Abstract:A high resolution distributed dynamic strain sensing has been proposed and experimentally demonstrated based on the combination of Brillouin and Rayleigh scattering. The proposed scheme employs the same set of frequency-scanning optical pulses modulated through the frequency-agile technique for fast measurements. The Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) technology is used to provide absolute measurement benchmarks, while the phase-sensitive optical time domain reflectometer (-OTDR) technology is used to capture relative strain changes in details. Two groups of 100 Hz vibrations with different amplitude (300 n and 250 n) have been measured under two different absolute strains (1173.9 and 525.3 ), which allows for dynamic absolute strain measurement with a high resolution of 8.4 n.

Abstract:Over the past three decades, extensive research activity on Brillouin scattering-based distributed optical fiber sensors has led to the availability of commercial instruments capable of measuring the static temperature/strain distribution over kilometer distances and with high spatial resolution, with applications typically covering structural and environmental monitoring. At the same time, the interest in dynamic measurements has rapidly grown due to the relevant number of applications which could benefit from this technology, including structural analysis for defect identification, vibration detection, railway traffic monitoring, shock events detection, and so on. In this paper, we present an overview of the recent advances in Brillouin-based distributed optical fiber sensors for dynamic sensing. The aspects of the Brillouin scattering process relevant in distributed dynamic measurements are analyzed, and the different techniques are compared in terms of performance and hardware complexity.

Abstract:A distributed optical fiber sensor based on Brillouin scattering (BOTDR or BOTDA) can measure and monitor strain and temperature generated along optical fiber. Because it can measure in real-time with high precision and stability, it is quite suitable for health monitoring of large-scale civil infrastructures. However, the main challenge of applying it to structural health monitoring is to ensure it is robust and can be repaired by adopting a suitable embedding method. In this paper, a novel method based on air-blowing and vacuum grouting techniques for embedding long-distance optical fiber sensors was developed. This method had no interference with normal concrete construction during its installation, and it could easily replace the long-distance embedded optical fiber sensor (LEOFS). Two stages of static loading tests were applied to investigate the performance of the LEOFS. The precision and the repeatability of the LEOFS were studied through an overloading test. The durability and the stability of the LEOFS were confirmed by a corrosion test. The strains of the LEOFS were used to evaluate the reinforcing effect of carbon fiber reinforced polymer and thereby the health state of the beams.

Abstract:We have experimentally investigated spatial-division multiplexed (SDM) Brillouin optical time-domain analysis in a heterogeneous multicore fiber whose central core and six outer cores are made from different preforms, showing a similar to 70 MHz Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) difference between them. It reveals that the heterogeneous central core and the outer cores have different temperature sensitivities, but their strain sensitivities are almost the same. By making use of the distinct temperature coefficients of these two kinds of cores, simultaneous and discriminative temperature and strain measurements are achieved. The bending-induced Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) broadening issue in off-center cores has been clarified, and a solution has been proposed to eliminate the uncertainty caused by a bending-induced BFS shift, by averaging the BFS variations of two symmetrical outer cores. We show a new perspective for discriminative measurement in Brillouin distributed sensors based on SDM solutions. (C) 2016 Optical Society of America

Abstract:Brillouin distributed optical fiber sensor is suitable for measuring the static temperature/strain, but Mach-Zenhder interferometer distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) can be used to measure the dynamic strain. Many practical applications need static and dynamic sensing information, which is beyond the capability of the single mechanism distributed optical fiber sensor. Considering optical-fiber sensors of Brillouin optical time domain analyzer (BOTDA) and optical-fiber sensors of Mach-Zenhder interferometer are both using the loop sensing fiber structures, BOTDA and Mach-Zenhder interference are combined together by sharing with the same sensing optical fiber, light source, and other optical devices. BOTDA is used to measure temperature, and Mach-Zenhder interferometer is applied to measure vibration. So, the sensor with multi-mechanism and multi-parameter can be achieved. A preliminary 25 km sensing experiment system is built for testing. For Mach-Zenhder's vibration sensing, spatial accuracy can reach to 60 m, and the vibration frequency is able to be obtained. For BOTDA's temperature testing, the beginning and end's measurement accuracy are 2°C without vibration in existence, and the accuracy becomes 3°C and 4°C respectively with vibration.

