Abstract:The practical and diversified functionalization of ubiquitous C(sp3)–H bonds is an economically attractive yet chemically challenging approach to build molecular complexity from abundant chemical raw materials. Herein, we have identified a very robust and practical FeCl3/HCl photocatalytic system that enables greatly efficient C–H alkylation, oxidation, chlorination, fluorination, amination, alkynylation, and sulfonylation with total turnover number (TON) of up to 9,900. The aliphatic C–H activation is mediated by chlorine radical, in situ generated from a photoactive tetrahedral [FeIIICl4]− via ligand-to-metal charge transfer excitation, and the use of HCl as co-catalyst significantly improves the total TON by more than one order of magnitude.

Abstract:ZnF2, CdF2, and CuF2 have been adsorbed onto the surface of montmorillonite K10, and the infrared and 19F, 27Al, and 29Si MAS NMR spectra of the resulting reagents over a range of loadings and activation temperatures have been obtained. CuF2 was observed to attack the SiO2 layer and form the complex CuSiF6, ZnF2 tends to attack the aluminium oxide layer, in which Zn isomorphously replaces Al, and forms AlF3 and AlF4− complexes. The spectroscopic evidence rules out the formation of any Al–F and (or) Si–F species as CdF2 is adsorbed on the surface of montmorillonite K10. The reactivity of MF2–K10 reagents towards the Friedel–Crafts reaction of benzene with benzyl chloride varies from one reagent to another. ZnF2–K10 was observed to be the most reactive and CuF2 was the least reactive.

Abstract:Chloroaluminate ionic liquid bound on magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@O2Si[PrMIM]Cl·AlCl3) was prepared and used as a heterogenous Lewis acidic catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts sulfonylation of aromatic compounds with sulfonyl chlorides or p-toluenesulfonic anhydride. The catalyst’s stability, efficiency, easy recovery, and high recyclability without considerable loss of catalytic capability after four recycles were evidence of its advantages. Furthermore, the stoichiometry, wide substrate scope, short reaction time, high yield of sulfones, and solvent-free reaction condition also made this procedure practical, ecofriendly, and economical.

Abstract:In this study, a novel La(III)-based two-dimensional (2D) metal-organic framework, [La2/3 (qptca)1/2 ] (referred to as SLX-2), from LaCl3 and 1,1' : 4',1'' : 4'',1''' : 4''',1''''-quinquephenyl]-2,2'',2'''',5''-tetracarboxylic acid (H4 qptca) was synthesized by conventional solvothermal method and thoroughly characterized by using X-ray single-crystal diffraction, powder X-ray diffraction, and thermogravimetric analyses. The 2D SLX-2 features a unique lanthanum center exposed to the skeleton and was used as an efficient Lewis acid catalyst for the Friedel-Crafts alkylation of indole and pyrrole with β-nitrostyrene along with a wide substrate scope, giving the desired products in good-to-high yields under the optimal reaction conditions. Furthermore, the catalyst was used for twenty cycles, with nearly no effect on its activity, and the reaction was heterogeneous in nature. Moreover, compared to the previous hydrogen-bond-donating MOF catalysts for such alkylation reactions, SLX-2 showed an excellent stability toward harsh acidic and basic environment, and gave comparable catalytic activities.

Abstract:Friedel‐Crafts alkylation reaction is one of the well‐known C‐C bonds forming reactions in organic chemistry catalyzed by homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Aluminosilicates and zeolites have been extensively employed as heterogeneous catalysts between Lewis and Bronsted acids as active sites for this reaction. In this line, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have also been receiving considerable attention for this reaction in the last two decades. Thus, this review aims to present the catalytic performance of MOFs with Lewis acid/Bronsted acid sites or hydrogen bonding donor sites as potential catalysts to promote the widely employed Friedel‐Crafts alkylation to form C‐C bonds between arenes and electron poor olefins, alcohols, or alkyl bromides. Such acid active sites are present either at the organic linkers or inorganic clusters of the crystalline porous framework, resulting in well‐dispersed heterogeneous active sites able to compete with well‐established homogeneous mineral and organocatalysts. The available literature data grouped based on the nature of active sites. Whenever possible, the comparison of the activity of MOFs with other heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts is provided to illustrate the possible benefits of MOFs compared to other catalysts. The concluding section provides our views and future developments in this field.

