Abstract:The synthesis of highly acidic metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted significant research interest in recent years. We report here the design of a strongly Lewis acidic MOF, ZrOTf-BTC, through two-step transformation of MOF-808 (Zr-BTC) secondary building units (SBUs). Zr-BTC was first treated with 1 M hydrochloric acid solution to afford ZrOH-BTC by replacing each bridging formate group with a pair of hydroxide and water groups. The resultant ZrOH-BTC was further treated with trimethylsilyl triflate (Me3SiOTf) to afford ZrOTf-BTC by taking advantage of the oxophilicity of the Me3Si group. Electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of Zr-bound superoxide and fluorescence spectra of Zr-bound N-methylacridone provided a quantitative measurement of Lewis acidity of ZrOTf-BTC with an energy splitting (Delta E) of 0.99 eV between the pi(x)* and pi(y)* orbitals, which is competitive to the homogeneous benchmark Sc(OTf)(3). ZrOTf-BTC was shown to be a highly active solid Lewis acid catalyst for a broad range of important organic transformations under mild conditions, including Diels-Alder reaction, epoxide ring-opening reaction, Friedel-Crafts acylation, and alkene hydroalkoxylation reaction. The MOF catalyst outperformed Sc(OTf)(3) in terms of both catalytic activity and catalyst lifetime. Moreover, we developed a ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 composite as an efficient solid Lewis acid catalyst for continuous flow catalysis. The Zr centers in ZrOTfBTC@SiO2 feature identical coordination environment to ZrOTf-BTC based on spectroscopic evidence. ZrOTf-BTC@SiO2 displayed exceptionally high turnover numbers (TONs) of 1700 for Diels-Alder reaction, 2700 for epoxide ring-opening reaction, and 326 for Friedel-Crafts acylation under flow conditions. We have thus created strongly Lewis acidic sites in MOFs via triflation and constructed the MOF@SiO2 composite for continuous flow catalysis of important organic transformations.

Abstract:We report the quantitative conversion of [MIV6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4Cl12]6- nodes in the MCl2-BTC metal-organic framework into the [MIII6(μ3-O)4(μ3-ONa)4H6]6- nodes in MIIIH-BTC (M = Zr, Hf; BTC is 1,3,5-benzenetricarboxylate) via bimetallic reductive elimination of H2 from putative [MIV6(μ3-O)4(μ3-OH)4H12]6- nodes. The coordinatively unsaturated MIIIH centers in MIIIH-BTC are highly active and selective for 1,4-dearomative hydroboration and hydrosilylation of pyridines and quinolines. This work demonstrated the potential of secondary building unit transformation in generating electronically unique and homogeneously inaccessible single-site solid catalysts for organic synthesis.

Abstract:An unprecedented three-dimensional supramolecular MOF, namely [Zn3(bpy)3 (SO4)4]·(Me2NH2)2·DMF·9H2O (1, where bpy = 4,4'-bipyridine, DMF = N,N′-dimethylformamide), has been efficaciously synthesized under the solvothermal reaction. A single-crystal structure determination showed that the wavelike [Zn3(bpy)(SO4)4] layers are pillared by pairs of bpy ligands to give a new 4,6-connected binodal self-penetrated network with overall (4264)(42687382) topology. 1 also has been fully identified characterized by thermogravimetric analysis, gas adsorption properties and so on. In addition, a new Cu(II)-MOF (cat1) was further prepared by postsynthetic exchange (PSE) synthetic approach based on compound 1, which is proved to be an active catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts reaction of indole with β-nitrostyrenes. The result from this work provides a new attempt to describe the crystallization of inorganic sulfate anion link to the organic functional group, and the functionalization-induced MOF gain insights for designing new functional MOF.

Abstract:A novel three-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF) {[In3(NIPH)(3) (HNIPH)(OH)(2)].4H(2)O}(n) (1) (H2NIPH = 5-nitroisophthalic acid) with one-dimensional channels was synthesized and structurally characterized. Importantly, it demonstrates excellent catalytic activity for the Strecker reactions of two or three components under mild conditions. Moreover, the catalytic recycling of 1 as a representative example was explored. It can be easily separated and reused for no less than five runs with more than 80% conversion yield in catalytic ability.

Abstract:The novel multi-SO 3 H functionalized strong Brønsted acidic ionic liquid has been prepared and its catalytic activities were investigated through the acetalization. The results showed that the novel catalyst was very efficient for the reaction with the average yield over 90% under solvent-free condition at room temperature. Operational simplicity, without need of any solvent, a small amount of usage, low cost of the catalyst used, high yields, applicability to large-scale reactions and reusability are the key features of this methodology. The novel catalyst also has great potential for the green process.

