Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi 2 S 3 ) polycrystalline bulks with a high relative density (>90%) were fabricated by combining mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructural and thermoelectric (TE) properties were investigated with a special emphasis on the influence of SPS temperature. The components (Bi/S ratio), grain size, and relative density of Bi 2 S 3 bulk are sensitive to the SPS temperature, which all affect the electrical transport properties of samples. Elevating SPS temperature results in grain growth, densification, and spontaneous texturing, which benefit to enhance TE properties, whereas overheating leads to severe volatilization of both S and Bi and formation of porous microstructure. The highest figure of merit value reaches 0.22 at 573 K for the Bi 2 S 3 sample obtained by applying SPS at 673 K for 5 min, which is the maximum value reported so far in bulk Bi 2 S 3 system. The enhanced TE property of cheap and environmental friendly Bi 2 S 3 material indicates a great promise in TE devices.

Abstract:Semisolid powder processing (SPP) was used to fabricate n-type bismuth telluride-based polycrystalline bulk materials with improved thermoelectric properties. The minimum lattice thermal conductivity and the maximum ZT value of the SPP sample obtained in this study are 0.163 W m −1 K −1 at 383 K and 0.89 at 423 K, respectively. This ZT value exhibited a significant enhancement of 65.7 and 101.3% compared with the hot-pressing and the die-casting counterparts, respectively. The reduction of the lattice thermal conductivity is mainly due to the nanoscale grains and the mesoscale pores induced by the SPP. The grain boundaries and the interfaces brought by the porosities could scatter the phonons with mean free paths extensively from 300 nm to 1 μm. The remarkable enhancement of the ZT value and the convenient fabricating process suggest that the SPP is a promising method for mass production of high-performance bismuth telluride-based polycrystalline bulk materials.
Effect of Nano‐sic Dispersion on Thermoelectric Properties of Bi2Te3 Polycrystals

Abstract:Nano-SiC dispersed Bi2Te3 was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) followed by spark plasma sintering (SPS). The effects of SiC dispersion on the thermoelectric properties of the SPS-sintered Bi2Te3 alloys were investigated. The results revealed that SiC dispersion in the Bi2Te3 matrix increased the absolute value of Seebeck coefficient. Although the electrical resistance was increased somewhat, Bi2Te3 with 0.1 wt% SiC showed a higher power factor than Bi2Te3 without SiC. Because the dispersion of SiC nanoparticles reduced the thermal conductivity at the same time, 0.1 wt% (similar to 0.24 vol% SiC) addition of SiC nano-particles increased the figure of merit of Bi2Te3 by 18%. Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) polycrystalline bulks are fabricated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) combined with a mechanical alloying (MA) process. The electrical transport properties are investigated with a special emphasis on dry-milling speed, wet-milling time and mediums in MA process. The phase structure, the microstructure, and the electrical/thermal transport properties for the bulk samples are measured. The results suggest that the second Bi2O3 phase is formed because of the micro-oxidation when the wet medium is fixed to absolute ethyl alcohol, which refines the grain sizes and affects electrical transport properties of the bulk samples. Prolonging the wet-milling time in absolute ethyl alcohol causes the increase of resistivity and the decrease of the power factor. The electrical transport properties degrade due to the porous microstructure in bulk samples even without oxidization as the acetone is used as a milling medium. The largest ZT value 0.25 is obtained at 573 K for the samples dry-milled under 425 r/min for 15 h without wet-milling, which is the highest value in the reported values so far.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide (Bi2S3) polycrystalline samples were fabricated by mechanical alloying (MA) combined with spark plasma sintering (SPS). The microstructure and electrical transport properties were investigated with special emphasis on the influence of the ball-milling process. Bi2S3 compound powders could be readily synthesized directly from elemental powders under all the investigated conditions, and highly dense n-type bulk Bi2S3 samples with high density (>95%) were fabricated by the subsequent SPS process. Changing the MA conditions had no apparent influence on the microstructure or phase structure of the MA-derived Bi2S3 powders, but the electrical properties and thermopower of the SPS-sintered Bi2S3 bulk samples were greatly dependent on the MA speed and time. The power factor of Bi2S3 was increased to 233 μW K−2 m−1 at 573 K by optimizing the ball-milling process. This power factor is higher than values reported to date for Bi-S binary samples without texture.

