Abstract:ZnF2, CdF2, and CuF2 have been adsorbed onto the surface of montmorillonite K10, and the infrared and 19F, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR spectra of the resulting reagents over a range of loadings and activation temperatures have been obtained. CuF2 was observed to attack the SiO2 layer and form the complex CuSiF6, ZnF2 tends to attack the aluminium oxide layer, in which Zn isomorphously replaces Al, and forms AlF3 and AlF4− complexes. The spectroscopic evidence rules out the formation of any Al–F and (or) Si–F species as CdF2 is adsorbed on the surface of montmorillonite K10. The reactivity of MF2–K10 reagents towards the Friedel–Crafts reaction of benzene with benzyl chloride varies from one reagent to another. ZnF2–K10 was observed to be the most reactive and CuF2 was the least reactive.

Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:Chloroaluminate ionic liquid bound on magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@O2Si[PrMIM]Cl·AlCl3) was prepared and used as a heterogenous Lewis acidic catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts sulfonylation of aromatic compounds with sulfonyl chlorides or p-toluenesulfonic anhydride. The catalyst’s stability, efficiency, easy recovery, and high recyclability without considerable loss of catalytic capability after four recycles were evidence of its advantages. Furthermore, the stoichiometry, wide substrate scope, short reaction time, high yield of sulfones, and solvent-free reaction condition also made this procedure practical, ecofriendly, and economical.

Abstract:Knoevenagel condensation of aromatic aldehydes with active methylene compounds such as malononitrile, ethylcyanoacetate, benzimidazol-2-acetonitrile and benzothiazole-2-acetonitrile proceeded very smoothly, catalyzed by nano-Fe3O4 encapsulated-silica particles supported primary amine. Both reaction time and yield are satisfying. The advantages of this catalyst are ease of preparation, non-toxicity, low cost, ease of handling and recyclability.

Abstract:Friedel–Crafts alkylation of benzene with linear chain olefin (C10–C14), which is an important reaction of synthetic detergent, was studied via different catalysts of aluminum impregnated silica molecular sieves. AlCl3 was immobilized on silica molecular sieves with different channel structures, hexagonal packing channels network (SBA-15, MCM-41), and disordered channel network (SiO2, SiO2-Gel) by impregnation. XRD and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms confirmed that the specific mesoporous structures were maintained for order channel network catalyst after impregnation. Catalytic activities were investigated under different conditions. The influences of channel structure were discussed. The results showed that catalyst based on mesoporous like SBA-15 had the highest catalytic activities and 2-LAB selectivity compared with other catalysts in this work. The highest 2-LAB selectivity was nearly 50% when 1-dodecene conversion was nearly 100%. At low 1-dodecene conversion or higher benzene/1-dodecene molar ratio, 2-LAB selectivity was nearly 60%.

Abstract:In this study, a novel La(III)-based two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework, [La2/3 (qptca)1/2 ] (referred to as SLX-2), from LaCl3 and 1,1' : 4',1'' : 4'',1''' : 4''',1''''-quinquephenyl]-2,2'',2'''',5''-tetracarboxylic acid (H4 qptca) was synthesized by conventional solvothermal method and thoroughly characterized by using X-ray single-crystal diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses. The 2D SLX-2 features a unique lanthanum center exposed to the skeleton and was used as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and pyrrole with β-nitrostyrene along with a wide substrate scope, giving the desired products in good-to-high yields under the optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was used for twenty cycles, with nearly no effect on its activity, and the reaction was heterogeneous in nature. Moreover, compared to the previous hydrogen-bond-donating MOF catalysts for such alkylation reactions, SLX-2 showed an excellent stability toward harsh acidic and basic environment, and gave comparable catalytic activities.

Abstract:The catalytic behaviors of zeolites with MFI, FAU, BEA, MOR, and MWW topologies and Si/Al ratios between 10 and 19 were examined in the toluene alkylation by methyl mercaptan (CH3SH). Over all catalysts, at 375 °C, the reagents have been primarily consumed in alkylation reactions, and only less than 2% of CH3SH led to the formation of light hydrocarbons. Based on extensive experiments, we showed that the crucial variables affecting the activity, the selectivity, and the deactivation of the catalysts were their pore size/architecture and the amount of the acid sites. ZSM-5 (MFI, Si/Al = 15) outperformed the other zeolites, exhibiting higher selectivity in alkylation and substantially higher resistance to the deactivation.

Abstract:The effects of the activation of K10 montmorillonite supported zinc chloride ('Clayzic') by different methods on the reactivity of the catalyst in the Friedel-Crafts benzylation of benzene and halobenzenes have been investigated. There is an optimum temperature for thermal activation in air at which point a rate enhancement, compared to unactivated Clayzic, in the benzylation of benzene of greater than 30 has been achieved. The rate limiting factor for these reactions is believed to be the ability of the aromatic substrate to enter the polar mesopores containing the active zinc ions in Clayzic, causing unexpected and activation-dependent rate trends to be observed. Activation of Clayzic is believed to reduce the polar nature of the pores, so aiding partitioning of the substrate into the catalyst.

Abstract:Friedel‐Crafts alkylation reaction is one of the well‐known C‐C bonds forming reactions in organic chemistry catalyzed by homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Aluminosilicates and zeolites have been extensively employed as heterogeneous catalysts between Lewis and Bronsted acids as active sites for this reaction. In this line, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have also been receiving considerable attention for this reaction in the last two decades. Thus, this review aims to present the catalytic performance of MOFs with Lewis acid/Bronsted acid sites or hydrogen bonding donor sites as potential catalysts to promote the widely employed Friedel‐Crafts alkylation to form C‐C bonds between arenes and electron poor olefins, alcohols, or alkyl bromides. Such acid active sites are present either at the organic linkers or inorganic clusters of the crystalline porous framework, resulting in well‐dispersed heterogeneous active sites able to compete with well‐established homogeneous mineral and organocatalysts. The available literature data grouped based on the nature of active sites. Whenever possible, the comparison of the activity of MOFs with other heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts is provided to illustrate the possible benefits of MOFs compared to other catalysts. The concluding section provides our views and future developments in this field.

Abstract:Friedel–Crafts benzylation/alkylation using benzylic, tertiary, and homobenzylic alcohols; aryl aldehydes, aryl ketones, and the highly challenging aryl carboxylic acids and esters as proelectrophiles has been achieved using borane-ammonia and TiCl 4 , greatly broadening the scope of useable substrates. Incorporation of deactivated aromatic proelectrophiles and specificity for substitution at the benzylic position are demonstrated in the synthesis of various di- and triarylalkane products. Dual protocols allow for the use of standard nucleophilic solvents (benzene, toluene, etc. ) or for stoichiometric addition of more valuable nucleophiles including furans, thiophenes, and benzodioxoles.
