Abstract:A direct arylation to furnish diarylmethanes from benzyl alcohols was realized through Pd(PPh3)(4)-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura coupling via benzylic C-O activation in the absence of any additives. The arylation is compatible with various functional groups. This development provides an atom-and step-economic way to approach a diarylmethane scaffold under mild and environmentally benign conditions.

Abstract:A highly regio- and stereoselctive palladium-catalyzed domino reaction of functionalized aryl allyl ethers has been developed. Various aryl allyl ethers derived from the phosphine-catalyzed addition of electron-deficient allenes with phenol are found to be efficient substrates for the synthesis of 2-substituted 2,3-dihydrobenzofurans and indolines. It is the first example of aryl allyl ether used as an ideal and practical precursor of hard to get functionalized 1,3-butadiene for the heterocyclic compound synthesis.

Abstract:A tandem coupling-ketooxygenation reaction of readily accessible enediyne-carboxylic compounds with inner alkynes has been developed that utilizes the PdCl2/CuBr2 catalytic system under an O2 atmosphere and assembles a class of isoindolinones and o-acylbenzoic acids. The two oxygen atoms are regioselectively incorporated into enediyne units at the 1- and 6-positions from atmospheric molecular oxygen and H2O, respectively, during the present process. This study uncovered a formal [4C + 2C] benzannulation-diketonization of enediynes and alkynes via a coupling and decoupling strategy.

Abstract:Palladium-catalyzed Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling or aryl halides is widely employed in the synthesis of many important molecules in synthetic chemistry, including pharmaceuticals, polymers and functional materials. Herein, we disclose the first palladium-catalyzed decarbonylative Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of amides for the synthesis of biaryls through the selective activation of the N-C(O) bond of amides. This new method relies on the precise sequence engineering of the catalytic cycle, wherein decarbonylation occurs prior to the transmetallation step. The reaction is compatible with a wide range of boronic acids and amides, providing valuable biaryls in high yields (>60 examples). DFT studies support a mechanism involving oxidative addition, decarbonylation and transmetallation and provide insight into high N-C(O) bond activation selectivity. Most crucially, the reaction establishes the use of palladium catalysis in the biaryl Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling of the amide bond and should enable the design of a wide variety of cross-coupling methods in which palladium rivals the traditional biaryl synthesis from aryl halides and pseudohalides.

Abstract:Conditions for the regioselective palladium-catalyzed direct C2-arylation and C2,C3-diarylation of Methoxalen are described. The use of benzenesulfonyl chlorides as the coupling partner allowed control of the regioselectivity of the arylation in favor of the C2 carbon of Methoxalen. This method tolerates a variety of substituents on the benzenesulfonyl chloride derivative. Notably, 2-, 3-, and 4-bromobenzene-sulfonyl chlorides and 4-iodobenzenesulfonyl chloride were coupled with Methoxalen without cleavage of the C-Br or C-I bonds. Conversely, the use of an excess amount of aryl bromides as the aryl source provides access to C2,C3-diarlyated Methoxalenes. (C) 2019 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract:Herein, we report the synthesis of 1,1-diarylmethanes via palladium-catalyzed benzylic C(sp3)-O arylation of benzyl alcohol derivatives. An efficient, straightforward approach to synthesizing Pd(0)(xantphos)2 was developed through in situ reduction of Pd(II) to Pd(0) with the bidentate tertiary phosphine xantphos, which proved to be a highly active precatalyst in the Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reaction of benzyl heteroaryl ethers.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed reductive coupling between N-tosylhydrazones and aryl bromides has been developed. The reaction provides an efficient method for the synthesis of diarylmethanes and triarylmethanes via the formation of C(sp(2))-C(sp(3)) single bonds. This new methodology for the synthesis of diarylmethanes and triarylmethanes is featured by the ready availability of the starting materials, mild reaction conditions, and the tolerance of wide range of functional groups. The reaction follows a pathway including palladium carbene formation, migratory insertion, and reduction of the alkylpalladium(II) intermediate.

Abstract:A palladium-catalyzed Suzuki cross-coupling of benzyl ammonium triflates via activation of a Csp 3 –N bond to construct a Csp 3 –Csp 2 bond is described. Various boronic acids can be coupled with a range of benzylamine-derived quaternary ammonium salts in 1:1 molar ratio by the bench-stable N -heterocyclic carbene palladium complex, SIPr-PdCl 2 -Py to afford diarylmethane derivatives. This reaction exhibits a wide substrate scope and functional group tolerance. Direct arylation of benzylamine in a one-pot process and the gram-scale reaction can be performed successfully.

Abstract:A direct transformation of non-preactivated benzyl alcohols to benzyl stannanes and benzyl silanes was realized through Pd-catalyzed C(sp3)-O activation process. By using versatile tin and silicon sources, these reactions exhibit a broad substrate scope and a high efficiency under mild conditions, affording functionalized benzyl and allylic stannanes and benzylsilanes with high yields. The successful implementation of gram-scale stannylation/silylation as well as the one-pot Stille coupling reaction demonstrates the potential application of this method in organic synthesis. Both experimental and theoretical investigations reveal the mechanistic details of this reaction.

Abstract:Direct functionalization of the benzylic C-H bond of diarylmethanes is an important strategy for the synthesis of diarylmethine-containing compounds. However, the methods developed to date for this purpose require a stoichiometric amount (usually more) of either a strong base or an oxidant. Reported here is the first catalytic benzylic C-H bond addition of diarylmethanes to styrenes and conjugated dienes. A potassium zincate complex, generated from potassium benzyl and zinc amide, acts as a catalyst and displays good activity and chemoselectivity. Considering the atom economy of the reaction and the ready availability of the catalyst, this reaction constitutes a practical, efficient method for diarylalkane synthesis.

Abstract:Direct annulation of benzoic acids with phenols via palladium-catalyzed oxidative coupling is reported. Readily available and inexpensive starting materials were used in this novel method to synthesize highly valuable and useful dibenzopyranone scaffolds. Broad substrate scope and simple operation make this method potentially practical. Preliminary mechanistic studies were conducted to understand this chemistry and inspire new designs of oxidative coupling of different functionalized arenes.

Abstract:Transition metal-catalyzed cycloaromatization reactions of diarylalkynes offer a swift and versatile approach to synthesizing a wide array of polycyclic aromatic compounds. However, the specific mechanism of Pd-catalyzed C–H/C–H aromative carbonylation of diarylalkynes, particularly those bearing adjacent functional groups, remains a relatively unexplored area. Herein, we present a palladium-catalyzed C–H/C–H aromative carbonylation of diarylalkynes, which proceeds through an exclusive 6- endo - dig carbocyclization pathway, followed by the incorporation of CO to yield carbonyl compounds. This methodology provides a novel and efficient route for generating complex aromatic structures, thus expanding the potential applications in organic synthesis.
