Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) requires frequency mapping of the Brillouin spectrum to obtain environmental information (e.g., temperature or strain) over the length of the sensing fiber, with the finite frequency-sweeping time-limiting applications to only static or slowly varying strain or temperature environments. To solve this problem, we propose the use of an optical chirp chain probe wave to remove the requirement of frequency sweeping for the Brillouin spectrum, which enables distributed ultrafast strain measurement with a single pump pulse. The optical chirp chain is generated using a frequency-agile technique via a fast-frequency-changing microwave, which covers a larger frequency range around the Stokes frequency relative to the pump wave, so that a distributed Brillouin gain spectrum along the fiber is realized. Dynamic strain measurements for periodic mechanical vibration, mechanical shock, and a switch event are demonstrated at sampling rates of 25 kHz, 2.5 MHz and 6.25 MHz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of distributed Brillouin strain sensing with a wide-dynamic range at a sampling rate of up to the MHz level.

Abstract:The dynamic sampling rate of Brillouin optical time domain analysis (BOTDA) is limited by fiber length. For breaking through this limit, a Brillouin optical time domain collider (BOTDC) is proposed and experimentally demonstrated. In this BOTDC, by employing frequency-hopping pump and probe waves, sensing information-crosstalk between adjacent pump pulses is avoided even though the pump pulse interval is shorter than the round-trip time of flight in the fiber. In the experiment, periodic mechanical vibrations with a 19.75 Hz fundamental frequency and a 39.49 Hz harmonic frequency are measured by a 10-frequency BOTDC with a sampling rate of 49 kHz which is 10 times higher than that in the BOTDA.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) using distributed Brillouin amplification (DBA) only requires a milliwatt-level pump to achieve a sensing range beyond 100 km, which provides a powerful tool for temperature/strain sensing. However, similar to the majority of other long-range BOTDAs, the state-of-the-art reports require > 1000 times average, severely restricting the sensing speed. The blind area over tens of kilometers caused by the nonuniform Brillouin response and parasitic amplitude modulation (AM) are crucial factors affecting the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR). Here, a comprehensive performance optimization and substantial enhancement for BOTDA sensors was presented by the direct demodulation of an injection-locked dual-bandwidth probe wave. Injection locking (IL) can completely eliminate the impact of AM noise; dual-bandwidth probe enables self-adaptive pulse loss compensation, thereby intensifying the SNR flatness along the ultralong fiber, and direct probe demodulation can overcome nonlocal effects and allows ∼19.7 dB enhancement of probe input power. Therefore, using only 100 times average, ∼148.3 km sensing, and ∼5 m spatial resolution were achieved with < ∼0.8 MHz standard deviation of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) over a broad range (∼131.7 km). The reduction in averages was more than 10 times that of the reported majority of long-range BOTDAs. Such performances were achieved without using time-consuming or post-processing techniques, such as optical pulse coding and image denoising. Because this approach is compatible with optical chirp chain technique without frequency sweeping, fast acquisition (0.3 s) was also realized, which has the potential for fast sensing at 3.3 Hz along a ∼150 km fiber.

Abstract:For the first time, a direct detection BOTDR is demonstrated for distributed dynamic strain sensing incorporating double-edge technique, time-division multiplexing technique and upconversion technique. The double edges are realized by using the transmission curve and reflection curve of an all-fiber Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI). Benefiting from the low loss of the fiber at, the time-division multiplexing technique is performed to realize the double-edge technique by using only a single-channel FPI and only one piece of a detector. In order to detect the weak spontaneous Brillouin backscattering signal efficiently, a fiber-coupled upconversion detector is adopted to upconvert the backscattering signal at 1548.1 nm to 863 nm, which is detected by a Si-APD finally. In the experiment, dynamic strain disturbance up to 1.9m{\epsilon} over 1.5 km of polarization maintaining fiber is detected at a sampling rate of 30 Hz. An accuracy of 30{\mu}{\epsilon} and spatial resolution of 0.6 m is realized.

Abstract:The Pulse-Pre Pump Brillouin Optical Time Domain Analysis (PPP-BOTDA) technique is introduced to implement the multi-direction strain measurement. The monitoring principle is stated. The layout scheme of optical fibers is proposed. The temperature compensation formula and its realizing method are given. The experiments, under tensile load, combined bending and tensile load, are implemented to validate the feasibility of the proposed method. It is shown that the PPP-BOTDA technique can be used to discriminate the multi-direction strains with high spatial resolution and precision.

Abstract:We have proposed and demonstrated an enhanced Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) sensing system with fast measurement speed based on the Brillouin phase recovery using Kramers-Kronig (KK) relation. The non-Lorentz Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) and Brillouin phase spectrum (BPS) measured by BOTDA are theoretically validated to satisfy KK relation and hence the BPS is digitally recovered by performing Hilbert Transform (HT) to the measured BGS. The recovery of the whole BPS along the 45km fiber only consumes 0.3s. Both simulation and experiment have been carried out to analyze the quality of the recovered BPS under various conditions. By making use of the excellent linearity of the recovered BPS, we accelerate the data processing speed by three times through Linear Fitting (LF) of BPS, without compromise of the sensing accuracy. With implementation of simple HT and LF, this scheme does not need modification of the BOTDA setup and complicated data processing algorithm, which would be a practical way for applications where fast measurement speed is needed, especially in long-distance and high-spatial resolution sensing.

