Abstract:The potential of iron nitride alloys as nanocrystalline materials for soft magnetic ribbons was explored. Nanocrystalline Fe83.4N8.4B7.3Cu0.9 soft magnetic ribbons with a principal constituent of α′′-Fe16N2 are formed after the nitriding and tempering of amorphous Fe91B8Cu1 ribbons. The formation mechanism of α′′-Fe16N2 is the transformation of austensite by its quenching to α′-Fe (N) martensite and subsequent tempering to α′′-Fe16N2. The good soft magnetic properties show that Fe nitride alloys are good candidate materials for nanocrystalline soft magnetic ribbons.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons of the alloy Fe63.5Co10Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3 were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in air and their crystallization kinetics was analyzed by non-isothermal differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) measurements. The crystallization activation energies (Ex, Ea1 and Ea2) of amorphous ribbons calculated from Kissinger model were 448, 385 and 396kJ/mol for the first and the second crystallizations, respectively. The Avrami exponent n was calculated from the Johnson–Mehl–Avrami (JMA) equation and was used to identify the crystallization mechanism for the amorphous ribbons. The ribbons were milled into different sized flakes, which were molded subsequently to cores using 3wt.% epoxy as a binder. The effective permeability of the cores showed high frequency stability and increased with the size of the flakes. For the cores made from small sized flakes (−75μm), the quality factor was increased at high frequencies, which was attributed to the reduction in the eddy current loss.

Abstract:A nanostructure with α″-Fe16N2 nanocrystallites embedded in an amorphous matrix was prepared by annealing Fe92B8 amorphous alloy in a NH3+H2 gas mixture stream with subsequent quenching and annealing. The average grain size and the volume fraction of the α″-Fe16N2 phase are found to be 18nm and 54%, respectively. The prepared sample exhibits a saturation magnetization of 2.35T, a coercive force of 11.4A/m, an initial permeability of 9.1×104 and a relaxation frequency of 4.1×104Hz.

Abstract:Amorphous ribbons Fe73.5-xCoxSi13.5B9Cu1Nb3(x=10,30,50) were prepared by the standard single copper wheel melt spinning technique in the air atmosphere.The isothermal annealing was carried out at 550 and 600℃ for 1h in a vacuum furnace to induce the formation of nanocrystallite in amorphous ribbons.The X-ray diffraction(XRD) analyses showed that the average sizes D of α-Fe(Co,Si) grains for the samples annealed at 550℃ were 19.3,20.1,22.8 nm and those for the samples annealed at 600℃ were 24.8,25.2,26.5nm,respectively.The primary crystallization activation energies of amorphous ribbons were calculated using Kissinger,Ozawa and Augis-Bennett models based on differential thermal analysis data.The local Avrami exponenet n for primary crystallization was calculated using Johnson-Mehl-Avrami(JMA) equation.The significant variation of local Avrami exponent n with crystallized volume fraction α demonstrated that the primary crystallization kinetics of amorphous ribbons varied at different stages.In the initial stage(0α0.2),the crystallization mechanism was bulk crystallization with three dimensional nucleation and grain growth controlled by diffusion at decreasing nucleation rate.In the following stage(0.2α1.0),it was surface crystallization with one dimensional nucleation and grain growth at a near-zero nucleation rate.

It is found that the effective permeability of the cores shows high frequency stability and decreases with the increase of milling times. The quality factor increases with increasing frequency in lower frequency range, and reaches a maximum at the frequency of 80 kHz then decreases gradually with increasing frequency.

Abstract:Nano-ribbons of (Fe,Ni)3(P,B) intermetallic compound have been prepared by a so-called selective etching method from the precursor Fe40Ni40P14B6 alloys. These precursors, with a eutectic structure constituting of (Fe,Ni)3(P,B) phase and γ-(Fe,Ni) phase, were prepared in a rod shape by the rapid quenching method. Then, the γ-(Fe,Ni) phase was dissolved off from the eutectic structure through selective etching with aqua regia, resulting in nano-ribbons, with about 10–50nm thickness, 300–1000nm width and about 10μm or more length, having been obtained under the action of etching and polishing effects. Based on the experimental results, the possible evolution process of (Fe,Ni)3(P,B) nano-ribbons from eutectic structures was proposed. The present result shows that the selective etching method is an easy and effective approach for preparing metallic nano-ribbons.

Abstract:An approach by using the γ′-Fe4N precursor was proposed to prepare a bulk magnet with high α″-Fe16N2 content, and the feasibility for high N content α′-Fe(N)/α′-Fe8N was demonstrated in ribbon samples. γ′-Fe4N decomposed when it was heated to a high temperature, and then, a supersaturated γ-Fe(N) phase formed because of N atoms diffusing out from the γ′-Fe4N lattice. The short-lived supersaturated γ-Fe(N) had the face-centered cubic lattice, and its nitrogen content is beyond 3.0 wt. %. The supersaturated γ-Fe(N) acts as a precursor of the martensite transformation for a body-centered tetragonal phase. After the cryo-treatment, which was essential to complete the martensite transformation, a mixture of α′-Fe(N) and α′-Fe8N was obtained. The N content of more than 2.5 wt. % in the samples was achieved.