Abstract:n-Type Bi2Te3 thermoelectric materials were prepared by spark plasma sintering (SPS) using mechanically alloyed powders. Seebeck coefficient and electrical conductivity of the resultant materials were measured, with emphasis on the effects of sintering process parameters on the electrical properties. The power factor was improved from 1.5 to 1.6mW/mK2 when the SPS pressure was increased from 20 to 50MPa at 623K, and was further increased to 2.1mW/mK2 under 50MPa by raising the SPS temperature from 623 to 673K. The maximum power factor was obtained for the sample sintered under optimized SPS process parameters, in which the sintering temperature and the sintering pressure are 673K and 50MPa, respectively.

Abstract:P-type thermoelectric material（Bi0.25Sb0.75）2Te3 was sintered by spark plasma sintering（SPS） process in the temperature range of 320-420 ℃. The microstructures of sintered materials were found to be well aligned,particularly when sintered at lower sintering temperatures. The electrical conductivity of the material became larger as the sintering temperature increased. The Seebeck coefficient showed a general decreasing tendency with an increase in sintering temperature. In terms of the power factor,the optimum sintering temperature was found to be 380 ℃ for a maximum value of around 2.6 mW/K.

Abstract:Bismuth sulfide powders were synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) and then consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) technique. In order to improve the electrical transport properties of bismuth sulfides, the carrier concentration was optimized by modifying chemical composition of sulfur through producing sulfur vacancies, and the carrier mobility was enhanced by a two-step SPS as a hot-forging process through increasing grain orientation. The electrical resistivity of bismuth sulfides was reduced to 10−4 from 10−2Ωm by optimizing sulfur content, and further lowered by hot-forging, whereby the power factor was significantly increased from 91 to 254μW/mK2. The hot-forged Bi2S2.90 sample showed the highest ZT=0.11 (at 523K), which is higher than the reported value. The present work revealed that bismuth sulfide compounds as a promising candidate of thermoelectric materials can be synthesized by a simple process.

Abstract:Bismuth antimony telluride is the most commonly used commercial thermoelectric material for power generation and refrigeration over the temperature range of 200–400 K. Improving the performance of these materials is a complected balance of optimizing thermoelectric properties. Decreasing the grain size of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 significantly reduces the thermal conductivity due to the scattering phonons on the grain boundaries. In this work, it is shown the advances of spark plasma sintering (SPS) for the preparation of nanocrystalline p-type thermoelectrics based on Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 at different temperatures (240, 350, 400oC). The complex study of structural and thermoelectric properties of Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 were presented. The high dimensionless thermoelectric figure of merit ZT ~ 1 or some more over 300–400 K temperature range for nanocrystalline p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 was obtained.

Abstract:In this paper, three p-type thermoelectric compounds, namely Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3, Bi0.3Sb1.7Te3, and Bi0.2Sb1.8Te3 were manufactured by mechanical milling and spark plasma sintering method. The effects of chemical composition on microstructural and thermoelectric properties were investigated. In this order, Bi, Te, and Sb powders with different contents were mechanically milled for 6 hours. Then, they were consolidated using a spark plasma sintering process (SPS) at 400 °C under 60 MPa pressure. The phase composition was analyzed using XRD with Cu-Kα radiation. The microstructural characterization of the specimens was performed using scanning electron microscopy. Moreover, thermoelectric properties of the samples, including the Seebeck coefficient, electrical and thermal conductivity, power factor, and ZT were determined. Analysis of XRD patterns of fabricated compositions indicated that a single phase with a rhombohedral lattice structure was synthesized in all conditions. In addition, SEM results showed an integrated structure with a few scattered micropores. The thermoelectric results confirmed that Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 demonstrates the lowest thermal conductivity (0.85 W/m K), the highest electrical conductivity (4.48 S/cm), and the maximum figure of merit (1.03 × 10−2) at room temperature. Therefore, it is the best option among the fabricated compounds to be utilized as thermoelectric materials.
Optimization of the Thermoelectric Properties of Bi 2 O 2 Se Ceramics by Altering the Temperature of Spark Plasma Sintering

Abstract:The n-type polycrystalline Bi2O2Se ceramics were fabricated by solid state reaction and SPSed at different temperatures (873–973 K). The grains of the sample grow up gradually and the grain size enlarges from about 200 nm to micrometer level with the increase of sintering temperature. The highest electrical conductivity of 6.23 S/cm is obtained for the sample sintered at 898 K which benefits from grain orientation along (00l) plane and the highest measured density. The electrical transport properties tend to decline with further increase of the sintering temperature due to the decrease of density and the orientation degree. The maximum power factor of 78.39 μWK−2m−1 is obtained at 773 K. The thermal conductivity is intrinsically suppressed owing to the layered crystal structure of Bi2O2Se and fine grains within the nanometer size. The ZT value reaches 0.09 at 773 K for the sample SPSed at 898 K and the optimal temperature during the SPS process has been determined.

