Abstract:An accelerating tube is an electrostatic lens system. This paper made use of the micro unit model to derive the path equations of an accelerating tube by integrating the ion path of a unit electrostatic lens. The focusing properties are discussed according to the calculated results.

Abstract:A tapered microtube fabricated from a glass capillary tube can achieve subwavelength focusing at optical frequencies. This focusing effect is influenced by many factures. The role of taper ratios is invested in this paper with theoretical analysis and numerical simulation. It revealed that when the taper ratio is larger, the focusing spot has higher intensity and smaller FWHM.

Abstract:A 3-Dimensional accurate analysis of the electrostatic valveless micropump involved in electrostatic dynamics,structural dynamics and fluid dynamics of the system.This was made by using multi-field coupled analysis.The results show that the dynamic characteristics of fluid in the micropump are dependent highly on the vibration of flexible membrane.The flow rectification function of the diffuser/nozzle element will work only after the pressure difference between the two ends of the element reaches a critical value.In the pump chamber,the fluidic press distribution almost independent of the depth variation.The maximum of Reynolds numbers is far less than the traditional critical Reynolds number.Due to the increasing demands for accuracy,the nonlinear features of viscous loss of the fluid can no longer be neglected or simplified,but have to be taken into account in detail.

Abstract:The 300 kV accelerating tube was specially developed for the HI-13 tandem accelerator injector upgrading in Beijing Radioactive Ion-Beam Facilities(BRIF) project to increase the injector platform potential from 150 to 300 kV and to meet the requirement of more injecting beam energy of havy ion for BRIF.The total length of the tube is 1.256 m,and it was made of glass insulators and stainless steel electrodes using sticking technology.

Abstract:The self-focusing condition of a charged particle beam in a resistive plasma has been studied. When plasma heating is weak, the beam focusing is intensified by increasing the beam density or velocity. However, when plasma heating is strong, the beam focusing is only determined by the beam velocity. Especially, in weak heating conditions, the beam trends to be focused into the centre as a whole, and in strong heating conditions, a double-peak structure with a hollow centre is predicted to appear. Furthermore, it is found that the beam radius has a significant effect on focusing distance: a larger the beam radius will result in a longer focusing distance. Simulation results also show that when the beam radius is large enough, filamentation of the beam appears. Our results will serve as a reference for relevant beam–plasma experiments and theoretical analyses, such as heavy ion fusion and ion-beam-driven high energy density physics.

Abstract:This paper introduced the particular advantages of electrostatic focusing style in millimeter traveling wave tube and analyzed the methods to establish periodic electrostatic field. Based on a Ka band traveling wave tube, first we designed an intense current density electron gun and selected a comb-like shape as slow wave circuit. Then a numerical simulation on the electron optical system made up of an electron gun and a slow wave circuit was carried out. Finally we summarized tolerance for key sizes of the slow wave circuit. The results showed that one hundred-percent beam passed slow wave structure smoothly. The good static beam pass was a foundation stone for subsequent sufficient beam-wave interaction and it was proven that a large current density beam in millimeter traveling wave tube could be focused commendably by electrostatic field. Simultaneously, the summary for the tolerance could provide a reference for the design of the electron optical system of millimeter electrostatically focused traveling wave tube.

Abstract:Considering the influences of centrifugal acceleration on temperature field in the high linear acceleration, heat and vibration combined test environmental system, the coupling mechanism between centrifugal acceleration and thermo-field was studied. On the basis of hydrodynamic heat transfer equations and three-dimensional solid heat conduction equations, the coupling relationship between centrifugal acceleration and thermo-field was determined, then the temperature field and the fluid field with a local thermal source and a mesa inside were calculated under centrifugal acceleration with the finite element analysis method. The coupling mechanism between centrifugal acceleration and thermo-field was revealed after a-nalysis of the fluid field, and the proper methods were presented for improving the evenness of the temperature field. Research results show that centrifugal acceleration is responsible for the unevenness of the temperature field and makes temperature field much more disordered than linear acceleration can, and that forced convection and proper position of the object inside can effectively improve the evenness of the temperature field under centrifugal acceleration.

