Abstract:Alkali treatment has been widely used for the surface modification of Ti and Ti alloys for clinical applications. However, the mechanism underlying the effects of the alkali-treated Ti surface on the cell response still needs to be explored. In this study, we demonstrated that the cell responses on a H2Ti3O7 nanowire film, normally titanate generated on a Ti surface via alkali treatment and ion exchange, were sensitive to the surface hydroxyl groups of the H2Ti3O7 nanowire films, i.e. the total amount as well as comparative ratio of the distinct type of surface hydroxyl groups (bridging-OH and terminal-OH). The surface hydroxyl groups of H2Ti3O7 nanowires were further controlled via heat treatment to produce anatase TiO2 nanowire films. Although there was no difference in both topographies, cells on a H2Ti3O7 nanowire film showed more elongated shape than those on an anatase nanowire film. Moreover, the expression of ALP of cells on H2Ti3O7 upregulated as compared to that on the anatase nanowire film at day 4, suggesting enhanced osteogenic capacity at an early stage. These results could be attributed to the difference in the distinct ratio of the terminal hydroxyl groups to the bridging hydroxyl groups, which was 0.42 for the H2Ti3O7 nanowire film and 0.75 for the anatase nanowire film. It appeared that the bridging hydroxyl groups on H2Ti3O7 were efficient in attracting Ca2+, which influenced the cell morphology and further upregulated the early differentiation.

Abstract:•The anodization conditions were studied carefully and the uniform surface morphology was obtained under certain conditions.•Unique morphology composed by nanowire@nanotube can be seen after calcining treatment.•The water contact angle before and after UV light illumination were test repetitively, and the error of water contact angle were measured. Tiny change of contact angle was observed when samples were annealed at 600°C.•The sample annealed at 600°C exhibits the highest photocatalytical activity among the samples.

Abstract:The bioactive nanowire of sodium hydrogen titanium oxide (Na0.8H1.2Ti3O7) was obtained by Chemical treating the surface of TiO2-based coating containing Si and Ca (SC) prepared by microarc oxidation (MAO). During the chemical treatment, the dissolution of Ca and Si, and the deposition of Na appear on the surface of the SC coating. The chemically treated SC coating shows better hydrophilic and apatite-formation ability than those of the SC coating, which could be associated with the special structure such as OH group in the sodium hydrogen titanium oxide (SHTO) as well as the Ti-OH group formation during the simulated body fluid immersion. At the same time, the SHTO nanowire is more suitable for the MC3T3-E1 cell adhesion and proliferation due to surface morphology, phase composition, OH group structure and better wetting ability.

Abstract:TiO 2 nanotube arrays have aroused great interest because of their enormous application in areas such as gas sensor, catalysts, biological materials, and solar cells. In this report, TiO 2 nanowires/nanobelts originating from TiO2 nanotube arrays are fabricated by simple anodization of Ti foils in ethylene glycol (EG) containing 0.25wt% NH 4 F. From the field emission scanning electron microscopy (FE-SEM) it is observed that the morphology of the special structure is influenced by anodization voltage, water content and anodization time. In these factors, small amount of water plays a very important role in making the special nanostructure. Moreover, a possible mechanism that showed a relationship between the formation of the special structure and electric field directed chemical etch is proposed.

Abstract:In this paper, we first reported the crystalline transition from H2Ti3O7 nanotubes to anatase TiO2 nanocrystallines under low-temperature hydrothermal conditions (similar to 140 degrees C). A newly proposed mechanism for the crystalline transition from H2Ti3O7 nanotubes to anatase TiO2 nanocrystallines under low-temperature conditions is discussed in detail, which is supported by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution transmission electronic microscope, selected-area electron diffraction, and crystal structure models.

Abstract:We report anodic formation of Ti-Nb-O nanotubes on top of a Ti35Nb alloy, and in vitro bioactivity and stem cell response of the anodic nanotubes. It was found that the amorphous Ti-Nb-O nanotubes presented a significantly enhanced in vitro bioactivity (in simulated body fluids) compared to those of undoped TiO2 nanotubes and porous Ti-Nb-O without nanotubular structure. Similar to undoped TiO2 nanotubes, the Ti-Nb-O nanotubes also promote mesenchymal stem cell adhesion and fast formation of extracellular matrix (ECM) materials. The above findings make it possible to further explore the biological properties, such as cell proliferation and drug delivery, of a variety of Ti-alloy-based oxide nanotubes.

Abstract:Two-dimensional millimetric microarrays of TiO2 nanowires were fabricated in this work. Anatase nanowires with lengths over 15 mm and widths of ca. 20 nm were synthesized from an octahedral-like (monomer)Ti precursor, titanium(IV) bis(ammonium lactato)dihydroxide. Incomplete hydrolysis of the Ti precursor triggered the alignment of the hydrolyzed Ti-O octahedral species to form one-dimensional nanostructures. The formation of two-and three-dimensional microarrays of nanowires was influenced by the molar ratio of the surfactants, oleic acid, and hydrazine, employed in the synthesis. Furthermore, the millimetric microarrays of TiO2 nanowires displayed excellent adsorption and photocatalytic performance.