Abstract:Recent research underscores the significance of metal-organic frameworks as catalysts, owing to their structural adaptability, substantial surface areas, adjustable pore dimensions, and customizable catalytic sites. Using Friedländer synthesis, we evaluated the catalytic potential of three synthesized metal-organic framework materials, MIL-53(Al), MIL-101(Cr), and MOF-5(Zn), in quinoline derivative synthesis. MIL-53(Al) outperformed MIL-101(Cr) and MOF-5(Zn), highlighting the vital role of Lewis acidic sites (Al 3+ ) in quinoline production. Potentiometric titration analyses revealed MIL-53(Al)'s superior Lewis acid strength. Reaction optimization involved varying temperatures, catalyst loading, reaction duration, and solvents. MIL-53(Al) exhibited four-cycle recyclability. Mechanistic insights underscored Lewis acid strength and the significance of sites. The Al-based catalyst proficiently facilitated Friedlander synthesis, yielding enhanced conversion and considerable physiologically active quinoline yields. The findings offer insights into diverse catalytic strategies and demonstrate the adaptability of metal-organic framework materials in varied chemical reactions.

Abstract:Friedel‐Crafts alkylation reaction is one of the well‐known C‐C bonds forming reactions in organic chemistry catalyzed by homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Aluminosilicates and zeolites have been extensively employed as heterogeneous catalysts between Lewis and Bronsted acids as active sites for this reaction. In this line, metal organic frameworks (MOFs) have also been receiving considerable attention for this reaction in the last two decades. Thus, this review aims to present the catalytic performance of MOFs with Lewis acid/Bronsted acid sites or hydrogen bonding donor sites as potential catalysts to promote the widely employed Friedel‐Crafts alkylation to form C‐C bonds between arenes and electron poor olefins, alcohols, or alkyl bromides. Such acid active sites are present either at the organic linkers or inorganic clusters of the crystalline porous framework, resulting in well‐dispersed heterogeneous active sites able to compete with well‐established homogeneous mineral and organocatalysts. The available literature data grouped based on the nature of active sites. Whenever possible, the comparison of the activity of MOFs with other heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysts is provided to illustrate the possible benefits of MOFs compared to other catalysts. The concluding section provides our views and future developments in this field.

Abstract:In this research, a new heterogeneous catalyst is fabricated through covalent modification of iron-based metal–organic framework with ionic liquid. In more detail, using 2-aminoterephthalic acid and iron (III) chloride hexahydrate, amino-functionalized metal–organic framework has been synthesized and then reacted with 2,4,6-trichloro-1,3,5-triazine and 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane successively to furnish ionic liquid on metal–organic framework. The as-prepared catalyst was characterized by FTIR, TGA, BET, SEM/EDS, XRD and elemental mapping analysis and then employed for catalyzing synthesis of pyrano [2,3‐d]pyrimidines (with yields of 80–100%) from one-pot three-component reaction of aldehydes, barbituric acid and malononitrile in aqueous media. The catalytic test inferred high catalytic activity of the catalyst, superior to that of IL and metal–organic framework. Furthermore, the catalyst could be recovered and recycled for five reaction runs with preserving its morphology.Graphic abstract

Abstract:We report here the synthesis of a robust and highly porous Fe-phenanthroline-based metal-organic framework (MOF) and its application in catalyzing challenging inter-and intramolecular C-H amination reactions. For the intermolecular amination reactions, a FeBr2-metalated MOF selectively functionalized secondary benzylic and allylic C-H bonds. The intramolecular amination reactions utilizing organic azides as the nitrene source required the reduction of the FeBr2-metalated MOF with NaBHEt3 to generate the active catalyst. For both reactions, Fe or Zr leaching was less than 0.1%, and MOFs could be recycled and reused with no loss in catalytic activity. Furthermore, MOF catalysts were significantly more active than the corresponding homogeneous analogs. This work demonstrates the great potential of MOFs in generating highly active, recyclable, and reusable earth abundant metal catalysts for challenging organic transformations.

Abstract:The Lewis acidity of metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) has attracted much research interest in recent years. We report here the development of two quantitative methods for determining the Lewis acidity of MOFs-based on electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy of MOF-bound superoxide (O2•-) and fluorescence spectroscopy of MOF-bound N-methylacridone (NMA)-and a simple strategy that significantly enhances MOF Lewis acidity through ligand perfluorination. Two new perfluorinated MOFs, Zr6-fBDC and Zr6-fBPDC, where H2fBDC is 2,3,5,6-tetrafluoro-1,4-benzenedicarboxylic acid and H2fBPDC is 2,2',3,3',5,5',6,6'-octafluoro-4,4'-biphenyldicarboxylic acid, were shown to be significantly more Lewis acidic than nonsubstituted UiO-66 and UiO-67 as well as the nitrated MOFs Zr6-BDC-NO2 and Zr6-BPDC-(NO2)2. Zr6-fBDC was shown to be a highly active single-site solid Lewis acid catalyst for Diels-Alder and arene C-H iodination reactions. Thus, this work establishes the important role of ligand perfluorination in enhancing MOF Lewis acidity and the potential of designing highly Lewis acidic MOFs for fine chemical synthesis.