Abstract:A hollow cylindrical micron-scale structure is proposed to enhance and manipulate the laser plasma interaction. It is shown through 3-D particle-in-cell simulations that the incident laser pulse intensity is enhanced within the tube. A detailed study of the intensification optimizes the tube dimensions and provides a characterization of the in-tube intensity. By coupling the micro-tube plasma lens to a traditional flat interface, we show an increase in on-target intensity. We detail proton energy enhancement as a potential application of the micro-tube plasma lens target, where the tube structure acts to focus the light and provide additional electrons that enhance the accelerating sheath field.

Abstract:We have studied the electron acceleration by a tightly focused cylindrical vector Gaussian beam. Different from the Lax series field, cylindrical vector Gaussian beams are vector-beam solutions of Maxwell's equations and its focusing property can be numerically analyzed by the Richards-Wolf vectorial diffraction theory. Field differences exist between the cylindrical vector Gaussian beam and the Lax series field. The cylindrical vector Gaussian beam increases the asymmetry of the electromagnetic fields, which is more beneficial to the electron acceleration. When the beam waist falls down to the order of the wavelength, the high laser intensity zone is more proper to define the reflection, capture and transmission conditions of the electrons. The injection energy and the injected angle of the electron and the initial phase of the laser beam play important roles for the electron to enter and be trapped by the high laser intensity zone.

Abstract:In recent years, tapered glass capillary ion beam focusing is developing rapidly. It is attractive for simple, compact, low cost and easy use. However, the focusing mechanism for MeV ion beams is still indistinct. We present several experimental results of focusing 2MeV He+ beam. Ion beams were focused by tapered glass capillaries with various outlet inner diameters from several micron to hundred micron. The current densities, angle divergences and energy spectra of the transmitted ion beams are measured. The results proved that 2MeV He+ ions can focused and guided by our capillaries. The energy spectra show that a great part of transmitted ions experienced obvious energy loss, which is different from results of others research groups. We discussed the reason and charged it to the larger incident angle. Considered the incident ions with larger incident angle, the charge will distribute in a layer of micro meter depth in the capillary’s inner wall, but not the surface. The energy loss and many other spectra characters can be explained in this way.

Abstract:With plasma as the medium, laser driven accelerator can generate high energy pulsed particles with initially micron scale source size and broad energy spread. Efficient transport of the beam with above characteristics is a challenging task. Active plasma lenses (APLs) provide strong, tunable, axisymmetric focusing with weak chromatic dependencies, making them highly beneficial for compact laser accelerators. However, due to the large divergence angle of the laser-accelerated proton beams, a majority of the protons cannot be transmitted through the APLs, resulting in losses. In this study, we propose a radius-variable APL (RV-APL) that optimizes the capillary’s geometry based on the beam envelope. The collection angle of RV-APL under the design parameters in the article can be increased by about 80% compared to a cylindrical APL (C-APL) with a constant radius, achieving the transmission capacity of traditional magnets. The magnetic field distribution of the RV-APL was predicted using a two-dimensional axisymmetric plasma discharge model, and the focused beam’s chromaticity and emittance properties were theoretically analyzed through particle tracking simulation.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a prototype of electron curtain accelerator with 200 kV high voltage and an average beam current around 20 mA with beam width about 600 mm. Several physical and mechanical design of this facility is discussed in detail thoroughly, in conjunction with 3D software modeling and simulation. And some efforts to modulate cathode structure have been done to improve the electron beam uniformity effectively.

Abstract:Focusing performance is a major concern for systems based on hydrodynamic focusing. In this study, the hydrodynamic focusing subsystem of a microscopic imaging system was analysed and modelled. The theoretical model was used to analyse the velocity and distribution range of sample particles in the focused sample flow in the micro-channel of the hydrodynamic focusing subsystem, when the velocities of the sample and sheath flows were varied. The results were used to optimise the coupling velocities of the sample and sheath flows for the microscopic imaging system, to keep working efficiency and image quality of the system simultaneously. An independent experiment was then conducted for verification, and the results agreed well with the theoretical investigation. The results of this study provide a general framework for adjusting the sample and sheath flow velocities to optimise the hydrodynamic focusing performance.