Abstract:A novel technique to perform dynamic strain measurement with a Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) sensing system based on short-time Fourier transform (STFT) is proposed. Unlike traditional frequency scanning methods, the proposed system samples the Brillouin backscattering signal directly after it has been downconverted to the intermediated frequency (IF) region. The Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) of the sensing fibre was reconstructed from the recorded time-domain data continuously without dead-time, which provided a much higher refreshing rate of the strain measurement. Therefore, dynamic strain variation over an optical fibre can be measured with a single-end structure that is more flexible and reliable. A 16.7 Hz strain variation on a 12 m section was successfully detected at the end of a 270 m sensing fibre with 4 m spatial resolution and 45 mu e uncertainty.

Abstract:In this letter, a resolution enhancement and signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) improvement scheme for digital optical frequency comb (DOFC)-based Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) ultrafast distributed sensing employing a pump pulse array is proposed. Based on the properties of the time-invariant linear system and the cyclic revolution theorem, experimental results indicate that its spatial resolution reaches 10.24 m while the frequency uncertainty is below 2 MHz over a 9.5 km fiber. Moreover, the response time is only 209.6 μs and the temperature measurement error is less than 0.52 °C.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is an efficient distributed structural strain/temperature measurement technology by identifying the Brillouin frequency (BF) of the fiber. The original BF identification method involves gradually tuning the scanning frequency of the probe laser light, which is time-consuming. To improve the sensing efficiency of BOTDA, a novel two-stage strain/temperature measurement method is proposed based on Bayesian uncertainty quantification. The method uses the information of a small amount of wide range frequency scanning data in the 1st stage to guide a concentrated scanning of the frequency points in the 2nd stage by employing transitional Markov chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC) algorithm. The second-stage scanning strategy based on Bayesian uncertainty quantification ensures the high confidence for BF identification, so that the number of required scanning points can be significantly reduced without sacrificing the measurement accuracy. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed method is verified using numerical and experimental data.

Abstract:A BOTDA sensing scheme combined frequency sweeping and slope-assisted techniques is proposed and experimentally demonstrated for simultaneously temperature and strain-induced vibration sensing. In this scheme, during sweeping Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) for temperature measurement, we simultaneously perform FFT to the time-domain traces whose probe-pump frequency difference (PPFD) is within the FWHM of the BGS at each position of fiber, and the location and the frequency of the strain-induced vibration event can be acquired based on SA-BOTDA technique. In this way, the vibration can be continuously measured at each selected working frequency point during the BGS scanning process and multiple measurements of vibration event can be completed in one whole BGS scanning process. Meanwhile, double sidebands probe method is employed to reduce the nonlocal effects. In our experiment, a temperature event and two vibration events with the frequency of 7.00Hz or 10.00Hz are simultaneously measured near the end of 10.6km long sensing fiber in a traditional BOTDA system. The system shows 1.2°C temperature accuracy and 0.67Hz frequency resolution, as well as a 3m spatial resolution. The proposed method may find some potential applications where both the strain-induced vibration frequency and temperature are the diagnostic objects.

Abstract:Long-range Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) requires a frequency scanning process and averaging to obtain Brillouin temporal traces to map the distributed Brillouin gain spectrum, which is highly time-consuming. Furthermore, the two-end accessibility of the BOTDA leads to a roundtrip wiring layout, which shortens the sensing distance to half of the fiber length. To overcome these issues, in this study, we proposed a single-end random-access BOTDA. Two pulses, namely, pump and probe pulses, were sequentially generated, one with constant frequency and the other with chirped modulation, between which a stimulated Brillouin scattering interaction occurred with a high signal-to-noise ratio; therefore, a frequency scanning process and averaging were not needed. The pump and probe pulses were sent into the sensing fiber at the near end, and only the probe was reflected by a narrow bandwidth filter placed at the far end. The proposed single-end BOTDA can randomly sense the interested position by adjusting the time delay between the pump and probe pulses. As a result, real-time dynamic acquisition up to 1 kHz can be achieved on any position along the 50-km-long fiber, and distributed measurements can be performed on the second level. In addition, the proposed sensor is immune to the nonlocal effect, demonstrating a higher sensing accuracy at the far end compared with that of a traditional BOTDA.