Abstract:In this paper,the performance of a novel technology—Brillouin optical frequency domain analysis(BOFDA)was tested and analyzed on the basis of experiments,and its spatial resolution,test accuracy and repeatability are 20 cm,±2×10-6 and ±4×10-6,respectively;Secondly,based on the tests,the comparison between brillouin time domain analysis and brillouin frequency domain analysis was conducted,and the reason of strain transition section was revealed.Thirdly,by comparing with traditional strain gauges measurements and theoretical calculations,we adopted the BOFDA to the equal intensity beam to verify the excellent test performance in the strain measurement.At last,the possible problem of BOFDA′s application in the monitoring of disaster prevention and mitigation project,such as temperature compensation and cable protection,was discussed and the corresponding solution is also presented.

Abstract:Brillouin optical correlation-domain analysis (BOCDA) utilizing low-coherence light sources offers high-resolution distributed strain and temperature sensing. However, conventional BOCDA requires dual-end injection of pump and probe light into the sensing fiber. To overcome this limitation, low-coherence Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) based on spontaneous Brillouin scattering has emerged, enabling single-end light injection. While a pilot demonstration has shown a spatial resolution of 19 cm, a comparison of its measurement accuracy with standard BOCDR systems is yet to be explored. This study presents a distributed measurement with ~ 3 cm spatial resolution and demonstrates that low-coherence BOCDR eliminates systematic errors caused by direct sinusoidal modulation, offering enhanced measurement precision.

Abstract:The utilization of distributed fiber-optic sensing systems has become prevalent in monitoring both static parameters such as temperature or strain, and dynamic parameters like vibration. In order to measure multi-parameters simultaneously, we combine Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering in a single sensing system. The time-gated digital optical frequency domain reflectometry is employed for vibration sensing and the Rayleigh backscattering of linear frequency modulation pulse is used as the probe of BOTDA for temperature sensing. The multi-frequency probe enables a non-step-scanning single-end BOTDA system. To simplify the hybrid system, we employ an intensity modulator for frequency modulation and pulse generation, replacing acousto-optic modulators. Both the positive and negative sidebands are received and modulated for demarcating static and dynamic parameters. This simplified system achieves sub-meter spatial resolution for vibration within a 12-km sensing range and offers a temperature measuring range of approximately 500 $^\circ \text{C}$, which is also non-step-scanning and immune to coherent fading.

Abstract:We report a novel technique to detect dynamic strain variations simultaneously at multiple locations. Our technique is based on Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis implemented through external phase modulation to generate multiple independently-accessible correlation peaks within the sensing fiber. Simulations are carried out to demonstrate the precise determination of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) from multiple locations independently, and the corresponding results are validated through controlled experiments. Two correlation peaks are generated within a 1 km long fiber and their independent tunability is verified experimentally by mapping the spatial profile of the two correlations. We demonstrate the detection of dynamic strain variations up to 50 Hz (limited only by our test setup) at two locations, each with a spatial resolution of 6 m over 1.1 km long fiber.

Abstract:We proposed and demonstrated a novel differential slope-assisted Brillouin optical correlation domain analysis (BOCDA) sensor based on a multicore fiber (MCF) for radial vibration measurement. Thanks to the bending-sensitivity of Brillouin frequency shift (BFS) in off-center cores in the MCF, by fixing the probe frequency around the mid-slope point of Brillouin gain spectrum (BGS) of the pump light, the BFS changes induced by radial vibration on the sensing fiber can be monitored through differential detection between the output probe powers of two symmetrical outer cores of the MCF. This scheme avoids the time-consuming process of frequency scanning and also removes the bandwidth limitation of lock-in amplifier (LIA) in a conventional BOCDA with the help of injection-locking technique. In addition, the proposed differential detection structure between two symmetrical outer cores improves the signal-to-noise ratio and sensitivity of the sensing system. For proof of concept, 12-Hz radial vibration measurement is demonstrated with 8.7-cm spatial resolution. The proposed scheme paves the way to enable high spatial resolution and high sensitivity vibration detection using a freely placed sensing fiber with BOCDA technique.