Abstract:Using the methods of advanced physical materials science, the structural-phase states and properties of an ~80 μm-thick ribbon, made from a FeCoNiSiB high-entropy alloy of a non-equiatomic composition by ultrarapid quenching from melt, are studied. After the melt spinning the ribbon is in an X-ray amorphous state and demonstrates high strength and low plasticity. Anisotropy of its tribological properties is revealed. A differential scanning calorimetry of the ribbon is performed and its magnetic properties are evaluated.

Abstract:Melt spinning method has been widely applied for fabrication of Fe-based amorphous/nanocrystalline ribbons in industry. Compared with Fe-based amorphous/nanocrystalline alloys, Fe-6.5wt%Si high silicon steel is of low cost and has comparable excellent soft magnetic properties. Due to higher melting point and absence of supercooled liquid region, fabrication of Fe-6.5wt%Si ribbons is very hard and is only on lab scale. In this paper, we report that large scale fabrication of Fe-6.5wt%Si ribbons was successful and microstructures, ordered structures, and mechanical and soft magnetic properties of the ribbons were investigated. Due to rapid solidification rate, the ribbons were of ultrafine grains, and low degree of order and exhibited some extent of bending and tensile ductility. After heat treatment, excellent soft magnetic properties were obtained. Due to near-zero magnetostriction, the ribbons are promising to be used in electric devices with high frequencies where low noises are required.

Abstract:Sm 2 Fe 15.5 Si 1.5 C 1.5 samples with a rhombohedral Th2Zn17-type structure have been prepared by high frequency induction melting. The crystallization, crystal structure, and magnetic properties of melt-spun and annealed ribbons have been studied by means of x-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, differential thermal analysis, and magnetic measurements. The results show that the as-spun ribbons consist mainly of an amorphous phase, and that they crystallize in two steps. Upon annealing at 660 °C the ribbons form a metastable phase of the TbCu7-type and an α-Fe phase. Upon further annealing above 750 °C the metastable phase transforms to a 2:17-type phase coexisting with α-Fe. A saturation magnetization of up to 108 emu/g with a coercivity of up to 3.5 kOe is obtained in the ribbon annealed at 660 °C for 30 min. However, the reduced remanence of the ribbon σr/σs is only 0.6 and its hysteresis loop exhibits two independent magnetic components. Additionally, the grain size of the ribbons obtained by annealing at or above 660 °C for 30 min is much larger than the single domain size. Thus, it appears that there is no significant exchange coupling between the hard and soft magnetic phases of the ribbons.

Abstract:Abstract. Rapidly quenched ribbons of Fe63.5Co10Si13.5B9Cu1Nb3alloy were annealed at 550°C in a vacuum for 1h and milled to powders. Cold-pressed nanocrystalline powder cores were fabricated using 1-5wt.% of epoxy E-44 as the binder and 1wt.% of Zn-stearate for lubrication under the pressure 155-200KN. The microstructure and morphology of powders were characterized with XRD and SEM. The effective permeability (μe) and quality factor (Q) were tested by using LCR HiTESTER 3532-50 in the range of 1–5000 kHz. The results show that the μe of the powder cores increased with the particle size. Powder cores with 2wt.% binder exhibited higher μe, but lower Q compared with samples with 3wt.% binder. Increase of the forming pressure helps improve μe, but the excessive stress caused by the forming pressure had a negative effect for μe.
A Feasible Strategy for Fabricating Surface Porous Network in Fe-Si Ribbons

Abstract:Porous materials have always attracted extensive attention owing to their low density, tunable porosity and high surface area. Generally, porosity is introduced in amorphous materials through dealloying or electrochemical dealloying processes. In this work, an iron-based surface porous network was successfully fabricated utilizing selective electrochemical dissolution of Fe-Si alloy ribbons based on the cellular structure prepared by melt-spinning technique. After 30 s, the surface of the ribbon gradually becomes flat and grains can be observed in the first stage of electrochemistry; after an extra 10 s, the pores spread throughout the surface of the ribbon in the second stage. The average size of pores is about 310 nm and the average size of the ligament is 150 nm. The associated dissolution mechanism has been proposed based on the inhomogeneous composition of the center and edge of the cell. The entire process of electrochemical dissolution has been divided into two stages and the entire duration of synthesis does not exceed one minute. This method is extremely feasible and provides a promising strategy for preparing surface porous materials for selective electrochemical dissolution of cellular structure.
Synthesis and microstructures of α-Fe 2O 3 bierystalline nanowires

Abstract:Novel Fe 2O 3 nanowires have been successfully synthesized by a simple oxidation process of pure iron. The microstructure of the Fe 2O 3 nanowires have been systematically investigated by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The investigated materials are found to be stoichiometric rhombohedral α-Fe 2O 3 with typical diameters of 20-80 nm and lengths up to 20 μm. In addition to known single crystal Fe 2O 3 nanowires, a great amount of novel bicrystalline nanowires were found with ellipsoidal heads. Investigations indicate that most of the bicrystalline nanowires are twins and their orientation relationship is obtained tobe (-1, 1, 10) M//(-1, 1, 10) T, M// T. High resolution TEM with numerical reconstruction of the electron exit wave was used to investigated the atomic structure of the micro-twins. Their growth mechanism is briefly discussed on the basis of solid phase growth process. © 2005 Materials Research Society.

