Abstract:The sulphur resistance and regeneration strategy of soot oxidation catalysts are critical to the application of catalytic diesel particulate filters (CDPFs). In the present work, Pt/MnOx-CeO2/Al2O3, Pt/Al2O3 and MnOx-CeO2/Al2O3 catalysts were sulphated and regenerated with ammonia. The soot oxidation activity of poisoned Pt/MnOx-CeO2/Al2O3 was recovered completely after 30 min reduction in 500 ppm NH3 at 550 degrees C. The amount, distribution and structure of sulphates were studied comprehensively for the sulphated and regenerated samples by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), infrared (IR) spectroscopy, CO chemisorption and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The NO oxidation of Pt catalysts was found to depend strongly on the particle size distribution, surface exposure and oxidation state of the precious metal. This, as well as the effect of the remaining surface sulphates, helped the regenerated catalysts achieve even higher catalytic activity for soot oxidation.

Abstract:This study presents the synthesis of a series of FeOx-NbOx mixed oxide catalysts for the selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO by NH3. By meticulously controlling the Fe/Nb molar ratio, we have rationally tailored the proceeding of the main reaction of NO reduction and the side reaction of NH3 oxidation to NOx. The incorporation of NbOx introduced a significant number of acid sites, which enhanced the adsorption of NH3 on the catalyst surface, particularly at elevated temperatures. Additionally, the oxidative capacity of the catalyst was moderated by the addition of NbOx, hindering the over-oxidation of NH3 to NO or NO2, thus preserving more NH3 to act as a reductant for NO reduction. Consequently, the NbOx-enriched samples exhibited improved deNO(x) performance. However, an excessive amount of NbOx led to a notably weakened oxidative ability, which negatively impacted the activation of reactants and resulted in decreased NO conversion at lower temperatures. The optimized catalyst presented >80 % NO conversion and >95 % N-2 selectivity within a temperature range of 250-400 degrees C. These findings offer valuable insights for the development of new catalysts with an extended operational temperature window.
Mnox/Ceo2/Sio2 Catalysts Prepared by Adsorption Phase Reaction Technique for Selective Catalytic Reduction of Nox at Low-Temperature

Abstract:MnOx/CeO2/SiO2 catalysts were prepared by the adsorption phase reaction technique and were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), and Raman spectroscopy. HRTEM showed that MnOx and CeO2 particles were uniformly coated on the surface of SiO2. The XRD spectra showed that the intensity of the Mn3O4 diffraction peaks gradually decreased and then completely disappeared with the increasment of the CeO2 content, which indicated that CeO2 reduced the crystallinity of MnOx and improved the dispersibility of MnOx. Raman spectroscopy indicated that Mn ions on the surface of catalysts could enter into the lattice of CeO2, replace oxygen ions, and form oxygen vacancies. With the increasment of CeO2 content, the density of oxygen vacancies initially increased and then decreased. We used the catalysts for selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NOx with NH3. The catalytic activity initially increased and then decreased with the increasment of CeO2 content, similar to the change in the density of oxygen vacancies. Thus, the catalytic activity of the MnOx/CeO2/SiO2 catalysts increases with increasing the density of oxygen vacancies.
Combined Promoting Effects of Platinum and MnOx–CeO2 Supported on Alumina on NOx-assisted Soot Oxidation: Thermal Stability and Sulfur Resistance

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides were introduced into Pt/Al2O3 catalyst to reduce the amount of platinum and improve the catalytic activity for soot oxidation in presence of NOx. The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), CO chemisorption, thermogravimetric (TG) analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), H2 temperature-programmed reduction (H2-TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (NO-TPO) and soot temperature-programmed oxidation (soot-TPO). Due to the superior redox property, the introduction of MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides effectively enhanced the catalytic activities of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst for NO oxidation and hereby for soot oxidation in NO+O2. The Pt/MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 catalyst also exhibited high activities after the thermal ageing and sulfur poisoning, which are related to the intrinsic characteristics of MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt as well as their synergistic effects. The deactivation mechanisms of different catalysts (Pt/Al2O3,MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3 and Pt/MnOx–CeO2/Al2O3) were discussed.