Abstract:Al‐based MOF catalyst with a typical spatial distance of Lewis and Brønsted acid active sites can efficiently catalyse Friedländer synthesis with high yields of physiologically active quinoline. We report on the use of heterogeneous metal organic framework (MOF) catalysts for the Friedländer synthesis of 2‐aminoaryl ketone with α‐methylene carbonyl derivatives, a versatile and widely used method for the synthesis of quinoline derivatives. The importance of the Lewis and Brønsted acid sites and their spatial proximity have been explored. Postsynthetic modifications were made to introduce the Brønsted −SO3H acid sites in the pristine MIL‐53(Al). Two modifications were carried out, resulting in two different MOFs: MIL‐53(Al)−NH−(CH2)3−SO3H, in which there is a significant spatial distance between the Lewis and Brønsted sites, and MIL‐53(Al)−SO3H, where the two sites are in close proximity. The availability of sulfonic acid groups has a significant impact on their catalytic performance. The sulfonated MIL‐53(Al) material exhibited a high yield of quinoline derivatives under solventless and mild reaction conditions, with a wide substrate scope and good reusability. Mechanistic studies revealed that the dual acidic sites of the catalysts play an important role in the reaction mechanism.

Abstract:H-bonding has achieved massive advancements by utilizing an H-bond donor (HBD) to interact with the electron-rich site of the substrate, and an H-bond acceptor (HBA) to coordinate with the electron-deficient site. Rapid transformation is often correlated with the acidity of HBD, namely the degree of charge deficiency of the hydrogen proton. In addition, the positive cations were employed to enhance the HBD; the electron-withdrawing groups were also a dissimilar approach for increasing the capability of the H-bond donor. We first introduced the H-bonding organic ion pair tris(phenylamino)cyclopropenium (TPAC·Cl) into the Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indoles with nitroalkenes, which was implemented via vicinal positive charges on the cyclopropenium core. The counter ion chloride anion became a potential HBA to activate the electron-deficient part of the substrate. X-ray analyses of a single crystal of TPAC·Cl described the 3D architecture and the delocalized cationic charge in the solid state. The aromatic cyclopropenium endowed the N–H moieties with the ability of the H-bond donor to activate the nitroalkene; meanwhile, the chloride anion acted as the H-bond acceptor to activate the indole. The amino-cyclopropenium-offered HBD and HBA displayed cooperative organocatalysis in the Friedel–Crafts alkylation of indole with nitroalkene. A new class of hydrogen bonding catalysis and a working mechanism were proposed.

Abstract:Chloroaluminate ionic liquid bound on magnetic nanoparticles (Fe3O4@O2Si[PrMIM]Cl·AlCl3) was prepared and used as a heterogenous Lewis acidic catalyst for the Friedel–Crafts sulfonylation of aromatic compounds with sulfonyl chlorides or p-toluenesulfonic anhydride. The catalyst’s stability, efficiency, easy recovery, and high recyclability without considerable loss of catalytic capability after four recycles were evidence of its advantages. Furthermore, the stoichiometry, wide substrate scope, short reaction time, high yield of sulfones, and solvent-free reaction condition also made this procedure practical, ecofriendly, and economical.

Abstract:We have synthesized a new 3D Co(Ⅱ) based metal-organic framework [Co(pytpy)(AIP)·H2O]n(1)(C2/c)(pytpy = 4'-(4-pyridyl)-4,2':6′,4″-terpyridine,AIP = 5-aminoisophthalic acid) by solvothermal method. Its crystal structure was determined with single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) techniques. And then Imidazole groups were introduced into 1 by schiff base post-synthetic reaction to make a lewis base sites rich MOF-based catalyst (2). X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Fourier Transform Infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) was obtained to determined the content and structure of 2. The post-synthetic MOF-based catalyst showed an excellent performance in Knoevenagel Condensation Reaction of furfural. Moreover, we also tested the catalytic performance for others homologues of furfural and malononitrile. The experimental results are also satisfactory.

Abstract:In this work, the metallo Schiff base-functionalized metal–organic framework was prepared by post-synthetic method and used as an electron-deficient catalyst for the alcoholysis of epoxides. In this manner, the aminated MIL-101 was modified with 2-pyridine carboxaldehyde and then the prepared Schiff base reacted with RuCl3. This new catalyst, MIL-101–NH2–PC–Ru, was characterized by Fourier transform infrared, UV–Vis spectroscopic techniques, X-ray diffraction, BET, inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectroscopy and field-emission scanning electron microscopy. In the presence of this heterogeneous catalyst, ring opening of epoxides was performed under mild condition to show the significant ability and successful applications of Lewis acid containing catalysts in corporation with metal–organic frameworks. The reusability of the catalyst was also investigated. No noticeable decrease in the catalytic activity was found after four consecutive times.

Abstract:This work reports aromatic ketones production by a solid acid made of divinylbenzene-vinylimidazole modified with 1,3-propanesultone and trifluoromethanesulfonate. The catalyst exhibited excellent conversion and selectivity for anisole to p-methoxyacetophenone with the acylating agent acetic anhydride.