Abstract:The microstructures of melt-spun Al-2.03 Fe-0.46 Ti-0.35 C (at %) superheated to 1523 K (ribbon I), and 1673 K (ribbon II), respectively, before quenching, have been characterized using analytical electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. A duplex microstructure has been observed for ribbon I, consisting of a microcellular region, across a sharp transition, followed by a coarser cellular or dendritic structure. The intercellular phases consisted mostly of Al6Fe (few of Al3Fe) and the dispersed TiC particles distributed in the α-Al matrix with an exact orientation relationship. However, the microstructure of ribbon II comprised uniform, fine-scale dispersions of Al6Fe phase in α-Al grains, and larger size, elongated amorphous phase particles located along the grain boundaries, and approximately 0.46 at % Ti and 0.35 at % C dissolved in the α-Al matrix. During the annealing of ribbon II, the amorphous phase transformed to αT-AlFeSi phase, the Al6Fe dispersoids grew upwards and Al3Fe, TiC particles precipitated in the α-Al matrix. TiC phase formed both in ribbon I and in annealed ribbon II all had an atomic composition of TiC0.79 (the nominal atomic percent ratio for the alloy \(X_C /X_{T_{_j } } \) was 0.74) and a lattice parameter of 0.424 nm. Moreover, there is a cube-cube orientation relationship between TiC and α-Al matrix with a disregistry δ=0.049. In addition, the solidification characteristics of rapid solidification processing (RSP) Al-Fe-Ti-C alloy and mechanism of TiC formation have been discussed.
Texture of Nanocomposite Nd2Fe14B/α-Fe Melt Spun Ribbons

Abstract:Highly textured nanocomposite Nd9Fe84.5Nb0.5B6 ribbons were obtained by rapid solidification at wheel speeds from 15 to 20 m·s-1. X-ray diffraction (XRD) shows that these ribbons are preferentially orientated with the c axis of Nd2Fe14B phase perpendicular to the surface of the ribbons. The texture of Nd2Fe14B phase on the free surface is stronger than that on the contact surface and decreases with increase of wheel speed. The texture of Nd2Fe14B phase seems to be caused by the preferential growth of the crystal nuclei favorable orientation with their c axes along the temperature gradient during rapid solidification, which can be explained by a growth circular cone (GCC). The intensity of the anisotropy can be expressed by the magnitude of the cone generating angle. The supercooling velocity and wheel speed will influence the cone generating angle, which in turn influences the anisotropy. The remanence and maximum energy product in the direction perpendicular to the ribbon surface is much higher than that in the direction parallel with the ribbon surface. High remanence and maximum energy product can be obtained in the direction perpendicular to the ribbon surface. The texture of Nd2Fe14B phase decreases gradually after annealing above 600°C, which is mainly attributed to the precipitation of new α-Fe from Nd2Fe14B phase with super-saturated Fe. Decreasing the annealing temperature or reducing the annealing time is beneficial for preserving the anisotropy of Nd2Fe14B phase after annealing.

Abstract:Fast-quenched ribbons with thicknesses of 200, 50, 30, and 20 μm have been obtained by melt spinning at hardening disk rotation speeds of 500, 1500, 2500, and 3500 rpm, respectively. The chemical composition of the ribbons has been determined by atomic emission spectroscopy on a Spectroflame Modula S spectrometer. X-ray diffraction patterns of the ribbons have obtained on a DRON-6 diffractometer (Cu K α radiation) with a graphite monochromator. The effect of the melt cooling rate on the structural state of the contact and free sides of the Fe 77 Ni 1 Si 9 B 13 alloy ribbons has been examined. It has been established that, by increasing the melt cooling rate, one can obtain fast-quenched Fe 77 Ni 1 Si 9 B 13 alloy ribbons with different structures: X-ray amorphous at 3500, 2500, and 1500 rpm and crystalline at 500 rpm. Cooling of the melt at a quenching disk rotation speed of 500 rpm makes it possible to obtain Fe 77 Ni 1 Si 9 B 13 alloy ribbons with crystallographic structures of three types: A 2, C 16, and D 0 3 ( A 2 corresponds to the α-Fe(Si) phase; C 16, to the Fe 2 B phase; and D 0 3 , to the Fe 3 Si phase). In the surface layers on the ribbon free side, texturing of the Fe 3 Si phase has been detected. It is noted that the crystal structure of the ribbons obtained by melt cooling on a quenching disk at a rotation speed of 500 rpm differs from the structure of the ribbons of this alloy crystallized from the amorphous state by annealing.
