Abstract:An efficient Pd(II)-catalyzed synthesis of benzyl benzoates via direct functionalization of benzyl C(sp(3))-H bonds was developed. The method features a broad substrate scope. This method features high tolerance of functional groups, mild reaction condition, and high chemoselective when there are multiple active C(sp(3))-H bonds. A plausible oxidative coupling mechanism was proposed on the basis of mechanistic studies.

Abstract:Direct benzylation of carboxylic acids with toluene has been developed via palladium-catalyzed C-H acyloxylation under 1 atm of oxygen. Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed C-H functionalization of acyldiazomethanes with aryl iodides has been developed. This reaction is featured by the retention of the diazo functionality in the transformation, thus constituting a novel method for the introduction of diazo functionality to organic molecules. Consistent with the experimental results, the density functional theory (DFT) calculation indicates that the formation of Pd-carbene species in the catalytic cycle through dinitrogen extrusion from the palladium ethyl diazoacetate (Pd-EDA) complex is less favorable. The reaction instead proceeds through Ag2CO3 assisted deprotonation and subsequently reductive elimination to afford the products with diazo functionality remained. This C-H functionalization transformation can be further combined with the recently evolved palladium-catalyzed cross-coupling reaction of diazo compounds with aryl iodides to develop a tandem coupling process for the synthesis of α,α-diaryl esters. DFT calculation supports the involvement of Pd-carbene as reactive intermediate in the catalytic cycle, which goes through facile carbene migratory insertion with a low energy barrier (3.8 kcal/mol).

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed aerobic multicomponent benzannulation of Hantzsch reactants, i.e., amines, aldehydes, and β-dicarbonyls, has been developed. Hence, a viable entry to highly functionalized anilines has been accessed under solvent-free neat conditions. Mechanistically, the palladium chelating with an imine intermediate was proposed to be the key for this novel carbocyclization.

Abstract:A strategy for the synthesis of multisubstituted propenylbenzenes using benzyl chlorides as starting materials is described. The palladium-catalyzed allylative dearomatization and the subsequent Wagner-Meerwein rearrangement as well as the olefin isomerization proceeded smoothly under mild conditions to produce propenylation products in good yields with high regioselectivity. Control experiments and cyclic voltammetry analysis suggest that Bu3SnCl, a by-product generated in the first step of allylative dearomatization, plays an essential role in the third step of olefin isomerization in the presence of a Brønsted acid.

Abstract:It is well known that benzyl esters are prevalent functional groups in medicinal agents and natural products. The traditional methods of preparing benzyl esters by utilizing benzyl alcohols/bromides/chlorides with carboxylic acids as coupling partners have been reported over the decades (Scheme 1a). Furthermore, Khan's group proposed benzyl esters can also be obtained by the reaction of aromatic carboxylic acids with substituted toluenes in the presence of NaBrO3/NaHSO3 in early 2003. However, some approaches have disadvantages of long reaction time or sensitivity to the environment. With increasing interest in transition metal-catalyzed C–H bonds activation to construct C–O bonds, several types of transition metals, including Cu, Pd, Pt and Rh have been recently revealed admirable catalytic activity in esterication. Among them, the approach of Pd-catalyzed benzylation of toluene with carboxylic acids under 1 atm of oxygen has been disclosed by Zhang's group (Scheme 1b). It did not need to be pre-functionalized and provided a more facile, atom-economic method to prepare benzyl esters. Despite their obvious potential application, these transition metal-catalyzed C–H bond activation methods suffered from a few drawbacks such as expense and toxicity of transition metals, which limit their practicability. Hence, the development of a facile and practical approach for constructing benzyl esters under metal-free conditions is extremely desirable.

Abstract:Aromatic functionalizations are of current interest and importance in organic chemistry, recent transition‐metal catalyzed reactions can transform inert C–H bond into C–X (X = C, O, N, etc.) bonds, greatly enriching aromatic chemistry and related fields. Some well known palladium–containing intermediates such as palladacycles and allylpalladium intermediates play an important role in organic conversions. Similar with allyl group, benzyl group also possesses the capability of stabilizing palladium through η3‐binding. In the process of the formation of benzyl palladium intermediate, there is a transition state of dearomatization. Therefore, it is a challenging and meaningful research topic to seize these aromatic destruction intermediates, realize selective functionalization reaction on aromatic ring via them, and inhibit the formation of traditional benzylated products. Herein, we summarized the recent efforts on expanding the synthetic utility, as well as exploring the mechanism in aromatic functionalization via reactive benzyl palladium intermediates. We envision that the transformation via benzyl palladium intermediates will help promote the development in the field of palladium–catalyzed aromatic regioselective functionalization.

Abstract:Herein, a reaction in which the benzyl C-H bonds of alkylarenes are directly esterified by carboxylic acids to produce benzyl esters in high yields is reported. This reaction is catalyzed by Pd nanoparticles (NPs) on N-doped carbon (CN) composites based on a carbonizing Al-MIL-101(NH2) material, and no oxidants or hydrogen acceptors are required. Use of o-alkylbenzoic acids as substrates leads to phthalides, whereas with carboxylic acids and alkylarenes as the feedstock, the reaction produces the benzyl esters. These reactions that use readily available alkylarenes instead of benzyl halides or benzyl alcohols as raw materials for one-step synthesis of benzyl esters without oxidants are inherently atom- and step-efficient. The CN composites and the CN-supported Pd NP catalysts were prepared and are well characterized. The proposed mechanism involves dehydrogenation of both the carboxylic groups and the benzylic groups and the transformation of benzylic C-H bond into the C-O bond via hydrogen abstraction from the benzylic group through an organopalladium intermediate. The kinetic isotope effect (kH/kD = 2.77) indicated that C(sp3)-H bond cleavage of the alkane aromatics is the rate-determining step.