Novel scanning method for distortion-free BOTDA measurements

Abstract:Systematic errors induced by distortions in the pump pulse of conventional Brillouin distributed fiber sensors are thoroughly investigated. Experimental results, supported by a theoretical analysis, demonstrate that the two probe sidebands in standard Brillouin optical time-domain analyzers provide a non-zero net gain on the pump pulse, inducing severe distortions of the pump when scanning the pump-probe frequency offset, especially at high probe power levels. Compared to the impact of non-local effects reported in the state-of-the-art, measurements here indicate that for probe powers in the mW range (below the onset of amplified spontaneous Brillouin scattering), the obtained gain and loss spectra show two strong side-lobes that lead to significant strain/temperature errors. This phenomenon is not related to the well-known spectral hole burning resulting from pump depletion, but it is strictly related to the temporal and spectral distortions that the pump pulse experiences when scanning the Brillouin gain/loss spectrum. As a solution to this problem, a novel scanning scheme for Brillouin sensing is proposed. The method relies on a fixed frequency separation between the two probe sidebands, so that a flat zero net gain is achieved on the pump pulse when scanning the pump-probe frequency offset. The proposed technique is experimentally validated, demonstrating its ability to completely cancel out non-local effects up to a probe power ultimately limited by the onset of amplified spontaneous Brillouin scattering. The method allows for one order of magnitude improvement in the figure-of-merit of optimized long-range Brillouin distributed fiber sensors, enabling measurements along a 100 km-long sensing fiber with 2 m spatial resolution and with no need of added features for performance enhancement.
Vector Brillouin optical time-domain analysis with Raman amplification and optical pulse coding

Abstract:This paper proposes a new vector Brillouin optical time-domain analysis optical fiber sensor with large dynamic range and high signal-to-noise ratio that combines distributed Raman amplification with optical pulse coding. The optimized Raman pumping configurations are numerically simulated by solving the coupled differential equations of the hybrid Brillouin-Raman process, and experimentally investigated with respect to the Brillouin pump pulse. A vector network analyzer is adopted to extract both the amplitude and phase spectrograms of the Brillouin interaction in a distributed fashion which effectively lessens the impact of the Raman relative intensity noise transfer problem and achieve high accuracy measurement over a long sensing distance. Advanced pulse coding is further introduced to increase the sensing range under high spatial resolution. Initial experimental results of phase and amplitude from a custom built BOTDA system is presented. Compared to typically tens of kilometers measurement distance of conventional Brillouin optical time-domain analysis techniques, the proposed optical fiber Brillouin sensor has the potential to greatly enhances sensing range up to one hundred kilometers or greater, providing distributed temperature and strain monitoring of high spatial resolution and high sensing resolution in structures such as oil and natural gas pipelines.
Application of BOTDR into structural bending monitoring

Abstract:BOTDR (Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometer), as a distributed optical fiber strain monitoring technique, is briefly introduced in this paper. Because of its spatial resolution, the measurement error of BOTDR occurs frequently in monitoring non-uniformly strain distributed on the structure. An improved method based on spectral decomposition is described to raise spatial resolution of the BOTDR. The effectivity of this method is verified by a three-point bending test on a steel bar. A deflection measurement method is also presented here for structural bending monitoring. The experiment results show that the method of raising the spatial resolution of BOTDR is reliable and feasible, and the deflection calculated based on the calibrated strain has good agreement with the actual values measured by displacement meters. These results demonstrate that BOTDR is an effective means for structural bending monitoring.

Abstract:The spatial resolution of conventional Brillouin optical time domain reflectometry (BOTDR) is intrinsically limited by the relaxation time of phonons in the fiber. To make use of the narrow pulse width for higher spatial resolution, the double-pulse probe can induce interference between two acoustic waves, making it possible to determine the Brillouin frequency shift from the oscillating Brillouin gain spectrum. However, the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) is restricted since the pulse width is quite narrow. In this paper, we propose to combine the double-pulse technique with coding pulse to improve the SNR while maintaining high spatial resolution. The complementary return-to-zero (RZ) Golay codes are employed in the experiment, and every code element is expanded to contain the entire form of double-pulse. Thus, the interference pattern from the double-pulse interaction is guaranteed, and the decoding process can be correctly conducted. Experimental results demonstrate a significant SNR enhancement with a submeter-level spatial resolution.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time domain reflectometer (BOTDR) is a distributed optical fiber sensor with broad application prospects. For a given input light wavelength, the Brillouin frequency shift of spontaneous Brillouin scattering light has a linear relationship with both temperature and strain. The distributed temperature or strain can be obtained by measuring the Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) along the fiber. In a BOTDR, Brillouin power spectrum scanning is a commonly used means to obtain the BFS, and there has been two types: the optical frequency-difference scanning method and the electrical frequency scanning method. A wavelength scanning BOTDR is proposed based on the wavelength dependence of the BFS. With a tunable laser as the light source, the Brillouin power spectrum is obtained by scanning the input light wavelength. This method combines the advantages of the optical frequency-difference scanning method and the electrical frequency scanning method. The feasibility of this proposed method is demonstrated experimentally. By use of this method, a temperature accuracy of 2.2°C along a 23.4 km sensing fiber with a 5 m spatial resolution is achieved.