Abstract:Using anodized pure aluminum, 3102 aluminum alloy and 6061 aluminum alloy as the templates, TiO2 thin films were prepared through a liquid deposition method. The TiO2 nanotuhes fabricated on the 3102 aluminum alloy substrate had one-dimensional tubular structures, similar to that obtained on pure aluminum substrate, whereas that prepared on the 6061 aluminum alloy substrate had bamboo-like structure with holes. It was found that the growth of TiO2 nanotubes or nanorods was correlated with AAO templates. The morphology control and morphology transformation mechanism were discussed. The results showed that the deposition temperature in the range of 30-40 = C was favorable for the formation of TiO2 nanoarrays, The photocatalytic capability of the TiO2 films prepared on the aluminum alloy is superior to that of the films fabricated on the pure aluminum. The main alloying elements Si was doped into TiO2 lattice to form Ti-O-Si bonds, resulting in the enhanced photocatalytic activity.
Field-emission Properties of TiO2 Nanowire Arrays

Abstract:Aligned TiO2 nanowire arrays were fabricated onto Si wafers by a simple thermal deposition (PVD) method. Scanning electron microscopy and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy observations confirm that the as-prepared TiO2 nanowires are single-crystalline and of high purity. Field emission measurements showed that the TiO2 nanowire arrays could provide stable, high-current electron emission at a low voltage. The emission current monitored over a period of 24 h fluctuated gently but did not show degradation. The cathode-luminescence (CL) images captured by a CCD camera were very bright and their CL intensity was homogeneous. This remarkable performance reveals that TiO2 nanowire arrays are well suited for commercial use in electron devices, particularly flat panel displays.

Abstract:TiO 2 nanorod films with diverse and evolutionary morphologies are synthesized by controllable hydrothermal method under mild conditions. The as-prepared nanorod films are well characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Results demonstrate that reasonable control of time of secondary growth could easily and conveniently achieve the goal of morphology adjustment during mild condition hydrothermal synthesis process.

Abstract:Heterostructured TiO2/In2O3 nanowires have been extensively applied in various photonic devices; their performance is highly related to the microstructures, which has not been, however, clearly understood; thus, it is important to investigate the microstructural evolution of the material during processing. In this work, the crystallinity and microstructure of TiO2/In2O3 nanowires were successfully controlled with the variation of annealing temperatures via solid-state reactions. The dynamic phase transformation process was demonstrated by in situ transmission electron microscope (TEM). Moreover, the elemental information at different states was identified by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS). It is found that different annealing temperatures would contribute to different solid-state reactions and nanowire heterostructures. Additionally, photoresponse studies show characteristics enhancement for such nanoheterostructures. This study provides the knowledge of the fundamental science in kinetics of heterostructured nanostructures, which benefits the improvement of the performance for future photonic applications.

Hydrothermal Synthesis of TiO2 Nanostructure Films and Their Photoelectrochemical Properties

Abstract:In this study, anatase TiO2 nanostructured films were successfully prepared via Ti foil-assisted hydrothermal synthesis method without any surfactants. With the increase of hydrothermal time from 3 to 12 h, the surface morphologies of the films changed from nanotubes to nanoflowers and the thickness of the films increased from 2.5 to 4.2 mu m. The nanoflowers were seated on a layer of oriented nanotubes and consisted of nanosheets. Both nanotubes and nanosheets were multi-walled, comprising interconnected [TiO6] octahedra. Ti foil and acid-treated Ti foil both formed pieces of thin films on the surface with nanotubes and nanoflowers, respectively. Photoelectrochemistry tests showed that the photocurrent response of the nanotube film was nearly 13.8 mu A/cm(2), which was approximately three times higher than that of nanoflowers film. This indicates that the nanotubes more successfully transferred electrons to the surface of the film as a result of nanotubes providing direct pathways for electrons from the point of injection to the Ti foil electrode. The ultraviolet (UV)-visible-near infrared (NIR) absorption spectra indicated that the nanotube film had a narrower band gap as compared to the nanoflower film. In other words, a relatively low hydrothermal treatment temperature or relatively short hydrothermal treatment time is better for preparing excellent photocurrent response films. Abstract:Nano-TiO2 and micro-TiO2 thick films were prepared on alpha-Al2O3 substrates by silk net lithograph method, the measured film resistance of nano-TiO2 was higher than that of micro-TiO2 in experimental temperature range, nano-TiO2 film demonstrated more change as the O-2 partial pressure changed. XRD and SEM were also used to characterize the stucture of the prepared films.