Abstract:Active plasma lenses (APLs) have been proved as an effective device for focusing charged particles. In this paper, we have theoretically studied the feasibility of using a discharged-capillary based high gradient APL to focus laser accelerated pulsed proton beams. We specify equations of motion of proton beams in both straight and curved discharge-capillary APLs, on which the regulation law of a specific APL focusing and tuning protons can be calculated. Then, we summarize several constraints of APLs. Confirmed by a 2D PIC simulation, we find that with a proper plasma state, the proton energy loss, the transverse current distribution, and the Z-pinch effect do not significantly affect the beam transport, while the passive plasma lens (PPL) effect can promote the APL focusing within an acceptable extent. The regime of working parameters, including the plasma density ${n}_{0}$, the discharge current $I$, the length $L$ and the radius $R$ of APLs are given for different aimed proton energy. The results show that APL, whose parameters can be adjusted flexibly, is suitable for focusing and transporting proton beams with energy of 1--100 MeV. It is expected to build a beam-line based on plasma with centimeter length scale for pulsed proton beams. Such compact beam-line can have significant impact on various applications.

Abstract:Stable sheet electron beam transport or focusing is critical for the sheet electron beam vacuum electronic device (VED) which is a kind of promising high power device in millimeter and sub-millimeter wave band. This paper proposes a periodic elliptical solenoid structure for the transport of high-elliptical sheet electron beams. The magnetic field of the elliptical solenoid is analyzed, and the conditions for the stable transport of sheet beams in the structure are derived. Particle-in-cell simulations are conducted and verify the conditions.
Study of liquid-metal based heating method for temperature gradient focusing purpose

Abstract:Temperature gradient focusing (TGF) is a highly efficient focusing technique for the concentration and separation of charged analytes in microfluidic channels. The design of an appropriate temperature gradient is very important for the focusing efficiency. In this study, we proposed a new technique to generate the temperature gradient. This technique utilizes a microchannel filled with liquid-metal as an electrical heater in a microfluidic chip. By applying an electric current, the liquid-metal heater generates Joule heat, forming the temperature gradient in the microchannel. To optimize the temperature gradient and find out the optimal design for the TGF chip, numerical simulations on four typical designs were studied. The results showed that design 1 can provide a best focusing method, which has the largest temperature gradient. For this best design, the temperature is almost linearly distributed along the focusing microchannel. The numerical simulations were then validated both theoretically and experimentally. The following experiment and theoretical analysis on the best design also provide a useful guidance for designing and fabricating the liquid-metal based TGF microchip.

Abstract:A cascaded ion acceleration scheme is proposed by use of ultrashort laser-irradiated microtubes. When the electrons of a microtube are blown away by intense laser pulses, strong charge-separation electric fields are formed in the microtube both along the axial and along the radial directions. By controlling the time delay between the laser pulses and a pre-accelerated proton beam injected along the microtube axis, we demonstrate that this proton beam can be further accelerated by the transient axial electric field in the laser-irradiated microtube. Moreover, the collimation of the injected proton beam can be enhanced by the inward radial electric field. Numerical simulations show that this cascaded ion acceleration scheme works efficiently even at non-relativistic laser intensities, and it can be applied to injected proton beams in the energy range from 1 to 100 MeV. Therefore, it is particularly suitable for cascading acceleration of protons to higher energy.

Abstract:In this paper, the design of a C-band SW accelerating tube is presented and its high power test set is shown. The tube can accelerate electrons to 9 MeV or 6 MeV. Its length is about 620mm, and a Pierce electron gun is used. A 2.5MW pulsed magnetron at 5712 MHz is served as the tube's RF power source. Two energy modes are performed by changing the input RF power and the injecting voltage of electron gun.

Abstract:An acceleration channel has been found in the field of a focused laser beam propagating in vacuum, which shows similar characteristics to that of a wave guide tube of conventional accelerators: a subluminous wave phase velocity in conjunction with a strong longitudinal electric field component. Relativistic electrons injected into this channel can remain synchronous with the accelerating phase for sufficiently long time and receive considerable energy from the field. We call this acceleration scheme CAS (capture and acceleration scenario). The basic conditions for CAS to occur are examined and the output properties of electrons accelerated by this scheme are also presented in this paper.