Abstract:The development of general and more sustainable heterogeneous catalytic processes for Friedel-Crafts (FC) alkylation reactions is a key objective of interest for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals and commodity chemicals. Sustainable heterogeneous catalysis for the typical FC alkylation of an easily accessible carbonyl electrophile and arenes or with two different arene nucleophiles in one-pot is a prime challenge. Herein, we present a resolution to these issues through the design and utilization of a mesoporous silica catalyst that has been functionalized with sulfonic acid. For the synthesis of sulfonic acid-functionalized mesoporous silica (MSN-SO3H), thiol-functionalized mesoporous silica was first synthesized by the co-condensation method, followed by oxidation of the thiol functionality to the sulfonic acid group. Sulfonation of mesoporous silica was confirmed by 13C CP MAS NMR spectroscopy. Further, the devised heterogeneous catalysis using MSN-SO3H has been successfully employed in the construction of diverse polyalkanes including various bioactive molecules, viz arundine, tatarinoid-C, and late-stage functionalization of natural products like menthol and Eugenol. Further, we have utilized this sustainable technique to facilitate the formation of unsymmetrical C-S bonds in a one-pot fashion. In addition, the catalyst was successfully recovered and recycled for eight cycles, demonstrating the high sustainability and cost-effectiveness of this protocol for both academic and industrial applications.

Abstract:Friedel–Crafts alkylation of benzene with linear chain olefin (C10–C14), which is an important reaction of synthetic detergent, was studied via different catalysts of aluminum impregnated silica molecular sieves. AlCl3 was immobilized on silica molecular sieves with different channel structures, hexagonal packing channels network (SBA-15, MCM-41), and disordered channel network (SiO2, SiO2-Gel) by impregnation. XRD and N2 adsorption–desorption isotherms confirmed that the specific mesoporous structures were maintained for order channel network catalyst after impregnation. Catalytic activities were investigated under different conditions. The influences of channel structure were discussed. The results showed that catalyst based on mesoporous like SBA-15 had the highest catalytic activities and 2-LAB selectivity compared with other catalysts in this work. The highest 2-LAB selectivity was nearly 50% when 1-dodecene conversion was nearly 100%. At low 1-dodecene conversion or higher benzene/1-dodecene molar ratio, 2-LAB selectivity was nearly 60%.

Abstract:Supported reagents have been widely used in organic synthesis for some 25 years and their importance is likely to increase as a result of new environmental legislation and the drive towards clean technology. While many supported reagents are stoichiometric in reactions the successful development of genuinely catalytic materials greatly enhances their value especially in liquid phase, typically fine chemical syntheses. Achieving an understanding of the nature of these fascinating materials is also an important aspect of their development and is essential if their true potential is to be realised. Solid acids are the most widely studied of supported reagents and their use as more environmentally acceptable replacements for conventional Bronsted and Lewis acids is likely to become increasingly important. Clayzic is a good example of an environmentally friendly catalyst with particular value as an alternative to the hazardous reagent aluminium chloride in Friedel-Crafts reactions. The structure and properties of this catalyst are, however, poorly understood. X-Ray diffraction studies show that thermal treatment of either clayzic or its base material K10 results in the loss of any montmorillonite crystallinity that remained after the acid treatment of tonsil 13 used to form K10. Thermal treatment of clayzic also results in a steady increase in the surface area of the material. While this is also consistent with structural changes the increase is also likely to be partly due to the dehydration allowing the non-polar adsorbate to enter more of the polar regions of the material. These polar regions can be identified as mesopores created by the acid treatment of the clay and in which the zinc ions largely reside. Spectroscopic titration of the acid sites in clayzic show these to be largely Lewis acid in character. Thus clayzic owes its remarkable Friedel-Crafts activity to the presence of high local concentrations of zinc ions in structural mesopores. Relative reaction rates for the clayzic catalysed benzylation of alkylbenzenes also reveal the importance of these highly polar mesopores. Considerable rate enhancements can be achieved by thermally activating the catalyst and this can be largely attributed to the dehydration of the catalyst enabling better partitioning of the alkylbenzenes into the mesopores. Clayzic can be considered as being a large pore molecular sieve but where the sieving of molecules is controlled more by molecular polarities/polarisibilities than by molecular shape.
A Study into the Use of Microwaves and Solid Acid Catalysts for Friedel-Crafts Acetylations