Abstract:A high-performance distributed optical fiber sensor based on phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR) for dynamic strain measurement has been proposed. In this newly designed system, ultraweak fiber Bragg gratings (UWFBGs) are sparsely embedded in the sensing fiber. Through an unbalanced 3 × 3 coupler structure, the reflected lights from two adjacent UWFBGs would be mixed with each other and then split into three parts for phase demodulation. Then, a novelty table-look-up scheme is introduced to precisely demodulate the frequency, amplitude, and phase of dynamic strain. Rayleigh back-scattering light is utilized to identify and locate the accurate position of vibration event between two adjacent UWFBGs. The experimental results show that the proposed system is capable of reconstructing the vibration with a linear intensity response of R2 = 0.9986 and a fiber length variation sensitivity of 117 pm/(Hz)1/2. Meanwhile, a wide frequency response band from 50 to 2075 Hz is achieved with high signal-to-noise ratio above 56 dB.

Abstract:Structural Health Monitoring, Ahead of Print. Material cracking is one of the key mechanisms contributing to structural failure. Distributed fiber optic sensing (DFOS) can measure the strain profile along optical fiber distributively. However, the conventional strain measurement using a Brillouin-DFOS system (Brillouin optical time-domain analysis/reflectometry (BOTDA/R)) has a decimeter-order spatial resolution, making it difficult to measure the highly localized strain generated by a sub-millimeter crack. This paper introduces a crack analysis method based on decomposing the Brillouin scattering spectrum to overcome the spatial resolution induced crack measurement limitation of the BOTDA/R system. The method uses the non-negative least squares algorithm to back-calculate the strain profile within the spatial resolution around each measurement point. The performance of this method is verified by a four point bending test of a brittle slag cement-cement-bentonite beam. The crack width estimation error is improved to ±0.005 mm for a crack as narrow as 0.76 mm.

Abstract:Extensive research on Brillouin- and Raman-based distributed optical fibre sensors over the past two decades has resulted in the commercialization of distributed sensors capable of measuring static and quasi-static phenomena such as temperature and strain. Recently, the focus has been shifted towards developing distributed sensors for measurement of dynamic phenomena such as dynamic strain and sound waves. This article reviews the current state of the art distributed optical fibre sensors capable of quantifying dynamic vibrations. The most important aspect of Rayleigh and Brillouin scattering processes which have been used for distributed dynamic measurement are studied. The principle of the sensing techniques used to measure dynamic perturbations are analyzed followed by a case study of the most recent advances in this field. It is shown that the Rayleigh-based sensors have longer sensing range and higher frequency range, but their spatial resolution is limited to 1 m. On the other hand, the Brillouin-based sensors have shown a higher spatial resolution, but relatively lower frequency and sensing ranges.
Accurate estimation of measurement position in Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry based on Rayleigh noise spectral analysis

Abstract:Brillouin optical correlation-domain reflectometry (BOCDR) is unique in its ability to measure distributed strain and temperature changes along a fiber under test (FUT) from a single end, offering random access and relatively high spatial resolution, making it promising for infrastructure monitoring. BOCDR achieves spatial resolution through frequency modulation of the laser output, and this modulation frequency determines the measurement position, necessitating accurate association of modulation frequencies with positions on the FUT. However, a practical method to precisely correlate modulation frequency values with FUT positions has not yet been proposed. This study introduces a method leveraging the change in Rayleigh noise spectrum with modulation frequency to accurately associate these frequencies with positions on the FUT. The effectiveness of this method is proved through distributed strain measurement.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) is an efficient distributed structural strain/temperature measurement technology by identifying the Brillouin frequency (BF) of the fiber. The original BF identification method involves gradually tuning the scanning frequency of the probe laser light, which is time-consuming. To improve the sensing efficiency of BOTDA, a novel two-stage strain/temperature measurement method is proposed based on Bayesian uncertainty quantification. The method uses the information of a small amount of wide range frequency scanning data in the 1st stage to guide a concentrated scanning of the frequency points in the 2nd stage by employing transitional Markov chain Monte Carlo (TMCMC) algorithm. The second-stage scanning strategy based on Bayesian uncertainty quantification ensures the high confidence for BF identification, so that the number of required scanning points can be significantly reduced without sacrificing the measurement accuracy. Finally, the efficacy of the proposed method is verified using numerical and experimental data.

