polymer‐Li interfaces were examined based on first‐principles calculations in this study. Several representative polymer compounds utilized in LMBs were assessed, including polyacrylonitrile (PAN), polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF), polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE), and polyethylene oxide (PEO). Our research revealed that lithium fluoride is formed upon fluoropolymer degradation, explaining previously observed experimental results. Polymers containing nitrile groups exhibit strong adhesion to lithium metal, facilitating the formation of the stable interface layer. Regarding electronic conductivity, the fluoropolymers preserve a good insulating property, which diminished marginally in the presence of lithium, but that of PAN and PEO significantly reduces. Additionally, lithium diffusion on PTFE and PEO demonstrates low diffusion barriers and high coefficients, enabling easy transportation. Overall, our investigation reveals that the interfaces formed between various polymers and LMA have distinct characteristics, providing new fundamental insights for designing composites with tailored interface properties.

Boosting lithium-ion transport capability of LAGP/PPO composite solid electrolyte via component regulation from ‘Ceramics-in-Polymer’ to ‘Polymer-in-Ceramics'

Abstract:The design and regulation of the ion transport channels in the polymer electrolyte is an important means to improve the lithium ion transport behavior of the electrolyte. In this work, we for the first time combined the high ionic conductive inorganic ceramic electrolyte Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) with flexible polypropylene oxide (PPO) polymer electrolyte to synthesize a high-filling LAGP/PPO composite solid electrolyte film and regulated the ion transport channels from ‘Ceramics-in-Polymer’ mode to ‘Polymer-in-Ceramics' mode by optimizing the ratio of LAGP vs. PPO. The results reveal that when the LAGP content <40%, the electrolyte belongs to ‘LAGP-in-PPO’, and then changes to ‘PPO-in-LAGP’ when the LAGP content exceeds 40%. Compared with ‘LAGP-in-PPO’, the ‘PPO-in-LAGP’ shows better comprehensive properties, especially for the 75% LAGP-filled PPO electrolyte, the room-temperature ionic conductivity is as high as 3.46 × 10−4 Scm−1, the ion migration number and voltage stable window reach 0.83 and 4.78 V respectively. This high-filled composite electrolyte possesses high tensile stress of 40 MPa with a strain of 46% and withstands working environment up to 200 °C. The NCM622/Li solid-state battery composed of this electrolyte also presents good rate and cycle performances with a capacity retention of 80% after 230 cycles at 0.3C because of its high ion transport capability and good inhibition of lithium dendrites. This composite structural design is expected to develop high-performance solid-state electrolytes suitable for high-voltage solid-state lithium batteries.

Abstract:Recently, poor security in conventional liquid electrolytes and high interfacial resistance at the electrode/electrolyte interface are the most challenging barriers for the expanded application of lithium batteries. In this regard, easy processing and flexible composite ionic liquid gel polymer electrolytes (ILGPEs) supported by Li1.5Al0.5Ge1.5(PO4)3 (LAGP) are fabricated and investigated. The electrolyte is effectively combined with good electrochemical performances and thermal safety. Among these, the effects of different types of fillers such as the inert filler-SiO2 and the active filler-LAGP on the ionic conductivity were studied in detail. LAGP particles can not only effectively reduce the crystallinity of the polymer matrix but also provide lithium ions and act as the lithium-ion conductor leading to higher ionic conductivity and Li+ ion transference number.