Abstract:A range of solid acids has been used for the acetylation of methyl salicylate by acetyl chloride/acetic anhydride. A comparison between microwave and traditional heating has been also been made. By comparing aluminium chloride, sulfated zirconia, copper triflate on silica, heteropoly tungstic acid on silica and iron(III) chloride on clay (clayfec) a wide ranging comparison has been made and it has been discovered that solid acids can offer truly catalytic acetylations of relatively complex substrates albeit in lower yields than their traditional alternatives such as aluminium chloride. Microwave heating enables lower by-product formation and more importantly reaction times in the order of minutes as opposed to hours required by conventional means.

Abstract:Nucleophilic addition of sulfonamides and carboxamides to simple alkenes proceeded smoothly using a proton-exchanged montmorillonite catalyst. The spent catalyst was recovered easily from the reaction mixture and was reusable at least five times without any loss of activity. The unique acidity of the proton-exchanged montmorillonite (H-mont) catalyst was found to be applicable to additional reactions: substitution of hydroxyl groups of alcohols with amides and anilines.

Abstract:An unprecedented three-dimensional supramolecular MOF, namely [Zn3(bpy)3 (SO4)4]·(Me2NH2)2·DMF·9H2O (1, where bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide), has been efficaciously synthesized under the solvothermal reaction. A single-crystal structure determination showed that the wavelike [Zn3(bpy)(SO4)4] layers are pillared by pairs of bpy ligands to give a new 4,6-connected binodal self-penetrated network with overall (4264)(42687382) topology. 1 also has been fully identified characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, gas adsorption properties and so on. In addition, a new Cu(II)-MOF (cat1) was further prepared by postsynthetic exchange (PSE) synthetic approach based on compound 1, which is proved to be an active catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts reaction of indole with β-nitrostyrenes. The result from this work provides a new attempt to describe the crystallization of inorganic sulfate anion link to the organic functional group, and the functionalization-induced MOF gain insights for designing new functional MOF.

Abstract:A cost-effective and environmentally compliance FeCl3·6H2O catalyzed Friedel-Crafts alkylation of cyclic ketene dithioacetals with alcohols was developed. The reaction was efficient in the presence of catalyst loading as low as 5%(molar fraction) in CH2Cl2 solvent at room temperature or under reflux conditions. A wide range of alkylated ketene dithioacetals were synthesized in excellent yields.

Abstract:Alkyl groups are one of the most widely used groups in organic synthesis. Here, a a series of thianthrenium salts have been synthesized that act as reliable alkylation reagents and readily engage in copper-catalyzed Sonogashira reactions to build C(sp(3))-C(sp) bonds under mild photochemical conditions. Diverse alkyl thianthrenium salts, including methyl and disubstituted thianthrenium salts, are employed with great functional breadth, since sensitive Cl, Br, and I atoms, which are poorly tolerated in conventional approaches, are compatible. The generality of the developed alkyl reagents has also been demonstrated in copper-catalyzed Kumada reactions.

Abstract:Efficient copper-catalyzed 1,2-difunctionalization of alkenes with commercially available BrCH2Cl as a chloromethylating source was carried out, in which mild conditions, high reactivity, excellent functional-group tolerance, and late-stage modification of a bioactive molecule are demonstrated. This strategy offers a solution for the diverse syntheses of nitrogen-containing terminal alkyl chlorides, a common synthetic handle that is promising for multiple derivatizations. Mechanistic studies indicate that a chloromethyl radical is involved in the catalytic cycle.

Abstract:The Friedel-Crafts reaction of alkalinous substrates is challenging because of the coordination between amines and traditional acid catalysts. Based on theoretical research, we designed a catalytic process for the Friedel-Crafts reactions ofN,N-dialkylanilines in the presence of CAAC-CuCl [CAAC = cyclic(alkyl)(amino)carbene] and KB(C6F5)(4). Experimental results show that the catalytic system is suitable for a series ofN,N-dialkylanilines and styrenes with good to excellent yields ofpara-selectivity products. The results are comparable to those obtained in carbene-gold catalyzed processes.