Abstract:Bi2Te3 thin film samples are prepared by magnetron co sputtering. The samples are annealed in a nitrogen atmosphere and were treated at different temperature for 2 h. Effects of annealing temperature on the structure and thermoelectric properties of Bi2Te3 are studied in detail. As the annealing temperature increases, the Te element on the surface begins to volatilize, and some Te elements precipitate and crystallize on the surface, resulting in a decrease in the Te element in the Bi2Te3 thin film. When the annealing temperature is 350 ° C, the power factor of Bi2Te3 film reaches a maximum of 0.21×10−3 Wm−1K−2.

Abstract:Bi2S3 has been considered as a promising medium temperature thermoelectric material due to its low thermal conductivity and cost-effective features. However, the intrinsically poor electrical conductivity of Bi2S3 still limits its further thermoelectric applications. In this work, we optimize the thermoelectric performance of Bi2S3 using Cu doping via a facile hydrothermal method combined with spark plasma sintering. A well-tuned carrier concentration of 1.2 x 10(19) cm(-3) and electrical conductivity of 47 S cm(-1) at 523 K was attained, which is attributed to the increased electrons by Cu doping. In addition, the appeared micro-nano pores in both Bi2S3 and Cu doped Bi2S3 samples after spark plasma sintering benefits the reduction of lattice thermal conductivity (kappa l). The Bi1.985Cu0.015S3 sample exhibited the lowest kappa l of 0.405 W m(-1) K-1 at 573 K, which is the lowest value as far as we know in the reported Cu doped Bi2S3 materials at the same temperature. Finally, A maximum ZT value of 0.3 at 573 K was achieved in Bi1.985Cu0.015S3 sample. This study provides a new strategy to achieve low kappa l and high ZT value in Bi2S3-based thermoelectric materials.

Abstract:The widespread application of thermoelectric (TE) technology demands high‐performance materials, which has stimulated unceasing efforts devoted to the performance enhancement of Bi2Te3‐based commercialized thermoelectric materials. This study highlights the importance of the synthesis process for high‐performance achievement and demonstrates that the enhancement of the thermoelectric performance of (Bi,Sb)2Te3 can be achieved by applying cyclic spark plasma sintering to BixSb2–xTe3‐Te above its eutectic temperature. This facile process results in a unique microstructure characterized by the growth of grains and plentiful nanostructures. The enlarged grains lead to high charge carrier mobility that boosts the power factor. The abundant dislocations originating from the plastic deformation during cyclic liquid phase sintering and the pinning effect by the Sb‐rich nano‐precipitates result in low lattice thermal conductivity. Therefore, a high ZT value of over 1.46 is achieved, which is 50% higher than conventionally spark‐plasma‐sintered (Bi,Sb)2Te3. The proposed cyclic spark plasma liquid phase sintering process for TE performance enhancement is validated by the representative (Bi,Sb)2Te3 thermoelectric alloy and is applicable for other telluride‐based materials.

Abstract:Due to the excellent electrical transmission and potentially excellent thermoelectric (TE) performance, digenite (Cu1.8S) has attracted more attentions. The combination of mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) was widely used in preparing Cu1.8S bulk material, while the TE properties for pure sample were still low. Therefore, it’s worth to search a suitable synthesis method to enhance the thermoelectric performance for pristine Cu1.8S material. In this study, high-density bulk samples of copper sulfide (CS) were fabricated by solid states reaction method combined with SPS at different temperatures. When the SPS temperature was over 873 K, large amounts of sulfur volatilization lead to the appearance of Cu1.96S second phase and it was considered to have great influence on the thermoelectric performances. The result reveals that the increased sintering temperature could affect the density and grain size of the bulk samples. The highest ZT value of 0.54 was obtained at 773 K for the sample sintered at 773 K, which is also the highest ZT value for the pristine Cu1.8S in the literature.