Abstract:MnOx-CeO2-Al2O3 mixed oxides were prepared by impregnating manganese and cerium precursors on alumina powders via a sol-gel deposition method. The oxide catalyst exhibited a poor resistance to sulfur dioxide after the treatment in 100 ppm SO2/air at 350°C for 50 h. The formation of manganese sulfate and especially cerium sulfate reduced the availability of surface active metal oxides, blocked the pore structure and decreased the surface area of the catalyst. These changes in chemical and structural and textural properties resulted in a severe loss in the activities of the sulfated catalyst for NO and soot oxidation. The decomposition of sulfates was almost complete during the calcination in air at 800°C for 30 min, which partially recovered the surface active sites and the catalyst surface area despite the significant sintering of metal oxides. Consequently, the NOx-assisted soot oxidation activity of the catalyst was regenerated to some extent by the oxidation treatment.

Abstract:The impact of SOx (x = 2, 3) on the activity of a model diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC: Pt/Al2O3) is examined for the oxidations of sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitric oxide (NO), and propylene (C3H6). Flow reactor studies conducted of the Pt/Al2O3 washcoated monolith before and after sulfation quantify the detrimental deactivation. Subsequent exposure of the poisoned catalyst to NH3 without and with O2 enables the assessment of its effectiveness as a regenerant. A combination of steady state reaction, temperature programmed desorption (TPD) and reaction (TPR), and diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS) are conducted to characterize the poisoning and regeneration processes. Mechanistic explanations are proposed consistent with DRIFTS-identified surface species. The findings suggest a potential mitigation strategy for restoring the activity of Pt/Al2O3 in diesel emission control. The effectiveness of the activation restoration strategy is in the order of NH3 oxidation > SO2 oxidation > C3H6 oxidation > NO oxidation.

Abstract:The sulfated Pt/Al2O3 catalyst was synthesized by impregnating H2SO4 on the Pt/Al2O3 catalyst. It exhibits higher catalytic activity than Pt/Al2O3 for soot oxidation under loose contact conditions in a feed flow containing NO and O-2. Further studies ascribe its good activity to a synergistic effect between sulfate species and platinum. Firstly, the electronegative sulfate species may improve the oxidation-resistance of metallic platinum in the oxidizing atmosphere, which is important for achieving high NO <-> NO2 <-> soot recycling efficiency; Secondly, the sulfate species inhibit the NOx adsorption on the alumina support, leading to a preferential adsorption of NOx on the surface of soot rather than on the catalyst, and thus provide more chances for NO2-soot reaction to generate the surface oxygenated complexes (SOCs); Finally, the sulfate species can promote the further decomposition of these SOCs species, resulting in a high catalytic efficiency for soot oxidation. Abstract:The regeneration mechanism of sulfated Cu/SAPO-34 catalysts in reducing atmospheres (5% H2/Ar and NH3/Ar at 600 °C) was investigated by using a series of characterization methods. Hydrogen regeneration improved the catalysts' NH3-SCR activity from 150 to 550 °C remarkably, while ammonia regeneration exhibited relatively less obvious promotion effect. The TPR of hydrogen and EPR spectra data show that the regeneration process affects the amount and the coordination of the active isolated Cu2+ species significantly. The desulfation increases the amount of isolated copper ions and improves the catalytic activity of SCR.

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2, MnOx and CeO2 catalysts were synthesized by the sol–gel method. The structural, redox and adsorption properties of the individual and mixed oxides were investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET), CO temperature-programmed reduction (TPR), NO temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO), NOx temperature-programmed desorption (TPD) and in situ diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS). The TPO tests were performed with the soot–catalyst mixture under loose contact conditions to evaluate the catalytic activity of the oxide catalysts for soot oxidation. The MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxide catalyst presents the lowest soot oxidation temperature among the catalysts investigated in the presence of NO and O2. The synergetic effect between manganese oxide and ceria restrains the growth of oxide crystallites, increases the specific surface area and improves the low-temperature redox property. Especially, the activity of MnOx–CeO2 mixed oxides for NO oxidation and its capacity for NO2 storage in the form of surface nitrates are greatly enhanced. Not only the NO2 released from decomposition of surface nitrates but also that formed by catalytic oxidation of gaseous or adsorbed NO on the catalyst is confirmed important for soot oxidation. It is found by the in situ DRIFTS tests with the soot–catalyst mixture that the generation of surface oxygen complexes (SOCs), such as carboxylic anhydrides, lactones, quinine, ceto-enol groups, ethers and phenols, occurs at about 100°C lower temperature with exposure to NO than in the absence of NO, which is an important step for soot oxidation.

