Abstract:This article is mainly focused on a method for stabilizing the position of an incident laser beam position by using a closed-loop fast steering mirror system. According to the input and output data, a model for the fast steering mirror system is established, which is utilized for the closed-loop controller. In the experiment, the spot centroid position, which is obtained by means of a position sensitive detector, is used as a signal for modeling and closed loop control. Because of the difference between the levels of atmospheric turbulence over water and over rock, the effects of the fast steering mirror system for the two cases may also differ. Therefore, experiments of laser beam stabilization have been carried out in these two different environments. The results show that the spot jitter is stronger when the laser is transmitted over rock, compared to transmission over water, and that spot jitter below 25 Hz can be restricted by closed-loop control in both environments.

Abstract:Electron acceleration by transversely echelon phase-modulated (EPM) circularly polarized (CP) intense laser pulse is investigated. Solution of the relativistic electron equations of motion shows that the CP EPM light wave structure can disrupt the harmonic response of a trapped electron not only in the transverse direction but also in the direction of laser propagation. In each laser cycle, there can be a net gain in the electron's transverse momentum, which is promptly converted into the forward direction by the Lorentz force. As a result, the electron can be trapped and accelerated in the favorable phase of the laser for a rather long time. Its momentum gain then accumulates and can eventually reach high levels. It is also found that with the CP EPM laser, the net acceleration of the electron is not sensitive to its initial position and velocity relative to the phase of the laser fields, so that such a laser can also be useful for accelerating thermal electron bunches to high energies.

Abstract:Electron acceleration, in vacuum, mediated by an intense echelon phase-modulated long Gaussian laser pulse, is investigated here. Theoretical and numerical analyses show that this pulse can accelerate an electron to much higher energies than an unmodulated pulse. The staircase-like phase structure of the laser field encourages electron trapping in the favorable wave phase, greatly increasing the effective acceleration distance. Also, the electron motion is now more in the laser propagation direction. The conditions for efficient acceleration are obtained. Since the slower electrons can also be efficiently accelerated to high energies and the accelerated electrons are more axially oriented, the average energy gain by an initially Maxwellian electron bunch can be more than 13 times that obtained without the echelon phase modulation. This is at the expense of somewhat increased spatial and thermal spread, and the accelerated bunch is also more collimated.

Abstract:In high power laser systems, nonlinear effect, one of the key factors of beam wavefront aberration and even irreversible damage to system, has always been one of the top considerations of researchers for decades. A hybrid ray-tracing method for both linear media and nonlinear media based on geometric optics is presented in this paper and realized by programming. In a simple optic system with KDP crystal, an obvious decline of beam quality is observed in high laser power density conditions and a method taking component intervals as compensation of beam quality is proved feasible. Considering the complexity of traditional modeling method based on surfaces, a modeling method based on components is established. Hopefully, the conclusions and flaws of this paper can shed light on relevant work and further research.

Abstract:An acceleration channel has been found in the field of a focused laser beam propagating in vacuum, which shows similar characteristics to that of a wave guide tube of conventional accelerators: a subluminous wave phase velocity in conjunction with a strong longitudinal electric field component. Relativistic electrons injected into this channel can remain synchronous with the accelerating phase for sufficiently long time and receive considerable energy from the field. We call this acceleration scheme CAS (capture and acceleration scenario). The basic conditions for CAS to occur are examined and the output properties of electrons accelerated by this scheme are also presented in this paper.

Abstract:The phase stability in the capture and acceleration scenario (CAS) is studied and compared with that of conventional linear electron accelerators (CLEAs). For the CAS case, it has been found that a slow phase slippage occurs due to the difference between the electron velocity and the phase velocity of the longitudinal accelerating electric field. Thus, CAS electrons cannot remain in a fixed small phase region of the accelerating field to obtain a quasimonoenergy gain in contrast to the stability of phase oscillation in CLEAs. Also, the energy spread of the output electron beam for the CAS case cannot be kept as small as the CLEA because there is no good phase bunching phenomenon generated by phase oscillation.

Abstract:Outer and inner radius of hard-edge annular aperture as well as decay factor as main effection factors for the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam ( CAB) carrying hard-edge annular aperture arc all considered. Conclusion has been achieved that, putting hard-edge annular aperture on CAB will enhance its first autofocusing peak intensity and suppresses the further autofocusing peak intensity, and its first autofocusing peak intensity will also be generally increased under the condition of different decay factors. These conclusions have potential applications in particle manipulation.

Abstract:To improve the abruptly autofocusing property of circular Airy beam, we propose a method to generate multiple circular Airy beams (MCAB) carrying lens phase factors using a spatial light modulator (SLM). The propagation dynamics of this kind of beam is theoretically simulated, as well as experimentally verified. It is shown that four identical beams are produced symmetrically and they can move toward the center simultaneously. By changing the lens phase information encoded in the SLM, we can achieve different focal positions and focal intensities as we want. With the same parameters, compared with a single circular Airy beam (SCAB), there are two focal planes and the abruptly autofocusing property can be greatly enhanced. It may have some applications in various fields.