Nanostructured Bi2-Xcuxs3 Bulk Materials With Enhanced Thermoelectric Performance

Abstract:Nanostructured Bi2-xCuxS3 (x = 0, 0.002, 0.005, 0.007, 0.01, 0.03) thermoelectric polycrystals were fabricated by combining mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) methods. The effect of Cu content on the microstructure and thermoelectric property of Bi2-xCuxS3 bulk samples was investigated. It was found that the subtle tailoring of Cu content could reduce both the electrical resistivity and the thermal conductivity at the same time, and consequently enhancing the thermoelectric property. A low electrical resistivity of 1.34 x 10(-4) Omega m(-1) and a low thermal conductivity of 0.52 W m(-1) K-1 were obtained for the Bi1.995Cu0.005S3 sample at 573 K. The low thermal conductivity is supposed to be due to the nanoscopic Cu-rich regions embedded in the host matrix. A peak ZT value of 0.34 at 573 K was achieved for the Bi1.995Cu0.005S3 composition, which is the highest value in the Bi2S3 system reported so far.

Abstract:The Bi2Te3 compound was synthesized by mechanical alloying (MA) of highly pure constituents of Bi and Te powders, and then was consolidated by spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The MA-derived alloy formation was characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the microstructure change was investigated through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The thermoelectric properties were measured using a Seebeck Coefficient/Electrical Resistance Measuring System. The influence of MA time on the thermoelectric properties of the SPS-sintered samples was investigated to find the optimal MA condition for the powder synthesis and thermoelectric properties. The obtained results showed that the sample with the MA time of 6 h exhibited the optimal electrical transport properties. The maximum power factor of over 2.0 × 10-3 W/m K2 was obtained between 323 K and 423 K.

Abstract:There exists a vast choice when considering the selection of thermoelectric materials. The standard classification is based on the temperature range of the application. This study fabricated mid‐temperature Bi-Se-Te using spark plasma sintering (SPS). Consequently, the impact of the sintering conditions on the thermoelectric properties was analyzed. The structural analysis indicated that initial and secondary sintering processes effectively produced the low-temperature thermoelectric material Bi2Se0.45Te2.55. The sintering duration and temperature changes mainly influenced the grain boundary density, with elevated temperatures inducing defects that impacted the performance. Secondary sintering resulted in layered structures with elongated grains, which enhanced the phonon scattering effect. This configuration markedly decreased the thermal conductivity, increasing the ZT value by 60%.

Abstract:Bi2Te3-based compounds are currently the most commercially relevant thermoelectric materials near room temperature. They are prepared via hot pressing, hot deformation, spark plasma sintering, and other consolidation processes, which are typically performed at 400–500 °C. Such high-temperature processes are energy-intensive and generate unnecessary waste heat, making them undesirable for a large-scale production. In this study, a low-temperature liquid-phase-assisted sintering (or so-called cold-sintering) process was employed to fabricate p-type Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 bulk materials at temperatures below 150 °C. At the optimal sintering temperature (130 °C), a ZT value as high as 0.56 at 450 K can be achieved, competitive to that of a commercial Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 ingot (ZT 0.8–1.0). The addition of a small amount of transient liquid facilitates grain reorientation and expedites a mass transfer process under axial compaction and liquid evaporation conditions, thus resulting in nearly fully densified Bi0.5Sb1.5Te3 pellet samples (>97% theoretical density). Furthermore, the low-temperature sintering process results in the reduction of grain size and promotes twin boundaries, resulting in a low lattice thermal conductivity of 0.57 W m–1 K–1 at 380 K due to phonon scattering. Abstract:Highly dense n-type Bi2Te3 dispersed with xvol% nano-SiC particles (x=0, 0.1, 0.5, 1.0) thermoelectric materials were fabricated by mechanical alloying (MA) and spark plasma sintering (SPS) method. The effects of nano-SiC addition on the thermoelectric and mechanical properties were studied. Compared with Bi2Te3 matrix, Bi2Te3 materials dispersed with nano-SiC show increased Seebeck coefficient, decreased electrical conductivity, and reduced thermal conductivity as well in the measured temperature range of 323–523K. The maximum dimensionless figure of merit (ZTmax) was improved from 0.99 for Bi2Te3 sample to 1.04 for 0.1vol% SiC dispersed Bi2Te3 sample at 423K. The Vickers hardness increased linearly from 0.62 to 0.79GPa as 1.0vol% SiC was added. The highest fracture toughness of 1.34MPam1/2 was obtained for 0.1vol% SiC addition, and the highest Young's modulus of 42.7GPa was obtained for 0.5vol% SiC added sample.