Abstract:One-dimensional (1-D) TiO2-B nanowires have been synthesized via a facile solvothermal route. The morphology and crystalline structures of the nanowires were characterized by using powder X-ray diffraction, low/high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and Brunauer-Emmett-Teller methods. It is important with the calcination treatment at 350 degrees C to maintain 1-D morphologies of the material in the form of single-crystalline TiO2-B nanowires. In addition, a simple method was used to study the photogenerated charge transfer and photoelectrochemical properties of the TiO2-B nanowires in comparison with commercial TiO2 P25 nanoparticles based on the experimental data from the electric field-effected photocurrent action spectrum and Mott-Schottky measurements. It was revealed that TiO2-B nanostructures played an important role in the photoelectrochemical processes. The synthetic TiO2-B nanowire electrode exhibited unique electronic properties, e.g., favorable charge-transfer ability, negative-shifted appearing flat-band potential, existence of abundant surface states or oxygen vacancies, and high-level dopant density. Moreover, the obtained TiO2-B nanowires were found to display excellent humidity sensing abilities as functional materials in the humidity sensor application. With relative humidity increased from 5% to 95%, about one and half orders of magnitude change in resistance was observed in the TiO2-B nanowire-based surface-type humidity sensors.

Abstract:Photocatalytic anatase TiO2 nanowire thin films have been prepared by in situ oxidation of Ti plate in a mixture solution of concentrated H(2)O(2) and NaOH, followed by proton exchange and calcination. The morphologies and properties of the titanate and titania films have been investigated by means of field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive x-ray spectrometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy, x-ray diffraction and Raman spectrometry. The mechanism of formation of the porous microstructure has been discussed; it is the result of the balance between dissolution and precipitation. And sodium ions in the solution are needed to combine with titanate species for the nanowire formation. The anatase TiO2 nanowire thin films exhibited enhanced photocatalytic activity and stability in phenol degradation. The combination effects of the porous morphology and nanowire characteristics are favorable for improved photocatalytic performance. This novel nanowire film is promising for practical aqueous purification.

Abstract:Hierarchical TiO2 nanostructures with the nanograss at the top and the close-ended nanotube at the bottom were synthesized by an extended electrochemical anodization process. Upon thermal annealing, the hierarchical TiO2 nanostructures exhibit a morphology-dependent phase transformation behavior: the amorphous as-prepared nanotube layer undergoes an amorphous-anatase-rutile phase transformation upon annealing at 550 degrees C and 850 degrees C, respectively; the nanograss, on the other hand, remains in the anatase phase with an annealing temperature up to 850 degrees C and becomes anatase-dominant anatase-rutile-multiphase at 900 degrees C. In addition, the nanotube and nanograss exhibit intriguing light-emitting properties. A two-dimensional Xray absorption near-edge structure X-ray excited optical luminescence (2D XANES-XEOL) spectroscopy technique is used to investigate such phenomenon, which correlates the origin of the luminescence with the local chemical entrainment of the nanostructured TiO2. Implications of these observations are thoroughly discussed. These properties are desirable for the engineering of novel TiO2 nanoheterostructures for photocatalysis as well as optical and photonic devices, especially the fabrication of a stable high temperature anatase phase.

Abstract:Titanium oxide nanotube arrays were fabricated in mixed solutions of H3PO4 and HE The diameters of the nanotube vary from 10 nm to more than 100 nm with the increase of applied voltages. The length of the nanotubes at first increases with the anodizing time and then reaches a maximum value due to a dynamic balance of titania formation and dissolution. Well-ordered nanotube arrays of titania with a length of up to 1. 1 mu m have been prepared via constant-voltage experiments. Stability of the nanotube structure and crystal phase transition were studied in different atmospheres. Experiments showed nanotube structures were stable up to 600 degrees C. Properties of titania nanotube arrays including photocatalytic degradation methyl orange and their hydrophilic ability were also determined. (C) 2006 Published by Elsevier B.V.

Abstract:Highly ordered TiO2 single-crystalline nanowire arrays have been fabricated within the pores of anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template by a cathodically induced sol−gel method. Raman spectra confirmed that the nanowires are composed of pure anatase TiO2. TEM investigations indicated that these nanowires have a uniform tetragonal single-crystal structure. Finally, a possible growth mechanism of the TiO2 nanowires is discussed.

Abstract:Studies have shown that anodically grown TiO 2 nanotubes (TNTs) exhibit excellent biocompatibility. However, TiO 2 nanowires (TNWs) have received less attention. The objective of this study was to investigate the proliferation of osteoblast precursor cells on the surfaces of TNWs grown by electrochemical anodization of a Ti-35Nb-7Zr-5Ta (TNZT) alloy. TNT and flat TNZT surfaces were used as control samples. MC3T3-E1 cells were cultured on the surfaces of the samples for up to 5 days, and cell viability and proliferation were investigated using fluorescence microscopy, colorimetric assay, and scanning electron microscopy. The results showed lower cell proliferation rates on the TNW surface compared to control samples without significant differences in cell survival among experimental conditions. Contact angles measurements showed a good level of hydrophilicity for the TNWs, however, their relatively thin diameter and their high density may have affected cell proliferation. Although more research is necessary to understand all the parameters affecting biocompatibility, these TiO 2 nanostructures may represent promising tools for the treatment of bone defects and regeneration of bone tissue, among other applications.