Abstract:Post-acceleration of protons in helical coil targets driven by intense,ultrashort laser pulses can enhance ion energy by utilizing the transient current from the targets'self-discharge.The acceleration length of protons can exceed a few millimeters,and the acceleration gradient is of the order of GeV/m.How to ensure the synchronization between the accelerating electric field and the protons is a crucial problem for efficient post-acceleration.In this paper,we study how the electric field mismatch induced by current dispersion affects the synchronous acceleration of protons.We propose a scheme using a two-stage helical coil to control the current dispersion.With optimized parameters,the energy gain of protons is increased by four times.Proton energy is expected to reach 45 MeV using a hundreds-of-terawatts laser,or more than 100 MeV using a petawatt laser,by controlling the current dispersion.

Abstract:Focal spot effects on the generation of proton beams are investigated by a high-intensity high-contrast laser irradiating on solid foil in target normal sheath acceleration experiments. Different spot size, transverse shape, and intensity of the laser are obtained by appropriately using deformable mirrors and parabolic mirrors. Experiments show that the maximum proton energy is mainly determined by the laser intensity if the focal spot size is not seriously changed. Compared with the previous experimental results, the optimum foil thickness d(o) is scaled by the laser intensity I as d(o) similar to I-0.33. The corresponding theoretical estimation is carried out as d(o) similar to I-0.25 for ultra-high intensity laser systems with similar contrast. MULTI and particle-in-cell simulations are used to interpret the experimental results.

Abstract:It has been found that for a focused laser beam propagating in free space, there exists, surrounding the laser beam axis, a subluminous wave phase velocity region. Relativistic electrons injected into this region can be trapped in the acceleration phase and remain in phase with the laser field for sufficiently long times, thereby receiving considerable energy from the field. Optics placed near the laser focus are not necessary, thus allowing high intensities and large energy gains. Important features of this process are examined via test particle simulations. The resulting energy gains are in agreement with theoretical estimates based on acceleration by the axial laser field.

Abstract:Not long after the laser was invented, it has been marked as a candidate source of strong, high-frequency electromagnetic radiation for acceleration of particles. Indeed, while the complex particle accelerator facilities today are an astonishing culmination of decades of work contributed by generations of physicists, engineers, and a host of scientists, new trends and acceleration technologies have been recently proposed and demonstrated. One of these technologies involves the miniaturization of particle accelerators, which is achieved by replacing the radio-frequency electromagnetic fields accelerating the particles with fields in the optical frequency range, using lasers. This entails using nanophotonics structures to provide the required field distribution. Recently, individual elements towards the nanophotonics counterpart of RF accelerators have been demonstrated. Similarly, active electron transport through such a structure has been shown, which was based on the concept of alternating phase focusing. In this contribution, we discuss and augment on the recently-demonstrated principle of alternating phase focusing using optical frequencies, and provide new insights from relevant simulations and experiments. In particular, we show how to identify possible imprecisions and parasitic effects from time delay scans and discuss how the transmission of electrons through the nanometric structure depends on the temporal overlap between electron and laser pulses, and show how the incidence angle of the electron beam can affect the measured transmission of electrons through the structure.

Abstract:Phase space matching between two plasma-based accelerator (PBA) stages and between a PBA and a traditional accelerator component is a critical issue for emittance preservation. The drastic differences of the transverse focusing strengths as the beam propagates between stages and components may lead to a catastrophic emittance growth even when there is a small energy spread. We propose using the linear focusing forces from nonlinear wakes in longitudinally tailored plasma density profiles to control phase space matching between sections with negligible emittance growth. Several profiles are considered and theoretical analysis and particle-in-cell simulations show how these structures may work in four different scenarios. Good agreement between theory and simulation is obtained, and it is found that the adiabatic approximation misses important physics even for long profiles.

Abstract:The effect of focusing geometry oil slope of carrier-envelope (CE) phase phi(CE) versus propagation distance from the focus in few-cycle laser pulses is investigated. The slope could be adjusted by changing the distance L between the waist of the incident beam and the lens. At the focus, partial derivative phi(CE)/partial derivative 9(z/zr) = 0 when L = 0, and partial derivative phi(CE)/partial derivative(z/zr) = -2 when L = infinity. The longer the distance L, the steeper the curve of the CE phase at the focus.