Abstract:MnOx–CeO2–Al2O3 mixed oxide catalyst, which is efficient for soot oxidation in NO + O2 with T50 = 437 °C, shows a poor resistance to sulfur dioxide with T50 raised to 534 °C. The sulfated catalyst was treated in a reducing atmosphere (5% H2/He) at different temperatures (500, 600, and 700 °C). The catalysts were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) analysis, infrared (IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), temperature-programmed decomposition (TPD) of sulfates, and temperature-programmed reduction (TPR) of hydrogen. The catalytic activities for soot and NO oxidation were evaluated using the temperature-programmed oxidation (TPO) process. The sulfates can be only partially removed by the reduction treatment at low temperatures, whereas the sintering of metal oxides turns to be a more important factor responsible for the deactivation of catalysts reduced at high temperatures. Sulfation of Pt/MnCeAl catalyst for soot oxidation

Abstract:The aim of this project was to investigate the sulfur stability of Pt/MnCeAl catalysts for soot oxidation. The Pt/MnCeAl catalysts were prepared in different conditions; fresh, sulfated in wet conditions, sulfated in dry conditions and impregnated with sulfuric acid. Thermal ageing and sulfur poisoning treatments were performed to examine the stability of the catalysts. The catalysts were characterized and the activities were measured with different techniques. The catalyst in wet conditions (PMCA-HS) showed a better SO2 conversion and the least severe sulfur poisoning. This may indicate that in wet conditions the catalyst adsorbed less sulfur than in dry conditions, although it converted more SO2 to SO3. However, no conclusions could be drawn regarding which type of sulfates that were formed, and whether they were bulk or dispersed surface sulfates. The catalyst in wet conditions showed the lowest T50, which means it had the highest soot oxidation at a lower temperature. The conclusions that could be drawn from the experiments were that the PMCA-HS sample is a promising catalyst for soot oxidation, it exhibits a good thermal stability and resistance to sulfur dioxide, however more research needs to be done.

Abstract:A Pt/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst was synthesized by impregnating a Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 support with Pt(NO3)2 solution. This material exhibits higher catalytic activity than Pt/Al2O3 for soot oxidation under loose contact conditions in both NO + O2 and O2 atmospheres. The results show that the pronounced activity of this catalyst is attributed to a synergistic effect arising from the combination of Pt and Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 solid solution, leading to a remarkable increase in the availability of active oxygen at temperatures as low as 450 °C. The NONO2 recycling efficiency is improved over Pt/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst, enhancing the ability of the NO2-soot reaction to generate surface oxygenated complexes (SOCs) on the soot. More importantly, the catalytic oxidation of these SOCs can be accelerated with the participation of active oxygen from the CeO2-ZrO2 solid solution. As a result, during soot oxidation under NO + O2, the light-off temperature of the Pt/Ce0.6Zr0.4O2 catalyst is lowered by 34 °C than that of Pt/Al2O3 catalyst.
Supported Metal Sulfates on Ce–TiOx As Catalysts for NH3–SCR of NO: High Resistances to SO2 and Potassium

Abstract:Cu and Fe sulfates were loaded on a Ce-Ti mixed oxide and tested for the reduction of NO with NH3. The loading of metal sulfate greatly enhances the resistance to SO2 of the Ce-Ti oxide. The prepared catalysts also show better performances after doping with K2O if compared to the V-W-TiOx catalyst. Surface characterizations reveal that better resistance to potassium oxide can be attributed to better acidity and reducibility. The catalyst with iron sulfate supported on Ce-TiOx was found to be a promising catalyst for NO removal in the flue gas with high alkali metal content. Abstract:Catalytic diesel particulate filter is an efficient equipment for particulate matters control downstream of a diesel engine. MnO x –CeO 2 mixed oxides are a potential alternative of the high cost commercial platinum catalyst. However, the poor thermal stability and sulfur resistance are two issues challenging its application. Additionally, the mechanism of synergistic effect between manganese oxide and ceria still remained debatable. Here, the catalysis mechanisms in the presence/absence of NO x were reviewed. The origins of synergistic effects were discussed based on whether the solid solutions formed or not. Meanwhile, different kinds of metal modifications were summarized and their promotion influences on the thermal stability and sulfur resistance were clarified in detail. Graphical Abstract

