Abstract:Rh(III)-catalyzed C(sp(3)) - H bond aminocarbonylation of 8-methylquinolines and isocyanates has been realized under mild conditions. This approach is applicable to different aryl and alkyl isocyanates, leading to the synthesis of various alpha-quinolinyl amide compounds in moderate to excellent yields. A plausible mechanism for this transformation is proposed according to the experimental results obtained.

Abstract:C-N Bond formation is of great significance due to the ubiquity of nitrogen-containing compounds. Here, a mild and efficient RhIII-catalyzed C(sp(3))-H aryl amination reaction is reported. Anthranil is employed as the nitrogen source with 100% atom efficiency. This C-H amination reaction exhibits broad substrate scope without using any external oxidants. Mechanistic studies including rhodacycle intermediates, H-D exchange, kinetic isotope effect (KIE) experiments, and in situ IR are presented.

Abstract:The formation of C–N bonds is a fundamental bond construction in organic synthesis. In this context, a [RhCp*Cl2]2/AgSbF6 system was developed for the C2‐amination of ketoximes with anthranils with the use of Piv2O as a promoter. Piv2O played an important role in the generation of catalytically active species with [RhCp*Cl2]2. The oxime unit was revealed to be effective chelating groups to activate the aryl C–H bond. The amination shows a wide substrates scope, and several important functional groups were tolerated under the benign reaction conditions.

Abstract:A nickel-catalyzed Kumada coupling of aniline derivatives was developed by selective cleavage of aryl C-N bonds under mild reaction conditions. Without preinstallation of an ortho directing group on anilines, the cross-coupling reactions of Boc-protected aromatic amines with aryl Grignard reagents afforded unsymmetric biaryls. Mechanistic studies by DFT calculations revealed that the nickel-mediated C-N bond cleavage is the rate-limiting step.

Abstract:C−H bond cleavage is a key step for the formation of new C−Rh bond in Rh-catalyzed alkylation of aniline derivatives. Due to the inherent basicity of aniline, there is ongoing debate regarding its ability to act as a Brønsted base to assist C−H bond cleavage in these type reactions. In this report, we present computational evidence supporting an amino-assisted outer-sphere concerted metalation-deprotonation (CMD) mechanism. Here, the aniline acts as a Brønsted base to facilitate C−H bond cleavage without any direct interaction between the Rh and the aniline. This amino-assisted outer-sphere CMD pathway is found to be lower in energy compared with the inner-sphere CMD and other base-assisted C−H bond cleavage pathways, providing new insights into the mechanism of Rh-catalyzed C−H functionalization of aniline derivatives. Geometric analysis was conducted to elucidate details of the C−H bond cleavage process. This mechanistic study of C−H bond cleavage in Rh-catalyzed oxidative C−H alkylation of aniline derivatives with allyl alcohols is an important case study of the involvement of amino-assisted outer-sphere CMD in Rh catalysis. We anticipate that the novel amino-assisted outer-sphere CMD mode may extend to other C−H bond functionalization processes and explain the unique effectiveness of aniline in many instances.

Abstract:While X-ray crystallography routinely provides structural characterization of kinetically stable pre-catalysts and intermediates, elucidation of the structures of transient reactive intermediates, which are intimately engaged in bond-breaking and -making during catalysis, is generally not possible. Here, we demonstrate in crystallo synthesis of Rh2 nitrenoids that participate in catalytic C–H amination, and we characterize these transient intermediates as triplet adducts of Rh2. Further, we observe the impact of coordinating substrate, which is present in excess during catalysis, on the structure of transient Rh2 nitrenoids. Abstract:N-Nitroso compounds are a versatile class of organic structures that allow expedient access to a diversity of synthetically useful architectures through demonstrated reactivities. We report herein the development of a Rh(III)-catalyzed N-nitroso-directed methodology for the ortho-olefination of arenes. The heightened reactivity endowed by the N-nitroso group translates to mild reaction conditions, high reaction yields, and synthetic compatibility of otherwise elusive substrates (e.g., an unactivated olefin, 1-octene). Comprehensive mechanistic studies on the electronic effect, deuterium exchange, kinetic isotope effect, kinetic profile, and numerous Rh(III) complexes have established [RhCp*](2+) as the catalyst resting state, electrophilic C-H activation as the turnover-limiting step, and a five-membered rhodacycle as a catalytically competent intermediate. The ability to elaborate the N-nitroso moiety to an amine functionality provides a seminal example of the innumerable synthetic possibilities offered by this transformable directing group.

Abstract:In this paper, rhodium‐catalyzed sequential twofold ortho ‐C‐H functionalization of N ‐phenylbenzimidamide with internal alkyne is studied. The double C‐H activations proved viable in a one‐pot fashion with the assistance of C=N and C‐N, providing a serial of benzimidazoisoquinolines with high levels of positional selectivity control. The operationally simple transformation showed high functional group compatibility and featured with cleavage of the C‐H bonds located on different moiety of the N ‐phenylbenzimidamide substrates. Detailed mechanistic studies provided strong support for C−H bond cleavage on N ‐phenyl ring is preferential than C‐H bond on C‐phenyl ring. As a multifunctional catalytic platform, the rhodium catalyst conducted two independent and compatible catalytic cycles in one pot.

Abstract:An unprecedented Ir(III)-catalyzed C-H activation/amination/annulation of 2-phenyloxazoles with anthranils for the highly selective preparation of acridone derivatives in one-pot under controlled conditions is reported. This protocol is characterized by atom economy and high regioselectivity. A wide range of anthranils with 2-phenyloxazoles were well tolerated and afforded the desired products in moderate to good yields, in which the anthranil serves as a convenient amination reagent.

Abstract:A practical method for the synthesis of N‐(2‐carbonylaryl) benzenesulfonamides via an iron‐catalyzed electrophilic amination of sodium sulfinates with anthranils is described. This redox‐neutral transformation has high atom efficiency and is achieved under simple and mild reaction conditions. A wide range of anthranils and sodium sulfinates were compatible in this transformation. Moreover, the synthetic potential of this methodology was further demonstrated by the synthesis of various useful N‐heterocycles and derivatives.

Abstract:Described herein is the development of an unprecedented approach to direct amination of unstrained aryl-ketone Csp2–Csp2 sigma bonds with sulfonylazides via Rh(III)-catalyzed Csp2–Csp2 cleavage.