Abstract:High-order correction terms to the expression of the field of ultra-short tightly focused Gaussian laser pulses are derived. Terms up to seventh order in the small dimensionless spatial parameter s=1/(k 0 w 00 ) and first order in the small dimensionless temporal parameter ε=1/(ω 0 t 0 ) are explicitly presented (ω 0 =ck 0 the central oscillatory frequency, 2t 0 the pulse duration, w 00 the beam waist radius at the central frequency ω 0 ). To evaluate the correction efficacy, both the corrected and the paraxial field equations are used in detailed simulation studies of laser/electron interaction dynamics. Special attention is given to the vacuum laser acceleration scheme. The influence on the electron dynamics due to the diffraction edge field of a tightly focused laser beam is also investigated.
Discussion of 90° Stopband in Low-Energy Superconducting Linear Accelerators

Abstract:Superconducting linear accelerators (SCL) have a high acceleration gradient and are capable of operating in a high-duty factor mode. For high-power and high-intensity SCL, the design of beam dynamics generally follows the principle that the zero-current periodic phase advance (σ0) of each degree of freedom is less than 90° to avoid envelope instability caused by space charge. However, this principle is obtained under the condition of a completely periodic focusing channel, and it is ambiguous for pseudo-periodic structures, such as linear accelerators. Although transverse beam dynamics without acceleration have been studied by other researchers, it appears that there are some connections between pure 2D and 3D beam dynamics. Based on these two points, five focusing schemes for the solenoid and quadrupole doublet channels were designed to simulate the beam behavior with non-constant σ0. Among them, the four schemes follow the characteristics of variation in the zero-current longitudinal phase advance (σ0l) under a constant acceleration gradient and synchronous phase. The zero-current transverse phase advance (σ0t) is consistent with σ0l, based on the equipartition requirement. The initial σ0t was set to 120°, 110°, 100°, and 90°, and was then gradually decreased to approximately 40° at the end of the channel. The last scheme maintains the maximum σ0t of 88° by reducing the acceleration gradient of the corresponding cavities, until the point at which σ0t equals 88° with a normal gradient. Using the stopbands obtained from the linearized envelope equations and multiparticle particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations, the transport properties of both continuous and 3D-bunched beams with the acceleration of the five focusing schemes were studied. It was found that for a CW beam, when tune depression > 0.7, σ0t can break through 90° when the beams were transported in both solenoid and quadrupole doublet periodic focusing channels. When tune depression < 0.7, the conclusions were different. For the solenoid focusing system, σ0t can partially break through 90°, and the beam quality is not significantly affected. For the quadrupole doublet focusing system, a partial breakthrough of 90° has a greater impact on the beam quality. The same conclusions were obtained for a bunched beam with acceleration.

Abstract:Abstract We demonstrate an all-optical method for controlling the transverse motion of an ionization injected electron beam in a laser plasma accelerator by using the transversely asymmetrical plasma wakefield. The laser focus shape can control the distribution of a transversal wakefield. When the laser focus shape is changed from circular to slanted elliptical in the experiment, the electron beam profiles change from an ellipse to three typical shapes. The three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulation result agrees well with the experiment, and it shows that the trajectories of these accelerated electrons change from undulating to helical. Such an all-optical method could be useful for convenient control of the transverse motion of an electron beam, which results in synchrotron radiation from orbit angular momentum.

Fast longitudinal beam dynamics optimization in x-ray FEL linear accelerators

Abstract:A high peak current, flat longitudinal phase space electron beam is desirable for efficient x-ray free electron laser (FEL) radiation in next generation light sources. To attain such a beam requires the extensive design of the linear accelerator (linac) including both linear and nonlinear effects. In this paper, we propose a lumped longitudinal beam dynamics model for fast optimization of the electron beam longitudinal phase space through the accelerator. This model is much faster than available tracking programs and also shows good agreement with the fully three-dimensional element-by-element multi-particle simulations. We applied this model in a parallel multi-objective differential evolution optimization program to an existing LCLS-II superconducting linac design and obtained an optimal solution with significantly higher core peak current than the original design.

Abstract:Acceleration and focusing of high-energy proton beams from fast-ignition (FI) -related hemisphere-cone assembled targets have been numerically studied by hybrid particle-in-cell simulations and compared with those from planar-foil and open-hemisphere targets. The whole physical process including the laser-plasma interaction has been self-consistently modeled for 15 ps, at which time the protons reach asymptotic motion. It is found that the achievable focus of proton beams is limited by the thermal pressure gradients in the co-moving hot electrons, which induce a transverse defocusing electric field that bends proton trajectories near the axis. For the advanced hemisphere-cone target, the flow of hot electrons along the cone wall induces a local transverse focusing sheath field, resulting in a clear enhancement in proton focusing; however, it leads to a significant loss of longitudinal sheath potential, reducing the total conversion efficiency from laser to protons.

Abstract:Broad flat field laser scanning is critical to the success of laser material processing, used in techniques such as rapid prototyping & manufacturing (RP&M) and micro-machining. For these techniques it is necessary to produce high-performance optical systems that can fulfill the need for a smaller focused spot size over broad, flat field scanning areas. This paper concentrates on the issues of defocus error compensation. A dynamic focusing system is designed, intended primarily for broad flat field galvanometric laser scanning applications. Key technologies are described in detail; corresponding solutions have been used to design and produce a CO2 infrared optical focusing system, which is capable of scanning a focused spot size of 120μm or less over areas up to 500mm2.