Abstract:Mn–Ce–OX catalysts loaded on TiO2-carbonaceous materials were prepared by sol–gel method. Selective catalytic reduction of NOX was conducted in a fixed-bed flow-reactor over catalysts coated on aluminum plates. A de-NOX efficiency of more than 90% was obtained over the Mn–Ce–OX/TiO2-carbon nanotubes (CNTs) catalyst between 75°C and 225°C under a gas hourly space velocity (GHSV) of ~36,000h−1. This activity improvement is attributed to the increase of the BET surface area, and the occurrence of reaction between adsorbed NOX and NH3. Moreover, the de-NOX efficiency was increased to 99.6% by adding 250ppm SO2 between 100°C and 250°C.

Abstract:The performance of catalysts used in after-treatment systems is the key factor for the removal of diesel soot, which is an important component of atmospheric fine particle emissions. Herein, three-dimensionally ordered macroporous-mesoporous TixSi1-xO2 (3DOM-m TixSi1-xO2) and its supported MnOx catalysts doped with different alkali/alkaline-earth metals (AMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 (A: Li, Na, K, Ru, Cs, Mg, Ca, Sr, Ba)) were prepared by mesoporous template (P123)-assisted colloidal crystal template (CCT) and incipient wetness impregnation methods, respectively. Physicochemical characterizations of the catalysts were performed using scanning electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, N2 adsorption-desorption, H2 temperature-programmed reduction, O2 temperature-programmed desorption, NO temperature-programmed oxidation, and Raman spectroscopy techniques; then, we evaluated their catalytic performances for the removal of diesel soot particles. The results show that the 3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 supports exhibited a well-defined 3DOM-m nanostructure, and AMnOx nanoparticles with 10-50 nm were evenly dispersed on the inner walls of the uniform macropores. In addition, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited good catalytic performance for soot combustion. Among the prepared catalysts, CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 had the highest catalytic activity for soot combustion, with T10, T50, and T90 (the temperatures corresponding to soot conversion rates of 10%, 50%, and 90%) values of 285, 355, and 393°C, respectively. The high catalytic activity of the CsMnOx/3DOM-m Ti0.7Si0.3O2 catalysts was attributed to their excellent low-temperature reducibility and homogeneous macroporous-mesoporous structure, as well as to the synergistic effects between Cs and Mn species and between CsMnOx and the Ti0.7Si0.3O2 support.

Abstract:Mn-based catalysts present a great prospect for application in selective catalytic reduction (SCR) of NO x with NH3 at low temperatures, due to their high low-temperature catalytic activity. However, poor resistance of Mn-based catalysts to SO2 and H2O restricts their industrial application. This paper investigates the SO2&H2O resistance of MnO x -CeO2/TiO2 catalyst and discusses the poisoning mechanism based on catalytic characterizations. The results indicate that MnO x -CeO2/TiO2 catalyst exhibit high tolerance to SO2 poisoning mainly because the surface sulfates are preferentially formed on Ce dopants so that protect the main active component (MnO x ). Catalytic deactivation become more severe when SO2&H2O are simultaneously present, which implies that SO2&H2O exhibit a synergistic toxicity in poisoning catalyst. Interestingly, the presence of H2O can alleviate the formation of surface metal sulfates on catalyst to some extent, for the surface reactive oxygen species and the surface acid sites are preserved to fulfill the low temperature SCR reaction cycle. Thermal regenerations under different atmosphere (e.g., O2 and H2O) are conducted for the SO2 poisoned catalyst. Effective regeneration of the sulfated catalyst can be realized and their regeneration mechanisms are explored by utilization of several catalytic characterizations.