Abstract:Brillouin optical time-domain analysis (BOTDA) requires frequency mapping of the Brillouin spectrum to obtain environmental information (e.g., temperature or strain) over the length of the sensing fiber, with the finite frequency-sweeping time-limiting applications to only static or slowly varying strain or temperature environments. To solve this problem, we propose the use of an optical chirp chain probe wave to remove the requirement of frequency sweeping for the Brillouin spectrum, which enables distributed ultrafast strain measurement with a single pump pulse. The optical chirp chain is generated using a frequency-agile technique via a fast-frequency-changing microwave, which covers a larger frequency range around the Stokes frequency relative to the pump wave, so that a distributed Brillouin gain spectrum along the fiber is realized. Dynamic strain measurements for periodic mechanical vibration, mechanical shock, and a switch event are demonstrated at sampling rates of 25 kHz, 2.5 MHz and 6.25 MHz, respectively. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first demonstration of distributed Brillouin strain sensing with a wide-dynamic range at a sampling rate of up to the MHz level.

Abstract:Distributed optical fiber sensors (DOFS) based on Raman, Brillouin, and Rayleigh scattering have recently attracted considerable attention for various sensing applications, especially large-scale monitoring, owing to their capacity for measuring strain or temperature distributions. However, ultraweak backscatter signals within optical fibers constitute an inevitable problem for DOFS, thereby increasing the burden on the entire system in terms of limited spatial resolution, low measurement speed, high system complexity, or high cost. We propose a novel resonance frequency mapping for a real-time quasi-distributed fiber optic sensor based on identical weak fiber Bragg gratings (FBG), which has stronger reflection signals and high sensitivity to multiple sensing parameters. The resonance configuration, which amplifies optical signals during multiple round-trip propagations, can simply and efficiently address the intrinsic problems in conventional single round-trip measurements for identical weak FBG sensors, such as crosstalk and optical power depletion. Moreover, it is technically feasible to perform individual measurements for a large number of quasi-distributed identical weak FBGs with relatively high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR), low crosstalk, and low optical power depletion. By mapping the resonance frequency spectrum, the dynamic response of each identical weak FBG is rapidly acquired in the order of kilohertz, and direct interrogation in real time is possible without time-consuming computation, such as fast Fourier transformation (FFT). This resonance frequency spectrum is obtained on the basis of an all-fiber electro-optic configuration that allows simultaneous measurement of quasi-distributed strain responses with high speed (>5 kHz), high stability (~2.4 με), and high linearity (R2 = 0.9999).

Abstract:The multi-parameter sensing is in great demand for comprehensive recognition in various application scenarios. We demonstrate a distributed optical fiber sensor (DOFS) for simultaneous vibration and temperature/strain sensing based on the integration of Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) and phase-sensitive optical time-domain reflectometry (Φ-OTDR). A double heterodyne detection configuration is set up to receive the Rayleigh scattering and Brillouin scattering simultaneously, which can enhance the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and reduce the polarization fading noise for the Brillouin signal at the same time. Most components in the setup are multiplexed for the Brillouin and Rayleigh signals. The overall cost is much lower than the summation of the BOTDR and the Φ-OTDR setup. In experiments, the setup is capable of measuring temperature change near the end of the 49.9 km long fiber with 0.381 MHz measurement uncertainty and restore different vibration patterns correctly by demodulating the phase variation of Rayleigh scattering signal, owning a 20 m spatial resolution. The sampling rate of the vibration measurement is 1.8 kHz, and the achieved dynamic strain resolution is 1.235 nɛ/√Hz with 100 Hz vibration.