Abstract:Chromium oxide nano-particles with an average diameter of 3 nm covered by amorphous carbon (CrOx/C) were successfully synthesized. The synthesized CrOx/C materials were used for the selective catalytic reduction of NOx by NH3 (NH3-SCR), which shows superb NH3-SCR activity and in particular, satisfactory regeneration ability in the presence of SO2 compared with Mn-based catalysts. The as-prepared catalysts were characterized by XRD, HRTEM, Raman, FTIR, BET, TPD, TPR, XPS and in situ FTIR techniques. The results indicated presence of certain amounts of unstable lattice oxygen exposed on the surface of CrOx nano-particles with an average size of 3 nm in the CrOx/C samples, which led to NO being conveniently oxidized to NO2. The formed NO2 participated in NH3-SCR activity, reacting with catalysts via a “fast NH3-SCR” pathway, which enhanced th NH3-SCR performance of the CrOx/C catalysts. Furthermore, the stable lattice of the CrOx species made the catalyst immune to the sulfation process, which was inferred to be the cause of its superior regeneration ability in the presence of SO2. This study provides a simple way to synthesize stable CrOx nano-particles with active oxygen, and sheds light on designing NH3-SCR catalysts with highly efficient low temperature activity, SO2 tolerance, and regeneration ability.
Cu-Mn-Ce Mixed Oxides Catalysts for Soot Oxidation and Their Mechanistic Chemistry

Abstract:A series of flower-like CuxMnyCez mixed oxides catalysts for soot removal were prepared via a facile co-precipitation approach followed by calcination. The structural and surface properties of these catalysts were investigated by powder X-ray diffraction, N-2 physisorption, transmission electron microscopy, scanning electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, hydrogen temperature-programmed reduction, oxygen temperature-programmed desorption and NO temperature-programmed oxidation. Superior soot oxidation performance was obtained over these ternary mixed oxides catalysts and the corresponding mechanism was explored. In particular, the Cu1Mn1Ce1 catalyst showed a remarkable improvement in soot oxidation activity in both NO + O-2 and O-2 atmospheres. The reusability and durability of these catalysts were assessed, and these materials showed high soot oxidation activity after the hydrothermal stability test.

Abstract:In this study, the Co(3-x)MnxO4@TiO2 core-shell catalysts prepared by sol-gel and external kinetic coating method were investigated for DeNOx by response surface methodology (RSM) using 3-factor with 5-level experiments. Compared with CoMn2O4 sample, the CoMn2O4@TiO2 catalyst was optimized to obtain almost 100% NOx conversion at 125°C to 225°C that also maintained above 80% SCR activity with 100 ppm SO2 and 10 vol.% H2O in the testing time within 24 h. The XRD and Raman show a clear distinction of that CoMn2O4 spinel phase was well-dispersed on anatase TiO2 over CoMn2O4@TiO2 catalyst, which exhibited a core-shell structure with obvious distribution boundary of CoMn2O4 core coated by TiO2 shell confirmed by TEM images. This intact catalyst presented complete TiO2 coating structure due to the detected bonds Mn-O, Co-O and particular Ti-O via FT-IR analysis. NH3-TPD and H2-TPR profiles indicated that the CoMn2O4@TiO2 catalyst owned more acid sites, stronger acidity and enhanced redox capacities benefiting from its core-shell structure after TiO2 coating. According to XPS analysis, higher content of (Mn3++Mn4+)/(Mn2++Mn3++Mn4+) (77.7%), Co3+/ (Co2+ + Co3+) (53.5%) and surface oxygen (26.1%) were in favour of valence electron interaction (Mn4++Co2+↔Mn3++ Co3+, Mn3++Ti4+↔Mn4++ Ti3+). The NH3-SCR reaction pathways over CoMn2O4 and CoMn2O4@TiO2 catalysts were compared and proposed through DRIFTS experiments, which mainly follows the typical Eley-Rideal (E-R) mechanism, while the Langmuir-Hinshelwood (L-H) mechanism is weak at 225 °C. This study opens up a new avenue for designing efficient and environment-friendly NH3-SCR catalysts and looks promising for practical application.
